Effective positivity of Hodge bundles and applications

We prove new boundedness results across different areas of algebraic geometry, stemming from a unifying technical starting point: bounding the integer $q > 0$ such that the $q$-th Hodge bundle becomes (semi-)positive for families of stable varieties. This result allows us to show that for stable families $f: X \to T$ of maximal variation with klt general fiber and relative dimension $n$ there exist the following bounds: 1) a lower bound for the Chow-Mumford volume $\left( λ_{CM,f} \right)^{\dim T}$ of the form $δ^{\dim T}$, where $δ$ is uniform; 2) a uniform lower bound on $K_{X/T}^{n+1}$, when $T$ is a curve; 3) an upper bound for $|\mathrm{Aut}(f)|$ when $T$ is a curve, depending uniformly linearly on $K_{X/T}^{n+1}$. Additionally, we draw several several consequences on the subspaces of the moduli space of stable varieties parametrizing at least one klt variety, such as the positivity of Hodge bundles and a lower bound on the Chow-Mumford volume in terms of the dimension and the volume of the parametrized varieties (the volume is needed only if working on the coarse moduli space). We also give pair versions of the above results with coefficients varying in a DCC set.

Perfectoid pure singularities

Fix a prime number $p$. Inspired by the notion of $F$-pure or $F$-split singularities, we study the condition that a Noetherian ring with $p$ in its Jacobson radical is pure inside some perfectoid (classical) ring, a condition we call perfectoid pure. We also study a related a priori weaker condition which asks that $R$ is pure in its absolute perfectoidization, a condition we call lim-perfectoid pure. We show that both these notions coincide when $R$ is LCI. Mixed characteristic analogs of $F$-injective and Du Bois singularities are also explored. We study these notions of singularity, proving that they are weakly normal and that they are Du Bois after inverting $p$. We also explore the behavior of \claperfdpure singularities under finite covers and their relation to log canonical singularities. Finally, we prove an inversion of adjunction result in the LCI setting, and use it to prove that many common examples are perfectoid pure.

On Gorenstein $\mathbb{Q}_p$-rational threefold and fourfold singularities

We prove that for $n \leq 4$ and $p > 5$, quasi--Gorenstein $F$--pure and $\mathbb{Q}_p$--rational $n$--fold singularities are canonical. This is analogous to the usual fact that rational Gorenstein singularities are canonical. The proof is based on a careful analysis of the dual complex of a dlt modification of a log canonical singularity. The result for $n = 4$ is contingent upon the existence of log resolutions.

A strong counterexample to the log canonical Beauville--Bogomolov decomposition

For every $d \geq 4$, we construct a $d$-dimensional, log canonical, $K$-trivial variety with the property that two general fibers of its Albanese morphism are not birational. This provides a strong counterexample to the Beauville--Bogomolov decomposition in the log canonical setting. This construction can also be adapted to construct a smooth quasi-projective variety of logarithmic Kodaira dimension 0 whose quasi-Albanese morphism has maximal variation. On the positive side, we show that the Albanese morphism for log canonical pairs with nef anti-canonical class is a locally stable family of pairs.

On rational chain connectedness of globally +-regular varieties

We prove that globally $+$-regular varieties are rationally chain connected in dimension three and mixed characteristic with residue field characteristic $p>5$. We also introduce a notion of strongly globally $+$-regular, and show that varieties of arbitrary dimension which are strongly globally $+$-regular over a dense open subset of $\mathrm{Spec}(\mathbb{Z})$ are rationally chain connected.

On surfaces with smooth projective models over $\mathbb{Z}$

In this expository article, we prove a birational classification of smooth projective models of surfaces with negative Kodaira dimension over $\mathbb{Z}$ and over more general rings of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$, depending on their arithmetic and cohomological invariants. Along the way we collect some results on smooth projective models of surfaces over Dedekind domains.

The weak Beauville--Bogomolov decomposition in characteristic $p\geq 0$

We prove a variant of the Beauville--Bogomolov decomposition for weakly ordinary, or generally globally $F$-split, varieties $X$ with $K_X \sim 0$, in characteristic $p>0$. We also show that the weakly ordinary assumption in our statement cannot be dropped. Additionally, if the assumption $K_X \sim 0$ is replaced by $-K_X$ being semi-ample, we show the weaker statement that all closed fibers of the Albanese morphism are isomorphic. Finally, we apply our main theorem to draw consequences to the behavior of rational points and fundamental groups of weakly ordinary $K$-trivial varieties in positive characteristic.

Test ideals in mixed characteristic: a unified theory up to perturbation

Let $X$ be an integral scheme of finite type over a complete DVR of mixed characteristic. We provide a definition of a test ideal which agrees with the multiplier ideal after inverting $p$, is computed from a sufficiently large alteration, agrees with previous mixed characteristic BCM test ideals after completing at any point of residue characteristic $p$ (up to small perturbation), and which satisfies the full suite of expected properties of a multiplier or test ideal. This object is obtained via the $p$-adic Riemann-Hilbert functor.

Varieties with ample Frobenius-trace kernel

In the search of a projective analog of Kunz's theorem and a Frobenius-theoretic analog of Mori--Hartshorne's theorem, we investigate the positivity of the kernel of the Frobenius trace (equivalently, the negativity of the cokernel of the Frobenius endomorphism) on a smooth projective variety over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. For instance, such kernel is ample for projective spaces. Conversely, we show that for curves, surfaces, and threefolds the Frobenius trace kernel is ample only for Fano varieties of Picard rank $1$.

Pseudo-effectivity of the relative canonical divisor and uniruledness in positive characteristic

We show that if $f\colon X \to T$ is a surjective morphism between smooth projective varieties over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ with geometrically integral and non-uniruled generic fiber, then $K_{X/T}$ is pseudo-effective. The proof is based on covering $X$ with rational curves, which gives a contradiction as soon as both the base and the generic fiber are not uniruled. However, we assume only that the generic fiber is not uniruled. Hence, the hardest part of the proof is to show that there is a finite smooth non-uniruled cover of the base for which we show the following: If $T$ is a smooth projective variety over $k$ and $\mathcal{A}$ is an ample enough line bundle, then a cyclic cover of degree $p \nmid d$ given by a general element of $\left|\mathcal{A}^d\right|$ is not uniruled. For this we show the following cohomological uniruledness condition, which might be of independent interest: A smooth projective variety $T$ of dimenion $n$ is not uniruled whenever the dimension of the semi-stable part of $H^n(T, \mathcal{O}_T)$ is greater than that of $H^{n-1}(T, \mathcal{O}_T)$. Additionally, we also show singular versions of all the above statements.

On the properness of the moduli space of stable surfaces over $\mathbb{Z}[1/30]$

We show the properness of the moduli stack of stable surfaces over $\mathbb{Z}[1/30]$, assuming the locally-stable reduction conjecture for stable surfaces. This relies on a local Kawamata--Viehweg vanishing theorem for for 3-dimensional log canonical singularities at closed point of characteristic $p \neq 2, 3$ and $5$ which are not log canonical centres.

A note on families of K-semistable log-Fano pairs

In this short note, we give an alternative proof of the semipositivity of the Chow-Mumford line bundle for families of K-semistable log-Fano pairs, and of the nefness threeshold for the log-anti-canonical line bundle on families of K-stable log Fano pairs. We also prove a bound on the multiplicity of fibers for families of K-semistable log Fano varieties, which to the best of our knowledge is new.

The Demailly--Peternell--Schneider conjecture is true in positive characteristic

We prove the Demailly--Peternell--Schneider conjecture in positive characteristic: if $X$ is a smooth projective variety over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ with $-K_X$ is nef, then the Albanese morphism $a: X \to A$ is surjective. We also show strengthenings either allowing mild singularities for $X$, or proving more special properties of $a$. The above statement for compact Kähler manifolds was conjectured originally by Demailly, Peternell and Schneider in 1993, and for smooth projective varieties of characteristic zero it was shown by Zhang in 1996. In positive characteristic, all earlier results involved tameness assumptions either on cohomology or on the singularities of the general fibers of $a$. The main feature of the present article is the development of a technology to avoid such assumptions.

Wall crossing for moduli of stable log pairs

We prove, under suitable conditions, that there exist wall-crossing and reduction morphisms for moduli spaces of stable log pairs in all dimensions as one varies the coefficients of the divisor.

Ordinary varieties with trivial canonical bundle are not uniruled

We prove that smooth, projective, $K$-trivial, weakly ordinary varieties over a perfect field of characteristic $p>0$ are not geometrically uniruled. We also show a singular version of our theorem, which is sharp in multiple aspects. Our work, together with Langer's results, implies that varieties of the above type have strongly semistable tangent bundles with respect to any polarization.

Positivity of the CM line bundle for families of K-stable klt Fano varieties

The Chow-Mumford (CM) line bundle is a functorial line bundle on the base of any family of klt Fano varieties. It is conjectured that it yields a polarization on the moduli space of K-poly-stable klt Fano varieties. Proving ampleness of the CM line bundle boils down to showing semi-positivity/positivity statements about the CM-line bundle for families with K-semi-stable/K-polystable fibers. We prove the necessary semi-positivity statements in the K-semi-stable situation, and the necessary positivity statements in the uniform K-stable situation, including in both cases variants assuming K-stability only for general fibers. Our statements work in the most general singular situation (klt singularities), and the proofs are algebraic, except the computation of the limit of a sequence of real numbers via the central limit theorem of probability theory. We also present an application to the classification of Fano varieties. Additionally, our semi-positivity statements work in general for log-Fano pairs.
