Hydrothermal Surface-Wave Instability and the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky Equation

We consider a system formed by an infinite viscous liquid layer with a constant horizontal temperature gradient, and a basic nonlinear bulk velocity profile. In the limit of long-wavelength and large nondimensional surface tension, we show that hydrothermal surface-wave instabilities may give rise to disturbances governed by the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation. A possible connection to hot-wire experiments is also discussed.

Solitons in the Camassa-Holm Shallow Water Equation

We study the class of shallow water equations of Camassa and Holm derived from the Lagrangian: $ L= \int \left( \frac{1}{2} (φ_{xxx}-φ_{x} )φ_{t} - {1 \over 2} {(φ_{x})^{3}} - {1 \over 2}φ_{x}(φ_{xx})^{2} - {1 \over 2} κφ_{x}^{2} \right) dx, $

Stationary planar domain walls of a classical spin chain

Domain walls of a discrete model of an anisotropic ferromagnet are studied. They can be described by sequences of two reversible mappings. Competition between the length scale of spatial structures and the lattice constant leads to a rich diversity of domain wall solutions related in a bifurcation scenario.

Chaotic behaviour of nonlinear waves and solitons of perturbed Korteweg - de Vries equation

This paper considers properties of nonlinear waves and solitons of Korteweg-de Vries equation in the presence of external perturbation. For time-periodic hamiltonian perturbation the width of the stochastic layer is calculated. The conclusions about chaotic behaviour in long-period waves and solitons are inferred. Obtained theoretical results find experimental confirmation in experiments with the propagation of ion-acoustic waves in plasma.

Surface tension-driven convection patterns in two liquid layers

Two superposed liquid layers display a variety of convective phenomena that are inaccessible in the traditional system where the upper layer is a gas. We consider several pairs of immiscible liquids. Once the liquids have been selected, the applied temperature difference and the depths of the layers are the only independent control parameters. Using a perfluorinated hydrocarbon and silicone oil system, we have made the first experimental observation of convection with the top plate hotter than the lower plate. Since the system is stably stratified, this convective flow is solely due to thermocapillary forces. We also have found oscillatory convection at onset in an acetonitrile and n-hexane system heated from below.

Nonlinear Modulation of Travelling Rolls in Magnetoconvection

Modulational dynamics of oscillatory travelling rolls in magnetoconvection is studied near the onset of a Hopf bifurcation. Using weakly nonlinear analysis, we derive an envelope equation of oscillatory travelling rolls in the plane perpendicular to an ambient vertical magnetic field. The envelope equation is the Davey-Stewartson (DS) equation with complex coefficients, from which we obtain criteria for the modulational (Benjamin-Feir) instability of oscillatory travelling rolls.

Time-periodic phases in populations of nonlinearly coupled oscillators with bimodal frequency distributions

The mean field Kuramoto model describing the synchronization of a population of phase oscillators with a bimodal frequency distribution is analyzed (by the method of multiple scales) near regions in its phase diagram corresponding to synchronization to phases with a time periodic order parameter. The richest behavior is found near the tricritical point were the incoherent, stationarily synchronized, ``traveling wave'' and ``standing wave'' phases coexist. The behavior near the tricritical point can be extrapolated to the rest of the phase diagram. Direct Brownian simulation of the model confirms our findings.

Pattern Formation from Defect Chaos --- A Theory of Chevrons

For over 25 years it is known that the roll structure of electroconvection (EC) in the dielectric regime in planarly aligned nematic liquid crystals has, after a transition to defect chaos, the tendency to form chevron structures. We show, with the help of a coarse-grained model, that this effect can generally be expected for systems with spontaneously broken isotropy, that is lifted by a small external perturbation. The linearized model as well as a nonlinear extension are compared to simulations of a system of coupled amplitude equations which generate chevrons out of defect chaos. The mechanism of chevron formation is similar to the development of Turing patterns in reaction diffusion systems.

Stability criterion for bright solitary waves of the perturbed cubic-quintic Schroedinger equation

The stability of the bright solitary wave solution to the perturbed cubic-quintic Schroedinger equation is considered. It is shown that in a certain region of parameter space these solutions are unstable, with the instability being manifested as a small positive eigenvalue. Furthermore, it is shown that in the complimentary region of parameter space there are no small unstable eigenvalues. The proof involves a novel calculation of the Evans function, which is of interest in its own right. As a consequence of the eigenvalue calculation, it is additionally shown that N-bump bright solitary waves bifurcate from the primary wave.

Predicting Non-linear Cellular Automata Quickly by Decomposing Them into Linear Ones

We show that a wide variety of non-linear cellular automata (CAs) can be decomposed into a quasidirect product of linear ones. These CAs can be predicted by parallel circuits of depth O(log^2 t) using gates with binary inputs, or O(log t) depth if ``sum mod p'' gates with an unbounded number of inputs are allowed. Thus these CAs can be predicted by (idealized) parallel computers much faster than by explicit simulation, even though they are non-linear. This class includes any CA whose rule, when written as an algebra, is a solvable group. We also show that CAs based on nilpotent groups can be predicted in depth O(log t) or O(1) by circuits with binary or ``sum mod p'' gates respectively. We use these techniques to give an efficient algorithm for a CA rule which, like elementary CA rule 18, has diffusing defects that annihilate in pairs. This can be used to predict the motion of defects in rule 18 in O(log^2 t) parallel time.

Nonlinear Dynamics of a Single Ferrofluid-Peak in an Oscillating Magnetic Field

If a magnetic field normal to the surface of a magnetic fluid is increased beyond a critical value a spontaneous deformation of the surface arises (normal field instability). The instability is subcritical and leads to peaks of a characteristic shape. We investigate the neighborhood of this instability experimentally under the influence of a temporal modulation of the magnetic field. We use a small vessel, where only one peak arises. The modulation can either be stabilizing or destabilizing, depending on the frequency and amplitude. We observe a cascade of odd-numbered response-periods up to period 11, and also a domain of even-numbered periods. We propose a minimal model involving a cutoff-condition which captures the essence of the experimental observations. Extended Symbolic Dynamics in Bistable CML: Existence and Stability of Fronts

We consider a diffusive Coupled Map Lattice (CML) for which the local map is piece-wise affine and has two stable fixed points. By introducing a spatio-temporal coding, we prove the one-to-one correspondence between the set of global orbits and the set of admissible codes. This relationship is applied to the study of the (uniform) fronts' dynamics. It is shown that, for any given velocity in $[-1,1]$, there is a parameter set for which the fronts with that velocity exist and their shape is unique. The dependence of the velocity of the fronts on the local map's discontinuity is proved to be a Devil's staircase. Moreover, the linear stability of the global orbits which do not reach the discontinuity follows directly from our simple map. For the fronts, this statement is improved and as a consequence, the velocity of all the propagating interfaces is computed for any parameter. The fronts are shown to be also nonlinearly stable under some restrictions on the parameters. Actually, these restrictions follow from the co-existence of uniform fronts and non-uniformly travelling fronts for strong coupling. Finally, these results are extended to some $C^{\infty}$ local maps.

Radial fingering in a Hele-Shaw cell: a weakly nonlinear analysis

The Saffman-Taylor viscous fingering instability occurs when a less viscous fluid displaces a more viscous one between narrowly spaced parallel plates in a Hele-Shaw cell. Experiments in radial flow geometry form fan-like patterns, in which fingers of different lengths compete, spread and split. Our weakly nonlinear analysis of the instability predicts these phenomena, which are beyond the scope of linear stability theory. Finger competition arises through enhanced growth of sub-harmonic perturbations, while spreading and splitting occur through the growth of harmonic modes. Nonlinear mode-coupling enhances the growth of these perturbations with appropriate relative phases, as we demonstrate through a symmetry analysis of the mode coupling equations. We contrast mode coupling in radial flow with rectangular flow geometry.

Localization and Equipartition of Energy in the beta-FPU Chain : Chaotic Breathers

The evolution towards equipartition in the $β$-FPU chain is studied considering as initial condition the highest frequency mode. Above an analytically derived energy threshold, this zone-boundary mode is shown to be modulationally unstable and to give rise to a striking localization process. The spontaneously created excitations have strong similarity with moving exact breathers solutions. But they have a finite lifetime and their dynamics is chaotic. These chaotic breathers are able to collect very efficiently the energy in the chain. Therefore their size grows in time and they can transport a very large quantity of energy. These features can be explained analyzing the dynamics of perturbed exact breathers of the FPU chain. In particular, a close connection between the Lyapunov spectrum of the chaotic breathers and the Floquet spectrum of the exact ones has been found. The emergence of chaotic breathers is convincingly explained by the absorption of high frequency phonons whereas a breather's metastability is for the first time identified. The lifetime of the chaotic breather is related to the time necessary for the system to reach equipartition. The equipartition time turns out to be dependent on the system energy density $ε$ only. Moreover, such time diverges as $ε^{-2}$ in the limit $ε\to 0$ and vanishes as $ε^{-1/4}$ for $ε\to \infty$.

Order Parameter Equations for Front Transitions: Nonuniformly Curved Fronts

Kinematic equations for the motion of slowly propagating, weakly curved fronts in bistable media are derived. The equations generalize earlier derivations where algebraic relations between the normal front velocity and its curvature are assumed. Such relations do not capture the dynamics near nonequilibrium Ising-Bloch (NIB) bifurcations, where transitions between counterpropagating Bloch fronts may spontaneously occur. The kinematic equations consist of coupled integro-differential equations for the front curvature and the front velocity, the order parameter associated with the NIB bifurcation. They capture the NIB bifurcation, the instabilities of Ising and Bloch fronts to transverse perturbations, the core structure of a spiral wave, and the dynamic process of spiral wave nucleation.

The perturbation theory based on the Riemann-Hilbert problem is developed for the modified nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation which describes the propagation of femtosecond optical pulses in nonlinear single-mode optical fibers. A detailed analysis of the adiabatic approximation to perturbation-induced evolution of the soliton parameters is given. The linear perturbation and the Raman gain are considered as examples.

Oscillon-type Structures and Their Interaction in a Swift-Hohenberg Model

Motivated by the observation of localized circular excitations (`oscillons') in vertically vibrated granular layers (P.B. Umbanhowar, F. Melo and H.L. Swinney, Nature 382 (1996) 793), we numerically investigate an extension of a Swift-Hohenberg model that exhibits a subcritical transition to square patterns. For sufficient subcriticality, stable oscillon structures are found. The localization mechanism is quite general and is due to non-adiabatic effects. Bound structures of oscillons of equal and opposite polarity are found with bound states of like polarity being less robust. Much of the phenomena are consistent with the experimental observations and suggest that oscillons are not specific to patterns in granular media or to parametrically driven systems. Experimental tests are suggested that would determine whether this minimal framework is sufficient to describe the phenomena.
