Latent Space Representation of Electricity Market Curves: Maintaining Structural Integrity

Efficiently representing supply and demand curves is vital for energy market analysis and downstream modelling; however, dimensionality reduction often produces reconstructions that violate fundamental economic principles such as monotonicity. This paper evaluates the performance of PCA, Kernel PCA, UMAP, and AutoEncoder across 2d and 3d latent spaces. During preprocessing, we transform the original data to achieve a unified structure, mitigate outlier effects, and focus on critical curve segments. To ensure theoretical validity, we integrate Isotonic Regression as an optional post-processing step to enforce monotonic constraints on reconstructed outputs. Results from a three-year hourly MIBEL dataset demonstrate that the non-linear technique UMAP consistently outperforms other methods, securing the top rank across multiple error metrics. Furthermore, Isotonic Regression serves as a crucial corrective layer, significantly reducing error and restoring physical validity for several methods. We argue that UMAP`s local structure preservation, combined with intelligent post-processing, provides a robust foundation for downstream tasks such as forecasting, classification, and clustering.

Effect of diagnostic testing on the isolation rate in a compartmental model with asymptomatic groups

We present two epidemiological models, which extend the classical SEIR model by accounting for the effect of indiscriminate quarantining, isolation of infected individuals based on testing and the presence of asymptomatic individuals. Given a constraint that limits the maximal number of simultaneous active cases, we demonstrate that the isolation rate, which enforces this constraint, decreases with the increasing testing rate. The models predict that massive testing allows to control the infection spread using a much lower isolation rate than in the case of indiscriminate quarantining. We also show that dynamics of infection are more sensitive to the parameters of the asymptomatic groups than the corresponding parameters of the symptomatic groups.

Nonlinearly determined wavefronts of the Nicholson's diffusive equation: when small delays are not harmless

By proving the existence of non-monotone and non-oscillating wavefronts for the Nicholson's blowflies diffusive equation (the NDE), we answer an open question raised in [16]. Surprisingly, these wavefronts can be observed only for sufficiently small delays. Similarly to the pushed fronts, obtained waves are not linearly determined. In contrast, a broader family of eventually monotone wavefronts for the NDE is indeed determined by properties of the spectra of the linearized equations. Our proofs use essentially several specific characteristics of the blowflies birth function (its unimodal form and the negativity of its Schwarz derivative, among others). One of the key auxiliary results of the paper shows that the Mallet-Paret--Cao--Arino theory of super-exponential solutions for scalar equations can be extended for some classes of second order delay differential equations. For the new type of non-monotone waves to the NDE, our numerical simulations also confirm their stability properties established by Mei et al.
