Multiscale simulation of three-dimensional thin-film lubrication

For three-dimensional mono-layer molecularly thin-film lubrication, it is found that elasticity of the substrate affects tribological behaviors of a thin fluid film confined by two solid substrates. To account for the elastic effects, a multiscale method that combines an atomistic description of the near region with a coarse-grained description of the far region of the solid substrate is developed to simulate the thin-film lubrication. It is shown that in a range of temperature and film-substrate coupling strength, the multiscale method yields results in excellently agreement with those obtained from the fully atomistic simulation. It reveals that the elastic response of substrate can be effectively rendered in the hybrid scheme. In the application of the multiscale method to investigate tribological properties of the multi-layer molecularly thin-film lubrication, it is found that the systematic static friction coefficient monotonously decreases as the molecular layer thickness in the fluid film increases. In comparison with the mono-layer molecularly thin-film lubrication, the multi-layer molecularly thin-film lubrication plays a role in reducing friction and wear of the system.

Steady thermocapillary migration of a droplet in a uniform temperature gradient combined with a radiation energy source at large Marangoni numbers

The steady thermocapillary droplet migration in a uniform temperature gradient combined with a radiation energy source at large Reynolds and Marangoni numbers is studied. To reach a terminal quasi-steady process, the magnitude of the radiation energy source is required to preserve the conservative integral thermal flux across the surface. Under the quasi-steady state assumption, an analytical result for the steady thermocapillary migration of a droplet at large Reynolds and Marangoni numbers is derived by using the method of matched asymptotic expansions. It is shown that the thermocapillary droplet migration speed increases as Marangoni number increases, while the radiation energy source with the sine square dependence is provided.

Terminal states of thermocapillary migration of a planar droplet at moderate and large Marangoni numbers

In this paper, thermocapillary migration of a planar droplet at moderate and large Marangoni numbers is investigated analytically and numerically. By using the dimension-analysis method, the thermal diffusion time scale is determined as the controlling one of the thermocapillary droplet migration system. During this time, the whole thermocapillary migration process is fully developed. By using the front-tracking method, the steady/unsteady states as the terminal ones at moderate/large Marangoni numbers are captured in a longer time scale than the thermal diffusion time scale. In the terminal states, the instantaneous velocity fields in the unsteady migration process at large Marangoni numbers have the forms of the steady ones at moderate Marangoni numbers. However, in view of the former instantaneous temperature fields, the surface tension of the top surface of the droplet gradually becomes the main component of the driving force on the droplet after the inflection point appears. It is different from that the surface tension of the bottom surface of the droplet is the main component of the driving force on the droplet for the latter ones. The physical mechanism of thermocapillary droplet migration can be described as the significance of the thermal convection around the droplet is higher than/just as the thermal conduction across the droplet at large/moderate Marangoni numbers.

Terminal thermocapillary migration of a droplet at small Reynolds numbers and large Marangoni numbers

In this paper, the overall steady-state momentum and energy balances in the thermocapillary migration of a droplet at small Reynolds numbers and large Marangoni numbers are investigated to confirm the quasi-steady state assumption of the system. The droplet is assumed to have a slight axisymmetric deformation from a sphere shape. It is shown that under the quasi-steady state assumption, the total momentum of the thermocapillary droplet migration system at small Reynolds numbers is conservative. The general solution of the steady momentum equations can be determined with its parameters depending on the temperature fields. However, a nonconservative integral thermal flux across the interface for the steady thermocapillary migration of the droplet at small Reynolds numbers and large Marangoni numbers is identified. The nonconservative integral thermal flux indicates that no solutions of the temperature fields exist for the steady energy equations. The terminal thermocapillary migration of the droplet at small Reynolds numbers and large Marangoni numbers cannot reach a steady state and is thus in an unsteady process.

Multiscale simulation on shearing transitions of thin-film lubrication with multi-layer molecules

Shearing transitions of multi-layer molecularly thin-film lubrication systems in variations of the film-substrate coupling strength and the load are studied by using a multiscale method. Three kinds of the interlayer slips found in decreasing the coupling strength are in qualitative agreement with experimental results. Although tribological behaviors are almost insensitive to the smaller coupling strength, they and the effective film thickness are enlarged more and more as the larger one increases. When the load increases, the tribological behaviors are similar to those in increasing coupling strength, but the effective film thickness is opposite.

Analysis of correlation structures in the Synechocystis PCC6803 genome

Transfer of nucleotide strings in the Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 genome is investigated to exhibit periodic and non-periodic correlation structures by using the recurrence plot method and the phase space reconstruction technique. The periodic correlation structures are generated by periodic transfer of several substrings in long periodic or non-periodic nucleotide strings embedded in the coding regions of genes. The non-periodic correlation structures are generated by non-periodic transfer of several substrings covering or overlapping with the coding regions of genes. In the periodic and non-periodic transfer, some gaps divide the long nucleotide strings into the substrings and prevent their global transfer. Most of the gaps are either the replacement of one base or the insertion/reduction of one base. In the reconstructed phase space, the points generated from two or three steps for the continuous iterative transfer via the second maximal distance can be fitted by two lines. It partly reveals an intrinsic dynamics in the transfer of nucleotide strings. Due to the comparison of the relative positions and lengths, the substrings concerned with the non-periodic correlation structures are almost identical to the mobile elements annotated in the genome. The mobile elements are thus endowed with the basic results on the correlation structures.

Thermocapillary migration of a droplet with a thermal source at large Reynolds and Marangoni numbers

The {\it unsteady} process for thermocapillary droplet migration at large Reynolds and Marangoni numbers has been previously reported by identifying a nonconservative integral thermal flux across the surface in the {\it steady} thermocapillary droplet migration, [Wu and Hu, J. Math. Phys. {\bf 54} 023102, (2013)]. Here we add a thermal source in the droplet to preserve the integral thermal flux across the surface as conservative, so that thermocapillary droplet migration at large Reynolds and Marangoni numbers can reach a {\it quasi-steady} process. Under assumptions of {\it quasi-steady} state and non-deformation of the droplet, we make an analytical result for the {\it steady} thermocapillary migration of droplet with the thermal source at large Reynolds and Marangoni numbers. The result shows that the thermocapillary droplet migration speed slowly increases with the increase of Marangoni number.

Periodic correlation structures in bacterial and archaeal complete genomes

The periodic transference of nucleotide strings in bacterial and archaeal complete genomes is investigated by using the metric representation and the recurrence plot method. The generated periodic correlation structures exhibit four kinds of fundamental transferring characteristics: a single increasing period, several increasing periods, an increasing quasi-period and almost noincreasing period. The mechanism of the periodic transference is further analyzed by determining all long periodic nucleotide strings in the bacterial and archaeal complete genomes and is explained as follows: both the repetition of basic periodic nucleotide strings and the transference of non-periodic nucleotide strings would form the periodic correlation structures with approximately the same increasing periods.

Effects of Marangoni numbers on thermocapillary drop migration: constant for quasi-steady state?

The overall {\it steady}-state energy balance with two phases in a flow domain requires that the change in energy of the domain is equal to the difference between the total energy entering the domain and that leaving the domain. From the condition, the integral thermal flux across the surface is studied for a {\it steady} thermocapillary drop migration in a flow field with uniform temperature gradient at small and large Marangoni (Reynolds) numbers. The drop is assumed to have only a slight axisymmetric deformation from a sphere. It is identified that a conservative/nonconservative integral thermal flux across the surface in the {\it steady} thermocapillary drop migration at small/large Marangoni (Reynolds) numbers. The conservative flux confirms the assumption of {\it quasi-steady} state in the thermocapillary drop migration at small Marangoni (Reynolds) numbers. The nonconservative flux may well result from the invalid assumption of {\it quasi-steady} state, which indicates that the thermocapillary drop migration at large Marangoni (Reynolds) numbers cannot reach {\it steady} state and is thus a {\it unsteady} process.

Generalization of the JTZ model to open plane wakes

The JTZ model [C. Jung, T. Tél and E. Ziemniak, Chaos {\bf 3}, (1993) 555], as a theoretical model of a plane wake behind a circular cylinder in a narrow channel at a moderate Reynolds number, has previously been employed to analyze phenomena of chaotic scattering. It is extended here to describe an open plane wake without the confined narrow channel by incorporating a double row of shedding vortices into the intermediate and far wake. The extended JTZ model is found in qualitative agreement with both direct numerical simulations and experimental results in describing streamlines and vorticity contours. To further validate its applications to particle transport processes, the interaction between small spherical particles and vortices in an extended JTZ model flow is studied. It is shown that the particle size has significant influences on the features of particle trajectories, which have two characteristic patterns: one is rotating around the vortex centers and the other accumulating in the exterior of vortices. Numerical results based on the extended JTZ model are found in qualitative agreement with experimental ones in the normal range of particle sizes.

Thermocapillary migration of a planar droplet at moderate and large Marangoni numbers

Thermocapillary migration of a planar non-deformable droplet in flow fields with two uniform temperature gradients at moderate and large Marangoni numbers is studied numerically by using the front-tracking method. It is observed that the thermocapillary motion of planar droplets in the uniform temperature gradients is steady at moderate Marangoni numbers, but unsteady at large Marangoni numbers. The instantaneous migration velocity at a fixed migration distance decreases with increasing Marangoni numbers. The simulation results of the thermocapillary droplet migration at large Marangoni numbers are found in qualitative agreement with those of experimental investigations. Moreover, the results concerned with steady and unsteady migration processes are further confirmed by comparing the variations of temperature fields inside and outside the droplet. It is evident that at large Marangoni numbers the weak transport of thermal energy from outside of the droplet into inside cannot satisfy the condition of steady migration process, which implies that the advection around the droplet is a more significant mechanism for heat transfer across/around the droplet at large Ma numbers. Furthermore, from the condition of overall steady-state energy balance in the flow domain, the thermal flux across its surface is studied for a steady thermocapillary droplet migration in a flow field with uniform temperature gradient. By using the asymptotic expansion method, a nonconservative integral thermal flux across the surface is identified in the steady thermocapillary droplet migration at large Marangoni numbers. This nonconservative flux may well result from the invalid assumption of quasi-steady state, which indicates that the thermocapillary droplet migration at large Marangoni numbers cannot reach steady state and is thus a unsteady process.

Global transposable characteristics in the complete DNA sequence of the Saccharomyces cevevisiae yeast is determined by using the metric representation and recurrence plot methods. In the form of the correlation distance of nucleotide strings, 16 chromosome sequences of the yeast, which are divided into 5 groups, display 4 kinds of the fundamental transposable characteristics: a short period increasing, a long quasi-period increasing, a long major value and hardly relevant.

Rotation numbers of invariant manifolds around unstable periodic orbits for the diamagnetic Kepler problem

In this paper, a method to construct topological template in terms of symbolic dynamics for the diamagnetic Kepler problem is proposed. To confirm the topological template, rotation numbers of invariant manifolds around unstable periodic orbits in a phase space are taken as an object of comparison. The rotation numbers are determined from the definition and connected with symbolic sequences encoding the periodic orbits in a reduced Poincaré section. Only symbolic codes with inverse ordering in the forward mapping can contribute to the rotation of invariant manifolds around the periodic orbits. By using symbolic ordering, the reduced Poincaré section is constricted along stable manifolds and a topological template, which preserves the ordering of forward sequences and can be used to extract the rotation numbers, is established. The rotation numbers computed from the topological template are the same as those computed from their original definition.

Streamline topology and dilute particle dynamics in a Karman vortex street flow

Three types of streamline topology in a Karman vortex street flow are shown under the variation of spatial parameters. For the motion of dilute particles in the Kármán vortex street flow, there exist a route of bifurcation to a chaotic orbit and more attractors in a bifurcation diagram for the proportion of particle density to fluid density. Along with the increase of spatial parameters in the flow filed, the bifurcation process is suspended, as well as more and more attractors emerge. In the motion of dilute particles, a drag term and gravity term dominate and result in the bifurcation phenomenon.

Self-Similarity Limits of Genomic Signatures

It is shown that metric representation of DNA sequences is one-to-one. By using the metric representation method, suppression of nucleotide strings in the DNA sequences is determined. For a DNA sequence, an optimal string length to display genomic signature in chaos game representation is obtained by eliminating effects of the finite sequence. The optical string length is further shown as a self- similarity limit in computing information dimension. By using the method, self-similarity limits of bacteria complete genomic signatures are further determined.

A method to find unstable periodic orbits for the diamagnetic Kepler Problem

A method to determine the admissibility of symbolic sequences and to find the unstable periodic orbits corresponding to allowed symbolic sequences for the diamagnetic Kepler problem is proposed by using the ordering of stable and unstable manifolds. By investigating the unstable periodic orbits up to length 6, a one to one correspondence between the unstable periodic orbits and their corresponding symbolic sequences is shown under the system symmetry decomposition.

Symbolic Dynamics of the Diamagnetic Kepler Problem Without Involving Bounces

Without involving bounce events, a Poincaré section associated with the axes is found to give a map on the annulus for the diamagnetic Kepler problem. Symbolic dynamics is then established based on the lift of the annulus map. The correspondence between the coding derived from this axis Poincaré section is compared with the coding based on bounces. Symmetry is used to reduce the symbolic dynamics. By means of symbolic dynamics the admissibility of periodic orbits is analyzed, and the symmetry of orbits discussed.

Extension Of Bertrand's Theorem And Factorization Of The Radial Schrödinger Equation

The Bertrand's theorem is extended, i.e. closed orbits still may exist for other central potentials than the power law Coulomb potential and isotropic harmonic oscillator. It is shown that for the combined potential $V(r)=W(r)+b/r^2$ ($W(r)=ar^ν$), when (and only when) $W(r)$ is the Coulomb potential or isotropic harmonic oscillator, closed orbits still exist for suitable angular momentum. The correspondence between the closeness of classical orbits and the existence of raising and lowering operators derived from the factorization of the radial Schrödinger equation is investigated.
