On the operator homology of the Fourier algebra and its $cb$-multiplier completion

We study various operator homological properties of the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ of a locally compact group $G$. Establishing the converse of two results of Ruan and Xu, we show that $A(G)$ is relatively operator 1-projective if and only if $G$ is IN, and that $A(G)$ is relatively operator 1-flat if and only if $G$ is inner amenable. We also exhibit the first known class of groups for which $A(G)$ is not relatively operator $C$-flat for any $C\geq1$. As applications of our techniques, we establish a hereditary property of inner amenability, answer an open question of Lau and Paterson, and answer an open question of Anantharaman--Delaroche on the equivalence of inner amenability and Property (W). In the bimodule setting, we show that relative operator 1-biflatness of $A(G)$ is equivalent to the existence of a contractive approximate indicator for the diagonal $G_Δ$ in the Fourier--Stieltjes algebra $B(G\times G)$, thereby establishing the converse to a result of Aristov, Runde, and Spronk. We conjecture that relative $1$-biflatness of $A(G)$ is equivalent to the existence of a quasi-central bounded approximate identity in $L^1(G)$, that is, $G$ is QSIN, and verify the conjecture in many special cases. We finish with an application to the operator homology of $A_{cb}(G)$, giving examples of weakly amenable groups for which $A_{cb}(G)$ is not operator amenable.

Weak separation properties for closed subgroups of locally compact groups

Three separation properties for a closed subgroup $H$ of a locally compact group $G$ are studied: (1) the existence of a bounded approximate indicator for $H$, (2) the existence of a completely bounded invariant projection of $VN\left(G\right)$ onto $VN_{H}\left(G\right)$, and (3) the approximability of the characteristic function $χ_{H}$ by functions in $M_{cb}A\left(G\right)$ with respect to the weak$^{*}$ topology of $M_{cb}A\left(G_{d}\right)$. We show that the $H$-separation property of Kaniuth and Lau is characterized by the existence of certain bounded approximate indicators for $H$ and that a discretized analogue of the $H$-separation property is equivalent to (3). Moreover, we give a related characterization of amenability of $H$ in terms of any group $G$ containing $H$ as a closed subgroup. The weak amenability of $G$ or that $G_{d}$ satisfies the approximation property, in combination with the existence of a natural projection (in the sense of Lau and Ülger), are shown to suffice to conclude (3). Several consequences of (2) involving the cb-multiplier completion of $A\left(G\right)$ are given. Finally, a convolution technique for averaging over the closed subgroup $H$ is developed and used to weaken a condition for the existence of a bounded approximate indicator for $H$.

Approximate indicators for closed subgroups of locally compact groups with applications to weakly amenable groups

We generalize the notion of an approximate indicator for a closed subgroup $H$ of a locally compact group $G$ introduced by Aristov, Runde, and Spronk and extend their characterization of the existence of such nets in terms of the approximability of $χ_{H}$ in an appropriate ${weak}^{*}$ topology. We find that this equivalent condition is satisfied whenever $H$ is weakly amenable and $χ_{H}$, considered as acting on $\ell^{1}(G)$ by multiplication, extends to a bounded map on $VN(G)$. This occurs in particular when a natural projection $VN(G)arrow I(A(G),H)^{\perp}$ exists. Applications are obtained to the existence (and non-existence) of natural and invariant projections onto $I(A(G),H)^{\perp}$ and $I(A_{cb}(G),H)^{\perp}$ and to the existence of ($Δ$-weak) bounded approximate identities in ideals of $A(G)$ and $A_{cb}(G)$. In particular, we exhibit a locally compact group without the invariant complementation property.
