The algebraic structure of relative twisted vertex operators

Twisted vertex operators based on rational lattices have had many applications in vertex operator algebra theory and conformal field theory. In this paper, ``relativized'' twisted vertex operators are constructed in a general context based on isometries of rational lattices, and a generalized twisted Jacobi identity is established for them. This result generalizes many previous results. Relatived untwisted vertex operators had been studied in a monograph by the authors. The present paper includes as a special case the proof of the main relations among twisted vertex operators based on even lattices announced some time ago by the second author.

Burau representation and random walk on string links

Using a probabilistic interpretation of the Burau representation of the braid group offered by Vaughan Jones, we generalize the Burau representation to a representation of the semigroup of string links. This representation is determined by a linear system, and is dominated by finite type string link invariants. For positive string links, the representation matrix can be interpreted as the transition matrix of a Markov process. For positive non-separable links, we show that all states are persistent. (This is an extensively revised version of the first author's original paper titled "Burau representation and random walk on knots".)

Introduction to Quantum Lie Algebras

Quantum Lie algebras are generalizations of Lie algebras whose structure constants are power series in $h$. They are derived from the quantized enveloping algebras $\uqg$. The quantum Lie bracket satisfies a generalization of antisymmetry. Representations of quantum Lie algebras are defined in terms of a generalized commutator. In this paper the recent general results about quantum Lie algebras are introduced with the help of the explicit example of $(sl_2)_h$.

Squared Hopf algebras and reconstruction theorems

Given an abelian k-linear rigid monoidal category V, where k is a perfect field, we define squared coalgebras as objects of cocompleted V tensor V (Deligne's tensor product of categories) equipped with the appropriate notion of comultiplication. Based on this, (squared) bialgebras and Hopf algebras are defined without use of braiding. If V is the category of k-vector spaces, squared (co)algebras coincide with conventional ones. If V is braided, a braided Hopf algebra can be obtained from a squared one. Reconstruction theorems give equivalence of squared co- (bi-, Hopf) algebras in V and corresponding fibre functors to V (which is not the case with other definitions). Finally, squared quasitriangular Hopf coalgebra is a solution to the problem of defining quantum groups in braided categories.

On the Deformation Quantization of super-Poisson Brackets

We show that for every vector bundle E over any given symplectic manifold M there exists an explicitly given super-Poisson bracket on the space of sections of the dual Grassmann bundle associated to E built out of symplectic structure of M, a fibre metric on E, and a connection in E compatible with the given fibre metric. Moreover, we construct a deformation quantization for this space of sections by means of a Fedosov type procedure.

Shifted Schur Functions

The classical algebra $Λ$ of symmetric functions has a remarkable deformation $Λ^*$, which we call the algebra of shifted symmetric functions. In the latter algebra, there is a distinguished basis formed by shifted Schur functions $s^*_μ$, where $μ$ ranges over the set of all partitions. The main significance of the shifted Schur functions is that they determine a natural basis in $Z(\frak{gl}(n))$, the center of the universal enveloping algebra $U(\frak{gl}(n))$, $n=1,2,\ldots$. The functions $s^*_μ$ are closely related to the factorial Schur functions introduced by Biedenharn and Louck and further studied by Macdonald and other authors. A part of our results about the functions $s^*_μ$ has natural classical analogues (combinatorial presentation, generating series, Jacobi--Trudi identity, Pieri formula). Other results are of different nature (connection with the binomial formula for characters of $GL(n)$, an explicit expression for the dimension of skew shapes $λ/μ$, Capelli--type identities, a characterization of the functions $s^*_μ$ by their vanishing properties, `coherence property', special symmetrization map $S(\frak{gl}(n))\to U(\frak{gl}(n))$. The main application that we have in mind is the asymptotic character theory for the unitary groups $U(n)$ and symmetric groups $S(n)$ as $n\to\infty$. The results of this paper were used in \cite{Ok1--3}.

Some automorphisms of Generalized Kac-Moody algebras

To any symmetry of the Cartan matrix of a Generalized Kac-Moody (GKM) algebra we associate a family of automorphisms of the algebra which act in a natural way on the modules of the GKM algebra. We introduce the twining character of a module which is obtained by inserting the action of such an automorphism into the trace that appears in the ordinary character. Twining characters of integrable highest weight modules and Verma modules satisfy a character formula which involves a certain subgroup of the Weyl group. This subgroup is shown to be the Weyl group of another GKM algebra, called the orbit Lie algebra, and hence the twining characters coincide with ordinary characters of the orbit Lie algebra.

Solutions of the elliptic qKZB equations and Bethe ansatz I

We give an integral representation for solutions of the elliptic quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard difference equations, in the case of sl(2). The result is based on a geometric construction of highest weight representations of the elliptic quantum group associated to sl(2). We also obtain Bethe ansatz eigenfunctions for the corresponding integrable systems of difference operators, and prove their completeness in some cases.

Semiquantum Geometry

In this paper we study associative algebras with a Poisson algebra structure on the center acting by derivations on the rest of the algebra. These structures, which we call Poisson fibred algebras, appear in the study of quantum groups at roots of 1 and related algebras, as well as in the representation theory of affine Lie algebras at the critical level. Poisson fibred algebras lead to a generalization of Poisson geometry, which we develop in the paper. We also take up the general study of noncommutative spaces which are close to enough commutative ones so that they contain enough points to have interesting commutative geometry. One of the most striking uses of our noncommutative spaces is the quantum Borel-Weil-Bott Theorem for quantum sl_q (2) at a root of unity, which comes as a calculation of the cohomology of actual sheaves on actual topological spaces.

Geometric Construction of Crystal Bases

We realize the crystal associated to the quantized enveloping algebras with a symmetric generalized Cartan matrix as a set of Lagrangian subvarieties of the cotangent bundle of the quiver variety. As a by-product, we give a counterexample to the conjecture of Kazhdan--Lusztig on the irreducibility of the characteristic variety of the intersection cohomology sheaves associated with the Schubert cells of type A and also to the similar problem asked by Lusztig on the characteristic variety of the perverse sheaves corresponding to canonical bases.

Braided modules and reflection equations

We introduce a representation theory of q-Lie algebras defined earlier in \cite{DG1}, \cite{DG2}, formulated in terms of braided modules. We also discuss other ways to define Lie algebra-like objects related to quantum groups, in particular, those based on the so-called reflection equations. We also investigate the truncated tensor product of braided modules.

Generalization and Exact Deformations of Quantum Groups

A large family of "standard" coboundary Hopf algebras is investigated. The existence of a universal R-matrix is demonstrated for the case when the parameters are in general position. Algebraic surfaces in parameter space are characterized by the appearance of certain ideals; in this case the universal R-matrix exists on the associated algebraic quotient. In special cases the quotient is a "standard" quantum group; all familiar quantum groups including twisted ones are obtained in this way. In other special cases one finds new types of coboundary bi-algebras. The "standard" universal R-matrix is shown to be the unique solution of a very simple, linear recursion relation. The classical limit is obtained in the case of quantized Kac-Moody algebras of finite and affine type. Returning to the general case, we study deformations of the standard R-matrix and the associated Hopf algebras. A preliminary investigation of the first order deformations uncovers a class of deformations that incompasses the quantization of all Kac-Moody algebras of finite and affine type. The corresponding exact deformations are described as generalized twists, $ R_ε= (F^t)^{-1}RF$, where $R$ is the standard R-matrix and the cocycle $F$ (a power series in the deformation parameter $ε$) is the solution of a linear recursion relation of the same type as that which determines $R$. Included here is the universal R-matrix for the elliptic quantum groups associated with $sl(n)$, a big surprise! Specializing again, to the case of quantized Kac-Moody algebras, and taking the classical limit of these esoteric quantum groups, one re-discovers all the trigonometric and elliptic r-matrices of Belavin and Drinfeld. The formulas obtained here are easier to use than the original ones, and the structure of the space of classical r-matrices is more transparent. The r-matrices obtained here are more general in that they are defined on the full Kac-Moody algebras, the central extensions of the loop groups.

Polynomial Invariants are Polynomial

We show that (as conjectured by Lin and Wang) when a Vassiliev invariant of type $m$ is evaluated on a knot projection having $n$ crossings, the result is bounded by a constant times $n^m$. Thus the well known analogy between Vassiliev invariants and polynomials justifies (well, at least {\em explains}) the odd title of this note.

Character States and Generator Matrix Elements for $Sp(4) \supset SU(2) \times U(1)$: Generic Representation

A new set of polynomial states (to be called character states) are derived for $Sp(4)$ reduced to its $SU(2) \times U(1)$ subgroup, and the relevant generator matrix elements are evaluated for generic representations $(a,b)$ of $Sp(4)$. (The degenerate representations $(a,0)$ and $(0,b)$ were treated in our previous work and are also given in this paper). The group--subgroup in question is that of the seniority model of nuclear physics.

Quantization of function algebras on semisimple orbits in $\g^*$

In this paper we describe a multiparameter deformation of the function algebra of a semisimple coadjoint orbit. In the first section we use the representation of the Lie algebra on a generalized Verma module to quantize the Kirillov bracket on the family of semisimple coadjoint orbits of a given orbit type. In the second section we extend this construction to define a deformation in the category of representations of the quantized enveloping algebra. In an earlier paper we used cohomological methods to prove the existence of a two parameter family quantizing a compatible pair of Poisson brackets on any symmetric coadjoint orbit. This paper gives a more explicit algebraic construction which includes more general orbit types and which we prove to be flat in all parameters.
