One-loop effective lagrangians after matching

We discuss the limitations of the covariant derivative expansion prescription advocated to compute the one-loop Standard Model (SM) effective lagrangian when the heavy fields couple linearly to the SM. In particular, one-loop contributions resulting from the exchange of both heavy and light fields must be explicitly taken into account through matching because the proposed functional approach alone does not account for them. We review a simple case with a heavy scalar singlet of charge $-1$ to illustrate the argument. As two other examples where this matching is needed and this functional method gives a vanishing result, up to renormalization of the heavy sector parameters, we re-evaluate the one-loop corrections to the T--parameter due to a heavy scalar triplet with vanishing hypercharge coupling to the Brout-Englert-Higgs boson and to a heavy vector-like quark singlet of charged $2/3$ mixing with the top quark, respectively. In all cases we make use of a new code for matching fundamental and effective theories in models with arbitrary heavy field additions.

One-loop calculations in quantum field theory: from Feynman diagrams to unitarity cuts

The success of the experimental program at the Tevatron re-inforced the idea that precision physics at hadron colliders is desirable and, indeed, possible. The Tevatron data strongly suggests that one-loop computations in QCD describe hard scattering well. Extrapolating this observation to the LHC, we conclude that knowledge of many short-distance processes at next-to-leading order may be required to describe the physics of hard scattering. While the field of one-loop computations is quite mature, parton multiplicities in hard LHC events are so high that traditional computational techniques become inefficient. Recently new approaches based on unitarity have been developed for calculating one-loop scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory. These methods are especially suitable for the description of multi-particle processes in QCD and are amenable to numerical implementations. We present a systematic pedagogical description of both conceptual and technical aspects of the new methods.

Efficient Color-Dressed Calculation of Virtual Corrections

With the advent of generalized unitarity and parametric integration techniques, the construction of a generic Next-to-Leading Order Monte Carlo becomes feasible. Such a generator will entail the treatment of QCD color in the amplitudes. We extend the concept of color dressing to one-loop amplitudes, resulting in the formulation of an explicit algorithmic solution for the calculation of arbitrary scattering processes at Next-to-Leading order. The resulting algorithm is of exponential complexity, that is the numerical evaluation time of the virtual corrections grows by a constant multiplicative factor as the number of external partons is increased. To study the properties of the method, we calculate the virtual corrections to $n$-gluon scattering.

HPro: A NLO Monte-Carlo for Higgs production via gluon fusion with finite heavy quark masses

We compute fully differential next-to-leading order QCD cross-sections for Higgs boson production via gluon fusion in the Standard Model. We maintain the full dependence of the cross-sections on the top and bottom quark mass. We find that finite quark mass effects are important given the achieved precision of QCD predictions for gluon fusion. Our Monte-Carlo program, HPro, can correct existing NNLO fully differential calculations, which employ the approximation of an infinitely heavy top and a vanishing bottom quark Yukawa coupling, for heavy quark finite mass effects through NLO.

One-loop amplitudes for W+3 jet production in hadron collisions

We employ the recently developed method of generalized $D$-dimensional unitarity to compute one-loop virtual corrections to all scattering amplitudes relevant for the production of a $W$ boson in association with three jets in hadronic collisions, treating all quarks as massless.

A Numerical Unitarity Formalism for One-Loop Amplitudes

The unitarity method for calculating one-loop amplitudes provides algorithms of polynomial complexity. This is primarily beneficial for the computation of multi-leg one loop amplitudes and it is therefore of great interest to develop a numerical implementation of the unitarity method. We describe a recently-developed, efficient, semi-numerical unitarity method for the computation of the cut-constructible part of one-loop amplitudes.

Full one-loop amplitudes from tree amplitudes

We establish an efficient polynomial-complexity algorithm for one-loop calculations, based on generalized $D$-dimensional unitarity. It allows automated computations of both cut-constructible {\it and} rational parts of one-loop scattering amplitudes from on-shell tree amplitudes. We illustrate the method by (re)-computing all four-, five- and six-gluon scattering amplitudes in QCD at one-loop.

Unitarity cuts and reduction to master integrals in d dimensions for one-loop amplitudes

We present an alternative reduction to master integrals for one-loop amplitudes using a unitarity cut method in arbitrary dimensions. We carry out the reduction in two steps. The first step is a pure four-dimensional cut-integration of tree amplitudes with a mass parameter, and the second step is applying dimensional shift identities to master integrals. This reduction is performed at the integrand level, so that coefficients can be read out algebraically.

Two-loop amplitudes and master integrals for the production of a Higgs boson via a massive quark and a scalar-quark loop

We compute all two-loop master integrals which are required for the evaluation of next-to-leading order QCD corrections in Higgs boson production via gluon fusion. Many two-loop amplitudes for 2 -> 1 processes in the Standard Model and beyond can be expressed in terms of these integrals using automated reduction techniques. These integrals also form a subset of the master integrals for more complicated 2 -> 2 amplitudes with massive propagators in the loops. As a first application, we evaluate the two-loop amplitude for Higgs boson production in gluon fusion via a massive quark. Our result is the first independent check of the calculation of Spira, Djouadi, Graudenz and Zerwas. We also present for the first time the two-loop amplitude for gg -> h via a massive squark.

D-dimensional unitarity cut method

We develop a unitarity method to compute one-loop amplitudes with massless propagators in d=4-2*epsilon dimensions. We compute double cuts of the loop amplitudes via a decomposition into a four-dimensional and a -2*epsilon-dimensional integration. The four-dimensional integration is performed using spinor integration or other efficient techniques. The remaining integral in -2*epsilon dimensions is cast in terms of bubble, triangle, box, and pentagon master integrals using dimensional shift identities. The method yields results valid for arbitrary values of epsilon.

Deconstructing Non-Abelian Gauge Theories at One Loop

Deconstruction of 5D Yang-Mills gauge theories is studied in next-to-leading order accuracy. We calculate one-loop corrections to the mass spectrum of the non-linear gauged sigma-model, which is the low energy effective theory of the deconstructed theory. Renormalization is carried out following the standard procedure of effective field theories. The relation between the radius of the compactified fifth dimension and the symmetry breaking scale of the non-linear sigma-model is modified by radiative corrections. We demonstrate that one can match the low lying spectrum of the gauge boson masses of the effective 4D gauged non-linear sigma-model to the Kaluza-Klein modes of the 5D theory at one-loop accuracy.

Radiative Corrections with 5D Mixed Position-/Momentum-space Propagators

In higher dimensional field theories with compactified dimensions there are three standard ways to do perturbative calculations: i) by the summation over Kaluza-Klein towers; ii) by the summation over winding numbers making use of the Poisson-resummation formula and iii) by using mixed propagators, where the coordinates of the four infinite dimensions are Fourier-transformed to momentum space while those of the compactified dimensions are kept in configuration space. The third method is broadly used in finite temperature field theory calculations. One of its advantage is that one can easily separate the ultraviolet divergent terms of the uncompactified theory from the non-local finite corrections arising from windings around the compact dimensions. In this note we demonstrate the use of this formalism by calculating one-loop self-energy corrections in a 5D theory formulated on the manifold M_4 \otimes S_1 and on the orbifold M_4 \otimes S_1/Z_2.

Two-loop anomalous dimension in light-cone gauge with Mandelstam-Leibbrandt prescription

All the next-to-leading order results on Altarelli-Parisi splitting functions have been obtained in the literature either by using the operator product expansion method or by making use of the Curci Furmanski Petronzio (CFP) formalism in conjunction with light-like axial gauge, principal value (PV) prescription and dimensional regularization. In this paper we present the calculation of some non-singlet two-loop anomalous dimensions within the CFP formalism using light-cone axial gauge with Mandelstam-Leibbrandt (ML) prescription. We make a detailed comparison between the intermediate results given by the (PV) versus the (ML) method. We point out that the (ML) method is completely consistent and avoids the ``phenomenological rules'' used in the case of (PV) regularization.

Singular terms of helicity amplitudes at one-loop in QCD and the soft limit of the cross sections of multi-parton processes

We describe a general method that enables us to obtain all the singular terms of helicity amplitudes of n-parton processes at one loop. The algorithm uses helicity amplitudes at tree level and simple color algebra. We illustrate the method by calculating the singular part of the one loop helicity amplitudes of all $ 2\to 3$ parton subprocesses. The results are used to derive the soft gluon limit of the cross sections of all $2\to 4$ parton scattering subprocesses which provide a useful initial condition for the angular ordering approximation to coherent multiple soft gluon emission, incorporated in existing Monte Carlo simulation programs.
