Birational geometry of symplectic resolutions of nilpotent orbits II

In this paper we shall study symplectic resolutions of a nilpotent orbit closure of a complex simple Lie algebra \g. We shall introduce an equivalence relation in the set of parabolic subgroups of $G$ in terms of marked Dynkin diagrams. We start with a nilpotent orbit closure which admits a Springer resolution with a parabolic subgroup $P_0$ of $G$. Then we prove that all symplectic resolution of the nilpotent closure are Springer resolutions with $P$ which are equivalent to $P_0$. Here all symplectic resolutions are connected by Mukai flops. We need three types of Mukai flops (types A, D and E_6) in connecting symplectic resolutions. In particular, Mukai flops of type E_6 are new. All arguments of Part I : math.AG/0404072 which use flags, are replaced by those which use only Dynkin diagrams.

The Residual Intersection Formula of Type II Exceptional Curves

The paper is a part of our program to build up a theory of couting immersed nodal curve on algebraic surfaces, as an enumerative Riemann-Roch theory (outlined in math.AG/0405113). In this paper, we discuss the excess intersection theory of the so-called type two exceptional curves, which plays the analogous role as the "index of speciality" (h^2) in the classical surface Riemann-Roch formula. We show that the algebraic family Seiberg-Witten theory of type I exceptional curves can be generalized to the theory of type II exceptional curves when the family moduli spaces are not regular of the expected dimension.

Integrating infinite-dimensional Lie algebras by a Tannaka reconstruction (Part II)

Let g be a Lie algebra over a field F of characteristic zero, let C be a certain tensor category of representations of g, and C-du a certain category of duals. In arXiv:math.AG/0409053 we associated to C and C-du by a Tannaka reconstruction a monoid M with a coordinate ring F[M] of matrix coefficients, as well as a Lie algebra Lie(M). We interpreted this situation algebraic geometrically. In particular, we showed: If the Lie algebra g is generated by one-parameter elements, then it identifies in a natural way with a subalgebra of Lie(M), and there exists a subgroup of the unit group of M, which is dense in M. We now introduce the coordinate ring of regular functions on this dense subgroup, as well as the algebra of linear regular functions on the universal enveloping algebra of g, and investigate their relation. We investigate and describe various coordinate rings of matrix coefficients associated to categories of integrable representations of g. We specialize to integrable representations of Kac-Moody algebras and free Lie algebras. Some results on coordinate rings of Kac-Moody groups obtained by V. G. Kac and D. Peterson, some coordinate rings of the associated groups of linear algebraic integrable Lie algebras defined by V. G. Kac, and some results on coordinate rings of free Kac-Moody groups obtained by Y. Billig and A. Pianzola fit into this context. We determine the Tannaka monoid associated to the full subcategory of integrable representations in the category O of a Kac-Moody algebra and to its category of full duals. Its Zariski-open dense unit group is the formal Kac-Moody group. We give various descriptions of its coordinate ring of matrix coefficients. We show that its Lie algebra is the formal Kac-Moody algebra.

Pluricanonical systems of projective varieties of general type II

This is a revised version of the second half of my paper math.AG/9909021. We prove that there exists a positive integer $ν_{n}$ depending only on $n$ such that for every smooth projective $n$-fold of general type $X$ defined over complex numbers, $\mid mK_{X}\mid$ gives a birational rational map from $X$ into a projective space for every $m\geq ν_{n}$.

A new Invariant for Plane Curve Singularities

Greuel, Lossen and Shustin gave a general sufficient numerical condition for the T-smoothness (smoothness and expected dimension) of equisingular families of plane curves. This condition involves a new invariant γfor plane curve singularities, and it is conjectured to be asymptotically proper. In math.AG/0308247, similar sufficient numerical conditions are obtained for the T-smoothness of equisingular families on various classes surfaces. These conditions involve a series of invariants γ_a, 0 <= a <= 1, with γ_1=γ. In the present paper we compute (respectively give bounds for) these invariants for semiquasihomogeneous singularities.

Instanton counting via affine Lie algebras II: from Whittaker vectors to the Seiberg-Witten prepotential

We introduce the notion of the (instanton part of the) Seiberg-Witten prepotential for general Schrodinger operators with periodic potential. In the case when the operator in question is integrable we show how to compute the prepotential in terms of period integrals; this implies that in the integrable case our definition of the prepotential coincides with the one that has been extensively studied in both mathematical and physical literature. As an application we give a proof of Nekrasov's conjecture connecting certain "instanton counting" partition function for an arbitrary simple group G with the prepotential of the Toda integrable system associated with the affine Lie algebra whose affine Dynkin diagram is dual to that of the affinization of the Lie algebra of G (for G=SL(n) this conjecture was proved earlier in the works of Nekrasov-Okounkov and Nakajima-Yoshioka). Our proof is totally different and it is based on the results of the paper math.AG/0401409 by the first author.

Equivariant-constructible Koszul duality for dual toric varieties

For a pair of affine toric varieties X and Y defined by dual cones, we define an equivalence between two triangulated categories. The first is a mixed version of the equivariant derived category of X and the second is a mixed version of the derived category of sheaves on Y which are locally constant with unipotent monodromy on each orbit. This equivalence satisfies the Koszul duality formalism of Beilinson, Ginzburg, and Soergel. A similar duality was constructed in math.AG/0308216; this new approach is more canonical.

Length, multiplicity, and multiplier ideals

Let (R,m) be an n-dimensional regular local ring, essentially of finite type over a field of characteristic zero. In this paper we study the relationship between the singularities of the scheme defined by an m-primary ideal I of R and the multiplier ideals J(I^c), with c varying among the positive rational numbers. In particular, we prove that, for every nonnegative integer k, the Samuel multiplicity of I is greater or equal to (n+k)^n/c^n whenever J(I^c) is contained in the (k+1)-th power of the maximal ideal m. This formula generalizes an inequality on log canonical thresholds previously obtained by Ein, Mustaţǎ and the author of this paper (arXiv:math.AG/0205171). A refined inequality is also shown to hold for small dimensions, and similar results valid for a generalization of test ideals in positive characteristics are presented.

Ax-Kochen-Er{š}ov Theorems for $p$-adic integrals and motivic integration

This survey paper, to appear in he proceedings of the Miami Winter School ``Geometric Methods in Algebra and Number Theory'', is concerned with extending classical results à la Ax-Kochen-Er{š}ov to $p$-adic integrals in a motivic setting, using the framework of constructible motivic functions we introduced in math.AG/0410203. We conclude the paper by discussing briefly the relevance of our results to the study of orbital integrals and the Fundamental Lemma.

Variation of parabolic cohomology and Poincare duality

We continue our study of the variation of parabolic cohomology (math.AG/0310139) and derive an exact formula for the underlying Poincare duality. As an illustration of our methods, we compute the monodromy of the Picard-Euler system and its invariant Hermitian form, reproving a classical theorem of Picard.

Theta functions of arbitrary order and their derivatives

In this paper we establish the relationships between theta functions of arbitrary order and their derivatives. We generalize our previous work math.AG/0310085 and prove that for any n>1 the map sending an abelian variety to the set of Gauss images of its points of order 2n is an embedding into an appropriate Grassmannian (note that for n=1, i.e. points of order 2, we only get generic injectivity). We further discuss the generalizations of Jacobi's derivative formula for any dimension and any order. The series of embedding of the level covers of moduli spaces of principally polarized abelian varieties into Grassmannians that we define can be considered as the odd counterpart of the classical embeddings into projective spaces, by taking the values of even theta constants, considered by Igusa and Mumford.

Functoriality of the coniveau filtration

There is a natural descending filtration on the singular cohomology of a complex smooth projective variety called the coniveau filtration. The generalized Hodge conjecture would imply, rather trivially, that the coniveau filtration is compatible with pushforwards, pullbacks and products. The purpose of this paper is to prove this statement unconditionally. This completes the argument in math.AG/0102070.

Towards relative invariants of real symplectic 4-manifolds

Let $(X, ω, c_X)$ be a real symplectic 4-manifold with real part $R X$. Let $L \subset R X$ be a smooth curve such that $[L] = 0 \in H_1 (R X ; Z / 2Z)$. We construct invariants under deformation of the quadruple $(X, ω, c_X, L)$ by counting the number of real rational $J$-holomorphic curves which realize a given homology class $d$, pass through an appropriate number of points and are tangent to $L$. As an application, we prove a relation between the count of real rational $J$-holomorphic curves done in math.AG/0303145 and the count of reducible real rational curves done in math.SG/0502355. Finally, we show how these techniques also allow to extract an integer valued invariant from a classical problem of real enumerative geometry, namely about counting the number of real plane conics tangent to five given generic real conics.

A Sextic with 35 Cusps

Recently, W. Barth and S. Rams discussed sextics with up to 30 $A_2$-singularities (also called cusps) and their connection to coding theory [math.AG/0403018]. In the present paper, we find a sextic with 35 cusps within a four-parameter family of surfaces of degree 6 in projective three-space with dihedral symmetry $D_5$. This narrows the possibilities for the maximum number $μ_{A_2}(6)$ of $A_2$-singularities on a sextic to $35 \le μ_{A_2}(6) \le 37$. To construct this surface, we use a general algorithm in characteristic zero for finding hypersurfaces with many singularities within a family.

The bipartite Brill-Gordan locus and angular momentum

This paper is a sequel to math.AG/0411110. Let P denote the projective space of degree d forms in n+1 variables. Let e denote an integer < d/2, and consider the subvariety X of forms which factor as L^{d-e} M^e for some linear forms L,M. In the language of our earlier paper, this is the Brill-Gordan locus associated to the partition (d-e,e). In this paper we calculate the Castelnuovo regularity of X precisely, and moreover show that X is r-normal for r at least 3. In the case of binary forms, we give a classical invariant-theoretic description of the defining equations of this locus in terms of covariants of d-ics. Modulo standard cohomological arguments, the proof crucially relies upon showing that certain 3j-symbols from the quantum theory of angular momentum are nonzero.

A presentation for the Chow ring of \bar{M}_{0,2}(P^1,2)

We give a presentation for the Chow ring of the moduli space of degree two stable maps from two-pointed rational curves to P^1. Also, integrals of of all degree four monomials in the hyperplane pullbacks and boundary divisors of this ring are computed using equivariant intersection theory. Finally, the presentation is used to give a new computation of the (previously known) values of the genus zero, degree two, two-pointed gravitational correlators of P^1. This article is a sequel to math.AG/0501322, although the only information truly needed from that article is the Poincare polynomial of the moduli space under consideration.
