Human anaerobic intestinal "rope" parasites

Human intestinal helminths are described in this paper. They can be over a meter long, with an irregular cylindrical shape, resembling a rope. These anaerobic intestinal "rope" parasites differ significantly from other well-known intestinal parasites. Rope parasites can leave human body with enemas, and are often mistaken for intestinal lining, feces, or decayed remains of other parasites. Rope parasites can attach to intestinal walls with suction bubbles, which later develop into suction heads. Walls of the rope parasites consist of scale-like cells forming multiple branched channels along the parasite's length. Rope parasites can move by jet propulsion, passing gas bubbles through these channels. Currently known antihelminthic methods include special enemas. Most humans are likely hosting these helminths.

Development stages of the "rope" human intestinal parasite

This paper describes the five development stages of the rope worm, which could be human parasite. Rope worms have been discovered as a result of cleansing enemas. Thousands or people have passed the rope worms from all over the World. Adult stages live in human gastro-intestinal tract and are anaerobic. They move inside the body by releasing gas bubbles utilizing jet propulsion. These worms look like a rope, and can be over a meter long. The development stages were identified based on their morphology. The fifth stage looks like a tough string of mucus about a meter long. The fourth stage looks similar, but the rope worm is shorter and has softer slimier body. The third stage looks like branched jellyfish. The second stage is viscous snot, or mucus with visible gas bubbles that act as suction cups. The first stage is slimier mucus with fewer bubbles, which can reside almost anywhere in the body. Rope worms have cellular structure, based on optical microscopy, DAPI staining and DNA analysis, however, the data collected is not sufficient to identify the specie. Removal methods are also mentioned in the paper.

Horizontal symmetry in the algebraic approach of genetic code

Using concepts of physics of elementary particles concerning the breaking of symmetry and grannd unified theory we propose to study with the algebraic approximation the degeneracy finded in the genetic code with the incorporation of a horizontal symmetry used in gauge theories to fit the contents of the multiplets of the genetic code. It is used the algebraic approch of Hornos et. al. \cite{main,PRL71,PRE,MPLB}. We propose an example for the incorporation of horizontal symmetry to study mixtures of elements of the multiplets.

The Polonnaruwa meteorite: oxygen isotope, crystalline and biological composition

Results of X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis, Triple Oxygen Isotope analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) studies are presented for stone fragments recovered from the North Central Province of Sri Lanka following a witnessed fireball event on 29 December 2012. The existence of numerous nitrogen depleted highly carbonaceous fossilized biological structures fused into the rock matrix is inconsistent with recent terrestrial contamination. Oxygen isotope results compare well with those of CI and CI-like chondrites but are inconsistent with the fulgurite hypothesis.

Fossil diatoms in a new carbonaceous meteorite

We report the discovery for the first time of diatom frustules in a carbonaceous meteorite that fell in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka on 29 December 2012. Contamination is excluded by the circumstance that the elemental abundances within the structures match closely with those of the surrounding matrix. There is also evidence of structures morphologically similar to red rain cells that may have contributed to the episode of red rain that followed within days of the meteorite fall. The new data on fossil diatoms provide strong evidence to support the theory of cometary panspermia.

Information Measures of Complexity, Emergence, Self-organization, Homeostasis, and Autopoiesis

This chapter reviews measures of emergence, self-organization, complexity, homeostasis, and autopoiesis based on information theory. These measures are derived from proposed axioms and tested in two case studies: random Boolean networks and an Arctic lake ecosystem. Emergence is defined as the information a system or process produces. Self-organization is defined as the opposite of emergence, while complexity is defined as the balance between emergence and self-organization. Homeostasis reflects the stability of a system. Autopoiesis is defined as the ratio between the complexity of a system and the complexity of its environment. The proposed measures can be applied at different scales, which can be studied with multi-scale profiles.

The Social Maintenance of Cooperation through Hypocrisy

Cooperation is widespread in human societies, but its maintenance at the group level remains puzzling if individuals benefit from not cooperating. Explanations of the maintenance of cooperation generally assume that cooperative and non-cooperative behavior in others can be assessed and copied accurately. However, humans have a well known capacity to deceive and thus to manipulate how others assess their behavior. Here, we show that hypocrisy - claiming to be acting cooperatively while acting selfishly - can maintain social cooperation because it prevents the spread of selfish behavior. We demonstrate this effect both theoretically and experimentally. Hypocrisy allows the cooperative strategy to spread by taking credit for the success of the non-cooperative strategy.

Demonstrating that chlorine dioxide is a size-selective antimicrobial agent and high purity ClO2 can be used as a local antiseptic

Background / Aims ClO2, the so-called "ideal biocide", could also be applied as an antiseptic if it was understood why the solution's rapid killing of microbes does not cause any harm to humans or to animals. Our aim was to study both theoretically and experimentally its reaction-diffusion mechanism to find the source of that selectivity. Methods ClO2 permeation measurements through protein membranes were performed and the time delay of ClO2 transport due to reaction and diffusion was determined. To calculate ClO2 penetration depths and estimate bacterial killing times, approximate solutions of the reaction-diffusion equation were derived. Additionally, as a preliminary test, three patients with infected wounds were treated with a 300 ppm high purity ClO2 solution and the healing process was documented. Results The rate law of the reaction-diffusion model predicts that the killing time is proportional to the square of the characteristic size (e.g. diameter) of a body, thus, small ones will be killed extremely fast. For example, the killing time for a bacterium is on the order of milliseconds in a 300 ppm ClO2 solution. Thus, the few minutes of contact time (owing to the volatility of ClO2) is quite enough to kill all bacteria, but short enough to keep ClO2 penetration into the living tissues safely below 0.1 mm, minimizing cytotoxic effects. Pictures of successful wound healings confirm these considerations. Various properties of ClO2, advantageous for an antiseptic, are also discussed. Most importantly, bacteria are not able to develop resistance against ClO2 as it reacts with biological thiols which play a vital role in all living organisms. Conclusion Selectivity of ClO2 between humans and bacteria is based not on their different biochemistry, but on their different size. Preliminary clinical results encourage further research with this promising local antiseptic.

Sine-Gordon Solitons, Kinks and Breathers as Physical Models of Nonlinear Excitations in Living Cellular Structures

Nonlinear space-time dynamics, defined in terms of celebrated 'solitonic' equations, brings indispensable tools for understanding, prediction and control of complex behaviors in both physical and life sciences. In this paper, we review sine-Gordon solitons, kinks and breathers as models of nonlinear excitations in complex systems in physics and in living cellular structures, both intra-cellular (DNA, protein folding and microtubules) and inter-cellular (neural impulses and muscular contractions). Key words: Sine-Gordon solitons, kinks and breathers, DNA, Protein folding, Microtubules, Neural conduction, Muscular contraction

Harmonic mean as a determinant of the genetic code

It is shown that there is a sense in splitting Genetic Code Table (GCT) into three parts using the harmonic mean, calculated by the formula H (a, b) = 2ab / (a + b), where a = 63 and b = 31.5. Within these three parts, the amino acids (AAs) are positioned on the basis of the validity of the evident regularities of key parameters, such as polarity, hydrophobicity and enzyme-mediated amino acid classification. In addition, there are obvious balances of the number of atoms in the nucleotide triplets and corresponding amino acid groups and/or classes.

Exploration-exploitation trade-off features a saltatory search behaviour

Searching experiments conducted in different virtual environments over a gender balanced group of people revealed a gender irrelevant scale-free spread of searching activity on large spatiotemporal scales. We have suggested and solved analytically a simple statistical model of the coherent-noise type describing the exploration-exploitation trade-off in humans ("should I stay or should I go"). The model exhibits a variety of saltatory behaviours, ranging from Levy flights occurring under uncertainty to Brownian walks performed by a treasure hunter confident of the eventual success.

Agreeing to disagree, some ironies, disappointing scientific practice and a call for better: reply to < >

This letter is a response to a Divergent Views article entitled < > (Garmire and Subramaniam 2013), which was a response to our Divergent Views article entitled < > (Zhou et al. 2013). Using reproducible code examples, we showed that they incorrectly used our normalization method and highlighted additional concerns with their study. Here, I wish to debunk several untrue or misleading statements made by the authors (hereafter referred to as GS) in their response. Unlike GSs, my claims are supported by R code, citations and email correspondences. I finish by making a call for better practice.

The Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Infection Controls

Multi-resistant organisms (MROs), the bacteria that are resistant to a number of different antibiotics, have been very popular around the world in recent years. They are very difficult to treat but highly infectious in humans. MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) is one of the MROs. It is believed that in 2007 more people died of MRSA than of AIDS worldwide. In Australia "there are about 2000 people per year who have a bloodstream infection with the MRSA germ and the vast majority of those get them from health care procedure" (Nader, 2005). It is acknowledged as a significant challenge to Australian hospitals for MRSA infection control. Nursing professionals are in urgent need of the study of MRSA nosocomial infection controls. This review provides insight into the hand washing and isolation infection-control strategies for MRSA. The important technologies on those two aspects worldwide are well surveyed, compared, contrasted, and discussed. The review is to do a complete survey on the hand washing and isolation technologies of infection controls for MRSA and try to provide some possible recommendations for Australian hospitals.

Association between Experiences and Representations: Memory, Dreaming, Dementia and Consciousness

The mechanisms underlying major aspects of the human brain remain a mystery. It is unknown how verbal episodic memory is formed and integrated with sensory episodic memory. There is no consensus on the function and nature of dreaming. Here we present a theory for governing neural activity in the human brain. The theory describes the mechanisms for building memory traces for entities and explains how verbal memory is integrated with sensory memory. We infer that a core function of dreaming is to move charged particles such as calcium ions from the hippocampus to association areas to primary areas. We link a high level of calcium ions concentrations to Alzheimer's disease. We present a more precise definition of consciousness. Our results are a step forward in understanding the function and health of the human brain and provide the public with ways to keep a healthy brain.

Translating photobiology to electrophysiology: A brief overview of several photobiological processes with accent on electrophysiology

The mini-review gives special attention to holistic approach and mechanisms of processes. The physical and chemical frames and background for visual perception and signalling are discussed. Perception of photons by retinal rod cells is described in more detail starting from photon absorption and culminating in ion currents. Dark noise and temperature-dependence of photoreceptor cells are analysed. Perception of polarised light, its effects and informational importance are discussed based on underlying mechanisms and specialised morphological structures of biological organisms. Role of statistics of photons in photoreception is questioned. The review also pinpoints new and developing directions and raises questions for the future research.

Insights Into Quantitative Biology: analysis of cellular adaptation

In the last years many powerful techniques have emerged to measure protein interactions as well as gene expression. Many progresses have been done since the introduction of these techniques but not toward quantitative analysis of data. In this paper we show how to study cellular adaptation and how to detect cellular subpopulations. Moreover we go deeper in analyzing signal transduction pathways dynamics.

The genetic code, algebra of projection operators and problems of inherited biological ensembles

This article is devoted to applications of projection operators to simulate phenomenological properties of the molecular-genetic code system. Oblique projection operators are under consideration, which are connected with matrix representations of the genetic coding system in forms of the Rademacher and Hadamard matrices. Evidences are shown that sums of such projectors give abilities for adequate simulations of ensembles of inherited biological phenomena including ensembles of biological cycles, morphogenetic ensembles of phyllotaxis patterns, mirror-symmetric patterns, etc. For such modeling, the author proposes multidimensional vector spaces, whose subspaces are under a selective control (or coding) by means of a set of matrix operators on base of genetic projectors. Development of genetic biomechanics is discussed. The author proposes and describes special systems of multidimensional numbers under names united-hypercomplex numbers, which attracted his attention when he studied genetic systems and genetic matrices. New rules of long nucleotide sequences are described on the base of the proposed notion of tetra-groups of equivalent oligonucleotides. Described results can be used for developing algebraic biology, bio-technical applications and some other fields of science and technology.
