Proton Radiography with Isotrajectory Optics

We consider a compact isotrajectory-optics scheme for proton radiography. The calculation uses a 30-60 MeV proton interval as a reference example, typical of high-energy short-pulse laser acceleration in the TNSA regime. The idea is to use synchronized time-dependent fields such that, for one selected energy-arrival-time branch, the proton energy changes mainly the arrival time and not the transverse image position. The reference lattice consists of four pulsed electric quadrupoles with horizontal sign pattern + - + -, magnification Mx = My = -3.0 at a detector plane of 2.57 m, a common Fourier plane at zF = 0.962 m, and equal outer and equal inner lens lengths. The ideal closure residual is calculated from second central moments. Fourth central moments are kept separately as a diagnostic of non-Gaussian tails. The quoted residual widths are numerical closure tests of the ideal map, not experimental resolution predictions. Real electrode fields, waveform errors, scattering, detector blur, and space charge define the next level of the problem.

Towards temporal characterization of intense isolated attosecond pulses from relativistic surface high harmonics

Relativistic surface high harmonics have been considered a unique source for the generation of intense isolated attosecond pulses in the extreme ultra-violet (XUV) and X-ray spectral range. However, its experimental realization is still a challenging task requiring identification of the optimum conditions for the generation of isolated attosecond pulses as well as their temporal characterization. Here, we demonstrate measurements in both directions. Particularly, we have made a first step towards the temporal characterization of the emitted XUV radiation by adapting the attosecond streak camera concept to identify the time domain characteristics of relativistic surface high harmonics. The results, supported by PIC simulations, set the upper limit for the averaged (over many shots) XUV duration to <6 fs, even when driven by not CEP controlled relativistic few-cycle optical pulses. Moreover, by measuring the dependence of the spectrum of the relativistic surface high harmonics on the carrier envelope phase (CEP) of the driving infrared laser field, we experimentally determined the optimum conditions for the generation of intense isolated attosecond pulses.

Observation of a strongly nested Fermi surface in the shape-memory alloy Ni[0.62]Al[0.38]

The Fermi surface topology of the shape-memory alloy Ni[0.62]Al[0.38] has been determined using Compton scattering. A large area of this Fermi surface can be made to nest with other areas by translation through a vector of ~ 0.18 [1,1,0] (2pi/a), which correponds to the wavevector associated with martensitic precursor phenomena such as phonon softening and diffuse streaking in electron diffraction patterns. This observation is compelling evidence that these phenomena are driven by the enhanced electron-lattice coupling due to the Fermi surface nesting.

Fermi surface nesting and charge-density wave formation in rare-earth tritellurides

The Fermi surface of rare-earth tri-tellurides ({\it R}Te$_{3}$) is investigated in terms of the nesting driven charge-density wave formation using positron annihilation and first-principles LMTO calculations. Fermi surface nesting is revealed as a strong candidate for driving charge-density wave formation in these compounds. The nesting vector obtained from positron annihilation experiments on GdTe$_{3}$ is determined to be ${\mathbf q} = (0.28\pm0.02,0,0) {\mathbf a}^{*}$, (${\mathbf a}^{*}=2π/{\mathbf a}$), in excellent agreement with previous experimental and theoretical studies.
