A small cosmological constant from the modified Brans-Dicke theory - an interplay between different energy scales

In this paper we discuss a model in which the energy density, corresponding to the effective cosmological constant, after the $SU(2)\times U(1)$ symmetry breaking appears to be of the desired order of $10^{-48}÷10^{-47} GeV^{4}$. The model contain two different energy scales, one of which is associated with the Higgs's vacuum expectation value. Another scale is of the order of $10^{21}GeV$ and defines the vacuum expectation value of the Brans-Dicke scalar field, non-minimally coupled to gravity, and sets the value of the Planck mass. Other (dimensionless) parameters are assumed not to contain hierarchical differences. The model is devoid of any fine-tuning and gives a small value of the effective cosmological constant even if the real "bare" cosmological constant is quite large.

The curvature homogeneity bound for Lorentzian four-manifolds

We prove that a four-dimensional Lorentzian manifold that is curvature homogeneous of order 3, or CH_3 for short, is necessarily locally homogeneous. We also exhibit and classify four-dimensional Lorentzian, CH_2 manifolds that are not homogeneous. The resulting metrics belong to the class of null electromagnetic radiation, type N solutions on an anti-de Sitter background. These findings prove that the four-dimensional Lorentzian Singer number $k_{1,3}=3$, falsifying some recent conjectures by Gilkey. We also prove that invariant classification for these proper CH_2 solutions requires $\nabla^{(7)}R$, and that these are the unique metrics requiring the seventh order.

Blowup/scattering alternative for a discrete family of static critical solutions with various number of unstable eigenmodes

Decay of regular static spherically symmetric solutions in the SU(2) Yang-Mills-dilaton (YMd) system of equations under the independent excitation of their unstable eigenmodes has been studied self-consistently in the nonlinear regime. The considered regular YMd solutions form a discrete family and can be parametrised by the number $N=1,2,3,4...$ of their unstable eigenmodes in linear approximation. We have obtained strong numerical evidences in favour of the following statements: i) all static YMd solutions are distinct local threshold configurations, separating blowup and scattering solutions; ii) the main unstable eigenmodes are only those responsible for the blowup/scattering alternative; iii) excitation of higher unstable eigenmodes always leads to finite-time blowup; iv) the decay of the lowest N=1 static YMd solution via excitation of its unique unstable mode is an exceptional case because the resulting waves propagate as a whole without energy dispersion revealing features peculiar to solitons. Applications of the obtained results to Type-I gravitational collapse of massless fields are briefly discussed.

Coframe geometry and gravity

The possible extensions of GR for description of fermions on a curved space, for supergravity and for loop quantum gravity require a richer set of 16 independent variables. These variables can be assembled in a coframe field, i.e., a local set of four linearly independent 1-forms. In the ordinary formulation, the coframe gravity does not have any connection to a specific geometry even being constructed from the geometrical meaningful objects. A geometrization of the coframe gravity is an aim of this paper. We construct a complete class of the coframe connections which are linear in the first order derivatives of the coframe field on an $n$ dimensional manifolds with and without a metric. The subclasses of the torsion-free, metric-compatible and flat connections are derived. We also study the behavior of the geometrical structures under local transformations of the coframe. The remarkable fact is an existence of a subclass of connections which are invariant when the infinitesimal transformations satisfy the Maxwell-like system of equations. In the framework of the coframe geometry construction, we propose a geometrical action for the coframe gravity. It is similar to the Einstein-Hilbert action of GR, but the scalar curvature is constructed from the general coframe connection. We show that this geometric Lagrangian is equivalent to the coframe Lagrangian up to a total derivative term. Moreover there is a family of coframe connections which Lagrangian does not include the higher order terms at all. In this case, the equivalence is complete.

The number of dimensional fundamental constants

We revisit, qualify, and objectively resolve the seemingly controversial question about what is the number of dimensional fundamental constants in Nature. For this purpose, we only assume that all we can directly measure are space and time intervals, and that this is enough to evaluate any physical observable. We conclude that the number of dimensional fundamental constants is two. We emphasize that this is an objective result rather than a "philosophical opinion", and we let it clear how it could be refuted in order to prove us wrong. Our conclusion coincides with Veneziano's string-theoretical one but our arguments are not based on any particular theory. As a result, this implies that one of the three usually considered fundamental constants "G", "c" or "h" can be eliminated and we show explicitly how this can be accomplished.

Localization and the interface between quantum mechanics, quantum field theory and quantum gravity

We show that there are significant conceptual differences between QM and QFT which make it difficult to view the latter as just a relativistic extension of the principles of QM. At the root of this is a fundamental distinction between Born-localization in QM (which in the relativistic context changes its name to Newton-Wigner localization) and modular localization which is the localization underlying QFT, after one liberates it from its standard presentation in terms of field coordinates. The first comes with a probability notion and projection operators, whereas the latter describes causal propagation in QFT and leads to thermal aspects of locally reduced finite energy states. The Born-Newton-Wigner localization in QFT is only applicable asymptotically and the covariant correlation between asymptotic in and out localization projectors is the basis of the existence of an invariant scattering matrix. Taking these significant differences serious has not only repercussions for the philosophy of science, but also leads to a new structural properties as a consequence of vacuum polarization: the area law for localization entropy near the the causal localization horizon and a more realistic cutoff independent setting for the cosmological vacuum energy density which is compatible with local covariance. The article presents some observations about the interface between QFT in CST and QG.

A Kerr interior

An exact solution of the Einstein field equations is proposed which represents a differentially rotating fluid. As this solution matches the exterior Kerr solution and reduces to the Schwarzschild interior solution by setting the rotational parameter to zero, it could serve as Kerr interior.

Kerr interior surfaces

A recently found interior for the Kerr metric is re-investigated by means of geometrical methods. A surface with nonholonomicity is matched to the surface of the exterior solution.

Definition and stability of Lorentzian manifolds with distributional curvature

Following Geroch, Traschen, Mars and Senovilla, we consider Lorentzian manifolds with distributional curvature tensor. Such manifolds represent spacetimes of general relativity that possibly contain gravitational waves, shock waves, and other singular patterns. We aim here at providing a comprehensive and geometric (i.e., coordinate-free) framework. First, we determine the minimal assumptions required on the metric tensor in order to give a rigorous meaning to the spacetime curvature within the framework of distribution theory. This leads us to a direct derivation of the jump relations associated with singular parts of connection and curvature operators. Second, we investigate the induced geometry on a hypersurface with general signature, and we determine the minimal assumptions required to define, in the sense of distributions, the curvature tensors and the second fundamental form of the hypersurface and to establish the Gauss-Codazzi equations.

Structural and Dynamical Aspects of the AdS/CFT Correspondence: a Rigorous Approach

We elaborate a detailed study of certain aspects of (a version of) the AdS/CFT correspondence, conjectured by Maldacena and Witten, between quantum field theories in a gravitational background given by an asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AAdS) spacetime, and conformally covariant quantum field theories in the latter's conformal infinity (in the sense of Penrose), aspects such that: (a) are independent from (the pair of) specific models in Quantum Field Theory, and (b) susceptible to a recast in a mathematically rigorous mould. We adopt as a starting point the theorem demonstrated by Rehren in the context of Local Quantum Physics (also known as Algebraic Quantum Field Theory) in anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes, called algebraic holography or Rehren duality. The main body of the present work consists in extending Rehren's result to a reasonably general class of d-dimensional AAdS spacetimes (d>3), scrutinizing how the properties of such an extension are weakened and/or modified as compared to AdS spacetime, and probing how non-trivial gravitational effects manifest themselves in the conformal infinity's quantum theory. The language employed for the quantum theories relevant for our generalization of Rehren duality follows the functorial formulation of Local Quantum Physics due to Brunetti, Fredenhagen and Verch, extended afterwards by Sommer in order to incorporate boundary conditions.

Analogue spacetimes: Toy models for "quantum gravity''

Why are "analogue spacetimes'' interesting? For the purposes of this workshop the answer is simple: Analogue spacetimes provide one with physically well-defined and physically well-understood concrete models of many of the phenomena that seem to be part of the yet incomplete theory of "quantum gravity'', or more accessibly, "quantum gravity phenomenology''. Indeed "analogue spacetimes'' provide one with concrete models of "emergence'' (whereby the effective low-energy theory can be radically different from the high-energy microphysics). They also provide many concrete and controlled models of "Lorentz symmetry breaking'', and extensions of the usual notions of pseudo-Riemannian geometry such as "rainbow spacetimes'', and pseudo-Finsler geometries, and more. I will provide an overview of the key items of "unusual physics'' that arise in analogue spacetimes, and argue that they provide us with hints of what we should be looking for in any putative theory of "quantum gravity''. For example: The dispersion relations that naturally arise in the known emergent/analogue spacetimes typically violate analogue Lorentz invariance at high energy, but do not do so in completely arbitrary manner. This suggests that a search for arbitrary violations of Lorentz invariance is possibly overkill: There are a number of natural and physically well-motivated restrictions one can put on emergent/ analogue dispersion relations, considerably reducing the plausible parameter space.

The Big Bang quantum cosmology: The matter-energy production epoch

The exactly solvable quantum model of the homogeneous, isotropic and closed universe in the matter-energy production epoch is considered. It is assumed that the universe is originally filled with a uniform scalar field and a perfect fluid which defines a reference frame. The stationary state spectrum and the wave functions of the quantum universe are calculated. In this model the matter-energy in the universe has a component in the form of a condensate of massive zero-momentum excitation quanta of oscillations of primordial scalar field. The mean value of the scale factor of the universe in a given state is connected with the mass of a condensate by a linear relation. The nucleation rate of the universe from the initial cosmological singularity point is calculated. It is demonstrated that the process of nucleation of the universe can have an exponential (explosive) nature. The evolution of the universe is described as transitions with non-zero probabilities between the states of the universe with different masses of a condensate.

Accelerating Quantum Universe

The origin of negative pressure fluid (the dark energy) is investigated in the quantum model of the homogeneous, isotropic and closed universe filled with a uniform scalar field and a perfect fluid which defines a reference frame. The equations of the model are reduced to the form which allows a direct comparison between them and the equations of the Einsteinian classical theory of gravity. It is shown that quantized scalar field has a form of a condensate which behaves as an antigravitating medium. The theory predicts an accelerating expansion of the universe even if the vacuum energy density vanishes. An antigravitating effect of a condensate has a purely quantum nature. It is shown that the universe with the parameters close to the Planck ones can go through the period of exponential expansion. The conditions under which in semi-classical approximation the universe looks effectively like spatially flat with negative deceleration parameter are determined. The reduction to the standard model of classical cosmology is discussed.

Some remarks on Causality Theory and Variational Methods in Lorentzian manifolds

In this conference published in 1997 some problems on the geodesics of a Lorentzian manifold concerning causality and infinite-dimensional variational methods, are pointed out. Even though a big progress on many of these questions have been carried out since then, some computations in this paper may be useful and have not been published elsewhere. Among them, for example, the following one (Section 3). Consider a spacetime which can be written globally as a product $R x M$, such that the natural vector field associated to the coordinate $t$ in $R$ is timelike. When is this spacetime globally hyperbolic with Cauchy hypersurfaces the slices $t=$ constant?

Abilities of multidimensional gravity

We show that a number of problems of modern cosmology may be addressed and solved in the framework of multidimensional gravity with high-order curvature invariants, without invoking other fields. As applications of this approach, we mention primordial inflation and particle production after it; description of the modern accelerated stage of the Universe with stable compact extra dimensions; construction of asymmetric thick brane-world models.

Energy, angular momentum, superenergy and angular supermomentum in conformal frames

We find the rules of the conformal transformation for the energetic quantities such as the Einstein energy-momentum complex, the Bergmann-Thomson angular momentum complex, the superenergy tensor, and the angular supermomentum tensor of gravitation and matter. We show that the conformal transformation rules for the matter parts of both the Einstein complex and the Bergmann-Thomson complex are fairly simple, while the transformation rules for their gravitational parts are more complicated. We also find that the transformational rules of the superenergy tensor of matter and the superenergy tensor of gravity are quite complicated except for the case of a pure gravity. In such a special case the superenergy density as well as the sum of the superenergy density and the matter energy density are invariants of the conformal transformation. Besides, in that case, a conformal invariant is also the Bel-Robinson tensor which is a part of the superenergy tensor. As for the angular supermomentum tensor of gravity - it emerges that its transformational rule even for a pure gravity is quite complicated but this is not the case for the angular supermomentum tensor of matter. Having investigated some technicalities of the conformal transformations, we also find the conformal transformation rule for the curvature invariants and, in particular, for the Gauss-Bonnet invariant in a spacetime of arbitrary dimension.
