Core Dynamics of Multi-Armed Spirals in Rayleigh-Benard Convection

We report experimental observations of the core dynamics of multi-armed, rotating spirals in Rayleigh-Benard convection for a fluid with Prandtl number near one. In addition to the large-scale rotation of the spirals, we found a cyclic core motion within a central area of radius r = appr. (n lambda/2), where n is the number of spiral arms ending in the core and lambda is the wavelength of the pattern. The dynamics of the core was much faster than the large-scale spiral rotation. We observed multi-armed spirals for which the two periods were commensurate and others for which they were incommensurate.

Leading Order Temporal Asymptotics of the Modified Non-Linear Schrodinger Equation: Solitonless Sector

Using the matrix Riemann-Hilbert factorisation approach for non-linear evolution equations (NLEEs) integrable in the sense of the inverse scattering method, we obtain, in the solitonless sector, the leading-order asymptotics as $t$ tends to plus and minus infinity of the solution to the Cauchy initial-value problem for the modified non-linear Schrodinger equation: also obtained are analogous results for two gauge-equivalent NLEEs; in particular, the derivative non-linear Schrodinger equation.

On the degenerated soft-mode instability

We consider instabilities of a single mode with finite wavenumber in inversion symmetric spatially one dimensional systems, where the character of the bifurcation changes from sub- to supercritical behaviour. Starting from a general equation of motion the full amplitude equation is derived systematically and formulas for the dependence of the coefficients on the system parameters are obtained. We emphasise the importance of nonlinear derivative terms in the amplitude equation for the behaviour in the vicinity of the bifurcation point. Especially the numerical values of the corresponding coefficients determine the region of coexistence between the stable trivial solution and stable spatially periodic patterns. Our approach clearly shows that similar considerations fail for the case of oscillatory instabilities.

The Complex Toda Chains and the Simple Lie Algebras - Solutions and Large Time Asymptotics

The asymptotic regimes of the N-site complex Toda chain (CTC) with fixed ends related to the classical series of simple Lie algebras are classified. It is shown that the CTC models have much richer variety of asymptotic regimes than the real Toda chain (RTC). Besides asymptotically free propagation (the only possible regime for the RTC), CTC allow bound state regimes, various intermediate regimes when one (or several) group(s) of particles form bound state(s), singular and degenerate solutions. These results can be used e.g., in describing the soliton interactions of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation. Explicit expressions for the solutions in terms of minimal sets of scattering data are proposed for all classical series B_r - D_r.

On the semiclassical treatment of anharmonic quantum oscillators via coherent states - The Toda chain revisited

We use coherent states as a time-dependent variational ansatz for a semiclassical treatment of the dynamics of anharmonic quantum oscillators. In this approach the square variance of the Hamiltonian within coherent states is of particular interest. This quantity turns out to have natural interpretation with respect to time-dependent solutions of the semiclassical equations of motion. Moreover, our approach allows for an estimate of the decoherence time of a classical object due to quantum fluctuations. We illustrate our findings at the example of the Toda chain.

Fronts and interfaces in bistable extended mappings

We study the interfaces' time evolution in one-dimensional bistable extended dynamical systems with discrete time. The dynamics is governed by the competition between a local piece-wise affine bistable mapping and any couplings given by the convolution with a function of bounded variation. We prove the existence of travelling wave interfaces, namely fronts, and the uniqueness of the corresponding selected velocity and shape. This selected velocity is shown to be the propagating velocity for any interface, to depend continuously on the couplings and to increase with the symmetry parameter of the local nonlinearity. We apply the results to several examples including discrete and continuous couplings, and the planar fronts' dynamics in multi-dimensional Coupled Map Lattices. We eventually emphasize on the extension to other kinds of fronts and to a more general class of bistable extended mappings for which the couplings are allowed to be nonlinear and the local map to be smooth.

Dynamics of kinks in the Ginzburg-Landau equation: Approach to a metastable shape and collapse of embedded pairs of kinks

We consider initial data for the real Ginzburg-Landau equation having two widely separated zeros. We require these initial conditions to be locally close to a stationary solution (the ``kink'' solution) except for a perturbation supported in a small interval between the two kinks. We show that such a perturbation vanishes on a time scale much shorter than the time scale for the motion of the kinks. The consequences of this bound, in the context of earlier studies of the dynamics of kinks in the Ginzburg-Landau equation, [ER], are as follows: we consider initial conditions $v_0$ whose restriction to a bounded interval $I$ have several zeros, not too regularly spaced, and other zeros of $v_0$ are very far from $I$. We show that all these zeros eventually disappear by colliding with each other. This relaxation process is very slow: it takes a time of order exponential of the length of $I$.

Excitation Thresholds for Nonlinear Localized Modes on Lattices

Breathers are spatially localized and time periodic solutions of extended Hamiltonian dynamical systems. In this paper we study excitation thresholds for (nonlinearly dynamically stable) ground state breather or standing wave solutions for networks of coupled nonlinear oscillators and wave equations of nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) type. Excitation thresholds are rigorously characterized by variational methods. The excitation threshold is related to the optimal (best) constant in a class of discr ete interpolation inequalities related to the Hamiltonian energy. We establish a precise connection among $d$, the dimensionality of the lattice, $2σ+1$, the degree of the nonlinearity and the existence of an excitation threshold for discrete nonlinear Schrödinger systems (DNLS). We prove that if $σ\ge 2/d$, then ground state standing waves exist if and only if the total power is larger than some strictly positive threshold, $ν_{thresh}(σ, d)$. This proves a conjecture of Flach, Kaldko& MacKay in the context of DNLS. We also discuss upper and lower bounds for excitation thresholds for ground states of coupled systems of NLS equations, which arise in the modeling of pulse propagation in coupled arrays of optical fibers.

Disclination vortices in elastic media

The vortex-like solutions are studied in the framework of the gauge model of disclinations in elastic continuum. A complete set of model equations with disclination driven dislocations taken into account is considered. Within the linear approximation an exact solution for a low-angle wedge disclination is found to be independent from the coupling constants of the theory. As a result, no additional dimensional characteristics (like the core radius of the defect) are involved. The situation changes drastically for 2πvortices where two characteristic lengths, l_ϕand l_W, become of importance. The asymptotical behaviour of the solutions for both singular and nonsingular 2πvortices is studied. Forces between pairs of vortices are calculated.

Kink dynamics in a novel discrete sine-Gordon system

A spatially-discrete sine-Gordon system with some novel features is described. There is a topological or Bogomol'nyi lower bound on the energy of a kink, and an explicit static kink which saturates this bound. There is no Peierls potential barrier, and consequently the motion of a kink is simpler, especially at low speeds. At higher speeds, it radiates and slows down.

$D_4\dot{+} T^2$ Mode Interactions and Hidden Rotational Symmetry

Bifurcation problems in which periodic boundary conditions or Neumann boundary conditions are imposed often involve partial differential equations that have Euclidean symmetry. As a result the normal form equations for the bifurcation may be constrained by the ``hidden'' Euclidean symmetry of the equations, even though this symmetry is broken by the boundary conditions. The effects of such hidden rotation symmetry on $D_4\dot{+} T^2$ mode interactions are studied by analyzing when a $D_4\dot{+} T^2$ symmetric normal form $\tilde{F}$ can be extended to a vector field ${\rm \cal F}$ with Euclidean symmetry. The fundamental case of binary mode interactions between two irreducible representations of $D_4\dot{+} T^2$ is treated in detail. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given that permit $\tilde{F}$ to be extended when the Euclidean group ${\rm \cal E}(2)$ acts irreducibly. When the Euclidean action is reducible, the rotations do not impose any constraints on the normal form of the binary mode interaction. In applications, this dependence on the representation of ${\rm \cal E}(2)$ implies that the effects of hidden rotations are not present if the critical eigenvalues are imaginary. Generalization of these results to more complicated mode interactions is discussed.

On a Shallow Water Wave Equation

In this paper we study a shallow water equation derivable using the Boussinesq approximation, which includes as two special cases, one equation discussed by Ablowitz et. al. [Stud. Appl. Math., 53 (1974) 249--315] and one by Hirota and Satsuma [J. Phys. Soc. Japan}, 40 (1976) 611--612]. A catalogue of classical and nonclassical symmetry reductions, and a Painleve analysis, are given. Of particular interest are families of solutions found containing a rich variety of qualitative behaviours. Indeed we exhibit and plot a wide variety of solutions all of which look like a two-soliton for t>0 but differ radically for t<0. These families arise as nonclassical symmetry reduction solutions and solutions found using the singular manifold method. This example shows that nonclassical symmetries and the singular manifold method do not, in general, yield the same solution set. We also obtain symmetry reductions of the shallow water equation solvable in terms of solutions of the first, third and fifth Painleve equations. We give evidence that the variety of solutions found which exhibit ``nonlinear superposition'' is not an artefact of the equation being linearisable since the equation is solvable by inverse scattering. These solutions have important implications with regard to the numerical analysis for the shallow water equation we study, which would not be able to distinguish the solutions in an initial value problem since an exponentially small change in the initial conditions can result in completely different qualitative behaviours.

On the Properties of Two Pulses Propagating Simultaneously in Different Dispersion Regimes in a Nonlinear Planar Waveguide

Properties of two pulses propagating simultaneously in different dispersion regimes, anomalous and normal, in a Kerr-type planar waveguide are studied in the framework of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation. Catastrophic self-focusing and spatio-temporal splitting of the pulses is investigated. For the limiting case when the dispersive term of the pulse propagating in the normal dispersion regime can be neglected an indication of a possibility of a stable self-trapped propagation of both pulses is obtained.

A Transverse Oscillation Arising From Spatial Soliton Formation in Nonlinear Optical Cavities

A new type of transverse instability in dispersively nonlinear optical cavities, called the optical whistle, is discussed. This instability occurs in the mean-field, soliton forming limit when the cavity is driven with a finite-width Gaussian beam, and gives rise to oscillation, period doubling, and chaos. It is also seen that bistability is strongly affected due to the oscillation within the upper transmission branch. The phenomenon is interpreted as a mode-mismatch in the soliton formation process and is believed to have broad applicability.

Spatio-temporal dynamics and plastic flow of vortices in superconductors with periodic arrays of pinning sites

We present simulations of flux-gradient-driven superconducting rigid vortices interacting with square and triangular arrays of columnar pinning sites in an increasing external magnetic field. These simulations allow us to quantitatively relate spatio-temporal microscopic information of the vortex lattice with typically measured macroscopic quantities, such as the magnetization $M(H)$. The flux lattice does not become completely commensurate with the pinning sites throughout the sample at the magnetization matching peaks, but forms a commensurate lattice in a region close to the edge of the sample. Matching fields related to unstable vortex configurations do not produce peaks in $M(H)$. We observe a variety of evolving complex flux profiles, including flat terraces or plateaus separated by winding current-carrying strings and, near the peaks in $M(H)$, plateaus only in certain regions, which move through the sample as the field increases.

Solitonic-exchange mechanism of surface~diffusion

We study surface diffusion in the framework of a generalized Frenkel-Kontorova model with a nonconvex transverse degree of freedom. The model describes a lattice of atoms with a given concentration interacting by Morse-type forces, the lattice being subjected to a two-dimensional substrate potential which is periodic in one direction and nonconvex (Morse) in the transverse direction. The results are used to describe the complicated exchange-mediated diffusion mechanism recently observed in MD simulations [J.E. Black and Zeng-Ju Tian, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 71}, 2445-2448(1993)].
