Electron-like high-temperature superconductivity induced by compressive strain in La2PrNi2O7 thin films

The realization of high-temperature superconductivity in bilayer nickelates under epitaxial compressive strain is widely interpreted as mimicking the effects of high hydrostatic pressure. To test the equivalence of these mechanisms, we investigated a comprehensive strain continuum ranging from compressive (-2.14%) to tensile (+0.91%). Crucially, via ozone-assisted atomic-layer epitaxy, we realized high-temperature superconductivity in as-grown La2PrNi2O7 films on NdAlO3 substrates, which induce the most extreme compressive strain in this material system. Under extreme compression (-2.14%), these films exhibit a Tc_onset of 60 K, zero resistance at 33 K, and a diamagnetic response at 20 K, with magnetotransport measurements confirming a quasi-two-dimensional superconducting nature. Comparing our phase diagram with reported data reveals distinct lattice responses: unlike in pressurized crystals, the superconducting window in epitaxial films diverges significantly in the out-of-plane parameter c (or c/ap ratio) but remains consistent with the bulk regarding the in-plane parameter ap. Crucially, while superconductivity in both systems emerges from the suppression of spin-density waves (SDW), Hall measurements reveal a fundamental electronic dichotomy: optimal superconducting films are intrinsically electron-like (exhibiting a negative Hall coefficient), in stark contrast to the hole-like nature (positive Hall coefficient) of high-pressure bulk crystals and non-superconducting tensile films. Ultimately, both tuning strategies effectively modulate the underlying correlation landscape - the true driver of superconductivity - transcending the constraints of specific Fermi surface topologies. This work establishes a macroscopic platform for probing the multi-orbital physics of nickelates, offering a new dimension for investigating high-temperature superconductivity.

Directional-dependent Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at EuO/KTaO$_3$(111) interfaces

In two dimensions, a phase-coherent superconducting state is established via a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition, whose critical temperature $T_{\rm BKT}$ is determined by the global superfluid stiffness in uniform superconducting systems. We report that at the interface between (111)-oriented KTaO$_3$ and ferromagnetic EuO, the two-dimensional superconducting state exhibits a BKT transition relying on the direction of in-plane bias current. The highest $T_{\rm BKT}$ occurs when current is applied along one of the [11$\bar{2}$] axes of KTaO$_3$, underscoring a spontaneous breaking of the threefold lattice rotational symmetry. Such directional dependence of $T_{\rm BKT}$ is consistently reflected in the nonreciprocal signals stemming from superconducting fluctuations above the transition. We attribute this phenomenon to an interfacial phase segregation; the phase with higher $T_{\rm BKT}$ self-organizes into quasi-one-dimensional textures that stretch along one of the [11$\bar{2}$] directions. Our results point toward the emergence of exotic phases of matter beyond the description of conventional BKT physics at a superconducting interface that is subjected to ferromagnetic proximity.

VLM-CPL: Consensus Pseudo Labels from Vision-Language Models for Annotation-Free Pathological Image Classification

Classification of pathological images is the basis for automatic cancer diagnosis. Despite that deep learning methods have achieved remarkable performance, they heavily rely on labeled data, demanding extensive human annotation efforts. In this study, we present a novel human annotation-free method by leveraging pre-trained Vision-Language Models (VLMs). Without human annotation, pseudo-labels of the training set are obtained by utilizing the zero-shot inference capabilities of VLM, which may contain a lot of noise due to the domain gap between the pre-training and target datasets. To address this issue, we introduce VLM-CPL, a novel approach that contains two noisy label filtering techniques with a semi-supervised learning strategy. Specifically, we first obtain prompt-based pseudo-labels with uncertainty estimation by zero-shot inference with the VLM using multiple augmented views of an input. Then, by leveraging the feature representation ability of VLM, we obtain feature-based pseudo-labels via sample clustering in the feature space. Prompt-feature consensus is introduced to select reliable samples based on the consensus between the two types of pseudo-labels. We further propose High-confidence Cross Supervision by to learn from samples with reliable pseudo-labels and the remaining unlabeled samples. Additionally, we present an innovative open-set prompting strategy that filters irrelevant patches from whole slides to enhance the quality of selected patches. Experimental results on five public pathological image datasets for patch-level and slide-level classification showed that our method substantially outperformed zero-shot classification by VLMs, and was superior to existing noisy label learning methods. The code is publicly available at https://github.com/HiLab-git/VLM-CPL.

Superconducting stripes induced by ferromagnetic proximity in an oxide heterostructure

The intimate connection between magnetism and superconducting pairing routinely plays a central role in determining the occurrence of unconventional superconducting states. In high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) stripe-ordered cuprate superconductors and a magnetically ordered iron-based superconductor, the coupling between magnetism and superconductivity gives birth to novel phases of matter with modulation of the superconducting pairing in the real space. Further exploration of these phases can shed light on the mechanism of unconventional superconductivity. Here we report on the discovery of a peculiar spatially-varying superconducting state residing at the interface between (110)-oriented KTaO3 and ferromagnetic EuO. Electrical transport measurements reveal different Tc and upper critical fields (Hc2) with current applied along the two orthogonal in-plane directions. Such anisotropy persistently occurs in the low-carrier-density samples that are characterized by strong coupling between Ta 5d and Eu 4f electrons, whereas in the high-carrier-density samples the coupling is weakened and Tc and Hc2 becomes isotropic. Complemented by local imaging of diamagnetism and theoretical analysis, our observations imply an unprecedented emergence of superconducting stripes wherein the phase coherence is established ahead of the rest of the interface, arising from a band-filling-dependent ferromagnetic proximity. The realization of such exotic superconducting states provides impetus for the study of novel physics in heterostructures possessing both magnetism and superconductivity.

Tunable two-dimensional superconductivity and spin-orbit coupling at the EuO/KTaO3(110) interface

Unconventional quantum states, most notably the two-dimensional (2D) superconductivity, have been realized at the interfaces of oxide heterostructures where they can be effectively tuned by the gate voltage ($V_G$). Here we report that the interface between high-quality EuO (111) thin film and KTaO3 (KTO) (110) substrate shows superconductivity with onset transition temperature $T_c^{onset}$ = 1.35 K. The 2D nature of superconductivity is verified by the large anisotropy of the upper critical field and the characteristics of a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. By applying $V_G$, $T_c^{onset}$ can be tuned from ~ 1 to 1.7 K; such an enhancement can be possibly associated with a boosted spin-orbit energy $ε_{so}$ = $\hbar$ / $τ_{so}$, where $τ_{so}$ is the spin-orbit relaxation time. Further analysis of $τ_{so}$ based on the upper critical field ($H_{c2}$) and magnetoconductance reveals complex nature of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) at the EuO/KTO(110) interface with different mechanisms dominate the influence of SOC effects for the superconductivity and the magnetotransport in the normal state. Our results demonstrate that the SOC should be considered as an important factor determining the 2D superconductivity at oxide interfaces.
