Seiberg-Witten invariants and surface singularities II. Singularities with good $\C^*$-action

This is a continuation of our paper math.AG/0111298. We prove an explicit formula for the geometric genus p_g of a quasihomogeneous isolated surface singularity in terms of the Seiberg-Witten invariant of the link and other topological data which can be read from a resolution graph of the singularity. Moreover, we also determine all the Reidemeister-Turaev sign-refined torsion of the link (associated with any spin^c structure) in terms of the Seifert invariants.

Periods and mixed motives

We define motivic multiple polylogarithms and prove the double shuffle relations for them. We use this to study the motivic fundamental group of the multiplicative group - {N-th roots of unity} and relate it to geometry of modular varieties. In particular we get new information about the actionof the Galois group on the pro-l completion of the above fundamental group. This paper is the second part of "Multiple polylogarithms and mixed Tate motives" math.AG/0103059

Wilson's grassmannian and a noncommutative Quadric

Let the group G of m-th roots of unity act on the complex line by multiplication, inducing an action on the algebra, Diff, of polynomial differential operators on the line. Following Crawley-Boevey and Holland, we introduce a multiparameter deformation, D_c, of the smash-product (Diff # G). Our main result provides natural bijections between (roughly speaking) the following spaces: (1) G-equivariant version of Wilson's adelic Grassmannian of rank r; (2) Rank r projective D_c-modules (equipped with generic trivialization); (3) Rank r torsion-free sheaves on a `noncommutative quadric'; (4) Disjoint union of Nakajima quiver varieties for the cyclic quiver with m vertices. The bijection between (1) and (2) is provided by a version of Riemann-Hilbert correspondence between D-modules and sheaves. The bijections between (2), (3) and (4) were motivated by our previous work math.AG/0103068. The resulting bijection between (1) and (4) reduces, in the very special case: r=1 and G=1, to the partition of (rank 1) adelic Grassmannian into a union of Calogero-Moser spaces, discovered by Wilson. This gives, in particular, a natural and purely algebraic approach to Wilson's result.

Rationally connected varieties and fundamental groups

Let U be an open subset of a unirational variety (or more generally of a separably rationally connected variety). We prove that there is rational curve C in U such that the fundamental group of C surjects onto the fundamental group of U. The proof improves the earlier proof (math.AG/0003138) and works in any characteristic. Much improved version, thanks to comments of Colliot-Thélène.

The Frobenius map, rank 2 vector bundles and Kummer's quartic surface in characteristic 2 and 3

Let X be a smooth projective curve of genus g>1 defined over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic p>0. Let M_X(r) be the moduli space of semi-stable rank r vector bundles with fixed trivial determinant. The relative Frobenius map F : X \to X_1 induces by pull-back a rational map V: M_{X_1}(r) \to M_X(r). We determine the equations of V in the following two cases (1) (g,r,p) = (2,2,2) and X non-ordinary with Hasse-Witt invariant equal to 1 (see math.AG/0005044 for the case X ordinary), and (2) (g,r,p) = (2,2,3). We also show, for any triple (g,r,p), the existence of base points of V, i.e., semi-stable bundles E such that F^* E is not semi-stable.

On multiplicities of graded sequences of ideals

We generalize a result of Ein-Lazarsfeld-Smith (math.AG/0202303), proving that for an arbitrary sequence of zero-dimensional ideals, the multiplicity of the sequence is equal with its volume. This is done using a deformation to monomial ideals. As a consequence of our result, we obtain a formula which computes the multiplicity of an ideal I in terms of the multiplicities of the initial monomial ideals of the powers I^m. We use this to give a new proof of the inequality between multiplicity and the log canonical threshold due to de Fernex, Ein and the author.

Inclusion-exclusion and Segre classes, II

Considerations based on the known relation between different characteristic classes for singular hypersufaces suggest that a form of the `inclusion-exclusion' principle may hold for Segre classes. We formulate and prove such a principle for a notion closely related to Segre classes. This is used to provide a simple computation of the classes introduced in math.AG/0203122, in certain special (but representative) cases.

The (-1) twist

We extend the results of the eprint math.AG/0204256, obtained with Herb Clemens, about sections of nonnegative twists of the canonical bundle of subvarieties of generic hypersurfaces, to the case of the (-1) twist.

Families of abelian varieties over curves with maximal Higgs field

Let f:X-->Y be a semi-stable family of complex abelian varieties over a curve Y of genus q, and smooth over the complement of s points. If F(1,0) denotes the non-flat (1,0) part of the corresponding variation of Hodge structures, the Arakelov inequalities say that 2deg(F(1,0)) is bounded from above by g=rank(F(1,0))(2q-2+s). We show that for s>0 families reaching this bound are isogenous to the g-fold product of a modular family of elliptic curves, and a constant abelian variety. The content of this note became part of the article "A characterization of certain Shimura curves in the moduly stack of abelian varieties" (math.AG/0207228), where we also handle the case s=0.

Local models in the ramified case. II. Splitting models

This paper is a continuation of our paper math.AG/0006222. We study the reduction of certain PEL Shimura varieties with parahoric level structure at primes p at which the group that defines the Shimura variety ramifies. We describe "good" $p$-adic integral models of these Shimura varieties and study their 'etale local structure. In particular, we exhibit a stratification of their (singular) special fibers and give a partial calculation of the sheaf of nearby cycles.

Canonical models and stable reduction for plurifibered varieties

A cheap method for constructing canonical models and complete moduli for complex projective varieties with a structure called "rational plurifibration" is given. A result about semistable reduction (whose nature is slightly different from alg-geom/9707012) is deduced. The method involves recursive application of moduli stacks of twisted stable maps (math.AG/9908167) and a systematic circumvention of any difficult MMP issues.

Seiberg-Witten invariants and surface singularities III. Splicings and cyclic covers

We verify the conjecture formulated in math.AG/0111298 for suspension singularities of type $g(x,y,z)= f(x,y)+z^n$, where $f$ is an irreducible plane curve singularity. More precisely, we prove that the modified Seiberg-Witten invariant of the link $M$ of $g$, associated with the canonical $spin^c$ structure, equals $-σ(F)/8$, where $σ(F)$ is the signature of the Milnor fiber of $g$. In order to do this, we prove general splicing formulae for the Casson-Walker invariant and for the sign refined Reidemeister-Turaev torsion (in particular, for the modified Seiberg-Witten invariant too). These provide results for some cyclic covers as well. As a by-product, we compute all the relevant invariants of $M$ in terms of the Newton pairs of $f$ and the integer $n$.

The equivariant Toda lattice, I

We study a reduction of the Toda lattice in the limit of infintesimal lattice spacing. Using this reduction, we formulate a conjecture for the equivariant Gromov-Witten invariants of the sphere, which we prove in genus 0. This conjecture follows from recent work of Okounkov and Pandharipande (math.AG/0207233), combined with results from the sequel to this paper.

Homotopical Algebraic Geometry I: Topos theory

This is the first of a series of papers devoted to lay the foundations of Algebraic Geometry in homotopical and higher categorical contexts (for part II, see math.AG/0404373). In this first part we investigate a notion of higher topos. For this, we use S-categories (i.e. simplicially enriched categories) as models for certain kind of \infty-categories, and we develop the notions of S-topologies, S-sites and stacks over them. We prove in particular, that for an S-category T endowed with an S-topology, there exists a model category of stacks over T, generalizing the model category structure on simplicial presheaves over a Grothendieck site of A. Joyal and R. Jardine. We also prove some analogs of the relations between topologies and localizing subcategories of the categories of presheaves, by proving that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between S-topologies on an S-category T, and certain left exact Bousfield localizations of the model category of pre-stacks on T. Based on the above results, we study the notion of model topos introduced by C. Rezk, and we relate it to our model categories of stacks over S-sites. In the second part of the paper, we present a parallel theory where S-categories, S-topologies and S-sites are replaced by model categories, model topologies and model sites. We prove that a canonical way to pass from the theory of stacks over model sites to the theory of stacks over S-sites is provided by the simplicial localization construction of Dwyer and Kan. We also prove a Giraud's style theorem characterizing model topoi internally. As an example of application, we propose a definition of etale K-theory of ring spectra, extending the etale K-theory of commutative rings.

Picard-Fuchs equations, Integrable Systems, and higher Algebraic K-theory

This paper continues our previous work done in math.AG/0008207 and is an attempt to establish a conceptual framework which generalizes the work of Manin on the relation between non-linear second order ODEs of type Painleve VI and integrable systems. The principle behind everything is a strong interaction between K-theory and Picard-Fuchs type differential equations via Abel-Jacobi maps. Our main result is an extension of a theorem of Donagi and Markman to our setup.

The equivariant Gromov-Witten theory of P^1

We express all equivariant Gromov-Witten invariants of the projective line as matrix elements of explicit operators acting in the Fock space. As a consequence, we prove the equivariant theory is governed by the 2-Toda hierarchy of Ueno and Takasaki. This is the second in a sequence of three papers devoted to the Gromov-Witten theory of nonsingular target curves (the first paper of the series is math.AG/0204305).
