An Attempt of Adaptive Heightfield Rendering with Complex Interpolants Using Ray Casting

In this technical report, we document our attempt to visualize adaptive heightfields with smooth interpolation using ray casting in real time. The performance of ray casting depends strongly on the used interpolant and its efficient evaluation. Unfortunately, analytical solutions for ray-surface intersections are only given in the literature for very few simple, piece-wise polynomial surfaces. In our use case, we approximate the heightfield with radial basis functions defined on an adaptive grid, for which we propose a two-step solution: First, we reconstruct and discretize the currently visible portion of the surface with smooth approximation into a set of off-screen buffers. In a second step, we interpret these off-screen buffers as regular heightfields that can be rendered efficiently with ray casting using a simple bilinear interpolant. While our approach works, our quantitative evaluation shows that the performance depends strongly on the complexity and size of the heightfield. Real-time performance cannot be achieved for arbitrary heightfields, which is why we report our findings as a failed attempt to use ray casting for practical geospatial visualization in real time.

Criticality and Big Brake singularities in the tachyonic evolutions of closed Friedmann universes with cold dark matter

The evolution of a closed Friedmann universe filled by a tachyon scalar field with a trigonometric potential and cold dark matter (CDM) is investigated. A subset of the evolutions consistent to 1$σ$ confidence level with the Union 2.1 supernova data set is identified. The evolutions of the tachyon field are classified. Some of them evolve into a de Sitter attractor, while others proceed through a pseudo-tachyonic regime into a sudden future singularity. Critical evolutions leading to Big Brake singularities in the presence of CDM are found and a new type of cosmological evolution characterized by singularity avoidance in the pseudo-tachyon regime is presented.

Black hole tidal charge constrained by strong gravitational lensing

Spherically symmetric brane black holes have tidal charge, which modifies both weak and strong lensing characteristics. Even if lensing measurements are in agreement with a Schwarzschild lens, the margin of error of the detecting instrument allows for a certain tidal charge. In this paper we derive the respective constraint on the tidal charge of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in the center of our galaxy, from the radius of the first relativistic Einstein ring, emerging in strong lensing. We find that even if general relativistic predictions are confirmed by high precision strong lensing measurements, SMBHs could have a much larger tidal charge, than the Sun or neutron stars.

Weak gravitational lensing by compact objects in fourth order gravity

We discuss weak lensing characteristics in the gravitational field of a compact object in the low-energy approximation of fourth order f(R) gravity theory. The particular solution is characterized by a gravitational strength parameter $σ$ and a distance scale $r_{c}$ much larger than the Schwarzschild radius. Above $r_{c}$ gravity is strengthened and as a consequence weak lensing features are modified compared to the Schwarzschild case. We find a critical impact parameter (depending upon $r_{c}$) for which the behavior of the deflection angle changes. Using the Virbhadra-Ellis lens equation we improve the computation of the image positions, Einstein ring radii, magnification factors and the magnification ratio. We demonstrate that the magnification ratio as function of image separation obeys a power-law depending on the parameter $σ$, with a double degeneracy. No $σ\neq 0$ value gives the same power as the one characterizing Schwarzschild black holes. As the magnification ratio and the image separation are the lensing quantities most conveniently determined by direct measurements, future lensing surveys will be able to constrain the parameter $σ$ based on this prediction.

Constraining Hořava-Lifshitz gravity by weak and strong gravitational lensing

We discuss gravitational lensing in the Kehagias-Sfetsos space-time emerging in the framework of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. In weak lensing we show that there are three regimes, depending on the value of $\bar λ=1/ωd^{2}$, where $ω$ is the Hořava-Lifshitz parameter and $d$ characterizes the lensing geometry. When $\bar λ$ is close to zero, light deflection typically produces two images, as in Schwarzschild lensing. For very large $\bar λ$ the space-time approaches flatness, therefore there is only one undeflected image. In the intermediate range of $\bar λ$ only the upper focused image is produced due to the existence of a maximal deflection angle $δ_{max}$, a feature inexistent in the Schwarzschild weak lensing. We also discuss the location of Einstein rings, and determine the range of the Hořava-Lifshitz parameter compatible with present day lensing observations. Finally, we analyze in the strong lensing regime the first two relativistic Einstein rings and determine the constraints on the parameter range to be imposed by forthcoming experiments.

Image formation in weak gravitational lensing by tidal charged black holes

We derive a generic weak lensing equation and apply it for the study of images produced by tidal charged brane black holes. We discuss the similarities and point out the differences with respect to the Schwarzschild black hole weak lensing, to both first and second order accuracy, when either the mass or the tidal charge dominates. In the case of mass dominated weak lensing, we analyze the position of the images, the magnification factors and the flux ratio, as compared to the Schwarzschild lensing. The most striking modification appears in the flux ratio. When the tidal charge represents the dominating lensing effect, the number and orientation of the images with respect to the optical axis resembles the lensing properties of a Schwarzschild geometry, where the sign associated with the mass is opposite to that for the tidal charge. Finally it is found that the ratio of the brightness of images as a function of image separation in the case of tidal charged black holes obeys a power-law relation significantly different from that for Schwarzschild black holes. This might provide a means for determining the underlying spacetime structure.

Canonical Analysis of Radiating Atmospheres of Stars in Equilibrium

The spherically symmetric, static spacetime generated by a cross-flow of non-interacting null dust streams can be conveniently interpreted as the radiation atmosphere of a star, which also receives exterior radiation. Formally, such a superposition of sources is equivalent to an anisotropic fluid. Therefore, there is a preferred time function in the system, defined by this reference fluid. This internal time is employed as a canonical coordinate, in order to linearize the Hamiltonian constraint. This turns to be helpful in the canonical quantization of the geometry of the radiating atmosphere.

Canonical theory of the Kantowski-Sachs cosmological models

We briefly discuss the Hamiltonian formalism of Kantowski-Sachs space-times with vacuum, anisotropic fluid and two cross-streaming radiation field sources. For these models a cosmological time is introduced. New constraints are found in which the fluid momenta are separated from the rest of the variables. In consequence their Poisson brackets give an Abelian algebra.

Geometrodynamics in a spherically symmetric, static crossflow of null dust

The spherically symmetric, static spacetime generated by a crossflow of non-interacting radiation streams, treated in the geometrical optics limit (null dust) is equivalent to an anisotropic fluid forming a radiation atmosphere of a star. This reference fluid provides a preferred / internal time, which is employed as a canonical coordinate. Among the advantages we encounter a new Hamiltonian constraint, which becomes linear in the momentum conjugate to the internal time (therefore yielding a functional Schrödinger equation after quantization), and a strongly commuting algebra of the new constraints.
