An improved remainder estimate in the Weyl formula for the planar disk

In \cite{colin}, Y. Colin de Verdière proved that the remainder term in the two-term Weyl formula for the eigenvalue counting function for the Dirichlet Laplacian associated with the planar disk is of order $O(λ^{2/3})$. In this paper, by combining with the method of exponential sum estimation, we will give a sharper remainder term estimate $O(λ^{2/3-1/495})$.

Semiclassical states associated to isotropic submanifolds of phase space

We define classes of quantum states associated to isotropic submanifolds of cotangent bundles. The classes are stable under the action of semiclassical pseudo-differential operators and covariant under the action of semiclassical Fourier integral operators. We develop a semiclassical symbol calculus for them; the symbols are symplectic spinors. We outline various applications.

The Generalized Legendre transform and its applications to inverse spectral problems

Let $M$ be a Riemannian manifold, $τ: G \times M \to M$ an isometric action on $M$ of an $n$-torus $G$ and $V: M \to \mathbb R$ a bounded $G$-invariant smooth function. By $G$-invariance the Schrödinger operator, $P=-\hbar^2 Δ_M+V$, restricts to a self-adjoint operator on $L^2(M)_{α/\hbar}$, $α$ being a weight of $G$ and $1/\hbar$ a large positive integer. Let $[c_α, \infty)$ be the asymptotic support of the spectrum of this operator. We will show that $c_α$ extend to a function, $W: \mathfrak g^* \to \mathbb R$ and that, modulo assumptions on $τ$ and $V$ one can recover $V$ from $W$, i.e. prove that $V$ is spectrally determined. The main ingredient in the proof of this result is the existence of a "generalized Legendre transform" mapping the graph of $dW$ onto the graph of $dV$.

Canonical forms for perturbations of the harmonic oscillator

We consider a class of perturbations of the 2D harmonic oscillator, and of some other dynamical systems, which we show are isomorphic to a function of a toric system (a Birkhoff canonical form). We show that for such systems there exists a quantum normal form as well, which is determined by spectral data.

Band invariants for perturbations of the harmonic oscillator

We study the direct and inverse spectral problems for semiclassical operators of the form $S = S_0 +\h^2V$, where $S_0 = \frac 12 \Bigl(-\h^2Δ_{\bbR^n} + |x|^2\Bigr)$ is the harmonic oscillator and $V:\bbR^n\to\bbR$ is a tempered smooth function. We show that the spectrum of $S$ forms eigenvalue clusters as $\h$ tends to zero, and compute the first two associated "band invariants". We derive several inverse spectral results for $V$, under various assumptions. In particular we prove that, in two dimensions, generic analytic potentials that are even with respect to each variable are spectrally determined (up to a rotation).

Semiclassical Spectral Invariants for Schrödinger Operators

In this article we study the semiclassical spectral measures associated with Schrödinger operators on $R^n$. In particular we compute the first few coefficients of the asymptotic expansions of these measures and, as an application, give an alternative proof of Colin de Verdiere's result on recovering one dimensional potential wells from semiclassical spectral data. We also study the relation of semiclassical spectra measures to Birkhoff normal forms and describe a generalization of the asymptotic expansion above to the Schrödinger operator in the presence of a magnetic field.

Stability Functions

In this article we discuss the role of stability functions in geometric invariant theory and apply stability function techniques to problems in toric geometry. In particular we show how one can use these techniques to recover results of Burns-Guillemin-Uribe and Shiffman-Tate-Zelditch on asymptotic properties of sections of holomorphic line bundles over toric varieties.

Differentiability of M-functionals of location and scatter based on t likelihoods

The paper aims at finding widely and smoothly defined nonparametric location and scatter functionals. As a convenient vehicle, maximum likelihood estimation of the location vector m and scatter matrix S of an elliptically symmetric t distribution on d-dimensional space with degrees of freedom larger than 1 extends to an M-functional defined on all probability distributions P in a weakly open, weakly dense domain U. Here U consists of P not putting too much mass in hyperplanes of dimension < d, as shown for empirical measures by Kent and Tyler, Ann. Statist. 1991. It is shown here that (m,S) is analytic on U, for the bounded Lipschitz norm, or for d=1, for the sup norm on distribution functions. For k=1,2,..., and other norms, depending on k and more directly adapted to t functionals, one has continuous differentiability of order k, allowing the delta-method to be applied to (m,S) for any P in U, which can be arbitrarily heavy-tailed. These results imply asymptotic normality of the corresponding M-estimators (m_n,S_n). In dimension d=1 only, the t functionals extend to be defined and weakly continuous at all t.

Geodesics on weighted projective spaces

We study the inverse spectral problem for weighted projective spaces using wave-trace methods. We show that in many cases one can "hear" the weights of a weighted projective space.

Some classes of rational functions and related Banach spaces

For positive integers d, r, and M, we consider the class of rational functions on real d-dimensional space whose denominators are products of at most r functions of the form 1+Q(x) where each Q is a quadratic form with eigenvalues bounded above by M and below by 1/M. Each numerator is a monic monomial of the same degree as the corresponding denominator. Then we form the Banach space of countable linear combinations of such rational functions with absolutely summable coefficients, normed by the infimum of sums of absolute values of the coefficients. We show that for rational functions whose denominators are rth powers of a specific 1+Q, or differences of two such rational functions with the same numerator, the norm is achieved by and only by the obvious combination of one or two functions respectively. We also find bounds for coefficients in partial-fraction decompositions of some specific rational functions, which in some cases are quite sharp.

The twisted Mellin transform

The "twisted Mellin transform" is a slightly modified version of the usual classical Mellin transform on $L^2(\mathbb R)$. In this short note we investigate some of its basic properties. From the point of views of combinatorics one of its most important interesting properties is that it intertwines the differential operator, $df/dx$, with its finite difference analogue, $\nabla f= f(x)-f(x-1)$. From the point of view of analysis one of its most important properties is that it describes the asymptotics of one dimensional quantum states in Bargmann quantization.

The Mellin transform and spectral properties of toric varieties

In this article we apply results of \cite{W} on the twisted Mellin transform to problems in toric geometry. In particular we use these results to describe the asymptotics of probability densities associated with the monomial eigenstates, $z^k$, $k \in \ZZ^d$, in Bargmann space and prove an "upstairs" version of the spectral density theorem of \cite{BGU}. We also obtain for the $z^k$'s, "upstairs" versions of the results of \cite{STZ} on distribution laws for eigenstates on toric varieties.
