A Lattice Boltzmann Model of Binary Fluid Mixture

We introduce a lattice Boltzmann for simulating an immiscible binary fluid mixture. Our collision rules are derived from a macroscopic thermodynamic description of the fluid in a way motivated by the Cahn-Hilliard approach to non-equilibrium dynamics. This ensures that a thermodynamically consistent state is reached in equilibrium. The non-equilibrium dynamics is investigated numerically and found to agree with simple analytic predictions in both the one-phase and the two-phase region of the phase diagram.

An H-Theorem for the Lattice Boltzmann Approach to Hydrodynamics

The lattice Boltzmann equation can be viewed as a discretization of the continuous Boltzmann equation. Because of this connection it has long been speculated that lattice Boltzmann algorithms might obey an H-theorem. In this letter we prove that usual nine-velocity models do not obey an H-theorem but models that do obey an H-theorem can be constructed. We consider the general conditions a lattice Boltzmann scheme must satisfy in order to obey an H-theorem and show why on a lattice, unlike the continuous case, dynamics that decrease an H-functional do not necessarily lead to a unique ground state.

Spatio-selection in Expanding Bacterial Colonies

Segregation of populations is a key question in evolution theory. One important aspect is the relation between spatial organization and the population's composition. Here we study a specific example -- sectors in expanding bacterial colonies. Such sectors are spatially segregated sub-populations of mutants. The sectors can be seen both in disk-shaped colonies and in branching colonies. We study the sectors using two models we have used in the past to study bacterial colonies -- a continuous reaction-diffusion model with non-linear diffusion and a discrete ``Communicating Walkers'' model. We find that in expanding colonies, and especially in branching colonies, segregation processes are more likely than in a spatially static population. One such process is the establishment of stable sub- population having neutral mutation. Another example is the maintenance of wild-type population along side with sub-population of advantageous mutants. Understanding such processes in bacterial colonies is an important subject by itself, as well as a model system for similar processes in other spreading populations.

Cellular Automaton for Realistic Modelling of Landslides

A numerical model is developed for the simulation of debris flow in landslides over a complex three dimensional topography. The model is based on a lattice, in which debris can be transferred among nearest neighbors according to established empirical relationships for granular flows. The model is then validated by comparing a simulation with reported field data. Our model is in fact a realistic elaboration of simpler ``sandpile automata'', which have in recent years been studied as supposedly paradigmatic of ``self-organized criticality''. Statistics and scaling properties of the simulation are examined, and show that the model has an intermittent behavior.

Non-Gaussian statistics in space plasma turbulence, fractal properties and pitfalls

Magnetic field fluctuations in the vicinity of the Earth's bow shock have been investigated with the aim to characterize the intermittent behaviour of strong plasma turbulence. The observed small-scale intermittency may be the signature of a multifractal process but a deeper inspection reveals caveats in such an interpretation. Several effects, including the anisotropy of the wavefield, the violation of the Taylor hypothesis and the occasional occurrence of coherent wave packets, strongly affect the higher order statistical properties. After correcting these effects, a more Gaussian and scale-invariant wavefield is recovered.
