The Study on the Effects of Chromaticity and Magnetic Field Tracking Errors at CSNS/RCS

The Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) is a key component of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). For this type of high intensity proton synchrotron, the chromaticity, space charge effects and magnetic field tracking errors between the quadrupoles and the dipoles can induce beta function distortion and tune shift, and induce resonances. In this paper the combined effects of chromaticity, magnetic field tracking errors and space charge on beam dynamics at CSNS/RCS are studied systemically. 3-D simulations with different magnetic field tracking errors are performed by using the code ORBIT, and the simulation results are compared with the case without tracking errors.

Progress Towards Completion of the MICE Demonstration of Muon Ionization Cooling

The Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory aims to demonstrate $\approx$ 10% ionization cooling of a muon beam by its interaction with low-Z absorber materials followed by restoration of longitudinal momentum in RF linacs. MICE Step IV, including the first LH2 or LiH absorber cell sandwiched between two particle tracking spectrometers, is the collaboration's near-term goal. Two large superconducting spectrometer solenoids and one focus coil solenoid will provide a magnetic field of $\approx$4 T in the tracker and absorber-cell volumes. The status of these components is described, as well as progress towards Steps V and VI, including the eight RF cavities to provide the required 8 MV/m gradient in a strong magnetic field; this entails an RF drive system to deliver 2 MW, 1 ms pulses of 201 MHz frequency at 1 Hz repetition rate, the distribution network to deliver 1 MW to each cavity with correct RF phasing, diagnostics to determine the gradient and the muon transit phase, and development of the large-diameter magnets required for the linacs.

Radiation field simulation of C-ADS Injector II

The injector of C-ADS (Chinese Accelerator Driven Sub-critical System) project is a high current, fully super-conducting proton accelerator. Meanwhile, a BLM system is indispensable to this facility, especially in low energy segments. This paper presents some basic simulations for 10MeV proton by Monte Carlo program FLUKA, as well as the distributions on different secondary particles in three aspects: angular, energy spectrum and current. These results are beneficial to selecting the detector type and its location and determining its dynamic range matching different requirements for both fast and slow beam loss. Further, the major impact of the background is analyzed, such as superconducting cavity X radiation and radiation caused by material activation, in this paper as well. This work is meaningful in BLM system research.

Three kicker assemblies, eight pulsed magnets, will be used in the CSNS rapid circle synchrotron (RCS). The physical and structural designs of eight kicker magnets that are grouped in 5 different types are presented. The results of OPERA-3D simulation show that magnet center field integral meet the physics requirements of design by choosing a suitable magnet coil structure. Field uniformity for 60% width is +/-0.7%. The ferrite magnet structure and composition is introduced, and the high voltage feedthrough design, the installation of six magnets in long vacuum cavity design is discussed.

Foil Diffuser Investigation with GEANT4

An investigation into the appropriate materials for use as a diffuser foil in electron radiography was undertaken in GEANT4. Simulations were run using various refractory materials to determine a material of appropriate Z number such that energy loss is minimal. The plotted results of angular spread and energy spread are shown. It is concluded that higher Z number materials such as tungsten, tantalum, platinum or uranium could be used as diffuser materials. Also, an investigation into the handling of bremsstrahlung, multiple coulomb scattering, and ionization in GEANT4 was performed.

Beam-beam compensation studies in the Tevatron with electron lenses

At the Fermilab Tevatron collider, we studied the feasibility of suppressing the antiproton head-on beam-beam tune spread using a magnetically confined 5-keV electron beam with Gaussian transverse profile overlapping with the circulating beam. When electron cooling of antiprotons was applied in regular Tevatron operations, the nonlinear head-on beam-beam effect on antiprotons was small. Therefore, we first focused on the operational aspects, such as beam alignment and stability, and on fundamental observations of tune shifts, tune spreads, lifetimes, and emittances. We also attempted two special collider stores with only 3 proton bunches colliding with 3 antiproton bunches, to suppress long-range forces and enhance head-on effects. We present here the results of this study and a comparison between numerical simulations and observations. These results contributed to the application of this compensation concept to RHIC at Brookhaven.

Measurements of the effect of collisions on transverse beam halo diffusion in the Tevatron and in the LHC

Beam-beam forces and collision optics can strongly affect beam lifetime, dynamic aperture, and halo formation in particle colliders. Extensive analytical and numerical simulations are carried out in the design and operational stage of a machine to quantify these effects, but experimental data is scarce. The technique of small-step collimator scans was applied to the Fermilab Tevatron collider and to the CERN Large Hadron Collider to study the effect of collisions on transverse beam halo dynamics. We describe the technique and present a summary of the first results on the dependence of the halo diffusion coefficient on betatron amplitude in the Tevatron and in the LHC.

Detection of coherent beam-beam modes with digitized beam position monitor signals

A system for bunch-by-bunch detection of transverse proton and antiproton coherent oscillations in the Fermilab Tevatron collider is described. It is based on the signal from a single beam-position monitor located in a region of the ring with large amplitude functions. The signal is digitized over a large number of turns and Fourier-analyzed offline with a dedicated algorithm. To enhance the signal, band-limited noise is applied to the beam for about 1 s. This excitation does not adversely affect the circulating beams even at high luminosities. The device has a response time of a few seconds, a frequency resolution of $1.6\times 10^{-5}$ in fractional tune, and it is sensitive to oscillation amplitudes of 60 nm. It complements Schottky detectors as a diagnostic tool for tunes, tune spreads, and beam-beam effects. Measurements of coherent mode spectra are presented and compared with models of beam-beam oscillations.

Electromagnetic way of accelerating the magnetic dipoles

The article considers an opportunity of electrodynamics accelerating the magnetic dipoles at initial velocity six hundred meters per second, which is the magnetic dipole gain after pre-gas-dynamic acceleration to finite velocity eight and half kilometers per second. The acceleration length is more than two kilometers. When selecting the drag coefficient and the lift coefficient equal to one hundredth, the dipoles rise to height ten kilometers during a period of time fourteen seconds, thus reaching the vertical velocity one kilometer per second and reducing the forward velocity till seven and a half kilometer per second. The magnetic dipoles reach flight range twelve thousand three hundred kilometers.

Application of Wavelet-based Active Power Filter in Accelerator Magnet Power Supply

As modern accelerators demand excellent stability to magnet power supply (PS), it is necessary to decrease harmonic currents passing magnets. Aim at depressing rappel current from PS in Beijing electron-positron collider II, a wavelet-based active power filter (APF) is proposed in this paper. APF is an effective device to improve the quality of currents. As a countermeasure to these harmonic currents, the APF circuit generates a harmonic current, countervailing harmonic current from PS. An active power filter based on wavelet transform is proposed in this paper. Discrete wavelet transform is used to analyze the harmonic components in supply current, and active power filter circuit works according to the analysis results. At end of this paper, the simulation and experiment results are given to prove the effect of the mentioned Active power filter.

ZDC Effective Cross Section for Run 12 Uranium-Uranium Collisions in RHIC

An accurate calibration of the luminosity measurement of the 2012 Uranium-Uranium RHIC run at 96 GeV per beam is of the greatest importance in order to measure the total uranium-uranium cross section with a reasonably small error bar. During the run, which lasted from April 20th to May 15th 2012, three vernier scans per experiment were performed. Beam intensities of up to 3.4 10$^{10}$ Uranium ions in one ring were successfully accelerated to flattop at $γ= 103.48$ corresponding to 96 GeV/beam. The desired model $β^*$ value was 0.7 m in the two low beta Interaction Points IP6 and IP8. With these beam parameters interaction rates of up to 15 kHz were achieved. This note presents the data associated with the vernier scans, and discusses the results and systematic effects.

Electrodynamics acceleration of electrical dipoles

This article considers the acceleration of electric dipoles consisting of thin metal plates and dielectric (barium titanate). The dipoles are of a cylindrical shape with a diameter of the cylinder two centimeters and length one centimeter. Capacity of the parallel-plate capacitor is three hundred picofarads and it is charged up to the voltage of two hundred eighty kilovolts. Pre-acceleration of the electric dipoles till velocity one kilometer per second is reached by the gas-dynamic method. The finite acceleration is produced in a spiral waveguide, where the pulse is travelling with voltage amplitude seven hundreds kilovolts and power one hundred twenty-five megawatts. This pulse travels via the spiral waveguide and accelerates the injected electric dipoles in the longitudinal direction till the finite velocity eight and a half kilometers per second over length seven hundred and seventy meters.

The Emittace growth induced by Coherent Synchrotron Radiation(CSR) is an important issue when electron bunches with short bunch length and high peak current are transported in a bending magnet. In this paper, a single kick method is introduced which could give the same result as the R-matrix method, and much easier to use. Then with this method, an optics design technique which could minimize the emittance dilution within a single achromatic cell.

Pbar Beam Stacking in the Recycler by Longitudinal Phase-space Coating

Barrier rf buckets have brought about new challenges in longitudinal beam dynamics of charged particle beams in synchrotrons and at the same time led to many new remarkable prospects in beam handling. In this paper, I describe a novel beam stacking scheme for synchrotrons using barrier buckets without any emittance dilution to the beam. First I discuss the general principle of the method, called longitudinal phase-space coating. Multi-particle beam dynamics simulations of the scheme applied to the Recycler, convincingly validates the concepts and feasibility of the method. Then I demonstrate the technique experimentally in the Recycler and also use it in operation. A spin-off of this scheme is its usefulness in mapping the incoherent synchrotron tune spectrum of the beam particles in barrier buckets and producing a clean hollow beam in longitudinal phase space. Both of which are described here in detail with illustrations. The beam stacking scheme presented here is the first of its kind.
