Coherence for logicians

This paper is addressed to logicians not familiar with category theory. It gives a new proof of coherence for symmetric monoidal closed categories, proven by Kelly and Mac Lane in the early 1970s. We find this result of great importance for proof theory and it is formulated here in pure logical terminology free of categorial notions. Coherence is related to the generality conjecture in general proof theory and we hope that our formulation will make it closer to the proof-theoretical community.

A diagrammatic calculus for categorical quantum protocols

As shown by Abramsky and Coecke, quantum mechanics can be studied in terms of dagger compact closed categories with biproducts. Within this structure, many well-known quantum protocols can be described and their validity can be shown by establishing the commutativity of certain diagrams in that category. In this paper, we propose an explicit realisation of a category with enough structure to check the validity of a certain class of quantum protocols. In order to do this, we construct a category based on 1-dimensional cobordisms with attached elements of a certain group freely generated by a finite set. We use this category as a graphical language, and we show that it is dagger compact closed with biproducts. Then, relying on the coherence result for compact closed categories, proved by Kelly and Laplaza, we show the coherence result, which enables us to check the validity of quantum protocols just by drawing diagrams. In particular, we show the validity of quantum teleportation, entanglement swapping (as formulated in the work of Abramsky and Coecke) and superdense coding protocol.

Chromatic numbers for facet colouring of some generalised associahedra

The chromatic number related to a colouring of facets of certain classes of generalised associahedra is studied. The exact values are obtained for permutohedra, associahedra and simple permutoassociahedra, while lower and upper bounds are established for cyclohedra and stellohedra. The asymptotic values of the chromatic numbers for associahedra, cyclohedra and simple permutoassociahedra are given.

A calculus for S^3-diagrams of manifolds with boundary

We introduce a diagrammatic language for compact, orientable 3-dimensional manifolds with boundary. A diagrammatic calculus (both integral and rational version) appropriate for this language is introduced and its completeness is proved in the paper. Moreover, a calculus consisting of a finite list of local moves is presented.

A diagrammatic presentation of the category 3Cob

A category equivalent to the category of 3-dimensional cobordisms is defined in terms of planar diagrams. The operation of composition in this category is completely described via these diagrams.

Coherence for closed categories with biproducts

A coherence result for symmetric monoidal closed categories with biproducts is shown in this paper. It is explained how to prove, by using the same technique, coherence for compact closed categories with biproducts and for dagger compact closed categories with dagger biproducts.

Proofs and surfaces

A formal sequent system dealing with Menelaus' configurations is introduced in this paper. The axiomatic sequents of the system stem from 2-cycles of Delta-complexes. The Euclidean and projective interpretations of the sequents are defined and a soundness result is proved. This system is decidable and its provable sequents deliver incidence results. A cyclic operad structure tied to this system is presented by generators and relations.

A faithful 2-dimensional TQFT

It has been shown in this paper that the commutative Frobenius algebra $QZ_5\otimes Z(QS_3)$ provides a complete invariant for two-dimensional cobordisms, i.e., that the corresponding two-dimensional quantum field theory is faithful. The essential role in the proof of this result plays Zsigmondy's Theorem.

Spheres as Frobenius objects

Following the pattern of the Frobenius structure usually assigned to the 1-dimensional sphere, we investigate the Frobenius structures of spheres in all other dimensions. Starting from dimension $d=1$, all the spheres are commutative Frobenius objects in categories whose arrows are ${(d+1)}$-dimensional cobordisms. With respect to the language of Frobenius objects, there is no distinction between these spheres---they are all free of additional equations formulated in this language. The corresponding structure makes out of the 0-dimensional sphere not a commutative but a symmetric Frobenius object. This sphere is mapped to a matrix Frobenius algebra by a 1-dimensional topological quantum field theory, which corresponds to the representation of a class of diagrammatic algebras given by Richard Brauer.

A simple permutoassociahedron

In the early 1990s, a family of combinatorial CW-complexes named permutoassociahedra was introduced by Kapranov, and it was realized by Reiner and Ziegler as a family of convex polytopes. The polytopes in this family are "hybrids" of permutohedra and associahedra. Since permutohedra and associahedra are simple, it is natural to search for a family of simple permutoassociahedra, which is still adequate for a topological proof of Mac Lane's coherence. This paper presents such a family.

On stretching the interval simplex-permutohedron

A family of polytopes introduced by E.M. Feichtner, A. Postnikov and B. Sturmfels, which were named nestohedra, consists in each dimension of an interval of polytopes starting with a simplex and ending with a permutohedron. This paper investigates a problem of changing and extending the boundaries of these intervals. An iterative application of Feichtner-Kozlov procedure of forming complexes of nested sets is a solution of this problem. By using a simple algebraic presentation of members of nested sets it is possible to avoid the problem of increasing the complexity of the structure of nested curly braces in elements of the produced simplicial complexes.

Representing Conjunctive Deductions by Disjunctive Deductions

A skeleton of the category with finite coproducts D freely generated by a single object has a subcategory isomorphic to a skeleton of the category with finite products C freely generated by a countable set of objects. As a consequence, we obtain that D has a subcategory equivalent with C. From a proof-theoretical point of view, this means that up to some identifications of formulae the deductions of pure conjunctive logic with a countable set of propositional letters can be represented by deductions in pure disjunctive logic with just one propositional letter. By taking opposite categories, one can replace coproduct by product, i.e. disjunction by conjunction, and the other way round, to obtain the dual results.

A note on semisymmetry

A survey of properties of the adjunction involving a semisymmetrization functor, which was suggested by J.D.H. Smith, and which maps the category of quasigroups with homotopies to the category of semisymmetric quasigroups with homomorphisms, is given. A new semisymmetrization functor is suggested. This functor maps a quasigroup to its square instead to its cube as it was the case with the former functor.

Weak Cat-Operads

An operad (this paper deals with non-symmetric operads)may be conceived as a partial algebra with a family of insertion operations, Gerstenhaber's circle-i products, which satisfy two kinds of associativity, one of them involving commutativity. A Cat-operad is an operad enriched over the category Cat of small categories, as a 2-category with small hom-categories is a category enriched over Cat. The notion of weak Cat-operad is to the notion of Cat-operad what the notion of bicategory is to the notion of 2-category. The equations of operads like associativity of insertions are replaced by isomorphisms in a category. The goal of this paper is to formulate conditions concerning these isomorphisms that ensure coherence, in the sense that all diagrams of canonical arrows commute. This is the sense in which the notions of monoidal category and bicategory are coherent. The coherence proof in the paper is much simplified by indexing the insertion operations in a context-independent way, and not in the usual manner. This proof, which is in the style of term rewriting, involves an argument with normal forms that generalizes what is established with the completeness proof for the standard presentation of symmetric groups. This generalization may be of an independent interest, and related to matters other than those studied in this paper. Some of the coherence conditions for weak Cat-operads lead to the hemiassociahedron, which is a polyhedron related to, but different from, the three-dimensional associahedron and permutohedron.

Monoids, Segal's condition and bisimplicial spaces

A characterization of simplicial objects in categories with finite products obtained by the reduced bar construction is given. The condition that characterizes such simplicial objects is a strictification of Segal's condition guaranteeing that the loop space of the geometric realization of a simplicial space $X$ and the space $X_1$ are of the same homotopy type. A generalization of Segal's result appropriate for bisimplicial spaces is given. This generalization gives conditions guaranteing that the double loop space of the geometric realization of a bisimplicial space $X$ and the space $X_{11}$ are of the same homotopy type.

Graphs for Juncture

An alternative foundation for 2-categories is explored by studying graph-theoretically a partial operation on 2-cells named juncture, which can replace vertical and horizontal composition. Juncture is a generalized vertical composition of 2-cells that need not involve the whole target and the whole source; it may involve them only partly, provided the result is again a 2-cell. Since commuting diagrams of arrows of ordinary categories may be conceived as invertible 2-cells, this study concerns ordinary category theory too. The operation of juncture has a connection with proof theory, where it corresponds to a kind of cut rule on sequents, and it is related also to an operation on which the notion of operad can be based. The main achievement of the work is a detailed description of the specific planarity involved in juncture and graphs of 2-cells, comparable to the usual combinatorial characterizations of planarity in graph theory. This work points out to an alternative foundation for bicategories, i.e. weak 2-categories, and more generally weak n-categories.

Segal's multisimplicial spaces

Some sufficient conditions on a simplicial space $X$ guaranteeing that $X_1\simeq Ω|X|$ were given by Segal. We give a generalization of this result for multisimplicial spaces. This generalization is appropriate for the reduced bar construction, providing an $n$-fold delooping of the classifying space of a category.
