Dual Conformal Symmetry, Integration-by-Parts Reduction, Differential Equations and the Nonplanar Sector

We show that dual conformal symmetry, mainly studied in planar $\mathcal N = 4$ super-Yang-Mills theory, has interesting consequences for Feynman integrals in nonsupersymmetric theories such as QCD, including the nonplanar sector. A simple observation is that dual conformal transformations preserve unitarity cut conditions for any planar integrals, including those without dual conformal symmetry. Such transformations generate differential equations without raised propagator powers, often with the right hand side of the system proportional to the dimensional regularization parameter $ε$. A nontrivial subgroup of dual conformal transformations, which leaves all external momenta invariant, generates integration-by-parts relations without raised propagator powers, reproducing, in a simpler form, previous results from computational algebraic geometry for several examples with up to two loops and five legs. By opening up the two-loop three- and four-point nonplanar diagrams into planar ones, we find a nonplanar analog of dual conformal symmetry. As for the planar case this is used to generate integration-by-parts relations and differential equations. This implies that the symmetry is tied to the analytic properties of the nonplanar sector of the two-loop four-point amplitude of $\mathcal N = 4$ super-Yang-Mills theory.

Gravity Amplitudes as Generalized Double Copies

Whenever the integrand of a gauge-theory loop amplitude can be arranged into a form where the BCJ duality between color and kinematics is manifest, a corresponding gravity integrand can be obtained simply via the double-copy procedure. However, finding such gauge-theory representations can be challenging, especially at high loop orders. Here we show that we can instead start from generic gauge-theory integrands, where the duality is not manifest, and apply a modified double-copy procedure to obtain gravity integrands that include contact terms generated by violations of dual Jacobi identities. We illustrate this with three-, four- and five-loop examples in N=8 supergravity.

Manifesting enhanced cancellations in supergravity: integrands versus integrals

Examples of "enhanced ultraviolet cancellations" with no known standard-symmetry explanation have been found in a variety of supergravity theories. By examining one- and two-loop examples in four- and five-dimensional half-maximal supergravity, we argue that enhanced cancellations in general cannot be exhibited prior to integration. In light of this, we explore reorganizations of integrands into parts that are manifestly finite and parts that have poor power counting but integrate to zero due to integral identities. At two loops we find that in the large loop-momentum limit the required integral identities follow from Lorentz and SL(2) relabeling symmetry. We carry out a nontrivial check at four loops showing that the identities generated in this way are a complete set. We propose that at $L$ loops the combination of Lorentz and SL($L$) symmetry is sufficient for displaying enhanced cancellations when they happen, whenever the theory is known to be ultraviolet finite up to $(L-1)$ loops.

Two-Loop Renormalization of Quantum Gravity Simplified

The coefficient of the dimensionally regularized two-loop R^3 divergence of (nonsupersymmetric) gravity theories has recently been shown to change when non-dynamical three forms are added to the theory, or when a pseudo-scalar is replaced by the anti-symmetric two-form field to which it is dual. This phenomenon involves evanescent operators, whose matrix elements vanish in four dimensions, including the Gauss-Bonnet operator which is also connected to the trace anomaly. On the other hand, these effects appear to have no physical consequences in renormalized scattering processes. In particular, the dependence of the two-loop four-graviton scattering amplitude on the renormalization scale is simple. In this paper, we explain this result for any minimally-coupled massless gravity theory with renormalizable matter interactions by using unitarity cuts in four dimensions and never invoking evanescent operators.

Logarithmic Singularities and Maximally Supersymmetric Amplitudes

The dual formulation of planar N = 4 super-Yang-Mills scattering amplitudes makes manifest that the integrand has only logarithmic singularities and no poles at infinity. Recently, Arkani-Hamed, Bourjaily, Cachazo and Trnka conjectured the same singularity properties hold to all loop orders in the nonplanar sector as well. Here we conjecture that to all loop orders these constraints give us the key analytic information contained in dual conformal symmetry. We also conjecture that to all loop orders, while N = 8 supergravity has poles at infinity, at least at four points it has only logarithmic singularities at finite locations. We provide nontrivial evidence for these conjectures. For the three-loop four-point N = 4 super-Yang-Mills amplitude, we explicitly construct a complete basis of diagram integrands that has only logarithmic singularities and no poles at infinity. We then express the complete amplitude in terms of the basis diagrams, with the coefficients determined by unitarity. We also give examples at three loops showing how to make the logarithmic singularity properties manifest via dlog forms. We give additional evidence at four and five loops supporting the nonplanar logarithmic singularity conjecture. Furthermore, we present a variety of examples illustrating that these constraints are more restrictive than dual conformal symmetry. Our investigations show that the singularity structures of planar and nonplanar amplitudes in N = 4 super-Yang-Mills are strikingly similar. While it is not clear how to extend either dual conformal symmetry or a dual formulation to the nonplanar sector, these results suggest that related concepts might exist and await discovery. Finally, we describe the singularity structure of N = 8 supergravity at three loops and beyond.

Evidence for a Nonplanar Amplituhedron

The scattering amplitudes of planar N = 4 super-Yang-Mills exhibit a number of remarkable analytic structures, including dual conformal symmetry and logarithmic singularities of integrands. The amplituhedron is a geometric construction of the integrand that incorporates these structures. This geometric construction further implies the amplitude is fully specified by constraining it to vanish on spurious residues. By writing the amplitude in a dlog basis, we provide nontrivial evidence that these analytic properties and "zero conditions" carry over into the nonplanar sector. This suggests that the concept of the amplituhedron can be extended to the the nonplanar sector of N = 4 super-Yang-Mills theory.

Double-Copy Constructions and Unitarity Cuts

The duality between color and kinematics enables the construction of multiloop gravity integrands directly from corresponding gauge-theory integrands. This has led to new nontrivial insights into the structure of gravity theories, including the discovery of enhanced ultraviolet cancellations. To continue to gain deeper understandings and probe these new properties, it is crucial to further improve techniques for constructing multiloop gravity integrands. In this paper, we show by example how one can alleviate difficulties encountered at the multiloop level by relaxing the color-kinematics duality conditions to hold manifestly only on unitarity cuts instead of globally on loop integrands. As an example, we use a minimal ansatz to construct an integrand for the two-loop four-point nonsupersymmetric pure Yang-Mills amplitude in $D$ dimensions that is compatible with these relaxed color-kinematics duality constraints. We then immediately obtain a corresponding gravity integrand through the double-copy procedure. Comments on ultraviolet divergences are also included.

Evanescent Effects Can Alter Ultraviolet Divergences in Quantum Gravity without Physical Consequences

Evanescent operators such as the Gauss-Bonnet term have vanishing perturbative matrix elements in exactly D=4 dimensions. Similarly, evanescent fields do not propagate in D=4; a three-form field is in this class, since it is dual to a cosmological-constant contribution. In this Letter, we show that evanescent operators and fields modify the leading ultraviolet divergence in pure gravity. To analyze the divergence, we compute the two-loop identical-helicity four-graviton amplitude and determine the coefficient of the associated (non-evanescent) R^3 counterterm studied long ago by Goroff and Sagnotti. We compare two pairs of theories that are dual in D=4: gravity coupled to nothing or to three-form matter, and gravity coupled to zero-form or to two-form matter. Duff and van Nieuwenhuizen showed that, curiously, the one-loop conformal anomaly --- the coefficient of the Gauss-Bonnet operator --- changes under p-form duality transformations. We concur, and also find that the leading R^3 divergence changes under duality transformations. Nevertheless, in both cases the physical renormalized two-loop identical-helicity four-graviton amplitude can be chosen to respect duality. In particular, its renormalization-scale dependence is unaltered.

Color-Kinematics Duality for Pure Yang-Mills and Gravity at One and Two Loops

We provide evidence in favor of the conjectured duality between color and kinematics for the case of nonsupersymmetric pure Yang-Mills amplitudes by constructing a form of the one-loop four-point amplitude of this theory that makes the duality manifest. Our construction is valid in any dimension. We also describe a duality-satisfying representation for the two-loop four-point amplitude with identical four-dimensional external helicities. We use these results to obtain corresponding gravity integrands for a theory containing a graviton, dilaton, and antisymmetric tensor, simply by replacing color factors with specified diagram numerators. Using this, we give explicit forms of ultraviolet divergences at one loop in four, six, and eight dimensions, and at two loops in four dimensions.

The Ultraviolet Critical Dimension of Half-Maximal Supergravity at Three Loops

We determine the minimum dimension at which divergences first occur in half-maximal 16-supercharge supergravity at three loops. For the four-point amplitudes, we find that the critical dimension is D=14/3 and give the explicit form of the divergence. We also give the divergence of an additional piece that gives us access to theories with higher degrees of supersymmetry, in particular 20- and 32-supercharge supergravities. We give the divergences of half-maximal supergravity when matter vector multiplets are included as well. Explicit forms of various divergences at one and two loops are also given.

Low-Energy Behavior of Gluons and Gravitons from Gauge Invariance

We show that at tree level, on-shell gauge invariance can be used to fully determine the first subleading soft-gluon behavior and the first two subleading soft-graviton behaviors. Our proofs of the behaviors for n-gluon and n-graviton tree amplitudes are valid in D dimensions and are similar to Low's proof of universality of the first subleading behavior of photons. In contrast to photons coupling to massive particles, in four dimensions the soft behaviors of gluons and gravitons are corrected by loop effects. We comment on how such corrections arise from this perspective. We also show that loop corrections in graviton amplitudes arising from scalar loops appear only at the second soft subleading order. This case is particularly transparent because it is not entangled with graviton infrared singularities. Our result suggests that if we set aside the issue of infrared singularities, soft-graviton Ward identities of extended BMS symmetry are not anomalous through the first subleading order.

Enhanced Ultraviolet Cancellations in N = 5 Supergravity at Four Loop

We show that the four-loop four-point amplitudes of N = 5 supergravity are ultraviolet finite in four dimensions, contrary to expectations based on supersymmetry and duality-symmetry arguments. We explain why the diagrams of any covariant local formalism cannot manifestly exhibit the necessary cancellations for finiteness but instead require a new type of nontrivial ultraviolet cancellation that we call "enhanced cancellations". We also show that the three-loop four-point amplitudes in N = 4 and N = 5 supergravity theories display enhanced cancellations. To construct the loop integrand, we use the duality between color and kinematics. We apply standard methods for extracting ultraviolet divergences in conjunction with the FIRE5 integral reduction program to arrive at the four-loop results.

In this contribution, we present an intermediate storage format for next-to-leading order (NLO) events and explain the advantages of presenting a NLO calculation in this format. We also present some recent applications, including the calculation of PDF uncertainties and the combination of different multiplicity samples for the prediction of gap fractions in inclusive dijet events.

On Loop Corrections to Subleading Soft Behavior of Gluons and Gravitons

Cachazo and Strominger recently proposed an extension of the soft-graviton theorem found by Weinberg. In addition, they proved the validity of their extension at tree level. This was motivated by a Virasoro symmetry of the gravity S-matrix related to BMS symmetry. As shown long ago by Weinberg, the leading behavior is not corrected by loops. In contrast, we show that with the standard definition of soft limits in dimensional regularization, the subleading behavior is anomalous and modified by loop effects. We argue that there are no new types of corrections to the first subleading behavior beyond one loop and to the second subleading behavior beyond two loops. To facilitate our investigation, we introduce a new momentum-conservation prescription for defining the subleading terms of the soft limit. We discuss the loop-level subleading soft behavior of gauge-theory amplitudes before turning to gravity amplitudes.

The Ultraviolet Properties of N=4 Supergravity at Four Loops

We demonstrate that pure N=4 supergravity is ultraviolet divergent at four loops. The form of the divergence suggests that it is due to the rigid U(1) duality-symmetry anomaly of the theory. This is the first known example of an ultraviolet divergence in a pure ungauged supergravity theory in four dimensions. We use the duality between color and kinematics to construct the integrand of the four-loop four-point amplitude, whose ultraviolet divergence is then extracted by standard integration techniques.

The Ultraviolet Structure of Half-Maximal Supergravity with Matter Multiplets at Two and Three Loops

Using the duality between color and kinematics, we construct the two- and three-loop amplitudes of half-maximal supergravity with matter multiplets and show that new divergences occur in D=4 and D=5. Bossard, Howe and Stelle have recently conjectured the existence of 16-supercharge off-shell harmonic superspaces in order to explain the ultraviolet finiteness of pure half-maximal supergravity with no matter multiplets in D=4 at three loops and in D=5 at two loops. By assuming the required superspace exists in D=5, they argued that no new divergences should occur at two loops even with the addition of abelian-vector matter multiplets. Up to possible issues with the SL(2,R) global anomaly of the theory, they reached a similar conclusion in D=4 for two and three loops. The divergences we find contradict these predictions based on the existence of the desired off-shell superspaces. Furthermore, our D=4 results are incompatible with the new divergences being due to the anomaly. We find that the two-loop divergences of half-maximal supergravity are directly controlled by the divergences appearing in ordinary nonsupersymmetric Yang-Mills theory coupled to scalars, explaining why half-maximal supergravity develops new divergences when matter multiplets are added. We also provide a list of one- and two-loop counterterms that should be helpful for constraining any future potential explanations of the observed vanishings of divergences in pure half-maximal supergravity.

Ultraviolet Cancellations in Half-Maximal Supergravity as a Consequence of the Double-Copy Structure

We show that the double-copy structure of gravity forbids divergences in pure half-maximal (16 supercharge) supergravity at four and five points at one loop in D<8 and at two loops in D<6. We link the cancellations that render these supergravity amplitudes finite to corresponding ones that eliminate forbidden color factors from the divergences of pure nonsupersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The vanishing of the two-loop four-point divergence in D=5 half-maximal supergravity is an example where a valid counterterm satisfying the known symmetries exists, yet is not present. We also give explicit forms of divergences in half-maximal supergravity at one loop in D=8 and at two loops in D=6.
