Negative spherical perceptron

In this paper we consider the classical spherical perceptron problem. This problem and its variants have been studied in a great detail in a broad literature ranging from statistical physics and neural networks to computer science and pure geometry. Among the most well known results are those created using the machinery of statistical physics in \cite{Gar88}. They typically relate to various features ranging from the storage capacity to typical overlap of the optimal configurations and the number of incorrectly stored patterns. In \cite{SchTir02,SchTir03,TalBook} many of the predictions of the statistical mechanics were rigorously shown to be correct. In our own work \cite{StojnicGardGen13} we then presented an alternative way that can be used to study the spherical perceptrons as well. Among other things we reaffirmed many of the results obtained in \cite{SchTir02,SchTir03,TalBook} and thereby confirmed many of the predictions established by the statistical mechanics. Those mostly relate to spherical perceptrons with positive thresholds (which we will typically refer to as the positive spherical perceptrons). In this paper we go a step further and attack the negative counterpart, i.e. the perceptron with negative thresholds. We present a mechanism that can be used to analyze many features of such a model. As a concrete example, we specialize our results for a particular feature, namely the storage capacity. The results we obtain for the storage capacity seem to indicate that the negative case could be more combinatorial in nature and as such a somewhat harder challenge than the positive counterpart.

Discrete perceptrons

Perceptrons have been known for a long time as a promising tool within the neural networks theory. The analytical treatment for a special class of perceptrons started in seminal work of Gardner \cite{Gar88}. Techniques initially employed to characterize perceptrons relied on a statistical mechanics approach. Many of such predictions obtained in \cite{Gar88} (and in a follow-up \cite{GarDer88}) were later on established rigorously as mathematical facts (see, e.g. \cite{SchTir02,SchTir03,TalBook,StojnicGardGen13,StojnicGardSphNeg13,StojnicGardSphErr13}). These typically related to spherical perceptrons. A lot of work has been done related to various other types of perceptrons. Among the most challenging ones are what we will refer to as the discrete perceptrons. An introductory statistical mechanics treatment of such perceptrons was given in \cite{GutSte90}. Relying on results of \cite{Gar88}, \cite{GutSte90} characterized many of the features of several types of discrete perceptrons. We in this paper, consider a similar subclass of discrete perceptrons and provide a mathematically rigorous set of results related to their performance. As it will turn out, many of the statistical mechanics predictions obtained for discrete predictions will in fact appear as mathematically provable bounds. This will in a way emulate a similar type of behavior we observed in \cite{StojnicGardGen13,StojnicGardSphNeg13,StojnicGardSphErr13} when studying spherical perceptrons.

The heat equation shrinks Ising droplets to points

Let D be a bounded, smooth enough domain of R^2. For L>0 consider the continuous time, zero-temperature heat bath dynamics for the nearest-neighbor Ising model on (Z/L)^2 (the square lattice with lattice spacing 1/L) with initial condition such that σ_x=-1 if x\in D and σ_x=+ otherwise. We prove the following classical conjecture due to H. Spohn: In the diffusive limit where time is rescaled by L^2 and L tends to infinity, the boundary of the droplet of "-" spins follows a deterministic anisotropic curve-shortening flow, such that the normal velocity is given by the local curvature times an explicit function of the local slope. Locally, in a suitable reference frame, the evolution of the droplet boundary follows the one-dimensional heat equation. To our knowledge, this is the first proof of mean curvature-type droplet shrinking for a lattice model with genuine microscopic dynamics. An important ingredient is our recent work, where the case of convex D was solved. The other crucial point in the proof is obtaining precise regularity estimates on the deterministic curve shortening flow. This builds on geometric and analytic ideas of Grayson, Gage-Hamilton, Gage-Li, Chou-Zhu and others.

Cloaking via change of variables in elastic impedance tomography

We discuss the concept of cloaking for elastic impedance tomography, in which, we seek information on the elasticity tensor of an elastic medium from the knowledge of measurements on its boundary. We derive some theoretical results illustrated by some numerical simulations.

Weak value expansion of quantum operators and its application in stochastic matrices

It is shown that any Hermitian operator can be expanded in terms of a set of operators formed from biorthogonal basis, and the expansion coefficients are given as products of weight functions and weak values, shedding a new light on the physical interpretation of the weak value. The utility of our approach is showcased with examples of spin one-half and spin one systems, where irreversible subset of stochastic matrices describing projective measurement on a mixed state is identified.

Direct and Inverse Problems for the Heat Equation with a Dynamic type Boundary Condition

This paper considers the initial-boundary value problem for the heat equation with a dynamic type boundary condition. Under some regularity, consistency and orthogonality conditions, the existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence upon the data of the classical solution are shown by using the generalized Fourier method. This paper also investigates the inverse problem of finding a time-dependent coefficient of the heat equation from the data of integral overdetermination condition.

Mathematical treatment of the homogeneous Boltzmann equation for Maxwellian molecules in the presence of singular kernels

This paper proves the existence of weak solutions to the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for Maxwellian molecules, when the initial data are chosen from the space of all Borel probability measures on R^3 with finite second moments and the (angular) collision kernel satisfies a very weak cutoff condition. Conservation of momentum and energy is also proved for these weak solutions, without resorting to any boundedness of the entropy.

Liquid Crystal Equations with Infinite Energy Local Well-posedness and Blow Up Criterion

In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem of the incompressible liquid crystal equations in $n$ dimensions. We prove the local well-posedness of mild solutions to the liquid crystal equations with $L^\infty$ initial data, in particular, the initial energy may be infinite. We prove that the solutions are smooth with respect to the space variables away from the initial time. Based on this regularity estimate, we employ the blow up argument and Liouville type theorems to establish vorticity direction type blow up criterions for the type I mild solutions established in the present paper.

Three and four-body systems in one dimension: integrability, superintegrability and discrete symmetries

Families of three-body Hamiltonian systems in one dimension have been recently proved to be maximally superintegrable by interpreting them as one-body systems in the three-dimensional Euclidean space, examples are the Calogero, Wolfes and Tramblay Turbiner Winternitz systems. For some of these systems, we show in a new way how the superintegrability is associated with their dihedral symmetry in the three-dimensional space, the order of the dihedral symmetries being associated with the degree of the polynomial in the momenta first integrals. As a generalization, we introduce the analysis of integrability and superintegrability of four-body systems in one dimension by interpreting them as one-body systems with the symmetries of the Platonic polyhedra in the four-dimensional Euclidean space. The paper is intended as a short review of recent results in the sector, emphasizing the relevance of discrete symmetries for the superintegrability of the systems considered.

Soliton Solutions of Fractional order KdV-Burger's Equation

In this article, the new exact travelling wave solutions of the time-and space-fractional KdV-Burgers equation has been found. For this the fractional complex transformation have been implemented to convert nonlinear partial fractional differential equations to nonlinear ordinary differential equations, in the sense of the Jumarie's modified Riemann-Liouville derivative. Afterwards, the improved (G'/G)-expansion method can be implemented to celebrate the soliton solutions of KdV-Burger's equation of fractional order.

Global existence of solutions to the Einstein-massive scalar field equations with a cosmological constant for a perfect fluid on the flat Robertson-Walker space-time

In many cases a massive nonlinear scalar field can lead to accelerated expansion in cosmological models. This paper contains mathematical results on this subject for flat Robertson-Walker space-time. Global existence to the coupled Einstein-massive scalar field system which rules the dynamics of a kind of pure matter in the presence of a massive scalar field and cosmological constant is proved, under the assumption that the scalar field ? is a non-decreasing function, in Robertson-Walker1 space-time; asymptotic behaviour are investigated in the case of a cosmological constant bounded from below by a strictly negative constant depending only on the massive scalar field.

Equivalence of string and fusion loop-spin structures

The importance of the fusion relation of loops was recognized in the context of spin structures on the loop space by Stolz and Teichner and further developed by Waldorf. On a spin manifold M the equivalence classes of `fusive' spin structures on the loop space LM, incorporating the fusion property, strong regularity and reparameterization-invariance, are shown to be in 1-1 correspondence with equivalence classes of string structures on M. The identification is through the affine space of `string' cohomology classes considered by Redden.

Dynamics of small solutions in KdV type equations: decay inside the linearly dominated region

In this paper we prove that all small, uniformly in time $L^1\cap H^1$ bounded solutions to KdV and related perturbations must converge to zero, as time goes to infinity, locally in an increasing-in-time region of space of order $t^{1/2}$ around any compact set in space. This set is included in the linearly dominated dispersive region $x\ll t$. Moreover, we prove this result independently of the well-known supercritical character of KdV scattering. In particular, no standing breather-like nor solitary wave structures exists in this particular regime. For the proof, we make use of well-chosen weighted virial identities. The main new idea employed here with respect to previous results is the fact that the $L^1$ integral is subcritical with respect to the KdV scaling.

Weyl sums and the Lyapunov exponent for the skew-shift Schrödinger cocycle

We study the one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operator with the skew-shift potential $2λ\cos\left(2π\left(\binom{j}{2} ω+jy+x\right)\right)$. This potential is long conjectured to behave like a random one, i.e., it is expected to produce Anderson localization for arbitrarily small coupling constants $λ>0$. In this paper, we introduce a novel perturbative approach for studying the zero-energy Lyapunov exponent $L(λ)$ at small $λ$. Our main results establish that, to second order in perturbation theory, a natural upper bound on $L(λ)$ is fully consistent with $L(λ)$ being positive and satisfying the usual Figotin-Pastur type asymptotics $L(λ)\sim Cλ^2$ as $λ\to 0$. The analogous quantity behaves completely differently in the Almost-Mathieu model, whose zero-energy Lyapunov exponent vanishes for $λ<1$. The main technical work consists in establishing good lower bounds on the exponential sums (quadratic Weyl sums) that appear in our perturbation series.

Lie Symmetries, Painlevé analysis and global dynamics for the temporal equation of radiating stars

We study the temporal equation of radiating stars by using three powerful methods for the analysis of nonlinear differential equations. Specifically, we investigate the global dynamics for the given master ordinary differential equation to understand the evolution of solutions for various initial conditions as also to investigate the existence of asymptotic solutions. Moreover, with the application of Lie's theory, we can reduce the order of the master differential equation, while an exact similarity solution is determined. Finally, the master equation possesses the Painlevé property, which means that the analytic solution can be expressed in terms of a Laurent expansion.

Poincaré Invariant Quantum Field Theories With Twisted Internal Symmetries

Following up the work of [1] on deformed algebras, we present a class of Poincaré invariant quantum field theories with particles having deformed internal symmetries. The twisted quantum fields discussed in this work satisfy commutation relations different from the usual bosonic/fermionic commutation relations. Such twisted fields by construction are nonlocal in nature. Despite this nonlocality we show that it is possible to construct local interaction Hamiltonians which satisfy cluster decomposition principle and are Lorentz invariant. We further illustrate these ideas by considering global SU(N) symmetries. Specifically we show that twisted internal symmetries can significantly simplify the discussion of the marginal deformations (β-deformations) of the N=4 SUSY theories.

On Three Dimensional Quiver Gauge Theories and Integrability

In this work we compare different descriptions of the space of vacua of certain three dimensional N=4 superconformal field theories, compactified on a circle and mass-deformed to N=2 in a canonical way. The original N=4 theories are known to admit two distinct mirror descriptions as linear quiver gauge theories, and many more descriptions which involve the compactification on a segment of four-dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Each description gives a distinct presentation of the moduli space of vacua. Our main result is to establish the precise dictionary between these presentations. We also study the relationship between this gauge theory problem and integrable systems. The space of vacua in the linear quiver gauge theory description is related by Nekrasov-Shatashvili duality to the eigenvalues of quantum integrable spin chain Hamiltonians. The space of vacua in the four-dimensional gauge theory description is related to the solution of certain integrable classical many-body problems. Thus we obtain numerous dualities between these integrable models.
