Ultra-sensitive graphene membranes for microphone applications

Microphones exploit the motion of suspended membranes to detect sound waves. Since the microphone performance can be improved by reducing the thickness and mass of its sensing membrane, graphene-based microphones are expected to outperform state-of-the-art microelectromechanical (MEMS) microphones and allow further miniaturization of the device. Here, we present a laser vibrometry study of the acoustic response of suspended multilayer graphene membranes for microphone applications. We address performance parameters relevant for acoustic sensing, including mechanical sensitivity, limit of detection and nonlinear distortion, and discuss the trade-offs and limitations in the design of graphene microphones. We demonstrate superior mechanical sensitivities of the graphene membranes, reaching more than 2 orders of magnitude higher compliances than commercial MEMS devices, and report a limit of detection as low as 15 dBSPL, which is 10 - 15 dB lower than that featured by current MEMS microphones.

Layered semiconductor EuTe 4 with charge density wave order in square tellurium sheets

We report a novel quasi-two dimensional compound of EuTe4 hosting charge density waves (CDW) instability. The compound has a crystallographic structure in a orthorhombic space group Pmmn (No.59) with cell parameters a = 4.6347(2){\AA}, b = 4.5119(2){\AA}, c = 15.6747(10){\AA} at room temperature. The pristine structure contains consecutive near-square Te sheets separated by corrugated Eu-Te slabs. Upon cooling, the compound experiences a phase transition near 255 K. X-ray crystallographic analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements reveal strong structural distortions in the low temperature phase, showing a superstructure with a periodic formation of Te-trimers in the monolayer Te sheets, yielding evidence for the formation of CDW order. The charge transport properties show a semiconducting behavior in the CDW state. Density functional theory calculations reveals a Fermi surface nesting driven instability with a nesting vector in good agreement with the one observed experimentally. Our finding provides a promising system for the study of CDW driven 2D semiconducting mechanisms, which would shed a new light on exploring novel 2D semiconductors with collective electronic states.

Experimental observation of hybrid TE-TM polarized surface waves supported by hyperbolic metasurface

Hyperbolic metasurfaces have gained significant attention due to their extraordinary electromagnetic properties to control propagating plane waves, but the excitation and propagation of the surface plasmon-polaritons at hyperbolic metasurfaces, called hyperbolic plasmons, have been experimentally observed just recently. However, the advantages of the hyperbolic plasmons, such as hybrid TE-TM polarization discussed below, are not yet fully revealed and analyzed. In this paper we focus on the numerical and experimental characterization of surface waves in the frequency range from 2 to 8 GHz supported by a hyperbolic metasurface composed of anisotropic metallic Jerusalem crosses printed on a thin dielectric substrate. We show different shapes of equal frequency contours, which correspond to a plethora of excitation and propagation regimes of surface waves. The principal novelty of this work consists in the experimental demonstration of the surface waves with a hybrid, i.e. mixed TE-TM, polarization. Surface waves with a hybrid polarization are the promising tool in a number of applications and phenomena including polarization converters, plasmonic sensors, plasmon steering over a surface, optical forces, spin-orbit photonics, and highlight the impact for the on-chip and planar networks.

Backbending phenomena in light nuclei at A~60 mass region

Recent studies of the backbending phenomenon in medium light weight nuclei near A~60 expanded greatly our interest about how the single particle orbits are nonlinearly affected by the collective motion. As a consequence we have applied a modi…ed version of the exponential model with the inclusion of paring correlation to describe the energy spectra of the ground state bands and/or the backbending phenomenon in mass region at A~60. A firm conclusion is obtained concerning the successful validity of the proposed modified model in describing the backbending phenomenon in this region. Comparison with different theoretical descriptions is discussed.
