Effects of disorder on the magnetic properties of the Heusler alloy V$_{2}$FeAl

Magnetic properties of multicomponent alloys depend sensitively on the degree of atomic order on the different crystallographic sites. In this work we demonstrate the magnetic contrast between bulk and thin-film samples of the Heusler alloy V$_{2}$FeAl. Arc-melted bulk ingots show practically no site preference of the elements (A2 structure), whereas magnetron-sputtered thin-film samples display a higher degree of atomic ordering with a tendency towards XA-type order. Electronic structure calculations favour ferrimagnetic XA-type ordering, and the effect of different pairwise atomic disorder on the element specific and net magnetic moments are evaluated to reproduce experimental observations. XA-type thin-films with iron moment of 1.24 $\mu_{\mathrm{B}}$ determined by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism are in agreement with calculation, but the measured net moment of 1.0 $\mu_{\mathrm{B}}$ per formula unit and average vanadium moment are smaller than expected from calculations. The measured Curie temperature is approximately 500 K. Films with a higher degree of disorder have a T$_{\mathrm{C}}$ close to 300 K with a net moment of 0.1 $\mu_{\mathrm{B}}$ at low temperature. The large calculated vanadium moments are destroyed by partial disorder on $4d$ vanadium sites. By contrast, the arc-melted and annealed bulk alloy with a fully-disordered A2 structure shows no spontaneous magnetization; it is a Pauli paramagnet with dimensionless susceptibility $\chi_{\mathrm{v}}=-2.95\times10^{-4}$.

Au4Mn, a localized ferromagnet with strong spin-orbit coupling, long-range ferromagnetic exchange and high Curie temperature

Metallic Mn-based alloys with a nearest-neighbor Mn-Mn distance greater than 0.4 nm exhibit large, well-localized magnetic moments. Here we investigate the magnetism of tetragonal Au4Mn with a Curie temperature of 385 K, where manganese has a spin moment of 4.1 muB and its orbital moment is quenched. Since 80% of the atoms are gold, the spin orbit interaction is strong and Au4Mn exhibits uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy with surface maze domains at room temperature. The magnetic hardness parameter of 1.0 is sufficient to maintain the magnetization along the c-axis for a sample of any shape. Au also reduces the spin moment of Mn through 5d-3d orbital hybridization. An induced moment of 0.05 muB was found on Au under a pulsed field of 40 T. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the Mn-Mn exchange is mediated by spin-polarized gold 5d and 6p electrons. The distance-dependence shows that it is ferromagnetic or zero for the first ten shells of Mn neighbors out to 1.041 nm (64 atoms), and very weak and oscillatory thereafter.

Rare-earth-free noncollinear metallic ferrimagnets Mn4-xZxN with compensation at room temperature

Compensated ferrimagnets, like antiferromagnets, show no net magnetization but their transport and magneto-optic properties resemble those of ferromagnets, thereby creating opportunities for applications in high-frequency spintronics and low-energy loss communications. Here we study the modification the noncollinear ferrimagnetic spin structure of Mn4N by a variety of metallic substitutions Z (Z = Cu - Ge and Ag - Sn) to achieve compensation at room temperature. The noncollinear frustrated 2.35 Bohr magneton moments of Mn on 3c sites of the (111) kagome planes tilt about 20 degree out-of-plane in Mn4N and are easily influenced by the substitutions on 1a sites, leading to different efficiency of compensation in Mn4-xZxN that increases gradually from group 11 (Cu, Ag) to group 14 (Ge, Sn) with increasing number of valance electrons. Elements from the 5th period are more efficient for compensation than those from the 4th period due to lattice expansion. The manganese site moments are determined by Z, orbital hybridization, charge transfer and the tilt angle, analyzed by constrained density functional theory. The Ga compound with compensation at room temperature for x = 0.26 is recommended for high-frequency spintronic applications.

Piezomagnetic effect as a counterpart of negative thermal expansion in magnetically frustrated Mn-based antiperovskite nitrides

Electric-field control of magnetization promises to substantially enhance the energy efficiency of device applications ranging from data storage to solid-state cooling. However, the intrinsic linear magnetoelectric effect is typically small in bulk materials. In thin films electric-field tuning of spin-orbit interaction phenomena (e.g., magnetocrystalline anisotropy) has been reported to achieve a partial control of the magnetic state. Here we explore the piezomagnetic effect (PME), driven by frustrated exchange interactions, which can induce a net magnetization in an antiferromagnet and reverse its direction via elastic strain generated piezoelectrically. Our $ab~initio$ study of PME in Mn-antiperovskite nitrides identified an extraordinarily large PME in Mn$_3$SnN available at room temperature. We explain the magnitude of PME based on features of the electronic structure and show an inverse-proportionality between the simulated zero-temperature PME and the negative thermal expansion at the magnetic (Néel) transition measured by Takenaka et al. in 9 antiferromagnetic Mn$_3$AN systems.

The dynamics of spontaneous hydrogen segregation in LaFe$_{13-x}$Si$_x$H$_y$

By means of time- and temperature-dependent magnetization measurements, we demonstrate that the timescale of hydrogen diffusion in partially-hydrogenated LaFe$_{13-x}$Si$_x$H$_y$ is of the order of hours, when the material is held at temperatures close to its as-prepared Curie temperature, $T_{C0}$. The diffusion constant is estimated to be $D \approx 10^{-15}$ - $10^{-16}$ m$^2$s$^{-1}$ at room temperature. We examine the evolution of a magnetically phase-separated state upon annealing for 3 days at a range of temperatures around $T_{C0}$, and show that the thermodynamic driving force behind hydrogen diffusion and phase segregation may be attributed to the lower free energy of hydrogen interstitials in the ferromagnetic state relative to the paramagnetic state.

Designed Metamagnetism in CoMnGe_{1-x}P_{x}

We extend our previous theoretical study of Mn-based orthorhombic metamagnets to those that possess large nearest neighbour Mn-Mn separations (d1>3.22A). Based on our calculations, we design and synthesize a series of alloys, CoMnGe_{1-x}P_{x}, to experimentally demonstrate the validity of the model. Unusually, we predict and prepare several metamagnets from two ferromagnetic end-members, thus demonstrating a new example of how to vary crystal structure, within the Pnma symmetry group, to provide highly tunable metamagnetism.
