The GBC mass for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds

The paper consists of two parts. In the first part, by using the Gauss-Bonnet curvature, which is a natural generalization of the scalar curvature, we introduce a higher order mass, the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern mass $m^{\H}_k$, for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds and show that it is a geometric invariant. Moreover, we prove a positive mass theorem for this new mass for asymptotically hyperbolic graphs and establish a relationship between the corresponding Penrose type inequality for this mass and weighted Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities in the hyperbolic space $\H^n$. In the second part, we establish these weighted Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities in $\H^n$ for any horospherical convex hypersurface $Σ$. As an application, we obtain an optimal Penrose type inequality for the new mass defined in the first part for asymptotically hyperbolic graphs with a horizon type boundary $Σ$, provided that a dominant energy condition $\tilde L_k\ge0$ holds. Both inequalities are optimal.

Accelerating cosmology in modified gravity: from convenient $F(R)$ or string-inspired theory to bimetric $F(R)$ gravity

We consider modified gravity which may describe the early-time inflation and/or late-time cosmic acceleration of the universe. In particular, we discuss the properties of $F(R)$, $F(G)$, string-inspired and scalar-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravities, including their FRW equations and fluid or scalar-tensor description. Simplest accelerating cosmologies are investigated and possibility of unified description of the inflation with dark energy is described. The cosmological reconstruction program which permits to get the requested universe evolution from modified gravity is developed. As some extension, massive $F(R)$ bigravity which is ghost-free theory is presented. Its scalar-tensor form turns out to be the easiest formulation. The cosmological reconstruction method for such bigravity is presented. The unified description of inflation with dark energy in $F(R)$ bigravity turns out to be possible.

State space modelling and data analysis exercises in LISA Pathfinder

LISA Pathfinder is a mission planned by the European Space Agency to test the key technologies that will allow the detection of gravitational waves in space. The instrument on-board, the LISA Technology package, will undergo an exhaustive campaign of calibrations and noise characterisation campaigns in order to fully describe the noise model. Data analysis plays an important role in the mission and for that reason the data analysis team has been developing a toolbox which contains all the functionalities required during operations. In this contribution we give an overview of recent activities, focusing on the improvements in the modelling of the instrument and in the data analysis campaigns performed both with real and simulated data.

False vacuum as an unstable state: possible cosmological implications

Recent LHC results concerning the mass of the Higgs boson indicate that the vacuum in our Universe may be unstable. We analyze properties of unstable vacuum states from the point of view of the quantum theory of unstable states. From the literature it is known that some of false vacuum states may survive up to times when their survival probability has a non-exponential form. At times much latter than the transition time, when contributions to the survival probability of its exponential and non-exponential parts are comparable, the survival probability as a function of time $t$ has an inverse power-like form. We show that at this time region the instantaneous energy of the false vacuum states tends to the energy of the true vacuum state as $1/t^{2}$ for $t \to \infty$. Properties of the instantaneous energy at transition times are also analyzed for a given model. It is shown that at this time region large and rapid fluctuations of the instantaneous energy take place. This suggests analogous behavior of the cosmological constant at these time regions.

Are rigid non-inertial frames of reference really rigid?

In this paper the notion of the rigid frame of reference within special relativity is analysed. Three definitions of rigidity are formulated. By using several examples of non-inertial frames, it is shown that these definitions are not equivalent. It is also shown that so called Möller rigid non-inertial frames are locally rigid, but do not exhibit global rigidity. The physical meaning of this phenomenon is discussed, as well as its relation to the non-Euclidean nature of space in non-inertial frames of reference. (russian version)

Embeddings for solutions of Einstein equations

We study isometric embeddings of some solutions of the Einstein equations with suffciently high symmetries into a flat ambient space. We briefly describe a method for constructing surfaces with a given symmetry. We discuss all minimal embeddings of the Schwarzschild metric obtained using this method and show how the method can be used to construct all minimal embeddings for the Friedmann models. We classify all the embeddings in terms of realizations of symmetries of the corresponding solutions.

Relativistic Quantum Communication

In this Ph.D. thesis, I investigate the communication abilities of non-inertial observers and the precision to which they can measure parametrized states. I introduce relativistic quantum field theory with field quantisation, and the definition and transformations of mode functions in Minkowski, Schwarzschild and Rindler spaces. I introduce information theory by discussing the nature of information, defining the entropic information measures, and highlighting the differences between classical and quantum information. I review the field of relativistic quantum information. We investigate the communication abilities of an inertial observer to a relativistic observer hovering above a Schwarzschild black hole, using the Rindler approximation. We compare both classical communication and quantum entanglement generation of the state merging protocol, for both the single and dual rail encodings. We find that while classical communication remains finite right up to the horizon, the quantum entanglement generation tends to zero. We investigate the observers' abilities to precisely measure the parameter of a state that is communicated between Alice and Rob. This parameter was encoded to either the amplitudes of a single excitation state or the phase of a NOON state. With NOON states the dual rail encoding provided greater precision, which is different to the results for the other situations. The precision was maximum for a particular number of excitations in the NOON state. We calculated the bipartite communication for Alice-Rob and Alice-AntiRob beyond the single mode approximation. Rob and AntiRob are causally disconnected counter-accelerating observers. We found that Alice must choose in advance with whom, Rob or AntiRob she wants to create entanglement using a particular setup. She could communicate classically to both.

Towards the rotating scalar-vacuum black holes

The problem of merging in black holes the rotation and a massless scalar field is treated. It is argued in the comment that the Kerr-like and Demianski-like metrics in General Relativity with a free massless scalar field or in the free Brans-Dicke theory, claimed so far in the literature as an application of the Newman-Janis algorithm, prove to be invalid. Finding the missing stationary axisymmetric scalar-vacuum solution(s), containing the Kerr one, is still urgent.

Stringy Corrections to the Classical Tests of General Relativity

String theory imposes modifications to Einstein's equations of classical general relativity. Consequently, we calculate the additional corrections to the classical tests: the perihelion precession of Mercury, the deflection of light rays by the sun, and the gravitational redshift which should be present if these modified equations hold. In each case, we determine --- quite consistently with expectations --- that the stringy effects are much too small to be measured.

String Theory has no Isotropic Solution for the Modified Einstein's Equations without the Dilaton

We investigate the modification to Einstein's vacuum field equations which is imposed by string theory when the dilaton field is ignored. Including the cosmological constant in all calculations, we prove that such a theory of gravity admits no static isotropic solution. We then show that any isotropic solution of the equations in question must necessarily be static, therefore proving that no isotropic solution exists for this stringy modification to gravity.

Electromagnetically induced vorticity control in a quantum fluid velocity field

A new method is reported by which it is possible to induce certain flux configurations of desired characteristics via electromagnetic means into the overall quantum probability current of a many-body system in the Madelung hydrodynamic picture. Some indicative applications are also considered with emphasis in HTC and gravitational wave research.

Einstein, the reality of space, and the action-reaction principle

Einstein regarded as one of the triumphs of his 1915 theory of gravity --- the general theory of relativity --- that it vindicated the action--reaction principle, while Newtonian mechanics as well as his 1905 special theory of relativity supposedly violated it. In this paper we examine why Einstein came to emphasise this position several years after the development of general relativity. Several key considerations are relevant to the story: the connection Einstein originally saw between Mach's analysis of inertia and both the equivalence principle and the principle of general covariance, the waning of Mach's influence owing to de Sitter's 1917 results, and Einstein's detailed correspondence with Moritz Schlick in 1920.

Creating the Universe Without a Singularity and the Cosmological Constant Problem

We consider a non singular origin for the Universe starting from an Einstein static Universe in the framework of a theory which uses two volume elements $\sqrt{-{g}}d^{4}x$ and $Φd^{4}x$, where $Φ$ is a metric independent density, also curvature, curvature square terms, first order formalism and for scale invariance a dilaton field $ϕ$ are considered in the action. In the Einstein frame we also add a cosmological term that parametrizes the zero point fluctuations. The resulting effective potential for the dilaton contains two flat regions, for $ϕ\rightarrow \infty$ relevant for the non singular origin of the Universe and $ϕ\rightarrow -\infty$, describing our present Universe. Surprisingly, avoidance of singularities and stability as $ϕ\rightarrow \infty$ imply a positive but small vacuum energy as $ϕ\rightarrow -\infty$. Zero vacuum energy density for the present universe is the "threshold" for universe creation. This requires a modified emergent universe scenario, where the universe although very old, it does have a beginning.

Dust time in quantum cosmology

We give a formulation of quantum cosmology with a pressureless dust and arbitrary additional matter fields. The dust provides a natural time gauge corresponding to a cosmic time, yielding a physical time independent Hamiltonian. The approach simplifies the analysis of both Wheeler-deWitt and loop quantum cosmology models, broadening the applicability of the latter.

Bimetric Gravity, Variable Speed of Light Cosmology and Planck2013

A bimetric gravity model with a variable speed of light is shown to be in agreement with the results reported from the Planck satellite in 2013. The predicted scalar mode spectral index is $n_s\approx 0.96$ and its running is $α_s\approx 8\times 10^{-4}$ when the fundamental length scale $\ell_0$ in the model is fixed to be $\ell_0\approx 10^5\ell_P$, where $\ell_P$ is the Planck length $\ell_P=1.62\times 10^{-33}\,{\rm cm}$, giving the observed CMB fluctuations: $δ_H\approx 10^{-5}$. The enlarged lightcone ensures that horizon and flatness problems are solved. The model is free from many of the fine-tuning problems of the inflationary models and the fluctuations that form the seeds of structure formation do not lead to a chaotic inhomogeneous universe and the need for a multiverse.

Initial Friedmann universe, its spatial flatness, matter creation, and the cosmological term

In the Friedmann equations, an infinite initial density is avoided only when the universe is spatially flat. With such equations being then valid when the scale factor $a=0$, the universe must also be in the state of vacuum when $a$ is infinitesimal. Matter creation thus largely comes from nonlinearity of the Friedmann equations at a finite $a$. For the correspondence between such an initial vacuum and the Friedmann universe, therefore, a vacuum density is suggested to be gravitationally significant only when it could also have a matter phase. The effective cosmological term is then due to such a vacuum density.
