Hubbard-U Band-Structure Methods

The last decade has seen a large increase in the number of electronic-structure calculations that involve adding a Hubbard term to the local density approximation band-structure Hamiltonian. The Hubbard term is then solved either at the mean-field level or with sophisticated many-body techniques such as dynamical mean field theory. We review the physics underlying these approaches and discuss their strengths and weaknesses in terms of the larger issues of electronic structure that they involve. In particular, we argue that the common assumptions made to justify such calculations are inconsistent with what the calculations actually do. Although many of these calculations are often treated as essentially first-principles calculations, in fact, we argue that they should be viewed from an entirely different point of view, viz., as phenomenological many-body corrections to band-structure theory. Alternatively, they may also be considered to be just a more complex Hubbard model than the simple one- or few-band models traditionally used in many-body theories of solids.

Coulomb Disorder Effects on ARPES and NQR Spectra in Cuprates

The role of Coulomb disorder, either of extrinsic origin or introduced by dopant ions in undoped and lightly-doped cuprates, is studied. We demonstrate that charged surface defects in an insulator lead to a Gaussian broadening of the Angle-Resolved Photoemisson Spectroscopy (ARPES) lines. The effect is due to the long-range nature of the Coulomb interaction. A tiny surface concentration of defects about a fraction of one per cent is sufficient to explain the line broadening observed in Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$, La$_2$CuO$_{4}$, and Ca$_{2}$CuO$_{2}$Cl$_{2}$. Due to the Coulomb screening, the ARPES spectra evolve dramatically with doping, changing their shape from a broad Gaussian form to narrow Lorentzian ones. To understand the screening mechanism and the lineshape evolution in detail, we perform Hartree-Fock simulations with random positions of surface defects and dopant ions. To check validity of the model we calculate the Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) lineshapes as a function of doping and reproduce the experimentally observed NQR spectra. Our study also indicates opening of a substantial Coulomb gap at the chemical potential. For a surface CuO$_2$ layer the value of the gap is of the order of 10 meV while in the bulk it is reduced to the value about a few meV.

Unambiguous evidence for nearly isotropic s-wave gap in the bulk of optimally electron-doped Nd_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO$_{4-y}

We address an important issue as to whether bulk-sensitive data of Raman scattering, optical conductivity, magnetic penetration depth, directional point-contact tunneling spectra, and nonmagnetic pair-breaking effect in optimally electron-doped Nd_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4-y} support a nodeless s-wave or d-wave superconducting gap. We numerically calculate Raman intensities, directional point-contact tunneling spectra, and nonmagnetic pair-breaking effect in terms of both s-wave and d-wave gap symmetries. We find that all these bulk-sensitive data are in quantitative agreement with a nearly isotropic s-wave gap. The fact that T_{c} is nearly independent of the residual resistivity rules out any d-wave gap symmetry.

Spin freezing and dynamics in Ca_{3}Co_{2-x}Mn_{x}O_{6} (x ~ 0.95) investigated with implanted muons: disorder in the anisotropic next-nearest neighbor Ising model

We present a muon-spin relaxation investigation of the Ising chain magnet Ca_{3}Co_{2-x}Mn_{x}O_{6} (x~0.95). We find dynamic spin fluctuations persisting down to the lowest measured temperature of 1.6 K. The previously observed transition at around T ~18 K is interpreted as a subtle change in dynamics for a minority of the spins coupling to the muon that we interpret as spins locking into clusters. The dynamics of this fraction of spins freeze below a temperature T_{SF}~8 K, while a majority of spins continue to fluctuate. An explanation of the low temperature behavior is suggested in terms of the predictions of the anisotropic next-nearest-neighbor Ising model.

Exact eigenfunctions of FQHE systems at fractional filling factors 1/q. I. Formal results

Eigenstates of the FQHE hamiltonian problem after to be projected on the LLL are determined for filling factors 1/q, with q an odd number. The solutions are found for an infinite class of finite samples in which the Coulomb potential is periodically extended. Therefore, a thermodynamic limit solution is also identified. The results suggest the presence of integrability properties in FQHE systems. The many particle states are simple Slater determinants constructed with special single particle states. These orbitals are defined as powers of order q of "composite fermion" like wavefunctions associated to a reduced magnetic field B/q. At the same time, those "composite fermion" states were obtained by factorizing and canceling fixed position (quasi-momentum independent) zeros in previously derived exact Hartree-Fock orbitals. A formula for the energy per particle of the FQHE states is given for finite samples as well as for the thermodynamic limit state. As a side result, the same "composite fermions" like orbitals are employed to construct variational wavefunctions of the system, showing zeros of order q as two electrons approach each other, as Laughlin states do. The long range spatial correlation associated to the starting HF solutions may further reduce the energy of these states.

Pseudogap, non-Fermi-liquid behavior, and particle-hole asymmetry in the 2D Hubbard model

The effect of doping in the two-dimensional Hubbard model is studied within finite temperature exact diagonalization combined with cluster dynamical mean field theory. By employing a mixed basis involving cluster sites and bath molecular orbitals for the projection of the lattice Green's function onto 2x2 clusters, a considerably more accurate description of the low frequency properties of the self-energy is achieved than in a pure site picture. The transition from Fermi-liquid to non-Fermi-liquid behavior for decreasing hole doping is studied as a function of Coulomb energy, next-nearest neighbor hopping, and temperature. In particular, the self-energy component Sigma_X associated with X=(pi,0) is shown to exhibit an onset of non-Fermi-liquid behavior as the hole doping decreases below a critical value delta_c. The imaginary part of Sigma_X(omega) then develops a collective mode above E_F, which exhibits a distinct dispersion with doping. Accordingly, the real part of Sigma_X(omega) has a positive slope above E_F, giving rise to an increasing particle-hole asymmetry as the system approaches the Mott transition. This behavior is consistent with the removal of spectral weight from electron states close to E_F and the opening of a pseudogap which increases with decreasing doping. The phase diagram reveals that delta_c = 0.15 ... 0.20 for various system parameters. For electron doping, the collective mode of Sigma_X(omega) and the concomitant pseudogap are located below the Fermi energy which is consistent the removal of spectral weight from hole states just below E_F. The critical doping which marks the onset of non-Fermi-liquid behavior, is systematically smaller than for hole doping.

A new collective phenomenon arising from spin anisotropic perturbations to a Heisenberg square lattice manifested in paramagnetic resonance experiments

We report unexpected behaviour in a family of Cu spin- 1/2 systems, in which an apparent gap in the low energy magneto-optical absorption spectrum opens at low temperature. This previously unreported collective phenomenon arises at temperatures where the energy of the dominant exchange interaction exceeds the thermal energy. Simulations of the observed shifts in electron paramagnetic resonance spectral weight, which include spin anisotropy, reproduce this behavior yielding the magnitude of the spin anisotropy in these compounds.

Circularly polarized resonant soft x-ray diffraction study of helical magnetism in hexaferrite

Magnetic spiral structures can exhibit ferroelectric moments as recently demonstrated in various multiferroic materials. In such cases the helicity of the magnetic spiral is directly correlated with the direction of the ferroelectric moment and measurement of the helicity of magnetic structures is of current interest. Soft x-ray resonant diffraction is particularly advantageous because it combines element selectivity with a large magnetic cross-section. We calculate the polarization dependence of the resonant magnetic x-ray cross-section (electric dipole transition) for the basal plane magnetic spiral in hexaferrite Ba0.8Sr1.2Zn2Fe12O22 and deduce its domain population using circular polarized incident radiation. We demonstrate there is a direct correlation between the diffracted radiation and the helicity of the magnetic spiral.

Evidence of kinetically arrested supercooled phases in the pervoskite oxide NdNiO$_3$

We report the time and temperature dependent response of thermopower in the non-magnetic perovskite oxide NdNiO$_3$. We find that on cooling below the metal-insulator transition temperature the system evolves into a phase separated state which consists of supercooled metallic and insulating phases. This phase separated state exhibits out of equilibrium features such as cooling rate dependence and time dependence. The existence of these dynamical features is attributed to the transformation of supercooled metallic phases to the insulating state. On cooling a small fraction of supercooled phases gets kinetically arrested in a glassy state and these supercooled phases remain in that state down to low temperature. In the heating cycle the arrested states dearrest above 150 K and this results in the reappearance of time dependent features.

Temperature Dependence Of Cuprate Superconductors' Order Parameter

A model of charged hole-pair bosons, with long range Coulomb interactions and very weak interlayer coupling, is used to calculate the order parameter -Phi- of underdoped cuprates. Model parameters are extracted from experimental superfluid densities and plasma frequencies. The temperature dependence -Phi(T)- is characterized by a 'trapezoidal' shape. At low temperatures, it declines slowly due to harmonic phase fluctuations which are suppressed by anisotropic plasma gaps. Above the single layer Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) temperature, Phi(T) falls rapidly toward the three dimensional transition temperature. The theoretical curves are compared to c-axis superfluid density data by H. Kitano et al., (J. Low Temp. Phys. 117, 1241 (1999)) and to the -transverse nodal velocity- measured by angular resolved photoemmission spectra on BSCCO samples by W.S. Lee et al., (Nature 450, 81 (2007)), and by A. Kanigel, et al., (Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 157001 (2007)).

Nonperturbative Green's function technique for nonequilibrium steady state

Nonperturbative dynamic theory has a particular advantage in studying the transport in a quantum impurity system in a steady state. Here, we develop a new approach for obtaining the retarded Green's function expressed in resolvent form. We use the Heisenberg picture to facilitate dynamic theory and propose a new systematic method of collecting the basis vectors spanning the Liouville space, which is the most crucial step in obtaining the resolvent Green's function. We obtain all the linearly independent basis vectors for studying the single-impurity Anderson models with one and two reservoirs. The latter is an appropriate model for studying the Kondo phenomenon in a steady state when a bias is applied. This is one of long standing subjects in theoretical condensed matter physics.

Exact quantum spin liquids with Fermi surfaces in spin-half models

An emergent Fermi surface in a Mott insulator, an exotic quantum spin liquid state, was suggested by Anderson in 1987. After a quick support for its existence in spin-half Heisenberg model in a square lattice in a RVB mean field theory, pseudo Fermi surface was found only recently in an exactly solvable spin-3/2 model by Yao, Zhang and Kivelson. We show that a minimal spin-half Kitaev model on a decorated square lattice exhibits a Fermi surface. Volume and shape of the Fermi surface change with exchange couplings or on addition of a 3 spin interaction terms.

Evidence for the constancy of U in the Mott transition of V2O3

We have performed high-resolution hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy for the metal-insulator transition (MIT) system (V(1-x)Cr(x))2O3 in the paramagnetic metal, paramagnetic insulator and antiferromagentic insulator phases. The quality of the spectra enables us to conclude that the on-site Coulomb energy U does not change through the MIT, which eliminate all but one theoretical MIT scenario in this paradigm material.

Non-equilibrium dynamics of interacting Fermi systems in quench experiments

We describe the dynamics of two component non-interacting ultracold Fermions which are initially in thermal equilibrium and undergo a rapid quench to either the repulsive or attractive side of a Feshbach resonance. The short time dynamics is dominated by the exponentially growing collective modes. We study the Stoner instability and formation of ferromagnetic textures on the repulsive side, and the pairing instability towards BCS or FFLO-like states (determined by the population imbalance) on the attractive side. In each case, we evaluate the growth rate of unstable modes and predict the typical lengthscale of textures to be formed.

Time-dependent theory of non-linear response and current fluctuations

A general non-linear response theory is derived for an arbitrary time-dependent Hamiltonian, not necessarily obeying time-reversal symmetry. This allows us to obtain a greatly generalized Kubo type formula. Applied to a mesoscopic system with any type of interactions, and coupled to multiple probes and gates with arbitrarily time-dependent voltages, we derive current-conserving differential conductance and current fluctuation matrices obeying a generalized Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem. This relation provides a common explanation for asymmetries of the excess noise in several non-linear mesoscopic systems, as well as of its surprising negative sign.

Quantum Imaging of Topologically Unpaired Spin-Polarized Dirac Fermions

The motion of a relativistic particle is linked to its spin by the Dirac equation. Remarkably, electrons in two-dimensional materials can mimic such Dirac particles but must always appear in pairs of opposite spin chirality. Using topological ideas of chiral boundary electrons wrapping a three-dimensional crystal with tuned spin-orbit coupling, we show that elusive unpaired Dirac fermions exist on the surface of a topological insulator parent matrix, pure antimony. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we image coherent quantum interference between these particles, map their helical spin texture, and ultimately observe a transition to a single Dirac fermion distinguished by backscattering suppression via Berry phase interference. The robust dynamics of these unique spin-polarized carriers envisage future applications in spintronics and topological quantum computation.

Absence of nodes in the energy gap of the high-temperature electron-doped Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO4-y superconductor using thermal conductivity and specific heat measurements

We present data analyses of the thermal conductivity and specific heat of electron-doped Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO4-y. The zero-field thermal conductivity and specific heat of this optimally electrondoped system can be only explained by a nodeless gap symmetry. The magnetic-field dependence of the electronic specific heat in the vortex state is in quantitative agreement with an s-wave theory. Our quantitative data analyses provide bulk evidence for a nodeless gap symmetry in optimally electron-doped cuprates.

High-Order Coupled Cluster Method (CCM) Formalism 1: Ground- and Excited-State Properties of Lattice Quantum Spin Systems with $s >= 1/2$

The coupled cluster method (CCM) is a powerful and widely applied technique of modern-day quantum many-body theory. It has been used with great success in order to understand the properties of quantum magnets at zero temperature. This is due largely to the application of computational techniques that allow the method to be applied to high orders of approximation using localised approximation schemes, e.g., such as the LSUB$m$ scheme. In this article, the high-order CCM formalism for the ground and excited states of quantum magnetic systems are extended to those with spin quantum number $s \ge \frac 12$. Solution strategies for the ket- and bra-state equations are also considered. Aspects of extrapolation of CCM expectation values are discussed and future topics regarding extrapolations are presented.
