Discrete time Lagrangian mechanics on Lie groups, with an application to the Lagrange top

We develop the theory of discrete time Lagrangian mechanics on Lie groups, originated in the work of Veselov and Moser, and the theory of Lagrangian reduction in the discrete time setting. The results thus obtained are applied to the investigation of an integrable time discretization of a famous integrable system of classical mechanics, -- the Lagrange top. We recall the derivation of the Euler--Poinsot equations of motion both in the frame moving with the body and in the rest frame (the latter ones being less widely known). We find a discrete time Lagrange function turning into the known continuous time Lagrangian in the continuous limit, and elaborate both descriptions of the resulting discrete time system, namely in the body frame and in the rest frame. This system naturally inherits Poisson properties of the continuous time system, the integrals of motion being deformed. The discrete time Lax representations are also found. Kirchhoff's kinetic analogy between elastic curves and motions of the Lagrange top is also generalised to the discrete context.

The construction of Frobenius manifolds from KP tau-functions

Frobenius manifolds (solutions of WDVV equations) in canonical coordinates are determined by the system of Darboux-Egoroff equations. This system of partial differential equations appears as a specific subset of the $n$-component KP hierarchy. KP representation theory and the related Sato infinite Grassmannian are used to construct solutions of this Darboux-Egoroff system and the related Frobenius manifolds. Finally we show that for these solutions Dubrovin's isomonodromy tau-function can be expressed in the KP tau-function.

Fluid Dynamical Profiles and Constants of Motion from d-Branes

Various fluid mechanical systems enjoy a hidden, higher-dimensional dynamical Poincare symmetry, which arises owing to their descent from a Nambu-Goto action. Also, for the same reason, there are equivalence transformations between different models. These interconnections are discussed in our paper.

Integrable ODEs on Associative Algebras

In this paper we give definitions of basic concepts such as symmetries, first integrals, Hamiltonian and recursion operators suitable for ordinary differential equations on associative algebras, and in particular for matrix differential equations. We choose existence of hierarchies of first integrals and/or symmetries as a criterion for integrability and justify it by examples. Using our componentless approach we have solved a number of classification problems for integrable equations on free associative algebras. Also, in the simplest case, we have listed all possible Hamiltonian operators of low order.

Integrable structures in classical off-shell 10D supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

The superspace flatness conditions which are equivalent to the field equations of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in ten dimensions have not been useful so far to derive non trivial classical solutions. Recently, modified flatness conditions were proposed, which are explicitly integrable (hep-th/9811108), and are based on the breaking of symmetry SO(9,1) -> SO(2,1)xSO(7). In this article, we investigate their physical content. To this end, group-algebraic methods are developed which allow to derive the set of physical fields and their equations of motion from the superfield expansion of the supercurl, systematically. A set of integrable superspace constraints is identified which drastically reduces the field content of the unconstrained superfield but leaves the spectrum including the original Yang-Mills vector field completely off-shell. A weaker set of constraints gives rise to additional fields obeying first order differential equations. Geometrically, the SO(7) covariant superspace constraints descend from a truncation of Witten's original linear system to particular one-parameter families of light-like rays.

Excitations in the dilute A_L lattice model: E_6, E_7 and E_8 mass spectra

On the basis of features observed in the exact perturbation approach solution for the eigenspectrum of the dilute A_3 model, we propose expressions for excitations in the dilute A_4 and A_6 models. Principally, we require that these expressions satisfy the appropriate inversion relations. We demonstrate that they give the expected E_7 and E_6 mass spectra, and universal amplitudes, and agree with numerical expressions for the eigenvalues.

Holomorphic Curves and Toda Systems

Geometry of holomorphic curves from point of view of open Toda systems is discussed. Parametrization of curves related this way to non-exceptional simple Lie algebras is given. This gives rise to explicit formulas for minimal surfaces in real, complex and quaternionic projective spaces or complex quadrics. The paper generalizes the well known connection between minimal surfaces in $\EE^{3}$, their Weierstrass representation in terms of holomorphic functions and the general solution to the Liouville equation.

Explicit and Exact Solutions to a Kolmogorov-Petrovskii-Piskunov Equation

Some explicit traveling wave solutions to a Kolmogorov-Petrovskii-Piskunov equation are presented through two ansätze. By a Cole-Hopf transformation, this Kolmogorov-Petrovskii-Piskunov equation is also written as a bilinear equation and further two solutions to describe nonlinear interaction of traveling waves are generated. Bäcklund transformations of the linear form and some special cases are considered.

Integrable Systems and Isomonodromy Deformations

We analyze in detail three classes of isomondromy deformation problems associated with integrable systems. The first two are related to the scaling invariance of the $n\times n$ AKNS hierarchies and the Gel'fand-Dikii hierarchies. The third arises in string theory as the representation of the Heisenberg group by $[(L^{k/n})_+,L]=I$ where $L$ is an $n^{th}$ order scalar differential operator. The monodromy data is constructed in each case; the inverse monodromy problem is solved as a Riemann-Hilbert problem; and a simple proof of the Painlevé property is given for the general case

Period preserving nonisospectral flows and the moduli space of periodic solutions of soliton equations

Flows on the moduli space of the algebraic Riemann surfaces, preserving the periods of the corresponding solutions of the soliton equations are studied. We show that these flows are gradient with respect to some indefinite symmetric flat metric arising in the Hamiltonian theory of the Whitham equations. The functions generating these flows are conserved quantities for all the equations simultaneously. We show that for 1+1 systems these flows can be imbedded in a larger system of ordinary nonlinear differential equations with a rational right-hand side. Finally these flows are used to give a complete description of the moduli space of algebraic Riemann surfaces corresponding to periodic solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

The Hamiltonian structure of the dispersionless Toda hierarchy

The Hamiltonian structure of the two-dimensional dispersionless Toda hierarchy is studied, this being a particular example of a system of hydrodynamic type. The polynomial conservation laws for the system turn out, after a change of variable, to be associated with the axially symmetric solutions of the 3-dimensional Laplace equation and this enables a generating function for the Hamiltonian densities to be derived in closed form.

Toda Hierarchy with Indefinite Metric

We consider a generalization of the full symmetric Toda hierarchy where the matrix $\tilde {L}$ of the Lax pair is given by $\tilde {L}=LS$, with a full symmetric matrix $L$ and a nondegenerate diagonal matrix $S$. The key feature of the hierarchy is that the inverse scattering data includes a class of noncompact groups of matrices, such as $O(p,q)$. We give an explicit formula for the solution to the initial value problem of this hierarchy. The formula is obtained by generalizing the orthogonalization procedure of Szegö, or the QR factorization method of Symes. The behaviors of the solutions are also studied. Generically, there are two types of solutions, having either sorting property or blowing up to infinity in finite time. The $τ$-function structure for the tridiagonal hierarchy is also studied.

Non-perturbative non-integrability of non-homogeneous nonlinear lattices induced by non-resonance hypothesis

We prove the non-integrability (non-existence of additional analytic conserved quantities other than Hamiltonian) for Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) lattices by virtue of Lyapunov-Kovalevskaya- -Ziglin-Yoshida's monodromy method about the variational equations. The key to this analysis is that the normal variational equations along a certain solution happen to be in a type of Lamé equations. We also introduce the classification problem towards non-homogeneous nonlinear lattices including FPU lattices using non-integrability preserving transformation.

Toda and Volterra Lattice Equations from Discrete Symmetries of KP Hierarchies

The discrete models of the Toda and Volterra chains are being constructed out of the continuum two-boson KP hierarchies. The main tool is the discrete symmetry preserving the Hamiltonian structure of the continuum models. The two-boson currents of KP hierarchy are being associated with sites of the corresponding chain by successive actions of discrete symmetry.

On the integrability of N=2 Landau-Ginzburg models: A graph generalization of the Yang-Baxter equation

The study of the integrability properties of the N=2 Landau- Ginzburg models leads naturally to a graph generalization of the Yang-Baxter equation which synthetizes the well known vertex and RSOS Yang-Baxter equations. A non trivial solution of this equation is found for the $t_2$ perturbation of the A-models, which turns out to be intimately related to the Boltzmann weights of a Chiral- Potts model.
