Existence threshold for the ac-driven damped nonlinear Schrödinger solitons

It has been known for some time that solitons of the externally driven, damped nonlinear Schrödinger equation can only exist if the driver's strength, $h$, exceeds approximately $(2/ π) γ$, where $γ$ is the dissipation coefficient. Although this perturbative result was expected to be correct only to the leading order in $γ$, recent studies have demonstrated that the formula $h_{thr}= (2 /π) γ$ gives a remarkably accurate description of the soliton's existence threshold prompting suggestions that it is, in fact, exact. In this note we evaluate the next order in the expansion of $h_{thr}(γ)$ showing that the actual reason for this phenomenon is simply that the next-order coefficient is anomalously small: $h_{thr}=(2/ π) γ+ 0.002 γ^3$. Our approach is based on a singular perturbation expansion of the soliton near the turning point; it allows to evaluate $h_{thr}(γ)$ to all orders in $γ$ and can be easily reformulated for other perturbed soliton equations.

Sources, sinks and wavenumber selection in coupled CGL equations and experimental implications for counter-propagating wave systems

We study the coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equations for traveling wave systems in the regime where sources and sinks separate patches of left and right-traveling waves. We show that sources and sinks are the important coherent structures that organize much of the dynamical properties of traveling wave systems. We present in detail the framework to analyze these coherent structures. Our counting arguments for the multiplicities of these structures show that independently of the coefficients of the CGL, there exists a symmetric stationary source solution, which sends out waves with a unique frequency and wave number. Sinks, on the other hand, occur in two-parameter families, and play an essentially passive role. Simulations show that sources can send out stable waves, convectively unstable waves, or absolutely unstable waves. We show that there exists an additional dynamical regime where both single- and bimodal states are unstable; the ensuing chaotic states have no counterpart in single amplitude equations. A third dynamical mechanism is associated with the fact that the width of the sources does not show simple scaling with the growth rate epsilon. In particular, when the group velocity term dominates over the linear growth term, no stationary source can exist, but sources displaying nontrivial dynamics can survive here. Our results are easily accessible by experiments, and we advocate a study of the sources and sinks as a means to probe traveling wave systems and compare theory and experiment.

Instabilities of Hexagonal Patterns with Broken Chiral Symmetry

Three coupled Ginzburg-Landau equations for hexagonal patterns with broken chiral symmetry are investigated. They are relevant for the dynamics close to onset of rotating non-Boussinesq or surface-tension-driven convection. Steady and oscillatory, long- and short-wave instabilities of the hexagons are found. For the long-wave behavior coupled phase equations are derived. Numerical simulations of the Ginzburg-Landau equations indicate bistability between spatio-temporally chaotic patterns and stable steady hexagons. The chaotic state can, however, not be described properly with the Ginzburg-Landau equations.

Thermoconvection in magnetized ferrofluids: the influence of boundaries with finite heat conductivity

Realistic boundaries of finite heat conductivity Realistic boundaries of finite heat conductivity for thermoconvection in a Rayleigh-Bénard setup with magnetized ferrofluids are investigated. A linear stability analysis of the conductive state is performed with a shooting method. It shows that the critical wave number is for any magnetic field stronly influenced by the conductivity of the boundaries. Linear as well as nonlinear coefficients of a Ginzburg Landau amplitude equation for convection shortly above the onset are evaluated as functions of the magnetic Rayleigh number, the boundary conductivities, and the fluid Prandtl number.

Discrete Breathers

Nonlinear classical Hamiltonian lattices exhibit generic solutions in the form of discrete breathers. These solutions are time-periodic and (typically exponentially) localized in space. The lattices exhibit discrete translational symmetry. Discrete breathers are not confined to certain lattice dimensions. Necessary ingredients for their occurence are the existence of upper bounds on the phonon spectrum (of small fluctuations around the groundstate) of the system as well as the nonlinearity in the differential equations. We will present existence proofs, formulate necessary existence conditions, and discuss structural stability of discrete breathers. The following results will be also discussed: the creation of breathers through tangent bifurcation of band edge plane waves; dynamical stability; details of the spatial decay; numerical methods of obtaining breathers; interaction of breathers with phonons and electrons; movability; influence of the lattice dimension on discrete breather properties; quantum lattices - quantum breathers. Finally we will formulate a new conceptual aproach capable of predicting whether discrete breather exist for a given system or not, without actually solving for the breather. We discuss potential applications in lattice dynamics of solids (especially molecular crystals), selective bond excitations in large molecules, dynamical properties of coupled arrays of Josephson junctions, and localization of electromagnetic waves in photonic crystals with nonlinear response.

On the Origin of Traveling Pulses in Bistable Systems

The interaction between a pair of Bloch fronts forming a traveling domain in a bistable medium is studied. A parameter range beyond the nonequilibrium Ising-Bloch bifurcation is found where traveling domains collapse. Only beyond a second threshold the repulsive front interactions become strong enough to balance attractive interactions and asymmetries in front speeds, and form stable traveling pulses. The analysis is carried out for the forced complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. Similar qualitative behavior is found in the bistable FitzHugh-Nagumo model.

Complexation of Wavenumbers in Solitons

It is shown that, by letting wavenumbers and frequencies complex in Hirota's bilinear method, new classes of exact solutions of soliton equations can be obtained systematically. They include not only singular or N-homoclinic solutions but also N-wavepacket solutions.

Localized moving breathers in a 2-D hexagonal lattice

We show for the first time that highly localized in-plane breathers can propagate in specific directions with minimal lateral spreading in a model 2-D hexagonal non-linear lattice. The lattice is subject to an on-site potential in addition to longitudinal nonlinear inter-particle interactions. This study investigates the prediction that stable breather-like solitons could be formed as a result of energetic scattering events in a given layered crystal and would propagate in atomic-chain directions in certain atomic planes. This prediction arose from a long-term study of previously unexplained dark lines in natural crystals of muscovite mica.

A Potential of Incoherent Attraction Between Multidimensional Solitons

We obtain analytical expressions for an effective potential of interaction between two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) solitons (including the case of 2D vortex solitons) belonging to two different modes which are incoherently coupled by cross-phase modulation. The derivation is based on calculation of the interaction term in the full Hamiltonian of the system. An essential peculiarity is that, in the 3D case, as well as in the case of 2D solitons with unequal masses, the main contribution to the interaction potential originates from a vicinity of one or both solitons, similarly to what was recently found in the 2D and 3D single-mode systems, while in the case of identical 2D solitons, the dominating area covers all the space between the solitons. Unlike the single-mode systems,_stable_ bound states of mutually orbiting solitons are shown to be possible in the bimodal system.

Dynamical Scaling Behavior of the Swift-Hohenberg Equation Following a Quench to the Modulated State

We study the kinetics of phase transitions in a Rayleigh-Benard system after onset of convection using 2D Swift-Hohenberg equation. An initially uniform state evolves to one whose ground state is spatially periodic. We confirmed previous results which showed that dynamical scaling occurs at medium quench ($ε= 0.25$) with scaling exponents 1/5 and 1/4 under zero noise and finite noise respectively. We find logarithmic scaling behavior for a deep quench ($ε= 0.75$) at zero noise. A simple method is devised to measure the proxy of domain wall length. We find that the energy and domain wall length exhibit scaling behavior with the same exponent. For $ε= 0.25$, the scaling exponents are 1/4 and 0.3 at zero and finite noise respectively.

Ordered and Disordered Defect Chaos

Defect-chaos is studied numerically in coupled Ginzburg-Landau equations for parametrically driven waves. The motion of the defects is traced in detail yielding their life-times, annihilation partners, and distances traveled. In a regime in which in the one-dimensional case the chaotic dynamics is due to double phase slips, the two-dimensional system exhibits a strongly ordered stripe pattern. When the parity-breaking instability to traveling waves is approached this order vanishes and the correlation function decays rapidly. In the ordered regime the defects have a typical life-time, whereas in the disordered regime the life-time distribution is exponential. The probability of large defect loops is substantially larger in the disordered regime.

Kinematic Equations for Front Motion and Spiral-Wave Nucleation

We present a new set of kinematic equations for front motion in bistable media. The equations extend earlier kinematic approaches by coupling the front curvature with the order parameter associated with a parity breaking front bifurcation. In addition to naturally describing the core region of rotating spiral waves the equations can be be used to study the nucleation of spiral-wave pairs along uniformly propagating fronts. The analysis of spiral-wave nucleation reduces to the simpler problem of droplet, or domain, nucleation in one space dimension.

Spiral Dynamics in Pattern-Forming Systems: Mean Flow Effects

Mean flow effects are discussed for two different pattern-forming systems: Rayleigh-Benard convection and Faraday instability in viscous fluid. In both systems spirals are observed in certain parameter regions. In the Rayleigh-Benard convection, the spiral core instability and subsequent generation of up- and downflow hexagons are shown to occur due to the mean flow generated by the curved rolls near the core. In the Faraday instability, the mean flow which is generated by rapidly decaying surface waves near the wall, causes wavenumber frustration which leads to a rigid-body spiral rotation. In both cases we use phenomenological Swift-Hohenberg-type equations for the order parameter coupled to a large-scale mean flow. Numerical simulations are compared to recently reported experimental results.

Long-range interacting solitons: pattern formation and nonextensive thermostatistics

The nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with a different potential that satisfies the degeneracy properties discussed in this paper possesses solitonic solutions that interact with long-range forces. We generalize the Ginzburg-Landau equation in such a way that the topological defects supported by this equation present long-range interaction both in D = 1 and D > 1. Finally, we construct a system of two equations with two complex order parameters in such a way that the interaction forces between the topological defects decay so slowly that the system enters the nonextensivity regime.

Mean field analysis of Williams-Bjerknes type growth

We investigate a class of stochastic growth models involving competition between two phases in which one of the phases has a competitive advantage. The equilibrium populations of the competing phases are calculated using a mean field analysis. Regression probabilities for the extinction of the advantaged phase are calculated in a leading order approximation. The results of the calculations are in good agreement with simulations carried out on a square lattice with periodic boundaries. The class of models are variants of the Williams- Bjerknes model for the growth of tumours in the basal layer of an epithelium. In the limit in which only one of the phases is unstable the class of models reduces to the well known variants of the Eden model.

Soliton structure dynamics in inhomogeneous media

We show that soliton interaction with finite-width inhomogeneities can activate a great number of soliton internal modes. We obtain the exact stationary soliton solution in the presence of inhomogeneities and solve exactly the stability problem. We present a Karhunen-Loeve analysis of the soliton structure dynamics as a time-dependent force pumps energy into the traslational mode of the kink. We show the importance of the internal modes of the soliton as they can generate shape chaos for the soliton as well as cases in which the first shape mode leads the dynamics.

Studies of Bacterial Branching Growth using Reaction-Diffusion Models for Colonial Development

Various bacterial strains exhibit colonial branching patterns during growth on poor substrates. These patterns reflect bacterial cooperative self-organization and cybernetic processes of communication, regulation and control employed during colonial development. One method of modeling is the continuous, or coupled reaction-diffusion approach, in which continuous time evolution equations describe the bacterial density and the concentration of the relevant chemical fields. In the context of branching growth, this idea has been pursued by a number of groups. We present an additional model which includes a lubrication fluid excreted by the bacteria. We also add fields of chemotactic agents to the other models. We then present a critique of this whole enterprise with focus on the models' potential for revealing new biological features.

Spatiotemporal chaotic dynamics of solitons with internal structure in the presence of finite-width inhomogeneities

We present an analytical and numerical study of the Klein-Gordon kink-soliton dynamics in inhomogeneous media. In particular, we study an external field that is almost constant for the whole system but that changes its sign at the center of coordinates and a localized impurity with finite-width. The soliton solution of the Klein-Gordon-like equations is usually treated as a structureless point-like particle. A richer dynamics is unveiled when the extended character of the soliton is taken into account. We show that interesting spatiotemporal phenomena appear when the structure of the soliton interacts with finite-width inhomogeneities. We solve an inverse problem in order to have external perturbations which are generic and topologically equivalent to well-known bifurcation models and such that the stability problem can be solved exactly. We also show the different quasiperiodic and chaotic motions the soliton undergoes as a time-dependent force pumps energy into the traslational mode of the kink and relate these dynamics with the excitation of the shape modes of the soliton.
