Optical phonons along the c axis of YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}, for x=0.5 -> 0.95

The c-axis polarized phonon spectra of single crystals of YBCO_{6+x} have been measured for the doping range x=0.5 -> 0.95, between 10 K and 300 K. The low background electronic conductivity, determined by Kramers-Kronig analysis of the reflectance, leads to a rich phonon structure. With decreased doping the five normally-active B_{1u} modes broaden and the high-frequency apical oxygen mode splits into two components. We associate the higher of these with the two-fold coordinated copper-oxygen sticks. The 155 cm^{-1} low-frequency mode, which involves the apical and chain-oxygens, splits into at least three components with decreasing doping. Some phonon anomalies which occur near T_c in the highly-doped material occur well above T_c in the oxygen-reduced systems. An unusual broad phonon band develops in the normal state at approx 400 cm^{-1}, which becomes more intense at low doping and low temperatures, borrowing oscillator strength from apical and plane oxygen modes resulting in a major transformation of the phonon spectrum below approx 150 K.

PHASE TRANSITION OF N-COMPONENT SUPERCONDUCTORS

We investigate the phase transition in the three-dimensional abelian Higgs model for N complex scalar fields, using the gauge-invariant average action Γ_{k}. The dependence of Γ_{k} on the effective infra-red cut-off k is described by a non-perturbative flow equation. The transition turns out to be first- or second-order, depending on the ratio between scalar and gauge coupling. We look at the fixed points of the theory for various N and compute the critical exponents of the model. Comparison with results from the ε-expansion shows a rather poor convergence for ε=1 even for large N. This is in contrast to the surprisingly good results of the ε-expansion for pure scalar theories. Our results suggest the existence of a parameter range with a second-order transition for all N, including the case of the superconductor phase transition for N=1.

Adiabatic Effective Action for Vortices in Neutral and Charged Superfluids

Adiabatic effective action for vortices in neutral and charged superfluids at zero temperature are calculated using the topological Landau-Ginzburg theory recently proposed by Hatsuda, Yahikozawa, Ao and Thouless, and vortex dynamics are examined. The Berry phase term arising in the effective action naturally yields the Magnus force in both neutral and charged superfluids. It is shown that in neutral superfluid there is only one degree of freedom, namely the center of vorticities, and the vortex energy is proportinal to the sum of all vorticities so that it is finite only for the vanishing total vorticity of the system. On the other hand the effective mass and the vortex energy for a vortex in charged superfluids are defined individually as expected. The effects of the vortex core on these quantities are also estimated. The possible depinning scenario which is governed by the Magnus force and the inertial mass is also discussed.

Fundamental properties of a vortex in a d-wave superconductor

The vortex core structure in a d-wave superconductor is analyzed on the basis of the quasi-classical Eilenberger theory beyond the Ginzburg-Landau framework. The current and magnetic field distributions around an isolated vortex break circular symmetry seen in s-wave pairing and show four-fold symmetry, reflecting the internal degrees of freedom in d-wave pairing, {\it i.e.} $\hat k_x^2-\hat k_y^2$ in reciprocal space through the low lying quasi-particle excitations. The peculiar orientation of the flux line lattice observed recently in a cuprate is argued in light of the present theory.

Superconductivity of Quasi-One-Dimensional Electrons in Strong Magnetic Field

The superconductivity of quasi-one-dimensional electrons in the magnetic field is studied. The system is described as the one-dimensional electrons with no frustration due to the magnetic field. The interaction is assumed to be attractive between electrons in the nearest chains, which corresponds to the lines of nodes of the energy gap in the absence of the magnetic field. The effective interaction depends on the magnetic field and the transverse momentum. As the magnetic field becomes strong, the transition temperature of the spin-triplet superconductivity oscillates, while that of the spin-singlet increases monotonically.

Density of States and NMR Relaxation Rate in Anisotropic Superconductivity with Intersecting Line Nodes

We show that the density of states in an anisotropic superconductor with intersecting line nodes in the gap function is proportional to $E log (αΔ_0 /E)$ for $|E| << Δ_0$, where $Δ_0$ is the maximum value of the gap function and $α$ is constant, while it is proportional to $E$ if the line nodes do not intersect. As a result, a logarithmic correction appears in the temperature dependence of the NMR relaxation rate and the specific heat, which can be observed experimentally. By comparing with those for the heavy fermion superconductors, we can obtain information about the symmetry of the gap function.

Quantum Resistive Transition in Type II Superconductors under Magnetic Field

It is shown that, within a Ginzburg-Landau (GL) formalism, the superconducting fluctuation is insulating at zero temperature even if the fluctuation dynamics is metallic (dissipative). Based on this fact, the low temperature behavior of the $H_{c2}$-line and the resistivity curves near a zero temperature transition are discussed. In particular, it is pointed out that the neglect of quantum fluctuations in data analysis of the dc resistivity may lead to an under-estimation of the $H_{c2}$ values near zero temperature.

Ginzburg Landau theory for d-wave pairing and fourfold symmetric vortex core structure

The Ginzburg Landau theory for d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductors is constructed, by starting from the Gor'kov equation with including correction terms up to the next order of ln(T_c/T). Some of the non-local correction terms are found to break the cylindrical symmetry and lead to the fourfold symmetric core structure, reflecting the internal degree of freedom in the pair potential. Using this extended Ginzburg Landau theory, we investigate the fourfold symmetric structure of the pair potential, current and magnetic field around an isolated single vortex, and clarify concretely how the vortex core structure deviates from the cylindrical symmetry in the d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductors.

Theoretical analysis of a reported weak gravitational shielding effect

Under special conditions (Meissner-effect levitation in a high frequency magnetic field and rapid rotation) a disk of high-$T_c$ superconducting material has recently been found to produce a weak shielding of the gravitational field. We show that this phenomenon has no explanation in the standard gravity theories, except possibly in the non-perturbative Euclidean quantum theory.

Peak Effect in Superconductors: Melting of Larkin Domains

Motivated by the recent observations of the peak effect in high-$T_c$ YBCO superconductors, we reexamine the origin of this unusual phenomenon. We show that the mechanism based on the $k$-dependence (nonlocality) of the vortex-lattice tilt modulus $C_{44}({\bf k})$ cannot account for the essential feature of the peak effect. We propose a scenario in which the peak effect is related to the melting of Larkin domains. In our model, the rise of critical current with increasing temperature is a result of a crossover from the Larkin pinning length to the length scale set by thermally excited free dislocations.

Self-Organized Criticality Effect on Stability: Magneto-Thermal Oscillations in a Granular YBCO Superconductor

We show that the self-organized criticality of the Bean's state in each of the grains of a granular superconductor results in magneto-thermal oscillations preceding a series of subsequent flux jumps. We find that the frequency of these oscillations is proportional to the external magnetic field sweep rate and is inversely proportional to the square root of the heat capacity. We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically the universality of this dependence that is mainly influenced by the granularity of the superconductor.

Renormalization group analysis of electrons near a Van Hove singularity.

A model of interacting two dimensional electrons near a Van Hove singularity is studied, using renormalization group techniques. In hole doped systems, the chemical potential is found to be pinned near the singularity, when the electron-electron interactions are repulsive. The RG treatment of the leading divergences appearing in perturbation theory give rise to marginal behavior and anisotropic superconductivity.

Transmission Electron Study of Heteroepitaxial Growth in the BiSrCaCuO System

Films of Bi$\rm _2$Sr$\rm _2$CaCu$\rm _2$O$\rm _8$ and Bi$\rm _2$Sr$\rm _2$CuO$\rm _6$ have been grown using Atomic-Layer-by-Layer Molecular Beam Epitaxy (ALL-MBE) on lattice-matched substrates. These materials have been combined with layers of closely-related metastable compounds like Bi$\rm _2$Sr$\rm _2$Ca$\rm _7$Cu$\rm _8$O$\rm _{20}$ (2278) and rare-earth-doped compounds like Bi$\rm _2$Sr$\rm _2$Dy$\rm _x$Ca$\rm _{1-x}$Cu$\rm _2$O$\rm _8$ (Dy:2212) to form heterostructures with unique superconducting properties, including superconductor/insulator multilayers and tunnel junctions. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has been used to study the morphology and microstructure of these heterostructures. These TEM studies shed light on the physical properties of the films, and give insight into the growth mode of highly anisotropic solids like Bi$\rm _2$Sr$\rm _2$CaCu$\rm _2$O$\rm _8$.
