On Non-Canonical Kinetic Terms and the Tilt of the Power Spectrum

We argue that in models of inflation with two scalar fields and non-canonical kinetic terms there is a possibility of obtaining a red tilt of the power spectrum of curvature perturbations from noncanonicality-induced interactions between the curvature and isocurvature perturbations. We describe an extremely simple model realizing this idea, study numerically its predictions for the perturbations and discuss applications in realistic scenarios of inflation. We discuss to what extent in this model the scale of the inflationary potential can be decoupled from the amplitude of the density fluctuations.

Beyond MFV in family symmetry theories of fermion masses

Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV) postulates that the only source of flavour changing neutral currents and CP violation, as in the Standard Model, is the CKM matrix. However it does not address the origin of fermion masses and mixing and models that do usually have a structure that goes well beyond the MFV framework. In this paper we compare the MFV predictions with those obtained in models based on spontaneously broken (horizontal) family symmetries, both Abelian and non-Abelian. The generic suppression of flavour changing processes in these models turns out to be weaker than in the MFV hypothesis. Despite this, in the supersymmetric case, the suppression may still be consistent with a solution to the hierarchy problem, with masses of superpartners below 1 TeV. A comparison of FCNC and CP violation in processes involving a variety of different family quantum numbers should be able to distinguish between various family symmetry models and models satisfying the MFV hypothesis.

On Gauge Mediation and Cosmological Vacuum Selection

Gauge mediation of supersymmetry breakdown has many attractive features and can be realized in phenomenologically interesting string-motivated models. We point out that in models with the Polonyi-like field stabilized at a low expectation value by quantum corrections, gravity seems to limit from above the admixture of gravity mediation to the dominant gauge mediation channel. However, we also point out that in a class of such models the low energy metastable supersymmetry breaking vaccum appears to be cosmologically disfavoured. These features should hold also in the case of typical stabilized models with anomalous U(1) groups.

Gravity in Gauge Mediation

We investigate O'Raifeartaigh-type models for F-term supersymmetry breaking in gauge mediation scenarios in the presence of gravity. It is pointed out that the vacuum structure of those models is such that in metastable vacua gravity mediation contribution to scalar masses is always suppressed to the level below 1 percent, almost sufficient for avoiding FCNC problem. Close to that limit, gravitino mass can be in the range 10-100 GeV, opening several interesting possibilities for gauge mediation models, including Giudice-Masiero mechanism for mu and Bmu generation. Gravity sector can include stabilized moduli.

Loop Quantum Cosmology corrections to inflationary models

In the recent years the quantization methods of Loop Quantum Gravity have been successfully applied to the homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space-times. The resulting theory, called Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC), resolves the Big Bang singularity by replacing it with the Big Bounce. We argue that LQC generates also certain corrections to field theoretical inflationary scenarios. These corrections imply that in the LQC the effective sonic horizon becomes infinite at some point after the bounce and that the scale of the inflationary potential implied by the COBE normalisation increases. The evolution of scalar fields immediately after the Bounce becomes modified in an interesting way. We point out that one can use COBE normalisation to establish an upper bound on the quantum of length of LQG.

Moduli and multi-field inflation

Moduli with flat or run-away classical potentials are generic in theories based on supersymmetry and extra dimensions. They mix between themselves and with matter fields in kinetic terms and in the nonperturbative superpotentials. As the result, interesting structure appears in the scalar potential which helps to stabilise and trap moduli and leads to multi-field inflation. The new and attractive feature of multi-inflationary setup are isocurvature perturbations which can modify in an interesting way the final spectrum of primordial fluctuations resulting from inflation.

Racetrack inflation and assisted moduli stabilisation

We present a model of inflation based on a racetrack model without flux stabilization. The initial conditions are set automatically through topological inflation. This ensures that the dilaton is not swept to weak coupling through either thermal effects or fast roll. Including the effect of non-dilaton fields we find that moduli provide natural candidates for the inflaton. The resulting potential generates slow-roll inflation without the need to fine tune parameters. The energy scale of inflation must be near the GUT scale and the scalar density perturbation generated has a spectrum consistent with WMAP data.

Electroweak symmetry breaking and radion stabilization in universal extra dimensions

We discuss the stabilization of the scalar sector, including the radion, in the gauge model with one universal extra dimension, within Higgs and Higgsless scenarios. The stabilization occurs at the one-loop level, through the fermionic contribution to the effective potential; in the Higgs case, for stabilization to take place the bosonic contribution must be balanced by the fermionic one, hence the scales of these two cannot differ too much. However, there is no need for (softly broken) supersymmetry to achieve the stabilization - it can be arranged for a reasonably wide range of couplings and mass scales. The primary instability in the model is the run-away of the radion vacuum expectation value. It turns out that the requirement of the radion stability, in the Higgs case, favours a Higgs boson mass below 0.26 TeV, which is consistent with the Standard Model upper bound that follows from the electroweak precision measurements. The typical radion mass is of the order of 10^{-6} eV. The radion mass can be made larger by rising the scale of fermion masses, as clearly seen in the Higgsless case. The cosmological constant may be cancelled by suitable counterterms, in such a way that the stabilization is not affected.

Singular gauge transformations and supersymmetry breakdown on warped orbifolds

We have analyzed the breakdown of global supersymmetry by a non-vanishing expectation value of the fifth component of the graviphoton on warped S^1/Z_2 orbifolds. It has been demonstrated that the setups where such a breakdown is possible correspond to the models where the true gauge symmetry on the orbifold, respecting the Z_2-parities and periodicity, is broken by boundary terms. In the tuned models, giving Randall-Sundrum warp factor, gauge symmetry stays intact, and any can be gauged away without violating supersymmetry.

Twisted supergravity and untwisted super-bigravity

We have extended previous analysis of the bulk/brane supersymmetrizations involving non-zero brane mass terms of bulk fermions (gravitini) and twisting of boundary conditions. We have constructed new brane/bulk models that may be relevant for realistic model building. In particular, we have built a model with the Randall-Sundrum bosonic sector, orthogonal projection operators on the branes in the fermionic sector, and an unbroken N=1 supersymmetry. We have also constructed 5d super-bigravity with static vacuum and unbroken N=1 supersymmetry, which may be viewed as a deconstruction of 5d supergravity.

Warped super-bigravity

Warped supergravities with lower-dimensional branes provide consistent field-theoretic framework for discussion of important aspects of modern string theory physics. In particular, it is possible to study reliably supersymmetry breakdown and its transmission between branes. In this talk we present two versions of locally supersymmetrized bigravity - one with unbroken N=1,d=4 supersymmetry, and the second one with all supersymmetries broken by boundary conditions.

Cosmological constant and kinetic supersymmetry breakdown on a moving brane

We consider cosmological solutions in 5d locally supersymmetric theories including boundary actions, with either opposite tension branes for identical brane chiralities or equal tension branes for flipped brane chiralities. We analyse the occurrence of supersymmetry breakdown in both situations. We find that supersymmetry as seen by a brane observer is broken due to the motion of the brane in the bulk. When the brane energy-momentum tensor is dominated by the brane tension, the 4d vacuum energy cosmological constant on the observable brane is positive and proportional to the inverse square of the brane local time. We find that the mass splitting within supersymmetric multiplets living on the brane is of the order of the inverse of the brane local time, examplifying the tight relation between the vacuum energy scale and the supersymmetry breaking scale.

On Scherk-Schwarz mechanism in gauged five-dimensional supergravity and on its relation to bigravity

We demonstrate the relation between the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism and flipped gauged brane-bulk supergravities in five dimensions. We discuss the form of supersymmetry violating Scherk-Schwarz terms in pure supergravity and in supergravity coupled to matter. We point out that brane-induced supersymmetry breakdown in 5d Horava-Witten model is not of the Scherk-Schwarz type. We discuss in detail flipped super-bigravity, which is the locally supersymmetric extension of the (++) bigravity.

Warped brane world supergravity, flipping, and the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism

We demonstrate the relation between the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism and flipped gauged brane-bulk supergravities in five dimensions. We discuss the form of supersymmetry violating Scherk-Schwarz terms in pure supergravity and in supergravity coupled to matter. Although the Lagrangian mass terms that arise as the result of the Scherk-Schwarz redefinition of fields are naturally of the order of the inverse radius of the orbifold, the effective 4d physical mass terms are rather set by the scale \sqrt{|\barΛ|}, where \barΛ is the 4d cosmlogical constant.

Racetrack models in theories from extra dimensions

We have investigated moduli stabilization leading to hierarchical supersymmetry breakdown in racetrack models with two moduli fields simultaneously present in the effective racetrack superpotential. We have shown that stabilization of moduli occurs when a shift symmetry of the moduli space becomes gauged. This gauging results in a D-term contribution to the scalar potential that depends on moduli scalars. To break supersymmetry at a minimum created this way in the case where only a single combination of moduli is present in the superpotential one needs supergravity corrections. If the superpotential depends on two independent combinations of moduli, supersymmetry is broken by non-vanishing F-terms without supergravity terms. Some of the minima that we see correspond to a non-vanishing expectation value of the blowing-up modulus in the case of type IIB orientifold models. We point out that the mass of the gauge boson associated with gauged shift symmetry becomes naturally light in warped compactifications.

Brane world supersymmetry, detuning, flipping and orbifolding

We emphasize the necessity of a delicate interplay between the gauge and gravitational sectors of five-dimensional brane worlds in creating phenomenologically relevant vacua. We discuss locally supersymmetric brane worlds with unflipped and flipped fermionic boundary conditions and with matter on the branes. We point out that a natural separation between the gauge and gravity sectors, very difficult in models with true extra dimensions, may be achieved in 4d models with deconstructed dimensions.

Custodial supersymmetry in non-supersymmetric quiver theories

We consider non-supersymmetric quiver theories obtained by orbifolding the N=4 supersymmetric U(K) gauge theory by a discrete Z_Γgroup embedded in the SU(4) R-symmetry group. We explicitly find that in such theories there are no one-loop quadratic divergences in the effective potential. Moreover, when the gauge group U(n)^Γof the quiver theory is spontaneously broken down to the diagonal U(n), we identify a custodial supersymmetry which is responsible for the fermion-boson degeneracy of the mass spectrum.

Boundary Terms in Brane Worlds

We clarify the relation between orbifold and interval pictures in 5d brane worlds. We establish this correspondence for Z_2-even and Z_2-odd orbifold fields. In the interval picture Gibbons-Hawking terms are necessary to fulfill consistency conditions. We show how the brane world consistency conditions arise in the interval picture. We apply the procedure to the situation where the transverse dimension is terminated by naked singularities. In particular, we find the boundary terms needed when the naive vacuum action is infinite.
