Simultaneous estimation of relative phase and coherence in astronomical interferometry

Astronomical interferometry is a cornerstone technique for high-resolution stellar imaging and observational astrophysics, extracting spatial information from the coherence of light collected by separated telescopes. Since the degree of coherence is complex, a genuine imaging task requires the joint recovery of the modulus and the relative phase, instead of independent singleparameter estimations. We investigate the simultaneous estimation of both parameters based on direct interferometry scheme and continuou-svariable quantum teleportation scheme. We find that in simultaneous estimation the direct interferometry scheme consistently yields a lower quantum Cramér-Rao bound, demonstrating its superiority over the continuous-variable quantum teleportation scheme. Furthermore, we establish the conditions under which the classical Cramér-Rao bound for Gaussian measurements saturates the quantum Cramér-Rao bound, identifying heterodyne detection as a near-optimal measurement scheme in the large mean photon number regime. An analysis of transmission loss reveals that the direct interferometry scheme yields superior precision in the short-baseline regime, whereas the continuous-variable quantum teleportation scheme outperforms it at longer baselines.

Stable (2+1)-dimensional soliton and breather molecules in a cold Rydberg atomic gas

We investigate the formation of stable (2+1)-dimensional spatial-domain optical soliton molecules and breather molecules in a gas of Rydberg atoms, highlighting the role of the nonlocal nonlinearity, which is generated by the electromagnetically induced transparency in the Rydberg medium. The setting supports diverse species of large-size polygonal soliton molecules, including rectangular and oblique rhombuses, checkerboard cells, and hexagons. The analysis identifies two distinct formation regimes. In the case of moderately nonlocality, the long-range interactions alone stabilize the soliton molecules in the static form. In contrast, in the strongly nonlocal regime, initially imposed rotation is required to generate a centrifugal force that counteracts the strong attraction, resulting in stably rotating soliton molecules. The rotation period can be controlled by adjusting the system parameters. Furthermore, appropriate initial velocities can induce inherent breathing dynamics in the solitons, leading to the formation of breather molecules. Tuning the initial velocity, one can control the evolution of soliton molecules and breather molecules and even realize their mutual conversion. Our study offers a new scheme for engineering soliton molecules and breather molecules, and suggests new possibilities for the design of data processing and transmission in optical systems.

Impact of the Unruh effect on the estimation precision of Gaussian channel parameters

Gaussian quantum channels constitute a pivotal physical framework for characterizing the dynamics of Gaussian quantum states. Extensive scholarly attention has been devoted to the estimation of parameters associated with Gaussian channels. However, while previous research has predominantly focused on parameter estimation within inertial frames, the noninertial scenario, particularly in the context of the Unruh effect, remains largely unexplored. In this paper, we analyze the impact of the Unruh effect on the estimation precision of Gaussian channel parameters, with a specific focus on thermal attenuator and thermal amplifier channels. Our findings reveal that the Unruh effect significantly degrades the precision of single-parameter estimation for Gaussian channel parameters when employing both the input coherent state and squeezed vacuum state. For the two-parameter estimation, we further demonstrate that the quantum Cramér-Rao bound serves as an asymptotically achievable precision limit. Consistent with the single-parameter case, the Unruh effect exerts a detrimental impact on the precision of two-parameter estimation. Notably, heterodyne measurement is near-optimal for both single- and two-parameter estimation in the limit of high acceleration or large thermal mean numbers. These results provide crucial theoretical insights and practical guidance for advancing quantum parameter estimation in a relativistic context.

Dissipative Quantum Battery in the Ultrastrong Coupling Regime Between Two Oscillators

In this work, we propose an open quantum battery that stores and releases energy by employing a two-mode ultrastrongly coupled bosonic system, with one mode (the charger) coupled to an independent heat reservoir. Our results demonstrate that both the charging energy and ergotropy of the quantum batteries can be significantly enhanced within the ultra-strong coupling regime and across a broader temperature range in transient time. A unidirectional energy flow is achieved by controlling the system's initial state through its two-mode squeezed ground state. Furthermore, we show that the steady-state stored energy, along with its corresponding ergotropy, can be enhanced at larger temperatures and stronger coupling strengths. Notably, a purely beam-splitter or two-mode squeezing interaction yields zero ergotropy. These findings indicate that the enhanced stored energy and ergotropy of the quantum battery arises principally from the combined effects of beam-splitter and parametric amplification (squeezing) couplings. In addition, the presence of the squared electromagnetic vector potential term can prevent a phase transition and achieve a significant charging energy and high ergotropy in the deep-strong coupling regime. The results presented herein enhance our understanding of the operating principles of open bosonic quantum batteries.

Multiparameter quantum estimation with a uniformly accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detector

The uniformly accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detector serves as a fundamental model in relativistic quantum metrology. While previous studies have mainly concentrated on single-parameter estimation via quantum Cramér-Rao bound, the multi-parameter case remains significantly underexplored. In this paper, we investigate the multiparameter estimation for a uniformly accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detector coupled to a vacuum scalar field in both bounded and unbounded Minkowski vacuum. Our analysis reveals that quantum Cramér-Rao bound fails to provide a tight error bound for the two-parameter estimation involving the initial phase and weight parameters. For this reason, we numerically compute two tighter error bounds, Holevo Cramér-Rao bound and Nagaoka bound, based on a semidefinite program. Notably, our results demonstrate that Nagaoka bound yields the tightest error bound among all the considered error bounds, consistent with the general hierarchy of multiparameter quantum estimation. In the case with a boundary, we observe the introduction of boundary systematically reduces the values of both Holevo Cramér-Rao bound and Nagaoka bound, indicating an improvement on the attainable estimation precision. These results offer valuable insights on and practical guidance for advancing multiparameter estimation in relativistic context.

Quantum entanglement and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering in ultrastrongly light-matter coupled system

This work presents a scheme for engineering quantum entanglement and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering with Gaussian measurements based on the quantum Hopfield model that incorporates a common thermal reservoir. We begin by examining quantum correlations, specifically quantum entanglement and EPR steering, in the ground state. These quantum correlations primarily stem from squeezing interactions in weak and normal strong coupling regimes. As the coupling strength increases, especially upon entering the ultrastrong coupling regime, the correlations emerge from the combined effect of squeezing and mix-mode interactions. Importantly, this scenario enables the realization of two-way EPR steering. Moreover, lower optical frequencies enhance both quantum entanglement and EPR steering. Further, when considering thermal effects, the ultrastrong and deep strong coupling regimes, paired with lower optical frequencies, lead to improved entanglement. The one-way EPR steering for resonant case can be effectively controlled in the ultrastrong and deep strong coupling regimes which originates from the asymmetry of subsystem and reservoir coupling induced by the diamagnetic term. Additionally, one-way EPR steering can also be produced for nonresonant case. In this case, the asymmetry of the subsystem and reservoir originates from the combined effect of nonresonant frequencies and diamagnetic term. Our findings have the potential to inspire further research into quantum information processing that leverages light-matter entanglement and EPR steering.

Bright solitons in a spin-orbit-coupled dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate trapped within a double-lattice

By effectively controlling the dipole-dipole interaction, we investigate the characteristics of the ground state of bright solitons in a spin-orbit coupled dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate. The dipolar atoms are trapped within a double-lattice which consists of a linear and a nonlinear lattice. We derive the motion equations of the different spin components, taking the controlling mechanisms of the diolpe-dipole interaction into account. An analytical expression of dipole-dipole interaction is derived. By adjusting the dipole polarization angle, the dipole interaction can be adjusted from attraction to repulsion. On this basis, we study the generation and manipulation of the bright solitons using both the analytical variational method and numerical imaginary time evolution. The stability of the bright solitons is also analyzed and we map out the stability phase diagram. By adjusting the long-range dipole-dipole interaction, one can achieve manipulation of bright solitons in all aspects, including the existence, width, nodes, and stability. Considering the complexity of our system, our results will have enormous potential applications in quantum simulation of complex systems.

Symmetry-protected higher-order exceptional points in staggered flatband rhombic lattices

Higher-order exceptional points (EPs), which appear as multifold degeneracies in the spectra of non-Hermitian systems, are garnering extensive attention in various multidisciplinary fields. However, constructing higher-order EPs still remains as a challenge due to the strict requirement of the system symmetries. Here we demonstrate that higher-order EPs can be judiciously fabricated in PT -symmetric staggered rhombic lattices by introducing not only on-site gain/loss but also nonHermitian couplings. Zero-energy flatbands persist and symmetry-protected third-order EPs (EP3) arise in these systems owing to the non-Hermitian chiral/sublattice symmetry, but distinct phase transitions and propagation dynamics occur. Specifically, the EP3 arises at the Brillouin zone (BZ) boundary in the presence of on-site gain/loss. The single-site excitations display an exponential power increase in the PT -broken phase. Meanwhile, a nearly flatband sustains when a small lattice perturbation is applied. For the lattices with non-Hermitian couplings, however, the EP3 appears at the BZ center. Quite remarkably, our analysis unveils a dynamical delocalization-localization transition for the excitation of the dispersive bands and a quartic power increase beyond the EP3. Our scheme provides a new platform towards the investigation of the higher-order EPs, and can be further extended to the study of topological phase transitions or nonlinear processes associated with higher-order EPs.
