Soft-drop event shapes in electron-positron annihilation at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy

We present predictions for soft-drop event shapes of hadronic final states in electron-positron annihilation at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in perturbation theory obtained using the CoLoRFulNNLO subtraction method. We study the impact of the soft drop on the convergence of the perturbative expansion for the distributions of three event shape variables, the soft-drop thrust, the hemisphere jet and narrow jet invariant masses. We find that grooming generally improves perturbative convergence for these event shapes. This better perturbative stability, in conjunction with a reduced sensitivity to non-perturbative hadronization corrections makes soft-drop event shapes promising observables for the precise determination of the strong coupling at lepton colliders.

CoLoRFulNNLO for LHC processes

In my talk I gave a status update on the extension of the CoLoRFulNNLO subtraction method for computing QCD jet cross sections with hadrons in the initial state. The scheme has been fully worked out previously for electron-positron collisions and recently important steps have been made towards generalizing it to be able to deliver corrections of the same order for LHC processes as well. In particular, the important bottleneck of regularizing multiple real emissions has been addressed. We demonstrate the numerical stability of the CoLoRFulNNLO method by computing the doubly real contribution for Higgs-boson production in gluon-gluon fusion and for W production.

A unified model for nucleosynthesis of heavy elements in stars

We propose a unified model for the nucleosynthesis of heavy (A > 57) elements in stars. The neutron flux can be set to describe neutron capture in arbitrary neutron flux. Our approach solves the coupled differential equations, that describe the neutron capture and decays of 2696 nuclei, numerically without truncating those to include only either capture or decay as traditionally assumed in weak neutron flux (s process). As a result the synthesis of heavy nuclei always evolves along a wide band in the valley of stable nuclei. The observed abundances in the Solar system are reproduced reasonably already in the simplest version of the model. The model predicts that the nucleosynthesis in weak or modest neutron flux produces elements that are traditionally assumed to result in the high neutron flux of supernovae explosions (r process).

Higher order corrections in the CoLoRFulNNLO framework

We discuss the CoLoRFulNNLO method for computing higher order radiative corrections to jet cross sections in perturbative QCD. We apply our method to the calculation of event shapes and jet rates in three-jet production in electron-positron annihilation. We validate our code by comparing our predictions to previous results in the literature and present the jet cone energy fraction distribution at NNLO accuracy. We also present preliminary NNLO results for the three-jet rate using the Durham jet clustering algorithm matched to resummed predictions at NLL accuracy, and a comparison to LEP data.

Jet production in the CoLoRFulNNLO method: event shapes in electron-positron collisions

We present the CoLoRFulNNLO method to compute higher order radiative corrections to jet cross sections in perturbative QCD. We apply our method to the computation of event shape observables in electron-positron collisions at NNLO accuracy and validate our code by comparing our predictions to previous results in the literature. We also calculate for the first time jet cone energy fraction at NNLO.

Three-jet production in electron-positron collisions using the CoLoRFulNNLO method

We introduce a subtraction method for jet cross sections at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy in the strong coupling and use it to compute event shapes in three-jet production in electron-positron collisions. We validate our method on two event shapes, thrust and C-parameter, which are already known in the literature at NNLO accuracy and compute for the first time oblateness and the energy-energy correlation at the same accuracy.

Hadroproduction of t anti-t pair with two isolated photons with PowHel

We simulate the hadroproduction of a t anti-t pair in association with two isolated hard photons at 13 TeV LHC using the PowHel package. We use the generated events, stored according to the Les-Houches event format, to make predictions for differential distributions formally at the next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy. We present predictions at the hadron level employing the cone-type isolation of the photons used by experiments. We also compare the kinematic distributions to the same distributions obtained in the t anti-t H final state when the Higgs-boson decays into a photon pair, to which the process discussed here is an irreducible background.

Hadroproduction of t anti-t pair in association with an isolated photon at NLO accuracy matched with parton shower

We simulate the hadroproduction of a t anti-t pair in association with a hard photon at LHC using the PowHel package. These events are almost fully inclusive with respect to the photon, allowing for any physically relevant isolation of the photon. We use the generated events, stored according to the Les-Houches event format, to make predictions for differential distributions formally at the next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy and we compare these to existing predictions accurate at NLO using the smooth isolation prescription of Frixione. We also make predictions for distributions after full parton shower and hadronization using the standard experimental cone-isolation of the photon.

We simulate the hadroproduction of a top-antitop pair in association with a bottom-antibottom pair at 14 TeV LHC using the PowHel package. We use the generated events, stored according to the Les-Houches event format, to make predictions for differential distributions formally at the next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy and we compare these to existing predictions accurate at NLO.

NLO event samples for the LHC

We introduce a twiki page with collections of generated Monte Carlo event samples in proton-proton collisions at LHC energies including a heavy quark-antiquark pair in the final state. These samples are generated with the POWHEG method and can be used to prepare distributions at the NLO accuracy with first radiation treated according to the parton shower approach. Information related to each event is stored in the form prescribed by the Les Houches Accords. Standard parton shower Monte Carlo programs can be used to further evolve these events, and simulate events at the hadron level, ready for almost arbitrary experimental analysis. Currently the available final states are the following: (i) t + \bar{t}, (ii) t + \bar{t} + H, (iii) t + \bar{t} + jet, while the generation of several other final states is in progress.

Top quark pair production in association with a Z-boson at NLO accuracy

We present predictions for the production cross section of t-quark pair production in association with a Z boson at the next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy using matrix elements obtained from the HELAC-Oneloop package. We use the subtraction method for computing the radiative corrections as implemented in the POWHEG-Box, which was also used in several other computations of similar complexity.

NNLO jet cross sections by subtraction

We report on the computation of a class of integrals that appear when integrating the so-called iterated singly-unresolved approximate cross section of the NNLO subtraction scheme of [1-4], over the factorised phase space of unresolved partons. The integrated approximate cross section itself can be written as the product of an insertion operator (in colour space) times the Born cross section. We give selected results for the insertion operator for processes with two and three hard partons in the final state.

A subtraction scheme for computing QCD jet cross sections at NNLO: integrating the subtraction terms I

In previous articles we outlined a subtraction scheme for regularizing doubly-real emission and real-virtual emission in next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) calculations of jet cross sections in electron-positron annihilation. In order to find the NNLO correction these subtraction terms have to be integrated over the factorized unresolved phase space and combined with the two-loop corrections. In this paper we perform the integration of all one-parton unresolved subtraction terms.

Analytic integration of real-virtual counterterms in NNLO jet cross sections I

We present analytic evaluations of some integrals needed to give explicitly the integrated real-virtual integrated counterterms, based on a recently proposed subtraction scheme for next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) jet cross sections. After an algebraic reduction of the integrals, integration-by-parts identities are used for the reduction to master integrals and for the computation of the master integrals themselves by means of differential equations. The results are written in terms of one- and two-dimensional harmonic polylogarithms, once an extension of the standard basis is made. We expect that the techniques described here will be useful in computing other integrals emerging in calculations in perturbative quantum field theories.

Next-to-leading order calculation of four-jet observables in electron-positron annihilation

The production of four jets in electron-positron annihilation allows for measuring the strong coupling and the underlying group structure of the strong interaction simultaneously. This requires next-to-leading order perturbative prediction for four-jet observables. In this paper we describe the theoretical formalism of such a calculation with sufficient details. We use the dipole method to construct a Monte Carlo program that can be used for calculating any four-jet observable at the NLO accuracy. As new results, we present the NLO prediction for the thrust minor, y_4 and C parameter (at C > 0.75) four-jet shape variables and the four-jet rates with the Cambridge jet clustering algorithm.

Next-to-Leading Order Calculation of Four-Jet Shape Variables

We present the next-to-leading order calculation of two four-jet event shape variables, the D parameter and acoplanarity differential distributions. We find large, more than 100% radiative corrections. The theoretical prediction for the D parameter is compared to L3 data obtained at the Z peak and corrected to hadron level.

Regularization Scheme Independence and Unitarity in QCD Cross Sections

When calculating next-to-leading order QCD cross sections, divergences in intermediate steps of the calculation must be regularized. The final result is independent of the regularization scheme used, provided that it is unitary. In this paper we explore the relationship between regularization scheme independence and unitarity. We show how the regularization scheme dependence can be isolated in simple universal components, and how unitarity can be guaranteed for any regularization prescription that can consistently be introduced in one-loop amplitudes. Finally, we show how to derive transition rules between different schemes without having to do any loop calculations.
