Undercomplete Blind Subspace Deconvolution

We introduce the blind subspace deconvolution (BSSD) problem, which is the extension of both the blind source deconvolution (BSD) and the independent subspace analysis (ISA) tasks. We examine the case of the undercomplete BSSD (uBSSD). Applying temporal concatenation we reduce this problem to ISA. The associated `high dimensional' ISA problem can be handled by a recent technique called joint f-decorrelation (JFD). Similar decorrelation methods have been used previously for kernel independent component analysis (kernel-ICA). More precisely, the kernel canonical correlation (KCCA) technique is a member of this family, and, as is shown in this paper, the kernel generalized variance (KGV) method can also be seen as a decorrelation method in the feature space. These kernel based algorithms will be adapted to the ISA task. In the numerical examples, we (i) examine how efficiently the emerging higher dimensional ISA tasks can be tackled, and (ii) explore the working and advantages of the derived kernel-ISA methods.

Independent Process Analysis without A Priori Dimensional Information

Recently, several algorithms have been proposed for independent subspace analysis where hidden variables are i.i.d. processes. We show that these methods can be extended to certain AR, MA, ARMA and ARIMA tasks. Central to our paper is that we introduce a cascade of algorithms, which aims to solve these tasks without previous knowledge about the number and the dimensions of the hidden processes. Our claim is supported by numerical simulations. As a particular application, we search for subspaces of facial components.

A note on symplectic rational blow--downs

Due to a significant error in the main result (pointed out by J. Wahl), the paper has been withdrawn by the authors. A corrected and expanded version is 'Rational blow-downs and smoothings of surface singularities' by A. Stipsicz, Z. Szabo and J. Wahl.

Real and Complex Independent Subspace Analysis by Generalized Variance

Here, we address the problem of Independent Subspace Analysis (ISA). We develop a technique that (i) builds upon joint decorrelation for a set of functions, (ii) can be related to kernel based techniques, (iii) can be interpreted as a self-adjusting, self-grouping neural network solution, (iv) can be used both for real and for complex problems, and (v) can be a first step towards large scale problems. Our numerical examples extend to a few 100 dimensional ISA tasks.

Separation Theorem for K-Independent Subspace Analysis with Sufficient Conditions

Here, a Separation Theorem about K-Independent Subspace Analysis (K real or complex), a generalization of K-Independent Component Analysis (KICA) is proven. According to the theorem, KISA estimation can be executed in two steps under certain conditions. In the first step, 1-dimensional KICA estimation is executed. In the second step, optimal permutation of the KICA elements is searched for. We present sufficient conditions for the KISA Separation Theorem. Namely, we shall show that (i) spherically symmetric sources (both for real and complex cases), as well as (ii) real 2-dimensional sources invariant to 90 degree rotation, among others, satisfy the conditions of the theorem.

The Dehn surgery characterization of the trefoil and the figure eight knot

We give a Dehn surgery characterization of the trefoil and the figure eight knots. These results are gotten by combining surgery formulas in Heegaard Floer homology from an earlier paper with the characterization of these knots in terms of their knot Floer homology given in a recent paper of Ghiggini.

Heegaard diagrams and Floer homology

We review the construction of Heegaard Floer homology for closed three-manifolds and also for knots and links in the three-sphere. We also discuss three applications of this invariant to knot theory: studying the Thurston norm of a link complement, the slice genus of a knot, and the unknotting number of a knot. We emphasize the application to the Thurston norm, and illustrate the theory in the case of the Conway link.

Planar open books and Floer homology

Giroux has described a correspondence between open book decompositions on a 3--manifold and contact structures. In this paper we use Heegaard Floer homology to give restrictions on contact structures which correspond to open book decompositions with planar pages, generalizing a recent result of Etnyre.

Knot Floer homology and rational surgeries

Let $K$ be a rationally null-homologous knot in a three-manifold $Y$. We construct a version of knot Floer homology in this context, including a description of the Floer homology of a three-manifold obtained as Morse surgery on the knot $K$. As an application, we express the Heegaard Floer homology of rational surgeries on $Y$ along a null-homologous knot $K$ in terms of the filtered homotopy type of the knot invariant for $K$. This has applications to Dehn surgery problems for knots in $S^3$. In a different direction, we use the techniques developed here to calculate the Heegaard Floer homology of an arbitrary Seifert fibered three-manifold.

Knots with unknotting number one and Heegaard Floer homology

We use Heegaard Floer homology to give obstructions to unknotting a knot with a single crossing change. These restrictions are particularly useful in the case where the knot in question is alternating. As an example, we use them to classify all knots with crossing number less than or equal to nine and unknotting number equal to one. We also classify alternating knots with ten crossings and unknotting number equal to one.

On Park's exotic smooth four-manifolds

In a recent paper, Park constructs certain exotic simply-connected four-manifolds with small Euler characteristics. Our aim here is to prove that the four-manifolds in his constructions are minimal.

On Heegaard Floer homology and Seifert fibered surgeries

We explore certain restrictions on knots in the three-sphere which admit non-trivial Seifert fibered surgeries. These restrictions stem from the Heegaard Floer homology for Seifert fibered spaces, and hence they have consequences for both the Alexander polynomial of such knots, and also their knot Floer homology. In particular, we show that certain polynomials are never the Alexander polynomials of knots which admit homology three-sphere Seifert fibered surgeries. The knot Floer homology restrictions, on the other hand, apply also in cases where the Alexander polynomial gives no information, such as the Kinoshita-Terasaka knots.

Holomorphic disks and genus bounds

We prove that, like the Seiberg-Witten monopole homology, the Heegaard Floer homology for a three-manifold determines its Thurston norm. As a consequence, we show that knot Floer homology detects the genus of a knot. This leads to new proofs of certain results previously obtained using Seiberg-Witten monopole Floer homology (in collaboration with Kronheimer and Mrowka). It also leads to a purely Morse-theoretic interpretation of the genus of a knot. The method of proof shows that the canonical element of Heegaard Floer homology associated to a weakly symplectically fillable contact structure is non-trivial. In particular, for certain three-manifolds, Heegaard Floer homology gives obstructions to the existence of taut foliations.

On knot Floer homology and lens space surgeries

In an earlier paper, we used the absolute grading on Heegaard Floer homology to give restrictions on knots in $S^3$ which admit lens space surgeries. The aim of the present article is to exhibit stronger restrictions on such knots, arising from knot Floer homology. One consequence is that all the non-zero coefficients of the Alexander polynomial of such a knot are $\pm 1$. This information in turn can be used to prove that certain lens spaces are not obtained as integral surgeries on knots. In fact, combining our results with constructions of Berge, we classify lens spaces $L(p,q)$ which arise as integral surgeries on knots in $S^3$ with $|p|\leq 1500$. Other applications include bounds on the four-ball genera of knots admitting lens space surgeries (which are sharp for Berge's knots), and a constraint on three-manifolds obtained as integer surgeries on alternating knots, which is closely to related to a theorem of Delman and Roberts.
