Rational curves on hypersurfaces of low degree, II

This is a continuation of "Rational curves on hypersurfaces of low degree", math.AG/0203088. We prove that if d^2+d+1 < n and d > 2, then for a general hypersurface X_d in P^n of degree d, for each degree e the space of rational curves of degree e on X is itself a rationally connected variety.

The equivariant Toda lattice, II

Applying recent ideas of Carlet, Dubrovin and Zhang (to appear), who, following a suggestion of Eguchi and Yang (hep-th/9407134), study the logarithm of the Lax operator of the Toda lattice, we show that the equivariant Toda lattice introduced in math.AG/0207025 is a Hamiltonian integrable system.

Triplets spectraux en geometrie d'Arakelov

This note is a brief overview of the results of math.AG/0205306. We use Connes' theory of spectral triples to provide a connection between Manin's model of the dual graph of the fiber at infinity of an Arakelov surface and the cohomology of the mapping cone of the local monodromy.

A_{n-1} singularities and nKdV hierarchies

According to a conjecture of E. Witten proved by M. Kontsevich, a certain generating function for intersection indices on the Deligne -- Mumford moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces coincides with a certain tau-function of the KdV hierarchy. The generating function is naturally generalized under the name the {\em total descendent potential} in the theory of Gromov -- Witten invariants of symplectic manifolds. The papers arXiv: math.AG/0108100 and arXive: math.DG/0108160 contain two equivalent constructions, motivated by some results in Gromov -- Witten theory, which associate a total descendent potential to any semisimple Frobenius structure. In this paper, we prove that in the case of K.Saito's Frobenius structure on the miniversal deformation of the $A_{n-1}$-singularity, the total descendent potential is a tau-function of the $n$KdV hierarchy. We derive this result from a more general construction for solutions of the $n$KdV hierarchy from $n-1$ solutions of the KdV hierarchy.

Remarks on algebraic fiber spaces

In this paper, we collect basic properties of the Albanese dimension and explain how to generalize the main theorem of [F2](math.AG/0204262). This paper is a supplement and a generalization of [F2]. We also prove an inequality of irregularities for algebraic fiber spaces in the appendix, which is an exposition of Fujita-Kawamata's semi-positivity theorem.

Discreteness of minimal models of Kodaira dimension zero and subvarieties of moduli stacks

We extend some of the results obtained for subvarieties of the moduli stack of canonically polarized manifolds in "Base spaces of non-isotrivial families of smooth minimal models" (math.AG/0103122) to moduli of polarized minimal models of Kodaira dimension zero. To this aim we first show that for those manifolds there are no non isotrivial families of minimal models, which are birationally isotrivial. In the last chapter, we discuss the rigidity of curves in the moduli stack of canonically polarized manifolds and of polarized minimal models of Kodaira dimension zero.

Witten's top Chern class via K-theory

The Witten top Chern class is the crucial cohomology class needed to state a conjecture by Witten relating the Gelfand-Dikii hierarchies to higher spin curves. In math.AG/0011032, Polishchuk and Vaintrob provide an algebraic construction of such a class. We present a more straightforward construction via K-theory. In this way we short-circuit the passage through bivariant intersection theory and the use of MacPherson's graph construction. Furthermore, we show that the Witten top Chern class admits a natural lifting to the K-theory ring.

Patchworking singular algebraic curves, non-Archimedean amoebas and enumerative geometry

We prove a new patchworking theorem for singular algebraic curves, which states the following. Given a complex toric threefold $Y$ which fibers over ${\mathbb C}$ with a reduced reducible zero fiber $Y_0$ and other fibers $Y_t$ smooth, and given a reduced curve $C_0\subset Y_0$, the theorem provides a sufficient condition for the existence of a one-parametric family of curves $C_t\subset Y_t$, which induces an equisingular deformation for some singular points of $C_0$ and certain prescribed deformations for the other singularities. As application we give a comment on a recent theorem by G. Mikhalkin on enumeration of nodal curves on toric surfaces via non-Archimedean amoebas [arXiv:math.AG/0209253]. Namely, using our patchworking theorem, we establish link between nodal curves over the field of complex Puiseux series and their non-Archimedean amoebas, what has been done by Mikhalkin in a different way. We discuss also the case of curves with a cusp as well as real nodal curves.

Irreducibility of Equisingular Families of Curves - Improved Conditions

In math.AG/0108089 we gave sufficient conditions for the irreducibility of the family V of irreducible curves in the linear system |D| with precisely r singular points of topological respectively analytical types S1,...,Sr on several classes of smooth projective surfaces S. The conditions where of the form (tau'(S1)+2)^2 +...+ (tau'(Sr)+2)^2 < c*(D-K)^2, where tau' is some invariant of singularity types, K is the canonical divisor of S and c is some constant. In the present paper we improve this condition, that is the constant c, by a factor 9.

Sur le lemme fondamental pour les groupes unitaires

Assuming the purity conjecture for the affine Springer fibers which has been formulated by Goresky, Kottwitz and MacPherson, we prove a geometric analog of the fundamental lemma for unitary groups. Our approach is similar to the one of Goresky, Kottwitz and MacPherson. Our main new ingredient is the link between affine Springer fibers and compactified Jacobians which is described in math.AG/0204109.

Segal topoi and stacks over Segal categories

In math.AG/0207028 we began the study of higher sheaf theory (i.e. stacks theory) on higher categories endowed with a suitable notion of topology: precisely, we defined the notions of S-site and of model site, and the associated categories of stacks on them. This led us to study a notion of \textit{model topos} (orginally due to C. Rezk), a model category version of the notion of Grothendieck topos. In this paper we treat the analogous theory starting from (1-)Segal categories in place of S-categories and model categories. We introduce notions of Segal topologies, Segal sites and stacks over them. We define an abstract notion of Segal topos and relate it with Segal categories of stacks over Segal sites. We compare the notions of Segal topoi and of model topoi, showing that the two theories are equivalent in some sense. However, the existence of a nice Segal category of morphisms between Segal categories allows us to improve the treatment of topoi in this context. In particular we construct the 2-Segal category of Segal topoi and geometric morphisms, and we provide a Giraud-like statement characterizing Segal topoi among Segal categories. As an example of applications, we show how to reconstruct a topological space up to homotopy from the Segal topos of locally constant stacks on it, thus extending the main theorem of Toen, "Vers une interpretation Galoisienne de la theorie de l'homotopie" (to appear in Cahiers de top. et geom. diff. cat.) to the case of un-based spaces. We also give some hints of how to define homotopy types of Segal sites: this approach gives a new point of view and some improvements on the étale homotopy theory of schemes, and more generally on the theory of homotopy types of Grothendieck sites as defined by Artin and Mazur.

Implicitizing rational hypersurfaces using approximation complexes

In this paper we describe an algorithm for implicitizing rational hypersurfaces in case there exists at most a finite number of base points. It is based on a technique exposed in math.AG/0210096, where implicit equations are obtained as determinants of certain graded parts of a so-called approximation complex. We detail and improve this method by providing an in-depth study of the cohomology of such a complex. In both particular cases of interest of curve and surface implicitization we also yield explicit algorithms which only involves linear algebra routines.

Non-isogenous superelliptic jacobians

In his previous papers (J. reine angew. Math. 544 (2002), 91--110; math.AG/0103203) the author introduced a certain explicit construction of superelliptic jacobians, whose endomorphism ring is the ring of integers in the $p$th cyclotomic field. (Here $p$ is an odd prime.) In the present paper we discuss when these jacobians are mutually non-isogenous. (The case of hyperelliptic jacobians was treated in author's e-print math.NT/0301173 .)

More etale covers of affine spaces in positive characteristic

We prove that every geometrically reduced projective variety of pure dimension n over a field of positive characteristic admits a morphism to projective n-space, etale away from the hyperplane H at infinity, which maps a chosen divisor into H and some chosen smooth points not on the divisor to points not in H. This improves our earlier result in math.AG/0207150, which was restricted to infinite perfect fields. We also prove a related result that controls the behavior of divisors through the chosen point.

One quiver to rule them all

To a formally smooth algebra A we associate a quiver setting (Q,a) containing enough information to reconstruct all the local quiver settings determining the etale local structure of finite dimensional representation schemes of A, see math.AG/9904171. Conjecturally, in a (yet to be developed) non-commutative etale topology, A is locally isomorphic to an algebra B which in turn is Morita equivalent (via the dimension vector a) to the path algebra CQ of the quiver Q.
