Certified Topological Interaction in Neural Representations: Exact Tests and the Statistic They Require

Class disentanglement--the separation of a representation's class-conditional point clouds along depth and over training--is measured by descriptive curves: the sentence such a study wants to write, layer l+1 is more disentangled than layer l, is an eyeball judgement with no null. We supply the inferential layer for a topological measurement of class overlap, the Intersection Euler Characteristic Profile: the Euler characteristic of the overlap of the clouds' ball unions as a function of scale, from one Alpha-complex sweep with no boundary-matrix reduction. Every number carries a test--exact permutation tests in both directions, a guarded separation certificate the invariant requires, and a paired sign-flip test for comparative claims. Building that test taught a lesson outliving this invariant: its statistic must be scale-free. On the raw profile mass, which has units of feature length, 12,375 paired tests return 5,633 significant steps of which every one at the first epoch points the wrong way, certifying feature-norm dynamics as disentanglement; the dimensionless statistic returns 2,707, with 2,026 decreases. Across 111 networks and 52,650 measurements, disentanglement is depth-graded and early, and interaction quotients rank class pairs by confusability (rho=0.83), on par with cheap separability statistics. In a 96-model factorial, augmentation is the one training choice that separates classes relative to chance; weight decay compresses the overlap without separating. Only a k-fold statistic can pose the structural question: the joint entanglement of a class triple sits below its strongest pair in 97% of triple-layer cells and 99.5% of deep cells, at median ratios far below a measured null floor, in vision encoders and frozen language models--a regularity, not a law. The unnormalized mass predicts test accuracy (R^2=0.94), the quotient does not, and neither beats a linear probe.

The Non-Orientable Topology of Condorcet's Paradox

Preference cycles are prevalent in problems of decision-making, and are contradictory when preferences are assumed to be transitive. This contradiction underlies Condorcet's Paradox, a pioneering result of social choice theory, wherein intuitive and seemingly desirable constraints on decision-making necessarily lead to contradictory preference cycles. Topological methods have since broadened social choice theory and elucidated existing results. However, characterisations of preference cycles in topological social choice theory are lacking. In this paper, we address this gap by introducing a framework for topologically modelling preference cycles that generalises Baryshnikov's existing topological model of strict, ordinal preferences on 3 alternatives. In our framework, the contradiction underlying Condorcet's Paradox topologically corresponds to the non-orientability of a surface homeomorphic to either the Klein bottle or real projective plane, depending on how preference cycles are represented. These findings allow us to reformulate Arrow's Impossibility Theorem in terms of the orientability of a surface as well.

Efficient Polynomial-Time Decoding of Simplicial Anticodes with Near-Optimal Performance

In this work, we propose an efficient decoding algorithm for codes arising from simplicial complexes, a family of binary linear codes for which no decoding method of this type was previously known. Although the algorithm does not always attain the maximum theoretical error-correcting capability, it provides an explicit bound that can be computed directly from the structure of the complex. Moreover, this bound is asymptotically optimal: the ratio between the guaranteed correcting capability and the theoretical maximum converges to $1$ as the code length increases, under natural assumptions on the dimension of the maximal faces. The correction capability is also presented in specific examples. Finally, we introduce specific families of simplicial complexes where the algorithm successfully reaches this theoretical bound.

Spectral origin of the topological gap exponent d + η: mechanism, kernel, decomposition, and scope

The topological gap $Δ$ -- the excess $H_1$ total persistence of a critical point cloud over a density-matched null -- scales as $Δ\sim L^{d+η}$. We derive this analytically: the spectral integral $I(α) = \sum_{k\neq 0} S_{\mathrm{conn}}(k)\,|k|^α$ scales as $L^{2-α-η}$ when IR-dominated, giving $I(-2η) \sim L^{d+η}$. The decomposition $I(-2η) = I_0 \cdot I_{\mathrm{shape}}$ separates volume ($I_0 \propto N(1-m^2) \sim L^d$) from anomalous dimension ($I_{\mathrm{shape}} \sim L^η$); the volume factor accounts for the magnetization-driven per-configuration variance of $Δ$. We prove the mechanism requires $d < 2 + η$ (IR dominance), confining it to $d = 2$ for physical systems; in $d = 3$ the spectral integral is UV-dominated, explaining why density normalization is needed. An $α$-sweep for Potts $q = 4$ at $L = 32$--$256$ finds $α_{\mathrm{opt}}$ in $[-0.75, -0.5]$, consistent with $-2η_{\mathrm{Ising}}$ and inconsistent with $-2η_{q=4} = -1$; we flag this as tentative pending $L \geq 1024$ confirmation. The $\langle m^2 \cdot I(-2η)\rangle$ hyperscaling product is dominated by the correlation $r(m^2, I) \approx -0.98$ via the shared $I_0$ amplitude, so we report it as a covariance-correction analysis. Under a heuristic argument extending Divol--Polonik to inhomogeneous Poisson intensities, the bare PH kernel is flat; the effective kernel acquires $k$-dependence only at criticality. The per-configuration agreement between $Δ$ and $I(-0.5)$ is primarily a magnetization correlation: $R^2 = 0.91$ at $L = 256$ collapses to $R^2 \approx 0$ once $|M|$ is partialed out. Per-configuration evidence corroborates the $I_0$ Parseval identity but not the $|k|^{-2η}$ shape factor; the latter is established by ensemble $L$-scaling.
