Lattice location of ion-implanted 6He in diamond

The properties of He in diamond are of interest with respect to geological dating and the creation of color centers with possible quantum applications. We report on the lattice location of the short-lived ion implanted nuclear probe 6He (t1/2=807 ms) in diamond, which was performed using the beta emission channeling method at CERN's ISOLDE facility. 6He was implanted with 30 keV into a single-crystalline artificial diamond sample kept at a temperature ranging from 30 deg C up to 800 deg C. By means of comparing the measured emission channeling patterns along different crystallographic directions with simulated yields for a variety of possible sites, we conclude that the implanted 6He occupies tetrahedral (T) interstitial sites, in agreement with theoretical predictions that T sites should be the preferred position of He in diamond. Implantation at 800 deg C resulted in a drop in the tetrahedral interstitial fraction by 20%, which we interpret as the onset of diffusion, 6He thus being able to change to lattice sites of low crystallographic symmetry, or reach the surface of the sample or escape to the bulk during its lifetime. We estimate the activation energy for interstitial migration of He to be around 1.63-2.89 eV, which agrees with theoretical predictions of 1.41-2.36 eV from the literature. Activation energies around 2 eV would mean that simple interstitial He cannot be stable in diamond on geological time scales, thus to remain inside, it should be bound to some defect in the material or exist in another form such as within inclusions of other minerals or liquids, or possibly small He bubbles.

Radiotracer photoluminescence for element-specific identification of color centers

We report on the implementation of a radiotracer photoluminescence spectroscopy setup at the ISOLDE radioactive ion beam facility at CERN, enabling element-specific identification of optically active defects in solids. The method combines radioactive ion implantation with optical spectroscopy, allowing the temporal evolution of photoluminescence signals to be correlated directly with nuclear decay. The setup is currently optimized for color centers in diamond and related wide-bandgap materials and enables room-temperature measurements. The system consists of an optical microscope coupled to a fiber-fed Czerny-Turner spectrometer with a liquid-nitrogen-cooled CCD detector, providing the stability required for long-duration measurements. As a proof-of-principle, radioactive $^{75}$Ga was implanted into diamond as a precursor to produce $^{75}$Ge impurities. The photoluminescence band extending from 600 nm, corresponding to the well-known GeV$^{-}$ center, exhibits an exponential decay with a half-life of $82.3^{+2.5}_{-2.3} \mathrm{min}$, in agreement with the known $β^{-}$ decay half-life of $^{75}$Ge of $82.78(4) \mathrm{min}$. This establishes a direct and unambiguous correlation between the observed spectral feature and its germanium origin. These results demonstrate the capability of the setup to perform element-specific optical spectroscopy and extend radiotracer methods to color centers in wide-bandgap materials, taking advantage of the uniquely broad range of radioactive isotopes available at ISOLDE.

Radiative lifetime of the A 2Π1/2 state in RaF with relevance to laser cooling

The radiative lifetime of the $A$ $^2 Π_{1/2}$ (v=0) state in radium monofluoride (RaF) is measured to be 35(1) ns. The lifetime of this state and the related decay rate $Γ= 2.86(8) \times 10^7$ $s^{-1}$ are of relevance to the laser cooling of RaF via the optically closed $A$ $^2 Π_{1/2} \leftarrow X$ $^2Σ_{1/2}$ transition, which makes the molecule a promising probe to search for new physics. RaF is found to have a comparable photon-scattering rate to homoelectronic laser-coolable molecules. Thanks to its highly diagonal Franck-Condon matrix, it is expected to scatter an order of magnitude more photons than other molecules when using just 3 cooling lasers, before it decays to a dark state. The lifetime measurement in RaF is benchmarked by measuring the lifetime of the $8P_{3/2}$ state in Fr to be 83(3) ns, in agreement with literature.

Percolative phase transition on ferromagnetic insulator manganites: uncorrelated to correlated polaron clusters

In this work, we report an atomic scale study on the ferromagnetic insulator manganite LaMnO$_{3.12}$ using $γ-γ$ PAC spectroscopy. Data analysis reveals a nanoscopic transition from an undistorted to a Jahn-Teller-distorted local environment upon cooling. The percolation thresholds of the two local environments enclose a macroscopic structural transition (Rhombohedric-Orthorhombic). Two distinct regimes of JT-distortions were found: a high temperature regime where uncorrelated polaron clusters with severe distortions of the Mn$^{3+}$O$_{6}$ octahedra survive up to $T \approx 800 K$ and a low temperature regime where correlated regions have a weaker JT-distorted symmetry.

A New Measurement of the Proton Capture Rate on 7Be and the S17(0) Factor

The 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction plays a central role in the evaluation of solar neutrino fluxes. We report on a new precision measurement of the cross section of this reaction, following our previous experiment with an implanted target, a raster scanned beam and the elimination of backscattering losses. The new measurement incorporates a higher activity 7Be target and a number of improvements in design and procedure. The cross section at Ec.m. = 850 keV was measured several times under varying expermental conditions, yielding a value of S17(Ec.m.=850 keV) = 24.0 +/- 0.5 eV b. Measurements were carried out at lower energies as well. We obtain from the entire set of measurements an extrapolated value of S17(0) = 21.2 +/- 0.7 eV b.

First decay study of the very neutron-rich isotope Br-93

The decay of the mass-separated, very neutron-rich isotope Br-93 has been studied by gamma-spectroscopy. A level scheme of its daughter Kr-93 has been constructed. Level energies, gamma-ray branching ratios and multipolarities suggest spins and parities which are in accord with a smooth systematics of the N=57 isotones for Z less-equal 40, suggesting the N=56 shell closure still to be effective in Kr isotopes. So far, there is no indication of a progressive onset of deformation in neutron-rich Kr isotopes.

Positron-neutrino correlation in the 0^+ \to 0^+ decay of ^{32}Ar

The positron-neutrino correlation in the $0^+ \to 0^+ β$ decay of $^{32}$Ar was measured at ISOLDE by analyzing the effect of lepton recoil on the shape of the narrow proton group following the superallowed decay. Our result is consistent with the Standard Model prediction. For vanishing Fierz interference we find $a=0.9989 \pm 0.0052 \pm 0.0036$, which yields improved constraints on scalar weak interactions.

Decay of neutron-rich Mn nuclides and deformation of heavy Fe isotopes

The use of chemically selective laser ionization combined with beta-delayed neutron counting at CERN/ISOLDE has permitted identification and half-life measurements for 623-ms Mn-61 up through 14-ms Mn-69. The measured half-lives are found to be significantly longer near N=40 than the values calculated with a QRPA shell model using ground-state deformations from the FRDM and ETFSI models. Gamma-ray singles and coincidence spectroscopy has been performed for Mn-64 and Mn-66 decays to levels of Fe-64 and Fe-66, revealing a significant drop in the energy of the first 2+ state in these nuclides that suggests an unanticipated increase in collectivity near N=40.
