Discrete soliton equations and convergence acceleration algorithms

Some of the well-known convergence acceleration algorithms, when viewed as two-variable difference equations, are equivalent to discrete soliton equations. It is shown that the $η-$algorithm is nothing but the discrete KdV equation. In addition, one generalized version of the $ρ-$algorithm is considered to be integrable discretization of the cylindrical KdV equation.

The Bi-Hamiltonian Structure of the Perturbation Equations of KdV Hierarchy

The bi-Hamiltonian structure is established for the perturbation equations of KdV hierarchy and thus the perturbation equations themselves provide also examples among typical soliton equations. Besides, a more general bi-Hamiltonian integrable hierarchy is proposed and a remark is given for a generalization of the resulting perturbation equations to $1+2$ dimensions.

From Discrete to Continuous Painlevé Equations: A Bilinear Approach

We present the bilinear forms of the (continuous) Painlevé equations obtained from the continuous limit of the analogous expresssions for the discrete ones. The advantage of this method is that it leads to very symmetrical results. A new and interesting result is the bilinearization of the P$_{\rm VI}$ equation, something that was missing till now.

Bilinear structure and Schlesinger transforms of the $q$-P$_{\rm III}$ and $q$-P$_{\rm VI}$ equations

We show that the recently derived ($q$-) discrete form of the Painlevé VI equation can be related to the discrete P$_{\rm III}$, in particular if one uses the full freedom in the implementation of the singularity confinement criterion. This observation is used here in order to derive the bilinear forms and the Schlesinger transformations of both $q$-P$_{\rm III}$ and $q$-P$_{\rm VI}$.

A discrete time peakons lattice

A discretization of the peakons lattice is introduced, belonging to the same hierarchy as the continuous--time system. The construction examplifies the general scheme for integrable discretization of systems on Lie algebras with $r$--matrix Poisson brackets. An initial value problem for the difference equations is solved in terms of a factorization problem in a group. Interpolating Hamiltonian flow is found. A variational (Lagrangian) formulation is also given.

Integrable mappings and polynomial growth

We describe birational representations of discrete groups generated by involutions, having their origin in the theory of exactly solvable vertex-models in lattice statistical mechanics. These involutions correspond respectively to two kinds of transformations on $q \times q$ matrices: the inversion of the $q \times q$ matrix and an (involutive) permutation of the entries of the matrix. We concentrate on the case where these permutations are elementary transpositions of two entries. In this case the birational transformations fall into six different classes. For each class we analyze the factorization properties of the iteration of these transformations. These factorization properties enable to define some canonical homogeneous polynomials associated with these factorization properties. Some mappings yield a polynomial growth of the complexity of the iterations. For three classes the successive iterates, for $q=4$, actually lie on elliptic curves. This analysis also provides examples of integrable mappings in arbitrary dimension, even infinite. Moreover, for two classes, the homogeneous polynomials are shown to satisfy non trivial non-linear recurrences. The relations between factorizations of the iterations, the existence of recurrences on one or several variables, as well as the integrability of the mappings are analyzed.

The Gambier Mapping

We propose a discrete form for an equation due to Gambier and which belongs to the class of the fifty second order equations that possess the Painleve property. In the continuous case, the solutions of the Gambier equation is obtained through a system of Riccati equations. The same holds true in the discrete case also. We use the singularity confinement criterion in order to study the integrability of this new mapping.

Peakons, R-Matrix and Toda-Lattice

The integrability of a family of hamiltonian systems, describing in a particular case the motionof N ``peakons" (special solutions of the so-called Camassa-Holm equation) is established in the framework of the $r$-matrix approach, starting from its Lax representation. In the general case, the $r$-matrix is a dynamical one and has an interesting though complicated structure. However, for a particular choice of the relevant parameters in the hamiltonian (the one corresponding to the pure ``peakons" case), the $r$-matrix becomes essentially constant, and reduces to the one pertaining to the finite (non-periodic) Toda lattice. Intriguing consequences of such property are discussed and an integrable time discretisation is derived.

Discrete Painleve equations: coalescences, limits and degeneracies

Starting from the standard form of the five discrete Painlevé equations we show how one can obtain (through appropriate limits) a host of new equations which are also the discrete analogues of the continuous Painlevé equations. A particularly interesting technique is the one based on the assumption that some simplification takes place in the autonomous form of the mapping following which the deautonomization leads to a new $n$-dependence and introduces more new discrete Painlevé equations.

Yang--Baxter symmetry in integrable models: new light from the Bethe Ansatz solution

We show how any integrable 2D QFT enjoys the existence of infinitely many non--abelian {\it conserved} charges satisfying a Yang--Baxter symmetry algebra. These charges are generated by quantum monodromy operators and provide a representation of $q-$deformed affine Lie algebras. We review and generalize the work of de Vega, Eichenherr and Maillet on the bootstrap construction of the quantum monodromy operators to the sine--Gordon (or massive Thirring) model, where such operators do not possess a classical analogue. Within the light--cone approach to the mT model, we explicitly compute the eigenvalues of the six--vertex alternating transfer matrix $τ(ł)$ on a generic physical state, through algebraic Bethe ansatz. In the thermodynamic limit $τ(ł)$ turns out to be a two--valued periodic function. One determination generates the local abelian charges, including energy and momentum, while the other yields the abelian subalgebra of the (non--local) YB algebra. In particular, the bootstrap results coincide with the ratio between the two determinations of the lattice transfer matrix.

Unified Approach to Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz and Finite Size Corrections for Lattice Models and Field Theories

We present a unified approach to the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) for magnetic chains and field theories that includes the finite size (and zero temperature) calculations for lattice BA models. In all cases, the free energy follows by quadratures from the solution of a {\bf single} non-linear integral equation (NLIE). [A system of NLIE appears for nested BA]. We derive the NLIE for: a) the six-vertex model with twisted boundary conditions; b) the XXZ chain in an external magnetic field $h_z$ and c) the sine-Gordon-massive Thirring model (sG-mT) in a periodic box of size $\b \equiv 1/T $ using the light-cone approach. This NLIE is solved by iteration in one regime (high $T$ in the XXZ chain and low $T$ in the sG-mT model). In the opposite (conformal) regime, the leading behaviors are obtained in closed form. Higher corrections can be derived from the Riemann-Hilbert form of the NLIE that we present.

Free Field Representation of Quantum Affine Algebra $U_q\widehat{sl_2}$ and Form Factors in Higher Spin XXZ Model

We consider the spin $k/2$ XXZ model in the antiferomagnetic regime using the free field realization of the quantum affine algebra $\uqa$ of level $k$. We give a free field realization of the type II $q$-vertex operator, which describes creation and annihilation of physical particles in the model. By taking a trace of the type I and the type II $q$-vertex operators over the irreducible highest weight representation of $\uqa$, we also derive an integral formula for form factors in this model. Investigating the structure of poles, we obtain a residue formula for form factors, which is a lattice analog of the higher spin extension of the Smirnov's formula in the massive integrable quantum field theory. This result as well as the quantum deformation of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation for form factors shows a deep connection in the mathematical structure of the integrable lattice models and the massive integrable quantum field theory.

Integro-Difference Equation for a correlation function of the spin-${1\over2}$ Heisenberg XXZ chain

We consider the Ferromagnetic-String-Formation-Probability correlation function (FSFP) for the spin-$1\over 2$ Heisenberg XXZ chain. We construct a completely integrable system of integro-difference equations (IDE), which has the FSFP as a $τ$-function. We derive the associated Riemann-Hilbert problem and obtain the large distance asymptotics of the FSFP correlator in some limiting cases.

Classical Matrix sine-Gordon Theory

The matrix sine-Gordon theory, a matrix generalization of the well-known sine-Gordon theory, is studied. In particular, the $A_{3}$-generalization where fields take value in $SU(2)$ describes integrable deformations of conformal field theory corresponding to the coset $SU(2) \times SU(2) /SU(2)$. Various classical aspects of the matrix sine-Gordon theory are addressed. We find exact solutions, solitons and breathers which generalize those of the sine-Gordon theory with internal degrees of freedom, by applying the Zakharov-Shabat dressing method and explain their physical properties. Infinite current conservation laws and the Bäcklund transformation of the theory are obtained from the zero curvature formalism of the equation of motion. From the Bäcklund transformation, we also derive exact solutions as well as a nonlinear superposition principle by making use of the Bianchi's permutability theorem.

Integrable Theory of the Perturbation Equations

An integrable theory is developed for the perturbation equations engendered from small disturbances of solutions. It includes various integrable properties of the perturbation equations: hereditary recursion operators, master symmetries, linear representations (Lax and zero curvature representations) and Hamiltonian structures etc. and provides us a method to generate hereditary operators, Hamiltonian operators and symplectic operators starting from the known ones. The resulting perturbation equations give rise to a sort of integrable coupling of soliton equations. Two examples (MKdV hierarchy and KP equation) are carefully carried out.

Algorithmic Integrability Tests for Nonlinear Differential and Lattice Equations

Three symbolic algorithms for testing the integrability of polynomial systems of partial differential and differential-difference equations are presented. The first algorithm is the well-known Painlevé test, which is applicable to polynomial systems of ordinary and partial differential equations. The second and third algorithms allow one to explicitly compute polynomial conserved densities and higher-order symmetries of nonlinear evolution and lattice equations. The first algorithm is implemented in the symbolic syntax of both Macsyma and Mathematica. The second and third algorithms are available in Mathematica. The codes can be used for computer-aided integrability testing of nonlinear differential and lattice equations as they occur in various branches of the sciences and engineering. Applied to systems with parameters, the codes can determine the conditions on the parameters so that the systems pass the Painlevé test, or admit a sequence of conserved densities or higher-order symmetries.

Algebraic construction of quantum integrable models including inhomogeneous models

Exploiting the quantum integrability condition we construct an ancestor model associated with a new underlying quadratic algebra. This ancestor model represents an exactly integrable quantum lattice inhomogeneous anisotropic model and at its various realizations and limits can generate a wide range of integrable models. They cover quantum lattice as well as field models associated with the quantum $R$-matrix of trigonometric type or at the undeformed $q \to 1$ limit similar models belonging to the rational class. The classical limit likewise yields the corresponding classical discrete and field models. Thus along with the generation of known integrable models in a unifying way a new class of inhomogeneous models including variable mass sine-Gordon model, inhomogeneous Toda chain, impure spin chains etc. are constructed.
