Descent of Deligne groupoids

To any non-negatively graded dg Lie algebra $g$ over a field $k$ of characteristic zero we assign a functor $Σ_g: art/k \to Kan$ from the category of commutative local artinian $k$-algebras with the residue field $k$ to the category of Kan simplicial sets. There is a natural homotopy equivalence between $Σ_g$ and the Deligne groupoid corresponding to $g$. The main result of the paper claims that the functor $Σ$ commutes up to homotopy with the "total space" functors which assign a dg Lie algebra to a cosimplicial dg Lie algebra and a simplicial set to a cosimplicial simplicial set. This proves a conjecture of Schechtman which implies that if a deformation problem is described ``locally'' by a sheaf of dg Lie algebras $g$ on a topological space $X$ then the global deformation problem is described by the homotopy Lie algebra $RΓ(X,g)$.

Syzygies of Abelian and Bielliptic Surfaces in P^4

So far only six families of smooth irregular surfaces are known to exist in P^4 (up to pullbacks by suitable finite covers of P^4). These are the elliptic quintic scrolls, the minimal abelian and bielliptic surfaces (of degree 10), two different families of non-minimal abelian surfaces of degree 15, and one family of non-minimal bielliptic surfaces of degree 15. The main purpose of the paper is to describe the structure of the Hartshorne-Rao modules and the syzygies for each of these smooth irregular surfaces in P^4, providing at the same time a unified construction method (via syzygies) for these families of surfaces.

Gale Duality and Free Resolutions of Ideals of Points

What is the shape of the free resolution of the ideal of a general set of points in P^r? This question is central to the programme of connecting the geometry of point sets in projective space with the structure of the free resolutions of their ideals. There is a lower bound for the resolution computable from the (known) Hilbert function, and it seemed natural to conjecture that this lower bound would be achieved. This is the ``Minimal Resolution Conjecture'' (Lorenzini [1987], [1993]). Hirschowitz and Simpson [1994] showed that the conjecture holds when the number of points is large compared with r, but three examples (with r = 6,7,8) discovered computationally by Schreyer in 1993 show that the conjecture fails in general. We describe a novel structure inside the free resolution of a set of points which accounts for the observed failures and provides a counterexample in P^r for every r\geq 6, r\neq 9. The geometry behind our construction occurs not in P^r but in a different projective space, in which there is a related set of points, the ``Gale transform'' (or ``associated set'', in the sense of Coble.)

A relative notion of algebraic Lie group and applications to $n$-stacks

If $S$ is a scheme of finite type over $k=\cc $, let $\Xx /S$ denote the big etale site of schemes over $S$. We introduce {\em presentable group sheaves}, a full subcategory of the category of sheaves of groups on $\Xx /S$ which is closed under kernel, quotient, and extension. Group sheaves which are representable by group schemes of finite type over $S$ are presentable; pullback and finite direct image preserve the notions of presentable group sheaves; over $S=Spec (k)$ then presentable group sheaves are just group schemes of finite type over $Spec(k)$; there is a notion of connectedness extending the usual notion over $Spec(k)$; and a presentable group sheaf $G$ has a Lie algebra object $Lie(G $. If $G$ is a connected presentable group sheaf then $G/Z(G)$ is determined up to isomorphism by the Lie algebra sheaf $Lie (G)$. We envision the category of presentable group sheaves as a generalisation relative to an arbitrary base scheme $S$, of the category of algebraic Lie groups over $Spec (k)$. The notion of presentable group sheaf is used in order to define {\em presentable $n$-stacks} over $\Xx$. Roughly, an $n$-stack is presentable if there is a surjection from a scheme of finite type to its $π_0$ (the actual condition on $π_0$ is slightly more subtle), and if its $π_i$ (which are sheaves on various $\Xx /S$) are presentable group sheaves. The notion of presentable $n$-stack is closed under homotopy fiber product and truncation. We propose the notion of presentable $n$-stack as an answer in characteristic zero for A. Grothendieck's search for what he called ``schematization of homotopy types''.

Plane curves with a big fundamental group of the complement

Let $C \s \pr^2$ be an irreducible plane curve whose dual $C^* \s \pr^{2*}$ is an immersed curve which is neither a conic nor a nodal cubic. The main result states that the Poincaré group $π_1(\pr^2 \se C)$ contains a free group with two generators. If the geometric genus $g$ of $C$ is at least 2, then a subgroup of $G$ can be mapped epimorphically onto the fundamental group of the normalization of $C$, and the result follows. To handle the cases $g=0,1$, we construct universal families of immersed plane curves and their Picard bundles. This allows us to reduce the consideration to the case of Plücker curves. Such a curve $C$ can be regarded as a plane section of the corresponding discriminant hypersurface (cf. [Zar, DoLib]). Applying Zariski--Lefschetz type arguments we deduce the result from `the bigness' of the $d$-th braid group $B_{d,g}$ of the Riemann surface of $C$.

On the algebraic dimension of twistor spaces over the connected sum of four complex projective planes

We study the algebraic dimension of twistor spaces of positive type over $4\bbfP^2$. We show that such a twistor space is Moishezon if and only if its anticanonical class is not nef. More precisely, we show the equivalence of being Moishezon with the existence of a smooth rational curve having negative intersection number with the anticanonical class. Furthermore, we give precise information on the dimension and base locus of the fundamental linear system $|{-1/2}K|$. This implies, for example, $\dim|{-1/2}K|\leq a(Z)$. We characterize those twistor spaces over $4\bbfP^2$, which contain a pencil of divisors of degree one by the property $\dim|{-1/2}K| = 3$.

Contractible Extremal Rays on \overline{M}_{0,n}

We consider the cones of curves and divisors on the moduli space of stable pointed rational curves,M_n, and on the quotient by the symmetric group, Q_n, which is a moduli space of pairs. We find generators for contractible extremal rays of the cone of curves NE_1(M_n), and for the cone of divisors NE^1(Q_n). This second cone turns out to be simplicial. We give complete descriptions of NE_1(M_n) and NE_1(Q_n) for small n (< 8 in the first case, < 11 in the second). We also have results of independent interest on when curves in a divisor generate the cone of curves of the ambient variety.

Torsion Points on an Algebraic Subset of an Affine Torus

Work of Laurent and Sarnak, following a conjecture of Lang, shows that the number of torsion points of order n on an algebraic subset of an affine complex torus is polynomial periodic. In this paper, we find bounds on the degree and period of this number as a function of n. Some examples, including the number of n torsion points on Fermat curves, are computed to illustrate the methods.

On imaginary plane curves and Spin quotients of complex surfaces by complex conjugation

It is proven that for any topological or analytical types of isolated singular points of plane curves, there exists a non-real irreducible plane algebraic curve of degree $d$ which goes through $d^2$ real distinct points and has imaginary singular points of the given types. This result is used to construct a series of examples of complex algebraic surfaces $X$ defined over $\R$ whose quotients $Y=X/\conj$ by the complex conjugation $\conj$ are $Spin$ simply connected 4-manifolds with signature $16k$, for arbitrary integer $k>0$.

The Hodge de Rham theory of relative Malcev completion

The Hodge de Rham theory of relative Malcev completion is developed in this paper. In the special case where one takes the corresponding reductive group to be trivial, one recovers Chen's de Rham theory of the fundamental group and the corresponding Hodge theory due to Morgan and the author. This work is a principal technical tool in the author's work on the mapping class groups.

Motives of uniruled 3-folds

We construct projectors in the ring of correspondences of a complex uniruled 3-fold $X$ which lift the Kuenneth components of the diagonal in singular cohomology and have other properties which were conjectured by J. Murre. Such Murre decompositions have been already obtained for curves, surfaces, abelian varieties and varieties with cell decompositions by the work of Manin, Shermenev, Beauville, Murre et.al.. In particular they define a natural filtration on the Chow groups of $X$ which was conjectured by Bloch and Beilinson. To do this we use Mori theory and construct projectors in the situation of a fiber space over a surface. These projectors may also be used in more general situations.

The Picard group of the moduli of G-bundles on a curve

Let G be a complex semi-simple group, and X a compact Riemann surface. The moduli space of principal G-bundles on X, and in particular the holomorphic line bundles on this space and their global sections, play an important role in the recent applications of Conformal Field Theory to algebraic geometry. In this paper we determine the Picard group of this moduli space when G is of classical or G_2 type (we consider both the coarse moduli space and the moduli stack).

The Geometry Underlying Mirror Symmetry

The recent result of Strominger, Yau and Zaslow relating mirror symmetry to the quantum field theory notion of T-duality is reinterpreted as providing a way of geometrically characterizing which Calabi-Yau manifolds have mirror partners. The geometric description---that one Calabi-Yau manifold should serve as a compactified, complexified moduli space for special Lagrangian tori on the other Calabi-Yau manifold---is rather surprising. We formulate some precise mathematical conjectures concerning how these moduli spaces are to be compactified and complexified, as well as a definition of geometric mirror pairs (in arbitrary dimension) which is independent of those conjectures. We investigate how this new geometric description ought to be related to the mathematical statements which have previously been extracted from mirror symmetry. In particular, we discuss how the moduli spaces of the `mirror' Calabi-Yau manifolds should be related to one another, and how appropriate subspaces of the homology groups of those manifolds could be related. We treat the case of K3 surfaces in some detail.

On the general elephant conjecture for Mori conic bundles

Let $f:X\to S$ be an extremal contraction from a threefolds with terminal singularities onto a surface (so called Mori conic bundle). We study some particular cases of such contractions: quotients of usual conic bundles and index two contractions. Assuming Reid's general elephants conjecture we also obtain a rough classification. We present many examples.

Lower Bounds for diophantine Approximation

We introduce a subexponential algorithm for geometric solving of multivariate polynomial equation systems whose bit complexity depends mainly on intrinsic geometric invariants of the solution set. From this algorithm, we derive a new procedure for the decision of consistency of polynomial equation systems whose bit complexity is subexponential, too. As a byproduct, we analyze the division of a polynomial modulo a reduced complete intersection ideal and from this, we obtain an intrinsic lower bound for the logarithmic height of diophantine approximations to a given solution of a zero--dimensional polynomial equation system. This result represents a multivariate version of Liouville's classical theorem on approximation of algebraic numbers by rationals. A special feature of our procedures is their {\em polynomial} character with respect to the mentioned geometric invariants when instead of bit operations only arithmetic operations are counted at unit cost. Technically our paper relies on the use of straight--line programs as a data structure for the encoding of polynomials, on a new symbolic application of Newton's algorithm to the Implicit Function Theorem and on a special, basis independent trace formula for affine Gorenstein algebras.
