Neural network predictions of plasma confinement loss in Wendelstein 7-X pellet-fueled discharges

The energy confinement time is a key parameter of a magnetized fusion plasma, helping to determine whether ignition can occur. Experiments in tokamaks and stellarators have shown that the confinement time can be improved via pellet injection. The state of enhanced confinement brought about by a given pellet typically deteriorates over time unless and until a subsequent pellet is injected. In this work, we develop a data-driven model that predicts, at any moment, the remaining time before a plasma in Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) will lose its enhanced confinement state. This "remaining time" metric effectively sets a deadline for when the next pellet must be injected in order to steadily maintain a high confinement time. We describe the development and training of the model and compare its predictions to observations from previous experiments. At least 90% of the model predictions are accurate to within 51 ms, which is below the typical W7-X energy confinement time as well as the minimum time separation between subsequent pellet injections. The model can be evaluated rapidly and could be suitable for use in a control system that optimizes the pellet injection rate in real time.

Microtearing Turbulence and Its Role in High-Density-Gradient Plasmas in Wendelstein 7-X

Gyrokinetic simulations reveal that microtearing mode (MTM) turbulence dominates transport in a Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) discharge characterized by large density gradients, moderate temperature gradients, and low plasma beta. This conclusion is supported by the close agreement between simulated and experimentally measured heat and particle fluxes. The emergence of MTMs is attributed to the absence of competing instabilities -- such as ion temperature gradient modes and density-gradient-driven trapped-electron modes -- under these plasma conditions, together with the stabilizing influence of the W7-X max-J magnetic configuration. Furthermore, moderate collisionality and low magnetic shear are found to facilitate MTM onset. These findings advance the understanding of high-density-gradient regimes, which are essential for achieving high-performance operation in W7-X plasmas.

Impact of spatially varying transport coefficients in EMC3-Eirene simulations of W7-X and assessment of drifts

Modelling the scrape-off layer of a stellarator is challenging due to the complex magnetic 3D geometry. The here presented study analyses simulations of the scrape-off layer (SOL) of the stellarator Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) using spatially varying diffusion coefficients for the magnetic standard configuration, extending our previous study. Comparing the EMC3-Eirene simulations with experimental observations, an inconsistency between the strike-line width (SLW) and the upstream parameters was observed. While to match the experimental SLW a particle diffusion coefficient $D \approx 0.2$ is needed, $D \approx 1$ is needed to get experimental separatrix temperatures of 50\,eV at the given experimental heating power. We asses the impact of physically motivated spatially varying transport coeffients. Agreement with experimental data can be improved, but various differences remain. We show that drifts are expected to help overcome the discrepancies and, thus, the development of SOL transport models including drifts is a necessary next step to study the SOL transport of the W7-X stellarator.

Accelerated Bayesian inference of plasma profiles with self-consistent MHD equilibria at W7-X via neural networks

High-$\langle β\rangle$ operations require a fast and robust inference of plasma parameters with a self-consistent MHD equilibrium. Precalculated MHD equilibria are usually employed at W7-X due to the high computational cost. To address this, we couple a physics-regularized NN model that approximates the ideal-MHD equilibrium with the Bayesian modeling framework Minerva. We show the fast and robust inference of plasma profiles (electron temperature and density) with a self-consistent MHD equilibrium approximated by the NN model. We investigate the robustness of the inference across diverse synthetic W7-X plasma scenarios. The inferred plasma parameters and their uncertainties are compatible with the parameters inferred using the VMEC, and the inference time is reduced by more than two orders of magnitude. This work suggests that MHD self-consistent inferences of plasma parameters can be performed between shots.

Physics-regularized neural network of the ideal-MHD solution operator in Wendelstein 7-X configurations

The computational cost of constructing 3D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibria is one of the limiting factors in stellarator research and design. Although data-driven approaches have been proposed to provide fast 3D MHD equilibria, the accuracy with which equilibrium properties are reconstructed is unknown. In this work, we describe an artificial neural network (NN) that quickly approximates the ideal-MHD solution operator in Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) configurations. This model fulfils equilibrium symmetries by construction. The MHD force residual regularizes the solution of the NN to satisfy the ideal-MHD equations. The model predicts the equilibrium solution with high accuracy, and it faithfully reconstructs global equilibrium quantities and proxy functions used in stellarator optimization. We also optimize W7-X magnetic configurations, where desiderable configurations can be found in terms of fast particle confinement. This work demonstrates with which accuracy NN models can approximate the 3D ideal-MHD solution operator and reconstruct equilibrium properties of interest, and it suggests how they might be used to optimize stellarator magnetic configurations.

Parametrisation of target heat flux distribution and study of transport parameters for boundary modelling in W7-X

Modelling the scrape-off layer of a stellarator is challenging due to the complex magnetic 3D geometry. The here presented study analyses simulations of the scrape-off layer (SOL) of the stellarator Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) using the EMC3-EIRENE code for the magnetic standard configuration. Comparing with experimental observations, the transport model is validated. Based on the experimentally observed strike line width, the anomalous transport coefficients, used as input to the code are determined to around $0.2\,$m$^2/$s. This is however in disagreement with upstream measurements, where such small cross-field transport leads to temperatures higher than measured experimentally.

A model for the fast evaluation of prompt losses of energetic ions in stellarators

A good understanding of the confinement of energetic ions in non-axisymmetric magnetic fields is key for the design of reactors based on the stellarator concept. In this work, we develop a model that, based on the radially-local bounce-averaged drift-kinetic equation, classifies orbits and succeeds in predicting configuration-dependent aspects of the prompt losses of energetic ions in stellarators. Such a model could in turn be employed in the optimization stage of the design of new devices.

Fast simulations for large aspect ratio stellarators with the neoclassical code KNOSOS

In this work, a new version of KNOSOS is presented. KNOSOS is a low-collisionality radially-local, bounce-averaged neoclassical code that is extremely fast, and at the same time, includes physical effects often neglected by more standard codes: the component of the magnetic drift that is tangent to the flux-surface and the variation of the electrostatic potential on the flux-surface. An earlier version of the code could only describe configurations that were sufficiently optimized with respect to neoclassical transport. KNOSOS can now be applied to any large aspect ratio stellarator, and its performance is demonstrated by means of detailed simulations in the configuration space of Wendelstein 7-X.

ASCOT simulations of 14 MeV neutron rates in W7-X: effect of magnetic configuration

Neutron production rates in fusion devices are determined not only by the kinetic profiles but also the fast ion slowing-down distributions. In this work, we investigate the effect of magnetic configuration on neutron production rates in future deuterium plasmas in the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator. The neutral beam injection, beam and triton slowing-down distributions, and the fusion reactivity are simulated with the ASCOT suite of codes. The results indicate that the magnetic configuration has only a small effect on the production of 2.45 MeV neutrons from thermonuclear and beam-target fusion. The 14.1 MeV neutron production rates were found to be between $1.49 \times 10^{12}$ $\mathrm{s}^{-1}$ and $1.67 \times 10^{12}$ $\mathrm{s}^{-1}$, which is estimated to be sufficient for a time-resolved detection using a scintillating fiber detector, although only in high-performance discharges.

Nonlinear gyrokinetic PIC simulations in stellarators with the code EUTERPE

In this work, the first nonlinear particle-in-cell simulations carried out in a stellarator with the global gyrokinetic code EUTERPE using realistic plasma parameters are reported. Several studies are conducted with the aim of enabling reliable nonlinear simulations in stellarators with this code. First, EUTERPE is benchmarked against ORB5 in both linear and nonlinear settings in a tokamak configuration. Next, the use of noise control and stabilization tools, a Krook-type collision operator, markers weight smoothing and heating sources is investigated. It is studied in detail how these tools influence the linear growth rate of instabilities in both tokamak and stellarator geometries and their influence on the linear zonal flow evolution in a stellarator. Then, it is studied how these tools allow improving the quality of the results in a set of nonlinear simulations of electrostatic turbulence in a stellarator configuration. Finally, these tools are applied to a W7-X magnetic configuration using experimental plasma parameters.

Compensation of phase drifts caused by ambient humidity, temperature and pressure changes for continuously operating interferometers

Fusion experiments rely heavily on the measurement of the line-integrated electron density by interferometry for density feed-back control. In recent years the discharge length has increased dramatically and is continuing to rise, resulting in environmentally induced phase drifts to become an increasingly worrisome subject, since they falsify the interferometer's measurement of the density. Especially in larger Tokamaks the loss of density control due to uncontrolled changes in the optical path length can have a disastrous outcome. The control of environmental parameters in large diagnostic/experimental halls is costly and sometimes infeasible and in some cases cannot be retro-fitted to an existing machine. In this report we present a very cheap (ca. 100 EUR), easily retro-fitted, real-time capable phase compensation scheme for interferometers measuring dispersive media over long time scales. The method is not limited to fusion, but can be applied to any continuously measuring interferometer measuring a dispersive medium. It has been successfully applied to the Wendelstein 7-X density feed-back interferometer.
