Development and characterization of the JNE concentrator

The Jinping Neutrino Experiment (JNE) will utilize approximately 3000 8-inch MCP-PMTs identified as GDB-6082 from North Night Vision Technology to detect neutrinos. To enhance the effective coverage of the JNE detector, mounting a custom-designed light concentrator on each PMT is a practical and economical approach. We measured angular responses of the concentration factor at four wavelengths in air medium for the concentrator with the selected cutoff angle of 70°. The measurements align with the Monte Carlo simulations. Furthermore, our results indicate that these concentrators can improve the efficiency of light collection by 40 % under parallel illumination conditions. This enhancement results in a slight increase in transit-time spread, with the full width at half maximum (FWHM) increasing by less than 0.3 ns. We conclude that the developed light concentrators are highly suitable for the JNE.

Structural design of the acrylic vessel for the Jinping Neutrino Experiment

The Jinping neutrino experiment is designed to have multiple purposes in the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. Following the acrylic vessel design requirements proposal, a structural scheme has been developed and optimized. Subsequently, the stability of the acrylic shell structure was calculated using finite element analysis, as well as the load-bearing capacities under various working conditions. Further, the effects of temperature changes, rope failures, and Young's modulus of the ropes on the static behavior of the structure were analyzed. The results indicated that the stress level and structural displacement of the structure scheme satisfies the design requirements, as well as the stability of the vessel under compression. Moreover, the stress and displacement of the acrylic shell satisfies the given working conditions and temperatures. The structural scheme ensures basic safety if the rope fails.

Query-Specific Knowledge Summarization with Entity Evolutionary Networks

Given a query, unlike traditional IR that finds relevant documents or entities, in this work, we focus on retrieving both entities and their connections for insightful knowledge summarization. For example, given a query "computer vision" on a CS literature corpus, rather than returning a list of relevant entities like "cnn", "imagenet" and "svm", we are interested in the connections among them, and furthermore, the evolution patterns of such connections along particular ordinal dimensions such as time. Particularly, we hope to provide structural knowledge relevant to the query, such as "svm" is related to "imagenet" but not "cnn". Moreover, we aim to model the changing trends of the connections, such as "cnn" becomes highly related to "imagenet" after 2010, which enables the tracking of knowledge evolutions. In this work, to facilitate such a novel insightful search system, we propose \textsc{SetEvolve}, which is a unified framework based on nonparanomal graphical models for evolutionary network construction from large text corpora. Systematic experiments on synthetic data and insightful case studies on real-world corpora demonstrate the utility of \textsc{SetEvolve}.

Graph Clustering with Dynamic Embedding

Graph clustering (or community detection) has long drawn enormous attention from the research on web mining and information networks. Recent literature on this topic has reached a consensus that node contents and link structures should be integrated for reliable graph clustering, especially in an unsupervised setting. However, existing methods based on shallow models often suffer from content noise and sparsity. In this work, we propose to utilize deep embedding for graph clustering, motivated by the well-recognized power of neural networks in learning intrinsic content representations. Upon that, we capture the dynamic nature of networks through the principle of influence propagation and calculate the dynamic network embedding. Network clusters are then detected based on the stable state of such an embedding. Unlike most existing embedding methods that are task-agnostic, we simultaneously solve for the underlying node representations and the optimal clustering assignments in an end-to-end manner. To provide more insight, we theoretically analyze our interpretation of network clusters and find its underlying connections with two widely applied approaches for network modeling. Extensive experimental results on six real-world datasets including both social networks and citation networks demonstrate the superiority of our proposed model over the state-of-the-art.

Design and analysis of a 1-ton prototype of the Jinping Neutrino Experiment

The Jinping Neutrino Experiment will perform an in-depth research on solar neutrinos and geo-neutrinos. Two structural options (i.e., cylindrical and spherical schemes) are proposed for the Jinping detector based on other successful underground neutrino detectors. Several key factors in the design are also discussed in detail. A 1-ton prototype of the Jinping experiment is proposed based on physics requirements. Subsequently, the structural design, installation procedure, and mechanical analysis of the neutrino detector prototype are discussed. The results show that the maximum Mises stresses on the acrylic vessel, stainless steel truss, and the tank are all lower than the design values of the strengths. The stability requirement of the stainless steel truss in the detector prototype is satisfied. Consequently, the structural scheme for the 1-ton prototype is safe and reliable.

Letter of Intent: Jinping Neutrino Experiment

Jinping Neutrino Experiment (Jinping) is proposed to significantly improve measurements on solar neutrinos and geoneutrinos in China Jinping Laboratory - a lab with a number of unparalleled features, thickest overburden, lowest reactor neutrino background, etc., which identify it as the world-best low-energy neutrino laboratory. The proposed experiment will have target mass of 4 kilotons of liquid scintillator or water-based liquid scintillator, with a fiducial mass of 2 kilotons for neutrino-electron scattering events and 3 kilotons for inverse-beta interaction events. A number of initial sensitivities studies have been carried out, including on the transition phase for the solar neutrinos oscillation from the vacuum to the matter effect, the discovery of solar neutrinos from the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle, the resolution of the high and low metallicity hypotheses, and the unambiguous separation on U and Th cascade decays from the dominant crustal anti-electron neutrinos in China.
