Twisted N=2 Supersymmetry with Central Charge and Equivariant Cohomology

We present an equivariant extension of the Thom form with respect to a vector field action, in the framework of the Mathai-Quillen formalism. The associated Topological Quantum Field Theories correspond to twisted $N=2$ supersymmetric theories with a central charge. We analyze in detail two different cases: topological sigma models and non-abelian monopoles on four-manifolds.

Generating Functional in CFT and Effective Action for Two-Dimensional Quantum Gravity on Higher Genus Riemann Surfaces

We formulate and solve the analog of the universal Conformal Ward Identity for the stress-energy tensor on a compact Riemann surface of genus $g>1$, and present a rigorous invariant formulation of the chiral sector in the induced two-dimensional gravity on higher genus Riemann surfaces. Our construction of the action functional uses various double complexes naturally associated with a Riemann surface, with computations that are quite similar to descent calculations in BRST cohomology theory. We also provide an interpretation for the action functional in terms of the geometry of different fiber spaces over the Teichmüller space of compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g>1$.

On nodal sets for Dirac and Laplace operators

We prove that the nodal set (zero set) of a solution of a generalized Dirac equation on a Riemannian manifold has codimension 2 at least. If the underlying manifold is a surface, then the nodal set is discrete. We obtain a quick proof of the fact that the nodal set of an eigenfunction for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a Riemannian manifold consists of a smooth hypersurface and a singular set of lower dimension. We also see that the nodal set of a $Δ$-harmonic differential form on a closed manifold has codimension 2 at least; a fact which is not true if the manifold is not closed. Examples show that all bounds are optimal.

The sh Lie structure of Poisson brackets in field theory

A general construction of an sh Lie algebra from a homological resolution of a Lie algebra is given. It is applied to the space of local functionals equipped with a Poisson bracket, induced by a bracket for local functions along the lines suggested by Gel'fand, Dickey and Dorfman. In this way, higher order maps are constructed which combine to form an sh Lie algebra on the graded differential algebra of horizontal forms. The same construction applies for graded brackets in field theory such as the Batalin-Fradkin-Vilkovisky bracket of the Hamiltonian BRST theory or the Batalin-Vilkovisky antibracket.

D-Brane Bound States Redux

We study the existence of D-brane bound states at threshold in Type II string theories. In a number of situations, we can reduce the question of existence to quadrature, and the study of a particular limit of the propagator for the system of D-branes. This involves a derivation of an index theorem for a family of non-Fredholm operators. In support of the conjectured relation between compactified eleven-dimensional supergravity and Type IIA string theory, we show that a bound state exists for two coincident zero-branes. This result also provides support for the conjectured description of M-theory as a matrix model. In addition, we provide further evidence that there are no BPS bound states for two and three-branes twice wrapped on Calabi-Yau vanishing cycles.

Gauge theories on manifolds with boundary

The boundary-value problem for Laplace-type operators acting on smooth sections of a vector bundle over a compact Riemannian manifold with generalized local boundary conditions including both normal and tangential derivatives is studied. The condition of strong ellipticity of this boundary-value problem is formulated. The resolvent kernel and the heat kernel in the leading approximation are explicitly constructed. As a result, the previous work in the literature on heat-kernel asymptotics is shown to be a particular case of a more general structure. For a bosonic gauge theory on a compact Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary, the problem is studied of obtaining a gauge-field operator of Laplace type, jointly with local and gauge-invariant boundary conditions, which should lead to a strongly elliptic boundary-value problem. The scheme is extended to fermionic gauge theories by means of local and gauge-invariant projectors. After deriving a general condition for the validity of strong ellipticity for gauge theories, it is proved that for Euclidean Yang--Mills theory and Rarita--Schwinger fields all the above conditions can be satisfied. For Euclidean quantum gravity, however, this property no longer holds, i.e. the corresponding boundary-value problem is not strongly elliptic. Some non-standard local formulae for the leading asymptotics of the heat-kernel diagonal are also obtained. It is shown that, due to the absence of strong ellipticity, the heat-kernel diagonal is non-integrable near the boundary.

Special Kahler Manifolds

We give an intrinsic definition of the special geometry which arises in global N=2 supersymmetry in four dimensions. The base of an algebraic integrable system exhibits this geometry, and with an integrality hypothesis any special Kahler manifold is so related to an integrable system. The cotangent bundle of a special Kahler manifold carries a hyperkahler metric. We also define special geometry in supergravity in terms of the special geometry in global supersymmetry.

On the Incompleteness of Berger's List of Holonomy Representations

In 1955, Berger \cite{Ber} gave a list of irreducible reductive representations which can occur as the holonomy of a torsion-free affine connection. This list was stated to be complete up to possibly a finite number of missing entries. In this paper, we show that there is, in fact, an infinite family of representations which are missing from this list, thereby showing the incompleteness of Berger's classification. Moreover, we develop a method to construct torsion-free connections with prescribed holonomy, and use it to give a complete description of the torsion-free affine connections with these new holonomies. We also deduce some striking facts about their global behaviour.

Holomorphic Curves and Toda Systems

Geometry of holomorphic curves from point of view of open Toda systems is discussed. Parametrization of curves related this way to non-exceptional simple Lie algebras is given. This gives rise to explicit formulas for minimal surfaces in real, complex and quaternionic projective spaces or complex quadrics. The paper generalizes the well known connection between minimal surfaces in $\EE^{3}$, their Weierstrass representation in terms of holomorphic functions and the general solution to the Liouville equation.

Twistors and Nearly Autoparallel Maps

In this work a proposal for definition of twistors on generic curved spaces is exposed and investigated. We consider superpositions of nearly autoparallel and nearly geodesic maps (nearly conformal maps, nc-maps) of (pseudo-)Riemannian spaces as generalizations of conformal transforms. We introduce the nearly autoparallel twistor equations being compatible on nc-flat spaces and study nearly autoparallel twistor structures generating curved spaces and vacuum Einstein equations.

Isothermic surfaces in $\E^3$ as soliton surfaces

We show that the theory of isothermic surfaces in $\E^3$ -- one of the oldest branches of differential geometry -- can be reformulated within the modern theory of completely integrable (soliton) systems. This enables one to study the geometry of isothermic surfaces in $\E^3$ by means of powerful spectral methods available in the soliton theory. Also the associated non-linear system is interesting in itself since it displays some unconventional soliton features and, physically, could be applied in the theory of infinitesimal deformations of membranes.

Connections on central bimodules

We define and study the theory of derivation-based connections on a recently introduced class of bimodules over an algebra which reduces to the category of modules whenever the algebra is commutative. This theory contains, in particular, a noncommutative generalization of linear connections. We also discuss the different noncommutative versions of differential forms based on derivations. Then we investigate reality conditions and a noncommutative generalization of pseudo-riemannian structures.

The other topological twisting of N=4 Yang-Mills

We present the alternative topological twisting of N=4 Yang-Mills, in which the path integral is dominated not by instantons, but by flat connections of the COMPLEXIFIED gauge group. The theory is nontrivial on compact orientable four-manifolds with nonpositive Euler number, which are necessarily not simply connected. On such manifolds, one finds a single topological invariant, analogous to the Casson invariant of three-manifolds.

A class of anisotropic (Finsler-) space-time geometries

A particular Finsler-metric proposed in [1,2] and describing a geometry with a preferred null direction is characterized here as belonging to a subclass contained in a larger class of Finsler-metrics with one or more preferred directions (null, space- or timelike). The metrics are classified according to their group of isometries. These turn out to be isomorphic to subgroups of the Poincaré (Lorentz-) group complemented by the generator of a dilatation. The arising Finsler geometries may be used for the construction of relativistic theories testing the isotropy of space. It is shown that the Finsler space with the only preferred null direction is the anisotropic space closest to isotropic Minkowski-space of the full class discussed.

Quantization of symplectic tori in a real polarization

We apply the geometric quantization method with real polarizations to the quantization of a symplectic torus. By quantizing with half-densities we canonically associate to the symplectic torus a projective Hilbert space and prove that the projective factor is expressible in terms of the Maslov-Kashiwara index. As in the quantization of a linear symplectic space, we have two ways of resolving the projective ambiguity: (i) by introducing a metaplectic structure and using half-forms in the definition of the Hilbert space; (ii) by choosing a 4-fold cover of the Lagrangian Grassmannian of the linear symplectic space covering the torus. We show that the Hilbert space constructed through either of these approaches realizes a unitary representation of the integer metaplectic group.

A ``stable'' version of the Gromov-Lawson conjecture

We discuss a conjecture of Gromov and Lawson, later modified by Rosenberg, concerning the existence of metrics of positive scalar curvature. It says that a closed spin manifold $M$ of dimension $n\ge 5$ has such a metric if and only if the index of a suitable ``Dirac" operator in $KO_n(C^* (π_1(M)))$, the real $K$-theory of the group $C^*$-algebra of the fundamental group of $M$, vanishes. It is known that the vanishing of the index is necessary for existence of a positive scalar curvature metric on $M$, but this is known to be a sufficient condition only if $π_1(M)$ is the trivial group, $\Bbb Z/2$, an odd order cyclic group, or one of a fairly small class of torsion-free groups. \par We note that the groups $KO_n(C^*(π))$ are periodic in $n$ with period $8$, whereas there is no obvious periodicity in the original geometric problem. This leads us to introduce a ``stable'' version of the Gromov-Lawson conjecture, which makes the weaker statement that the product of $M$ with enough copies of the ``Bott manifold" $B$ has a positive scalar curvature metric if and only if the index of the Dirac operator on $M$ vanishes. (Here $B$ is a simply connected $8$-manifold which represents the periodicity element in $KO_8(pt)$.) We prove the stable Gromov-Lawson conjecture for all spin manifolds with finite fundamental group and for many spin manifolds with infinite fundamental group.

The decomposition and classification of radiant affine 3-manifolds

An affine manifold is a manifold with torsion-free flat affine connection. A geometric topologist's definition of an affine manifold is a manifold with an atlas of charts to the affine space with affine transition functions; a radiant affine manifold is an affine manifold with holonomy consisting of affine transformations fixing a common fixed point. We decompose an orientable closed radiant affine 3-manifold into radiant 2-convex affine manifolds and radiant concave affine 3-manifolds along mutually disjoint totally geodesic tori or Klein bottles using the convex and concave decomposition of real projective $n$-manifolds developed earlier. Then we decompose a 2-convex radiant affine manifold into convex radiant affine manifolds and concave-cone affine manifolds. To do this, we will obtain certain nice geometric objects in the Kuiper completion of holonomy cover. The equivariance and local finiteness property of the collection of such objects will show that their union covers a compact submanifold of codimension zero, the complement of which is convex. Finally, using the results of Barbot, we will show that a closed radiant affine 3-manifold admits a total cross section, confirming a conjecture of Carrière, and hence every radiant affine 3-manifold is homeomorphic to a Seifert fibered space with trivial Euler number, or a virtual bundle over a circle with fiber homeomorphic to a torus.
