The enumerative geometry of K3 surfaces and modular forms

We prove the conjectures of Yau-Zaslow and Gottsche concerning the number curves on K3 surfaces. Specifically, let X be a K3 surface and C be a holomorphic curve in X representing a primitive homology class. We count the number of curves of geometric genus g with n nodes passing through g generic points in X in the linear system |C| for any g and n satisfying C^2=2g+2n-2. When g=0, this coincides with the enumerative problem studied by Yau and Zaslow who obtained a conjectural generating function for the numbers. Recently, Gottsche has generalized their conjecture to arbitrary g in terms of quasi-modular forms. We prove these formulas using Gromov-Witten invariants for families, a degeneration argument, and an obstruction bundle computation. Our methods also apply to P^2 blown up at 9 points where we show that the ordinary Gromov-Witten invariants of genus g constrained to g points are also given in terms of quasi-modular forms.

On the classification of hyperbolic root systems of the rank three. Part I

It was recently understood that from the point of view of automorphic Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebras and some aspects of Mirror Symmetry, interesting hyperbolic root systems should have restricted arithmetic type and a generalized lattice Weyl vector. One can consider hyperbolic root systems with these properties as an appropriate hyperbolic analog of the classical finite and affine root systems. This series of papers is devoted to classification of hyperbolic root systems of restricted arithmetic type and with a generalized lattice Weyl vector $ρ$, having the rank 3 (it is the first non-trivial rank). In the Part I we announce classification of the maximal hyperbolic root systems of elliptic (i.e. $ρ^2 >0$) and parabolic (i.e. $ρ^2=0$) type, having the rank 3. We give sketch of the proof. Details of the proof and further results (non-maximal cases) will be given in Part II. Classification for hyperbolic type (i.e. $ρ^2<0$) and applications will be considered in Part III.

Tamagawa numbers of polarized algebraic varieties

Let ${\cal L} = (L, \| \cdot \|_v)$ be an ample metrized invertible sheaf on a smooth quasi-projective algebraic variety $V$ defined over a number field. Denote by $N(V,{\cal L},B)$ the number of rational points in $V$ having ${\cal L}$-height $\leq B$. We consider the problem of a geometric and arithmetic interpretation of the asymptotic for $N(V,{\cal L},B)$ as $B \to \infty$ in connection with recent conjectures of Fujita concerning the Minimal Model Program for polarized algebraic varieties. We introduce the notions of ${\cal L}$-primitive varieties and ${\cal L}$-primitive fibrations. For ${\cal L}$-primitive varieties $V$ over $F$ we propose a method to define an adelic Tamagawa number $τ_{\cal L}(V)$ which is a generalization of the Tamagawa number $τ(V)$ introduced by Peyre for smooth Fano varieties. Our method allows us to construct Tamagawa numbers for $Q$-Fano varieties with at worst canonical singularities. In a series of examples of smooth polarized varieties and singular Fano varieties we show that our Tamagawa numbers express the dependence of the asymptotic of $N(V,{\cal L},B)$ on the choice of $v$-adic metrics on ${\cal L}$.

Toric varieties and minimal complexes

We translate the equivariant decomposition theorem (in the case of a proper morphism of toric varieties) in to the language of combinatorially defined ``shifted minimal complexes''.

Quantum Hyperplane Section Theorem For Homogeneous Spaces

We formulated a mirror-free approach to the mirror conjecture, namely, quantum hyperplane section conjecture, and proved it in the case of nonnegative complete intersections in homogeneous manifolds. For the proof we followed the scheme of Givental's proof of a mirror theorem for toric complete intersections.

The arithmetic-geometric mean and isogenies for curves of higher genus

Computation of Gauss's arithmetic-geometric mean involves iteration of a simple step, whose algebro-geometric interpretation is the construction of an elliptic curve isogenous to a given one, specifically one whose period is double the original period. A higher genus analogue should involve the explicit construction of a curve whose jacobian is isogenous to the jacobian of a given curve. The doubling of the period matrix means that the kernel of the isogeny should be a lagrangian subgroup of the group of points of order 2 in the jacobian. In genus 2 such a construction was given classically by Humbert and was studied more recently by Bost and Mestre. In this article we give such a construction for general curves of genus 3. We also give a similar but simpler construction for hyperelliptic curves of genus 3. We show that the hyperelliptic construction is a degeneration of the general one, and we prove that the kernel of the induced isogeny on jacobians is a lagrangian subgroup of the points of order 2. We show that for g at least 4 no similar construction exists, and we also reinterpret the genus 2 case in our setup. Our construction of these correspondences uses the bigonal and the trigonal constructions, familiar in the theory of Prym varieties.

Zero-pole interpolation for matrix meromorphic functions on a compact Riemann surface, and a matrix Fay trisecant identity

This paper presents a new approach to constructing a meromorphic bundle map between flat vector bundles over a compact Riemann surface having a prescribed Weil divisor (i.e., having prescribed zeros and poles with directional as well as multiplicity information included in the vector case). This new formalism unifies the earlier approach of Ball-Clancey (in the setting of trivial bundles over an abstract Riemann surface) with an earlier approach of the authors (where the Riemann surface was assumed to be the normalizing Riemann surface for an algebraic curve embedded in ${\bold C}^2$ with determinantal representation, and the vector bundles were assumed to be presented as the kernels of linear matrix pencils). The main tool is a version of the Cauchy kernel appropriate for flat vector bundles over the Riemann surface. Our formula for the interpolating bundle map (in the special case of a single zero and a single pole) can be viewed as a generalization of the Fay trisecant identity from the usual line bundle case to the vector bundle case in terms of Cauchy kernels. In particular we obtain a new proof of the Fay trisecant identity.

The L^2 dbar method, weak Lefschetz theorems, and the topology of Kahler manifolds

A new approach to Nori's weak Lefschetz theorem is described. The new approach, which involves the dbar-method, avoids moving arguments and gives much stronger results. In particular, it is proved that if X and Y are connected smooth projective varieties of positive dimension and f is a holomorphic immersion of Y into X with ample normal bundle, then the image of the fundamental group of Y in that of X is of finite index. This result is obtained as a consequence of a direct generalization of Nori's theorem. The second part concerns a new approach to the theorem of Burns which states that a quotient of the unit ball in complex Euclidean space (of dimension at least 3) by a discrete group of automorphisms which has a strongly pseudoconvex boundary component has only finitely many ends. The following generalization is obtained. If a complete Hermitian manifold X of dimension at least 3 has a strongly pseudoconvex end E and the Ricci curvature of X is bounded above by a negative constant, then, away from E, X has finite volume.

A morphism of intersection homology induced by an algebraic map

Let $f:X-->Y$ be a map of algebraic varieties. Barthel, Brasselet, Fieseler, Gabber and Kaup have shown that there exists a homomorphism of intersection homology groups $f^*:IH^*(Y)-->IH^*(X)$ compatible with the induced homomorphism on cohomology. The crucial point in the argument is reduction to the finite characteristic. We give an alternative and short proof of the existence of a homomorphism $f^*$. Our construction is an easy application of the Decomposition Theorem.

Toric Degenerations of Fano Varieties and Constructing Mirror Manifolds

For an arbitrary smooth n-dimensional Fano variety $X$ we introduce the notion of a small toric degeneration. Using small toric degenerations of Fano n-folds $X$, we propose a general method for constructing mirrors of Calabi-Yau complete intersections in $X$. Our mirror construction is based on a generalized monomial-divisor mirror correspondence which can be used for computing Gromov-Witten invariants of rational curves via specializations of GKZ-hypergeometric series.

Moduli Spaces of Stable Polygons and Symplectic Structures on $\bar{M}_{0,n}$

In this paper, certain natural and elementary polygonal objects in Euclidean space, {\it the stable polygons}, are introduced, and the novel moduli spaces ${\bfmit M}_{{\bf r}, ε}$ of stable polygons are constructed as complex analytic spaces. Quite unexpectedly, these new moduli spaces are shown to be projective and isomorphic to the moduli space $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$ of the Deligne-Mumford stable curves of genus 0. Further, built into the structures of stable polygons are some natural data leading toward to a family of (classes of) symplectic (Kähler) forms. To some degree, ${\bfmit M}_{{\bf r}, ε}$ may be considered as symplectic counterparts of $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$ and Kapranov's Chow quotient construction of $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$. All these together brings up a new tool to study the Kähler topology of $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$.

Cycles algébriques sur les surfaces K3 réelles

For a real algebraic K3 surface $X(R)$, we give all possible values of the dimension $h^1_{alg}(X(R)$ of the group $\H^1_{alg}(X(R),Z/2)$ of algebraic cycles of $X(R)$. In particular, we prove that if $X(R)$ is not an M-surface, $X(R)$ can always be deformed to some $X'(R)$ with $h^1_{alg}(X'(R))=\dim\H^1(X(R),Z/2)$. Furthermore, we obtain that in certain moduli space of real algebraic K3 surfaces, the collection of real isomorphism classes of K3 surfaces $X(R)$ such that $h^1_{alg}(X(R))$is greater or equal than $k$ is a countable union of subspaces of dimension $20-k$.

Deforming Calabi-Yau Threefolds

This paper first generalises the Bogomolov-Tian-Todorov unobstructedness theorem to the case of Calabi-Yau threefolds with canonical singularities. The deformation space of such a Calabi-Yau threefold is no longer smooth, but the general principle is that the obstructions to deforming such a threefold are precisely the obstructions to deforming the singularities of the threefold. Secondly, these results are applied to smoothing singular Calabi-Yau threefolds with crepant resolutions. Any such Calabi-Yau threefold with isolated complete intersection singularities which are not ordinary double points is smoothable. A Calabi-Yau threefold with non-complete intersection isolated singularities is proved to be smoothable under much stronger hypotheses.

Algebraic cycles and topology of real Enriques surfaces

For a real Enriques surface Y we prove that every homology class in H_1(Y(R), Z/2) can be represented by a real algebraic curve if and only if all connected components of Y(R) are orientable. Furthermore, we give a characterization of real Enriques surfaces which are Galois-Maximal and/or Z-Galois-Maximal and we determine the Brauer group of any real Enriques surface.
