Trigger and Data Acquisition for hadron colliders at the Energy Frontier

The LHC trigger and data acquisition systems will need significant modifications to operate at the HL-LHC. Due to the increased occupancy of each crossing, Level-1 trigger systems would experience degraded performance of the LHC algorithms presently selecting up to 100 kHz of crossings from the LHC input rate of 40 MHz. The DAQ systems will experience larger event sizes due to greater occupancy and higher channel counts of new detectors. This paper summarizes findings and recommendations to upgrade the LHC experiments trigger and data acquisition systems for operation at the HL-HLC.

Precision Neutrino Oscillation Measurements using Simultaneous High-Power, Low-Energy Project-X Beams

The first phase of the long-baseline neutrino experiment, LBNE10, will use a broadband, high-energy neutrino beam with a 10-kt liquid argon TPC at 1300 km to study neutrino oscillation. In this paper, we describe potential upgrades to LBNE10 that use Project X to produce high-intensity, low-energy neutrino beams. Simultaneous, high-power operation of 8- and 60-GeV beams with a 200-kt water Cerenkov detector would provide sensitivity to nu_mu to nu_e oscillations at the second oscillation maximum. We find that with ten years of data, it would be possible to measure sin2(2theta_13) with precision comparable to that expected from reactor antineutrino disappearance and to measure the value of the CP phase, delta_CP, with an uncertainty of (5-10) degrees. This document is submitted for inclusion in Snowmass 2013.

The NMSSM at the Cosmic Frontier for Snowmass 2013

We examine the NMSSM at the cosmic frontier in the post Higgs discovery world. For DM relic abundance consistent with measurement, we find the neutralino can either be singlino or bino dominated. Wino and higgsino DM generally yield a lower abundance, but offer opportunities of detection at IceCube. For both cases, future SI direct detection experiments cover a majority of the model, including nearly all of the bino and higgsino scenarios.

A Critical Examination on L/E Analysis in the Underground Detectors with a Computer Numerical Experiment Part 1

In the present paper we consider neutrino events due to quasi-elastic scattering (QEL) as the most reliable events among various candidate events to be analyzed, and have carried out the first step of an L/E analysis which aims to confirm the survival probability with a Numerical Computer Experiment. The most important factor in the survival probability is Lnu and Enu, but this cannot be measured for such neutral particles. Instead, Lmu and Emu is utilized in the L/E analysis, where Lnu, Lmu, Enu and Emu denote the flight path lengths of the incident neutrinos, those of the emitted leptons, the energies of the incident neutrinos and those of the emitted leptons, respectively. According to our Computer Numerical Experiment, the relation of Lnu/Enu is nearly equal to Lmu/Emu doesn't hold. In subsequent papers, we show the results on an L/E analysis with the Computer Numerical Experiment based on our results obtained in the present paper.

High density effects in ultrahigh neutrino interactions

The high parton density present at high energies and large nuclei is expected to modify the lepton - hadron cross section and the associated observables. In this paper we analyse the impact of the high density effects in the average inelasticity and the neutrino - nucleus cross section at ultra high energies. We compare the predictions associated to the linear DGLAP dynamics with those from the Color Glass Condensate formalism, which includes non-linear effects. Our results demonstrated that the non-linear effects reduce the average inelasticity and that the predictions of the distinct approaches for the neutrino - nucleus cross section at ultra-high energies are similar.

Measurement of the integrated luminosities of the data taken by BESIII at $\sqrt s=$ 3.650 and 3.773 GeV

Data sets were collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at the center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt s =$ 3.650 GeV during May 2009 and at $\sqrt s=$ 3.773 GeV from January 2010 to May 2011. By analyzing the large angle Bhabha scattering events, the integrated luminosities of the two data sets are measured %at $\sqrt s=$ 3.650 and 3.773 GeV to be ($\rm 44.49\pm0.02\pm0.44$) $\rm pb^{-1}$ and ($\rm 2916.94\pm0.18\pm29.17$) $\rm pb^{-1}$, respectively, where the first error is statistical and the second error is systematic.

Multiple Detectors for a Short-Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Search Near Reactors

Reactor antineutrino experiments have the ability to search for neutrino oscillations independent of reactor flux predictions using a relative measurement of the neutrino flux and spectrum across a range of baselines. The range of accessible oscillation parameters are determined by the baselines of the detector arrangement. We examine the sensitivity of short-baseline experiments with more than one detector and discuss the optimization of a second, far detector. The extended reach in baselines of a 2-detector experiment will improve sensitivity to short-baseline neutrino oscillations while also increasing the ability to distinguish between 3+1 mixing and other non-standard models.

Next-Generation Liquid-Scintillator-Based Detectors: Quantums Dots and Picosecond Timing

Liquid-scintillator-based detectors are a robust technology that scales well to large volumes. For this reason, they are attractive for experiments searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay. A combination of improved photo-detection technology and novel liquid scintillators may allow for the extraction of particle direction in addition to the total energy of the particle. Such an advance would find applications beyond searches for neutrinoless double-beta decay.

Coupling constant for $Λ(1405)\bar{K}N$

The value of the $Λ(1405){\bar K}N$ coupling constant $g_{Λ(1405)\bar{K}N}$ is obtained by fitting it to the experimental data on the total cross sections of the $K^-p \to π^0Σ^0$ reaction. On the basis of an effective Lagrangian approach and isobar model, we show that the value $|g_{Λ(1405)\bar{K}N}| = 1.51 \pm 0.10$ could be extracted from the available experimental data by assuming that the $s-$channel $Λ(1405)$ resonance plays a dominant role, whereas, the background contributions from the $s-$channel $Λ(1115)$, $t-$channel $K^*$ and $u-$channel nucleon pole processes are small and can be neglected. However, the $u-$channel nucleon pole diagram may also give an important contribution in the present calculations. After the background contributions are taken into account, the above value of $g_{Λ(1405)\bar{K}N}$ is reduced to $|g_{Λ(1405)\bar{K}N}| = 0.77 \pm 0.07$, which is not supported by the previous calculations and the recent CLAS measurements. The theoretical calculations on differential cross sections are also presented, which can be checked by future experiments.

The vibration research of the AC dipole-girder system for CSNS/RCS

China spallation neutron source(CSNS) is a high intensity proton accelerator based facility, and its accelerator complex includes two main parts: an H- linac and a rapid cycling synchrotron(RCS). The rcs accumulates the 80MeV proton beam, and accelerates it to 1.6GeV, with a repetition rate of 25 Hz. The AC dipole of the RCS is operated at a 25Hz sinusoidal alternating current which causes severe vibration. The vibration will influence the long-term safety and reliable operation of the magnet. The dipole magnet of RCS is active vibration equipment which is different with ground vibration accelerator. It is very important to design and research the dynamic characteristic of the dipole-girder system. This paper takes the dipole and girder as a specific model system, a method for researching the dynamic characteristic of the system is put forward by combining theoretical calculation with experimental testing. The ansys simulation method plays a very important role in the girder structure design stage. With the method the mechanical resonance phenomenon was avoided in the girder design time. At the same time the dipole vibratory force will influence the other equipment through the girder. It is necessary to isolate and decrease the dipole vibration. So a new isolator was designed to isolate the vibratory force and decrease the vibration amplitude of the magnet.

The B-L Phase Transition: Implications for Cosmology and Neutrinos

We investigate the possibility that the hot thermal phase of the early universe is ignited in consequence of the B-L phase transition, which represents the cosmological realization of the spontaneous breaking of the Abelian gauge symmetry associated with B-L, the difference between baryon number B and lepton number L. Prior to the B-L phase transition, the universe experiences a stage of hybrid inflation. Towards the end of inflation, the false vacuum of unbroken B-L decays, which entails tachyonic preheating as well as the production of cosmic strings. The dynamics of the B-L breaking Higgs field and the B-L gauge degrees of freedom, in combination with thermal processes, generate an abundance of heavy (s)neutrinos. These (s)neutrinos decay into radiation, thereby reheating the universe, generating the baryon asymmetry of the universe and setting the stage for the thermal production of gravitinos. We study the B-L phase transition in the full supersymmetric Abelian Higgs model, for which we derive and discuss the Lagrangian in arbitrary and unitary gauge. As for the subsequent reheating process, we formulate the complete set of Boltzmann equations, the solutions of which enable us to give a detailed and time-resolved description of reheating. Assuming the gravitino to be the lightest superparticle (LSP), the requirement of consistency between hybrid inflation, leptogenesis and gravitino dark matter implies relations between neutrino and superparticle masses, in particular a lower bound on the gravitino mass of 10 GeV. Similarly, in the case of very heavy gravitinos, the nonthermal production of pure wino or higgsino LSPs in heavy gravitino decays can account for the observed amount of dark matter, while simultaneously fulfilling the constraints imposed by primordial nucleosynthesis and leptogenesis.

Higgs factories

Over the past two decades, the high energy physics community has been actively discussing and developing a number of post-LHC collider projects; however, none of them have been approved due to high costs and the uncertainty in post-LHC physics scenarios. There have been great expectations of rich new physics in the 0.1-1 TeV mass region: the Higgs boson (one or several), supersymmetry, or perhaps new particles from the dark-matter family. It has been the general consensus that the best machine for the detailed study of new physics to be discovered at the LHC would be an energy-frontier linear e+e- collider. Physicists held their breath waiting for the results from the LHC. In summer 2012, two LHC detectors, ATLAS and CMS, announced the discovery of a Higgs boson with the mass of 126 GeV and (still) nothing else. The absence of new physics in the region below 1 TeV has changed the post-LHC collider R&D priorities and triggered a zoo of project proposals for the precision study of the 126 GeV Higgs boson, possibly with further upgrades to higher energies. This paper gives an overview of these projects; it is based largely on the reports presented at the first workshop on Higgs factories held at FNAL a few days prior to the present workshop in Protvino.

Limitation on the luminosity of e+e- storage rings due to beamstrahlung

Particle loss due to the emission of single energetic beamstrahlung photons in beam collisions is shown to impose a fundamental limit on storage-ring luminosities at energies greater than 2E~140 GeV for head-on collisions and 2E~40 GeV for crab-waist collisions. Above these threshold energies, the suppression factor due to beamstrahlung scales as 1/E^{4/3}, and for a fixed power of synchrotron radiation, the luminosity L is proportional to R/E^{13/3}, where R is the collider radius. For 2E > 150 GeV, both collision schemes have similar luminosity limits. The luminosities attainable at storage-ring and linear-collider (LC) 2E=240 GeV Higgs factories are comparable; at higher energies, LCs are preferable. This conference paper is based on my recent PRL publication [1], supplemented with additional comments on linac-ring e+e- colliders and ring e+e- colliders with charge compensation (four-beam collisions).
