Dynamical Behavior of Spins in the Rare-Earth Kagomé Pr$_3$Ga$_5$SiO$_{14}$

We report on the use of $^{69,71}$Ga nuclear magnetic resonance to probe spin dynamics in the rare-earth kagomé system Pr$_3$Ga$_5$SiO$_{14}$. We find that the spin-lattice relaxation rate $^{69}1/T_1$ exhibits a maximum around 30 K, below which the Pr$^{3+}$ spin correlation time $τ$ shows novel field-dependent behavior consistent with a field-dependent gap in the excitation spectrum. The spin-spin relaxation rate $^{69}1/T_{2}$ exhibits a peak at a lower temperature (10 K) below which field-dependent power-law behavior close to $T^{2}$ is observed. These results point to field-induced formation of nanoscale magnetic clusters consistent with recent neutron scattering measurements.

Smeared quantum phase transition in the dissipative random quantum Ising model

We investigate the quantum phase transition in the random transverse-field Ising model under the influence of Ohmic dissipation. To this end, we numerically implement a strong-disorder renormalization-group scheme. We find that Ohmic dissipation destroys the quantum critical point and the associated quantum Griffiths phase by smearing. Our results quantitatively confirm a recent theory [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 100}, 240601 (2008)] of smeared quantum phase transitions.

Reiter's polaron wavefunction applied to a $t_{2g}$ orbital t-J model

Using the self-consistent Born approximation we calculate Reiter's wavefunction for a single hole introduced into the undoped and orbitally ordered ground state of the t-J model with $t_{2g}$ orbital degrees of freedom. While the number of excitations is similar to the spin t-J model for a given J/t, a distinct structure of the calculated wavefunction and its momentum dependence is identified suggesting the formation of a novel type of mobile polarons.

Polaron Properties of an Impurity in Bose-Einstein-Condensation

In this paper we study an impurity in Bose-Einstein-Condensate system at $T=0K$ and suppose the contact forms for boson-boson and boson-impurity interactions. Using Bogoliubov theory and a further approximation corresponding to only think over the forward scattering of impurity by bosons, we derive a reduced Hamiltonian whose form is the same as the Fröhlich Hamiltonian for large polaron. By using Lee-Low-Pines (LLP) theory for large polaron, we obtain the effective mass of impurity, the phonon number carried by impurity and the energy related to the existence of impurity. In addition, we also discuss the valid range for forward-scattering approximation.

Electronic zero-point oscillations in the strong-interaction limit of density functional theory

The exchange-correlation energy in Kohn-Sham density functional theory can be expressed exactly in terms of the change in the expectation of the electron-electron repulsion operator when, in the many-electron hamiltonian, this same operator is multiplied by a real parameter $λ$ varying between 0 (Kohn-Sham system) and 1 (physical system). In this process, usually called adiabatic connection, the one-electron density is kept fixed by a suitable local one-body potential. The strong-interaction limit of density functional theory, defined as the limit $λ\to\infty$, turns out to be, like the opposite non-interacting Kohn-Sham limit ($λ\to 0$) mathematically simpler than the physical ($λ=1$) case, and can be used to build an approximate interpolation formula between $λ\to 0$ and $λ\to\infty$ for the exchange-correlation energy. Here we extend the exact treatment of the $λ\to\infty$ limit [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 75}, 042511 (2007)] to the next leading term, describing zero-point oscillations of strictly correlated electrons, with numerical examples for small spherical atoms. We also propose an improved approximate functional for the zero-point term and a revised interpolation formula for the exchange-correlation energy satisfying more exact constraints.

Improved time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect technique and dynamic magnetization reversal mechanism of perpendicularly magnetized $L1_{\mathrm{0}}$ FePt films

The dynamic coercivity cannot be measured rigorously by the conventional time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect technique because the irreversible deviation of the transient magnetization is accumulated. In order to remove the accumulation effect, the alternating magnetic field is employed and synchronized with the femtosecond laser pulse. Since the sample is reset before each single laser pulse, the accumulation effect of the irreversible deviation of the transient magnetization is removed. For perpendicularly magnetized $L1_{\mathrm{0}}$ FePt films, the dynamic magnetization reversal process is accomplished by the nucleation of reversed domains and the pinned domain wall motion.

What drives the insulating state in ultrathin films of SrRuO3?

Using density functional calculations we have examined the evolution of the electronic structure of SrRuO3 films grown on SrTiO3 substrates as a function of film thickness. At the ultrathin limit of two monolayers (RuO2-terminated surface) the films are found to be at the brink of a spin-state transition which drives the system to an antiferromagnetic and insulating state. Increasing the film thickness to four monolayers, one finds the surprising result that two entirely different solutions coexist. An antiferromagnetic insulating solution coexists with a metallic solution corresponding to an antiferromagnetic surface and a ferromagnetic bulk. The electronic structure found at the ultrathin limit persists for thicker films and an unusual result is predicted. Thicker films are found to be metallic as expected for the bulk, but the magnetism does not directly evolve to the bulk ferromagnetic state. The surface remains antiferromagnetic while the bulk exhibits ferromagnetic ordering.

Diffusivity of adatoms on plasma-exposed surfaces determined from the ionization energy approximation and ionic polarizability

Microscopic surface diffusivity theory based on atomic ionization energy concept is developed to explain the variations of the atomic and displacement polarizations with respect to the surface diffusion activation energy of adatoms in the process of self-assembly of quantum dots on plasma-exposed surfaces. These polarizations are derived classically, while the atomic polarization is quantized to obtain the microscopic atomic polarizability. The surface diffusivity equation is derived as a function of the ionization energy. The results of this work can be used to fine-tune the delivery rates of different adatoms onto nanostructure growth surfaces and optimize the low-temperature plasma based nanoscale synthesis processes.

Experimental determination of the microscopic origin of magnetism in parent iron pnictides

Like high Tc cuprates, the newly discovered iron based superconductors lie in close proximity to a magnetically ordered parent phase. However, while the magnetic order in parent cuprates is known to derive from a spin-spin local superexchange interaction, a plethora of experiments including neutron scattering have so far been unable to conclusively resolve whether a local moment Heisenberg description applies in parent iron based compounds, or whether magnetism arises from a collective SDW order instability. These two alternatives can in principle be distinguished by measuring the low energy momentum-resolved bulk-representative electronic structure of the magnetically ordered phase. Using a combination of polarization dependent ARPES and STM, we have isolated the complete low-lying bulk representative electronic structure of magnetic SrFe2As2 with d-orbital symmetry specificity for the first time. Our results show that while multiple bands with different iron d-orbital character indeed contribute to charge transport, only one pair of bands with opposite mirror symmetries microscopically exhibit an itinerant SDW instability with energy scales on the order of 50 meV. The orbital resolved band topology below T_SDW point uniquely to a nesting driven band hybridization mechanism of the observed antiferromagnetism in the iron pnictides, and is consistent with an unusual anisotropic nodal-density-wave state. In addition, these results place strong constraints on many theories of pnictide superconductivity that require a strict local moment magnetism starting point.

Collective modes and emergent SO(6) symmetry in the iron pnictides

We show the existence of an emergent SO(6) symmetry in the low energy description of the iron pnictides. This approximate symmetry provides a unifying framework for the occurrence of spin density wave (SDW) and superconductivity (SC) in these materials. We use this symmetry to make several predictions for future experiments, including the topology of the phase diagram and the presence of various resonant modes in neutron scattering experiments in both the SC and SDW phases. We also predict the existence of a new "Orbital Density Wave" state, which competes with both SDW and SC orders.

Time-dependent correlation function of the Jordan-Wigner operator as a Fredholm determinant

We calculate a correlation function of the Jordan-Wigner operator in a class of free-fermion models formulated on an infinite one-dimensional lattice. We represent this function in terms of the determinant of an integrable Fredholm operator, convenient for analytic and numerical investigations. By using Wick's theorem, we avoid the form-factor summation customarily used in literature for treating similar problems.

Electric-field-dependent energy structure of quasi-one-dimensional conductor o-TaS_3

Energy structure of the Peierls gap in orthorhombic TaS$_3$ is examined by spectral study of photoconduction. The gap edge and energy levels inside the Peierls gap are observed. The amplitude of the energy levels is found to depend on both the temperature and the electric field. The electric field of the order of 10 V/cm affects the energy levels and leads to the redistribution of intensity between peaks. The small value of the electric field indicates participation of the collective state in formation of the energy levels inside the Peierls gap.

Exact solutions of an SO(5)-invariant spin-3/2 Fermi gas model

An exactly solvable model describing the dilute spin-3/2 fermion gas in one-dimensional optical trap is proposed. The diagonalization of the model Hamiltonian is derived by means of the Bethe ansatz method. Exotic spin excitations such as the heavy spinon with fractional spin 3/2, the neutral spinon with spin zero and the dressed spinon with spin 1/2 are found based on the exact solution.

Specific heat and orbital moment of CoO from first-principles atomistic calculations

We have for the first time calculated low-energy electronic structure both in paramagnetic and magnetic state as well as zero-temperature properties and thermodynamics. We consistently described magnetic properties of CoO in agreement with its insulating ground state. The orbital moment of 1.42 mu_B gives 35 contribution to the total moment of 4.04 mu_B at T =0 K. We have calculated from this low-energy electronic structure the temperature dependence of the specific heat being in nice agreement with experimental data. In our approach CoO is an insulator independently on distortions and the magnetic order.

Two component dynamics of the superconducting order parameter revealed by time-resolved Raman scattering

We study the dynamics of the superconducting order parameter in the high-$T_c$ cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8-δ}$ by employing a novel time-resolved pump-probe Raman experiment. We find two different coupling mechanisms that contribute equally to the pair breaking peak. One coupling sets in very fast at 2ps and relaxes slow, while the other one is delayed and sets in roughly at 5ps and relaxes fast. A model that couples holes through phonons is able to reproduce one part of the condensate dynamics, thus, we argue that hole-spin interactions are of importance as well.

Possible Kondo effect in the iron arsenides

The normal state of the iron arsenides shows the poor metallic behavior mixed with strong magnetic fluctuations. In particular, some FeAs-1111 and FeAs-122 compounds show the linear-T dependence of susceptibility above the spin-density wave (SDW) transition and the logarithmic upturn of resistivity at low temperatures. We suggest that this is due to the spin-flip scattering between the charge carriers and the local moments in the undoped FeAs layer where Kondo effect coexists with the SDW. This scenario is also accounted for the change of the magnetoresistance from positive to negative in the Sr3Sc2O5Fe2As2 compound.

Coherent Stimulated X-ray Raman Spectroscopy; Attosecond Extension of RIXS

Spontaneous and stimulated resonant inelastic X-ray Raman scattering signals are calculated using the Keldysh-Schwinger closed-time path loop and expressed as overlaps of Doorway and Window electron-hole wavepackets. These are recast in terms of the one-particle Green's functions and expansion coefficients of configuration interaction singles for valence excitations, which can be obtained from standard electronic structure codes. Calculation for many-body states of ground and core-excited system is avoided.

Magnon-Mediated Pairing and Isotope Effect in Iron-based Superconductors

Within a minimal model for the iron-based superconductors in which itinerant electrons interact with a band of local moments, we derive a a general conclusion for multi-band superconductivity. In a multi-band superconductor, due to the Adler theorem, the inter-band scattering dominates the intra-band scattering at the long wave length limit as long as both interactions are induced by Goldstone boson (which is magnon in our case) and the transfered momentum is nonzero. Such kind of interaction leads to a well-known sigh-reversing superconductivity even if the inter-band and intra-band interaction are repulsive. This effect can be modeled as arising from an internal Josephson link between the Fermi surface sheets. Our model is also consistent with the recently discovered coexistence of superconductivity and magnetic order in iron-pnictides. Although the experimentally observed isotope effect is large, $α=0.4$, we show that it is consistent with a non-phononic mechanism in which it is the isotope effects result in a change in the lattice constant and as a consequence the zero-point motion of the Fe atoms.
