Updated reduced CMB data and constraints on cosmological parameters

We obtain the reduced CMB data $\{l_A, R, z_*\}$ from WMAP9, WMAP9+BICEP2, Planck+WP and Planck+WP+BICEP2 for the $Λ$CDM and $w$CDM models with or without spatial curvature. We then use these reduced CMB data in combination with low-redshift observations to put constraints on cosmological parameters. We find that including BICEP2 results in a higher value of the Hubble constant especially when the equation of state of dark energy and curvature are allowed to vary. For the $Λ$CDM model with curvature, the estimate of the Hubble constant with Planck+WP+Lensing is inconsistent with the one derived from Planck+WP+BICEP at about 1.3 $σ$ confidence level.

Reconstructing the interaction between dark energy and dark matter using Gaussian Processes

We present a nonparametric approach to reconstruct the interaction between dark energy and dark matter directly from SNIa Union 2.1 data using Gaussian processes, which is a fully Bayesian approach for smoothing data. In this method, once the equation of state ($w$) of dark energy is specified, the interaction can be reconstructed as a function of redshift. For the decaying vacuum energy case with $w=-1$, the reconstructed interaction is consistent with the standard $Λ$CDM model, namely, there is no evidence for the interaction. This also holds for the constant $w$ cases from $-0.9$ to $-1.1$ and for the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder (CPL) parametrization case. If the equation of state deviates obviously from $-1$, the reconstructed interaction exists at $95\%$ confidence level. This shows the degeneracy between the interaction and the equation of state of dark energy when they get constraints from the observational data.

Inflection point inflation and dark energy in supergravity

We consider an inflection point inflationary model in supergravity with a single chiral superfield and show that the predicted values of the scalar spectral index and tensor-to-scalar ratio are consistent with the Planck 2015 results. In this model supersymmetry is strongly broken after inflation, which results in a non-SUSY de-Sitter vacuum responsible for the recent accelerated expansion of the Universe.

Constraints on the $Λ$CDM model with redshift tomography

Recently released Planck data favor a lower value of the Hubble constant and a higher value of the fraction matter density in the standard $Λ$CDM model, which are discrepant with some of the low-redshift measurements. Within the context of this cosmology, we examine the consistency of the estimated values for the Hubble constant and fraction matter density with redshift tomography. Using the SNe Ia, Hubble parameter, BAO and CMB data, which are divided into three bins, we find no statistical evidence for any tension in the three redshift bins, although there exists a 1.4$σ$ deviation of the Hubble constant in the middle redshift from the one in the high redshift bin.

Reconstruction of the primordial power spectra with Planck and BICEP2

By using the cubic spline interpolation method, we reconstruct the shape of the primordial scalar and tensor power spectra from the recently released {\it Planck} temperature and BICEP2 polarization cosmic microwave background data. We find that the vanishing scalar index running ($\dd n_s/\dd\ln k$) model is strongly disfavored at more than $3σ$ confidence level on the $k=0.0002$ Mpc$^{-1}$ scale. Furthermore, the power-law parameterization gives a blue-tilt tensor spectrum, no matter using only the first 5 bandpowers $n_t = 1.20^{+0.56}_{-0.64} (95% {\rm CL})$ or the full 9 bandpowers $n_t = 1.24^{+0.51}_{-0.58} (95% {\rm CL})$ of BICEP2 data sets. Unlike the large tensor-to-scalar ratio value ($r\sim0.20$) under the scale-invariant tensor spectrum assumption, our interpolation approach gives $r_{0.002} < 0.060 (95% {\rm CL})$ by using the first 5 bandpowers of BICEP2 data. After comparing the results with/without BICEP2 data, we find that {\it Planck} temperature with small tensor amplitude signals and BICEP2 polarization data with large tensor amplitude signals dominate the tensor spectrum reconstruction on the large and small scales, respectively. Hence, the resulting blue tensor tilt actually reflects the tension between {\it Planck} and BICEP2 data.

Cosmological parameter estimation from CMB and X-ray clusters after Planck

We update the cosmological parameter estimation for three non-vanilla models by a joint analysis of \CCCP\ X-ray cluster, the newly released \Planck\ CMB data as well as some external data sets, such as baryon acoustic oscillation measurements from the 6dFGS, SDSS DR7 and BOSS DR9 surveys, and Hubble Space Telescope $H_0$ measurement. First of all, we find that X-ray cluster data sets strongly favor a non-zero summed neutrino mass at more than 3$σ$ confidence level in these non-vanilla models. And then, we reveal some tensions between X-ray cluster and {\it Planck} data in some cosmological parameters. For the matter power spectrum amplitude $σ_8$, X-ray cluster data favor a lower value compared with {\it Planck}. Because of the strong $σ_8-\sum m_ν$ degeneracy, this tension could beyond 2$σ$ confidence level when the summed neutrino mass $\sum m_ν$ is allowed to vary. For the CMB lensing amplitude $A_L$, the addition of X-ray cluster data results in a 3$σ$ deviation from the vanilla model. Furthermore, {\it Planck}+X-ray data prefer a large Hubble constant and phantom-like dark energy equation of state, which are in $2σ$ tension with those from WMAP7+X-ray data. Finally, we find that these tensions/descrepencies could be relaxed in some sense by adding a $9\%$ systematic shift in the cluster mass functions.

Inflation coupled to a Gauss-Bonnet term

The newly released Planck CMB data place tight constraints on slow-roll inflationary models. Some of commonly discussed inflationary potentials are disfavored due mainly to the large tensor-to-scalar ratio. In this paper we show that these potentials may be in good agreement with the Planck data when the inflaton has a non-minimal coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet term. Moreover, such a coupling violates the consistency relation between the tensor spectral index and tensor-to-scalar ratio. If the tensor spectral index is allowed to vary freely, the Planck constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio are slightly improved.

CMB anomalies from an inflationary model in string theory

Recent Planck measurements show some CMB anomalies on large angular scales, which confirms the early observations by WMAP. We show that an inflationary model, in which before the slow-roll inflation the Universe is in a superinflationary phase, can generate a large-scale cutoff in the primordial power spectrum, which may account for not only the power suppression on large angular scales, but also a large dipole power asymmetry in the CMB. We discuss an implementation of our model in string theory.

Obtaining the CMB anomalies with a bounce from the contracting phase to inflation

Recent Planck data show the anomalies of CMB fluctuations on large angular scales, which confirms the early observations by WMAP. We continue studying an inflationary model, in which before the slow roll inflation the universe is in a contracting phase, and fit the model with the Planck data. It is showed that this model may generate not only the power deficit at low-l, but also a large hemispherical power asymmetry in CMB. We also discuss the implication of the result to the eternal inflation scenario.

Nucleosynthesis constraint on Lorentz invariance violation in the neutrino sector

We investigate the nucleosynthesis constraint on Lorentz invariance violation in the neutrino sector which influences the formation of light elements by altering the energy density of the Universe and weak reaction rates prior to and during the big-bang nucleosynthesis epoch. We derive the weak reaction rates in the Lorentz-violating extension of the standard model. Using measurements of the primordial helium-4 and deuterium abundances, we give a tighter constraint on the deformed parameter than that derived from measurements of the cosmic microwave background anisotropies.

Non-Gaussian features from the inverse volume corrections in loop quantum cosmology

In this paper we study the non-Gaussian features of the primordial fluctuations in loop quantum cosmology with the inverse volume corrections. The detailed analysis is performed in the single field slow-roll inflationary models. However, our results reflect the universal characteristics of bispectrum in loop quantum cosmology. The main corrections to the scalar bispectrum come from two aspects: one is the modifications to the standard Bunch-Davies vacuum, the other is the corrections to the background dependent variables, such as slow-roll parameters. Our calculations show that the loop quantum corrections make $f_{\rm NL}$ of the inflationary models increase 0.1%. Moreover, we find that two new shapes arise, namely $\mathcal F_{1}$ and $\mathcal F_{2}$. The former gives a unique loop quantum feature which is less correlated with the local, equilateral and single types, while the latter is highly correlated with the local one.

Cosmological constraints on Lorentz invariance violation in the neutrino sector

We derive the Boltzmann equation in the synchronous gauge for massive neutrinos with a deformed dispersion relation. Combining the 7-year WMAP data with lower-redshift measurements of the expansion rate, we give constraints on the deformation parameter and find that the deformation parameter is strong degenerate with the physical dark matter density instead of the neutrino mass. Our results show that there is no evidence for Lorentz invariant violation in the neutrino sector. The ongoing Planck experiment could provide improved constraints on the deformation parameter.

Primordial power spectrum versus extension parameters beyond the standard model

We reconstruct the shape of the primordial power spectrum of curvature perturbations in extended cosmological models, including addition of massive neutrinos, extra relativistic species or varying primordial helium abundance, from the latest cosmic microwave background data from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe, the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and the South Pole Telescope. We find that a scale-invariant primordial spectrum is disfavored by the data at 95% confidence level even in the presence of massive neutrinos, however it can lie within the 95% confidence region if the effective number of relativistic species or the primordial helium abundance is allowed to vary freely. The constraints on the extension parameters from WMAP7+ACT+H0+BAO, are the total mass of neutrinos sum(m_nu) < 0.48 eV (95% CL), the effective number of relativistic species N_eff = 4.50 +/- 0.81 and the primordial helium abundance Y_p = 0.303 +/- 0.075. The constraints from WMAP7+SPT+H0+BAO, are sum(m_nu) < 0.45 eV (95% CL), N_eff = 3.86 +/- 0.63 and Y_p = 0.277 +/- 0.050.

Uncorrelated estimates of the primordial power spectrum

We use the localized principle component analysis to detect deviations from scale invariance of the primordial power spectrum of curvature perturbations. With the technique we make uncorrelated estimates of the primordial power spectrum with five wavenumber bins. In the framework of a minimal LCDM model, using the latest cosmic microwave background data from the WMAP and ACT experiments we find that more than 95% of the preferred models are incompatible with the assumption of scale-invariance, but still compatible with a power-law primordial spectrum. We also forecast the sensitivity and constraints achievable by the Planck experiment by performing Monte Carlo studies on simulated data. Planck could significantly improve the constraints on the primordial power spectrum, especially at small scales by roughly a factor of 4.

Reconstruction of the primordial power spectrum from CMB data

Measuring the deviation from scale invariance of the primordial power spectrum is a critical test of inflation. In this paper we reconstruct the shape of the primordial power spectrum of curvature perturbations from the cosmic microwave background data, including the 7-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe data and the Atacama Cosmology Telescope 148 GHz data, by using a binning method of a cubic spline interpolation in log-log space. We find that the power-law spectrum is preferred by the data and that the Harrison-Zel'dovich spectrum is disfavored at 95% confidence level. These conclusions hold with and without allowing for tensor modes, however the simpler model without tensors is preferred by the data. We do not find evidence for a feature in the primordial power spectrum - in full agreement with generic predictions from cosmological inflation.

Observational constraints on the energy scale of inflation

Determining the energy scale of inflation is crucial to understand the nature of inflation in the early Universe. We place observational constraints on the energy scale of the observable part of the inflaton potential by combining the 7-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe data with distance measurements from the baryon acoustic oscillations in the distribution of galaxies and the Hubble constant measurement. Our analysis provides an upper limit on this energy scale, 2.3 \times 10^{16} GeV at 95% confidence level. Moreover, we forecast the sensitivity and constraints achievable by the Planck experiment by performing Monte Carlo studies on simulated data. Planck could significantly improve the constraints on the energy scale of inflation and on the shape of the inflaton potential.

Slow-roll inflation with a Gauss-Bonnet correction

We consider slow-roll inflation for a single scalar field with an arbitrary potential and an arbitrary nonminimal coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet term. By introducing a combined hierarchy of Hubble and Gauss-Bonnet flow functions, we analytically derive the power spectra of scalar and tensor perturbations. The standard consistency relation between the tensor-to-scalar ratio and the spectral index of tensor perturbations is broken. We apply this formalism to a specific model with a monomial potential and an inverse monomial Gauss-Bonnet coupling and constrain it by the 7-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe data. The Gauss-Bonnet term with a positive (or negative) coupling may lead to a reduction (or enhancement) of the tensor-to-scalar ratio and hence may revive the quartic potential ruled out by recent cosmological data.

Power spectra from an inflaton coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet term

We consider power-law inflation with a Gauss-Bonnet correction inspired by string theory. We analyze the stability of cosmological perturbations and obtain the allowed parameter space. We find that for GB-dominated inflation ultra-violet instabilities of either scalar or tensor perturbations show up on small scales. The Gauss-Bonnet correction with a positive (or negative) coupling may lead to a reduction (or enhancement) of the tensor-to-scalar ratio in the potential-dominated case. We place tight constraints on the model parameters by making use of the WMAP 5-year data.
