Dominance and Transmissions in Supertropical Valuation Theory

This paper is a sequel of [IKR1], where we defined supervaluations on a commutative ring $R$ and studied a dominance relation $ϕ\geq ψ$ between supervaluations $ϕ$ and $ψ$ on $R$, aiming at an enrichment of the algebraic tool box for use in tropical geometry. A supervaluation $ϕ:R \to U$ is a multiplicative map from $R$ to a supertropical semiring $U$, cf. [IR1], [IR2], [IKR1], with further properties, which mean that $ϕ$ is a sort of refinement, or covering, of an m-valuation (= monoid valuation) $v: R \to M$. In the most important case, that $R$ is a ring, m-valuations constitute a mild generalization of valuations in the sense of Bourbaki [B], while $ϕ\geq ψ$ means that $ψ: R \to V$ is a sort of coarsening of the supervaluation $ϕ$. If $ϕ(R)$ generates the semiring $U$, then $ϕ\geq ψ$ iff there exists a "transmission" $α: U \to V$ with $ψ= α\circ ϕ$. Transmissions are multiplicative maps with further properties, cf. [IKR1, Sec. 5]. Every semiring homomorphism $α: U \to V$ is a transmission, but there are others which lack additivity, and this causes a major difficulty. In the main body of the paper we study surjective transmissions via equivalence relations on supertropical semirings, often much more complicated than congruences by ideals in usual commutative algebra.

Supertropical semirings and supervaluations

We interpret a valuation $v$ on a ring $R$ as a map $v: R \to M$ into a so called bipotent semiring $M$ (the usual max-plus setting), and then define a \textbf{supervaluation} $ϕ$ as a suitable map into a supertropical semiring $U$ with ghost ideal $M$ (cf. [IR1], [IR2]) covering $v$ via the ghost map $U \to M$. The set $\Cov(v)$ of all supervaluations covering $v$ has a natural ordering which makes it a complete lattice. In the case that $R$ is a field, hence for $v$ a Krull valuation, we give a complete explicit description of $\Cov(v)$. The theory of supertropical semirings and supervaluations aims for an algebra fitting the needs of tropical geometry better than the usual max-plus setting. We illustrate this by giving a supertropical version of Kapranov's lemma.

A Glimpse at Supertropical Valuation Theory

We give a short tour through major parts of a recent long paper [IKR1] on supertropical valuation theory, leaving aside nearly all proofs (to be found in [IKR1]). In this way we hope to give easy access to ideas of a new branch of so called "supertropical algebra".

Supertropical matrix algebra III: Powers of matrices and generalized eigenspaces

We investigate powers of supertropical matrices, with special attention to the role of the coefficients of the supertropical characteristic polynomial (especially the supertropical trace) in controlling the rank of a power of a matrix. This leads to a Jordan-type decomposition of supertropical matrices, together with a generalized eigenspace decomposition of a power of an arbitrary supertropical matrix.

Supertropical linear algebra

The objective of this paper is to lay out the algebraic theory of supertropical vector spaces and linear algebra, utilizing the key antisymmetric relation of ``ghost surpasses.''Special attention is paid to the various notions of ``base,'' which include d-base and s-base, and these are compared to other treatments in the tropical theory. Whereas the number of elements in a d-base may vary according to the d-base, it is shown that when an s-base exists, it is unique up to permutation and multiplication by scalars, and can be identified with a set of ``critical'' elements. Linear functionals and the dual space are also studied, leading to supertropical bilinear forms and a supertropical version of the Gram matrix, including its connection to linear dependence, as well as a supertropical version of a theorem of Artin.

Representation Theory of Finite Semigroups over Semirings

We develop the representation theory of a finite semigroup over an arbitrary commutative semiring with unit, in particular classifying the irreducible and minimal representations. The results for an arbitrary semiring are as good as the results for a field. Special attention is paid to the boolean semiring, where we also characterize the simple representations and introduce the beginnings of a character theory.

Supertropical algebra

We develop the algebraic polynomial theory for "supertropical algebra," as initiated earlier over the real numbers by the first author. The main innovation there was the introduction of "ghost elements," which also play the key role in our structure theory. Here, we work somewhat more generally over an ordered monoid, and develop a theory which contains the analogs of several basic theorems of classical commutative algebra. This structure enables one to develop a Zariski-type algebraic geometric approach to tropical geometry, viewing tropical varieties as sets of roots of (supertropical) polynomials, leading to an analog of the Hilbert Nullstellensatz. Particular attention is paid to factorization of polynomials. In one indeterminate, any polynomial can be factored into linear and quadratic factors, and unique factorization holds in a certain sense. On the other hand, the failure of unique factorization in several indeterminates is explained by geometric phenomena described in the paper.

Supertropical matrix algebra

The objective of this paper is to develop a general algebraic theory of supertropical matrix algebra, extending [11]. Our main results are as follows: * The tropical determinant (i.e., permanent) is multiplicative when all the determinants involved are tangible. * There exists an adjoint matrix $\adj{A}$ such that the matrix $A \adj{A}$ behaves much like the identity matrix (times $|A|$). * Every matrix $A$ is a supertropical root of its Hamilton-Cayley polynomial $f_A$. If these roots are distinct, then $A$ is conjugate (in a certain supertropical sense) to a diagonal matrix. * The tropical determinant of a matrix $A$ is a ghost iff the rows of $A$ are tropically dependent, iff the columns of $A$ are tropically dependent. * Every root of $f_A$ is a "supertropical" eigenvalue of $A$ (appropriately defined), and has a tangible supertropical eigenvector.

Supertropical Matrix Algebra II: Solving tropical equations

We continue the study of matrices over a supertropical algebra, proving the existence of a tangible adjoint of $A$, which provides the unique right (resp. left) quasi-inverse maximal with respect to the right (resp. left) quasi-identity matrix corresponding to $A$; this provides a unique maximal (tangible) solution to supertropical vector equations, via a version of Cramer's rule. We also describe various properties of this tangible adjoint, and use it to compute supertropical eigenvectors, thereby producing an example in which an $n\times n$ matrix has $n$ distinct supertropical eigenvalues but their supertropical eigenvectors are tropically dependent.

Supertropical Polynomials and Resultants

This paper, a continuation of [3], involves a closer study of polynomials of supertropical semirings and their version of tropical geometry in which we introduce the concept of relatively prime polynomials and resultants, with the aid of some topology. Polynomials in one indeterminant are seen to be relatively prime iff they do not have a common tangible root, iff their resultant is tangible. The Frobenius property yields a morphism of supertropical varieties; this leads to a supertropical version of Bézout's theorem. Also, a supertropical variant of factorization is introduced which yields a more comprehensive version of Hilbert's Nullstellensatz than the one given in [3].

Phantom Probability

Classical probability theory supports probability measures, assigning a fixed positive real value to each event, these measures are far from satisfactory in formulating real-life occurrences. The main innovation of this paper is the introduction of a new probability measure, enabling varying probabilities that are recorded by ring elements to be assigned to events; this measure still provides a Bayesian model, resembling the classical probability model. By introducing two principles for the possible variation of a probability (also known as uncertainty, ambiguity, or imprecise probability), together with the "correct" algebraic structure allowing the framing of these principles, we present the foundations for the theory of phantom probability, generalizing classical probability theory in a natural way. This generalization preserves many of the well-known properties, as well as familiar distribution functions, of classical probability theory: moments, covariance, moment generating functions, the law of large numbers, and the central limit theorem are just a few of the instances demonstrating the concept of phantom probability theory.

Semigroup identities in the monoid of two-by-two tropical matrices

The main result of the paper proves that the monoid of all 2 x 2 tropical matrices satisfies a non-trivial semigroup identity, unlike the case of matrices over infinite fields. We exploit a strong connection between the monoid of all 2 x 2 tropical matrices and the bicyclic monoid to show that a variant of Adian's identity for the bicyclic monoid holds in our case.We use generic matrices of tropical polynomials to prove our result.

Completions, Reversals, and Duality for Tropical Varieties

The algebraic foundation of tropical polynomial algebra provides the framework for the geometric construction of the supplement and the reversal of tropical varieties, thereby inducing a duality of reduced tropical varieties; for classes of tropical hypersurfaces the corresponding point symmetry is obtained for their Newton polytopes and lattice polytopes.

Tropical Arithmetic and Tropical Matrix Algebra

This paper introduces a new structure of commutative semiring, generalizing the tropical semiring, and having an arithmetic that modifies the standard tropical operations, i.e. summation and maximum. Although our framework is combinatorial, notions of regularity and invertibility arise naturally for matrices over this semiring; we show that a tropical matrix is invertible if and only if it is regular.

Tropical Algebraic Sets, Ideals and An Algebraic Nullstellensatz

This paper introduces the foundations of the polynomial algebra and basic structures for algebraic geometry over the extended tropical semiring. Our development, which includes the tropical version for the fundamental theorem of algebra, leads to the reduced polynomial semiring -- a structure that provides a basis for developing a tropical analogue to the classical theory of commutative algebra. The use of the new notion of tropical algebraic com-sets, built upon the complements of tropical algebraic sets, eventually yields the tropical algebraic Nullstellensatz.

The Tropical Rank of a Tropical Matrix

In this paper we further develop the theory of matrices over the extended tropical semiring. Introducing a notion of tropical linear dependence allows for a natural definition of matrix rank in a sense that coincides with the notions of tropical regularity and invertibility.

Duality of Tropical Curves

Duality of curves is one of the important aspects of the ``classical'' algebraic geometry. In this paper, using this foundation, the duality of tropical polynomials is constructed to introduce the duality of Non-Archimedean curves. Using the development of ``mechanism'' which is based on ``distortion'' values and their matrices, we discuss some aspects refereing to quadrics with respect to their dual objects. This topic includes also the induced dual subdivision of Newton Polytope and its compatible properties. Finally, a regularity of tropical curves in the duality sense is generally defined and, studied for families of tropical quadrics.
