The Bianchi Ix (MIXMASTER) Cosmological Model is Not Integrable

The perturbation of an exact solution exhibits a movable transcendental essential singularity, thus proving the nonintegrability. Then, all possible exact particular solutions which may be written in closed form are isolated with the perturbative Painlevé test; this proves the inexistence of any vacuum solution other than the three known ones.

Bifurcations of two coupled classical spin oscillators

Two classical, damped and driven spin oscillators with an isotropic exchange interaction are considered. They represent a nontrivial physical system whose equations of motion are shown to allow for an analytic treatment of local codimension 1 and 2 bifurcations. In addition, numerical results are presented which exhibit a Feigenbaum route to chaos.

THE PHASE DIAGRAM FOR THE SINE-GORDON MODEL WITH TWO UMKLAPP TERMS

We study the Landau free energy for a uniaxial ordering, taking into account two Umklapp terms of comparable strengths (those of the third and fourth order). Exploring the analogy with the well-known nonintegrable classical mechanical problem of two mixed nonlinear resonances, we complete the previous studies of the corresponding phase portrait by calculating numerically periodic solutions, including those far from the separatrices. It is shown that in the physical range of parameters only periodic configurations are absolutely stable. We determine for the first time the complete thermodynamic phase diagram and show that, in contrast to some earlier claims, the wave number of the ordering does not pass through the devil's staircase, but through a finite number of steps which decreases as the amplitudes of the Umklapp terms increase.

Constants of motion in the dynamics of a 2N-junction SQUID

We show that a 2N junction SQUID (Superconducting QUantum Interference Device) made of 2N overdamped, shunted, identical junctions may be described as a system having only 6 degrees of freedom for any N > 2. This is achieved by means of the reduction introduced by Watanabe and Strogatz (Physica D, Vol. 74, (1994) p. 197) for series biased arrays. In our case 6 rather than 3 degrees of freedom are necessary to describe the system, due to the requirement of phase quantization along the superconducting loop constituting the device. Generalization to multijunction parallel arrays is straightforward.

An Example of the Decoherence Approach to Quantum Dissipative Chaos

Quantum chaos---the study of quantized nonintegrable Hamiltonian systems---is an extremely well-developed and sophisticated field. By contrast, very little work has been done in looking at quantum versions of systems which classically exhibit {\it dissipative} chaos. Using the decoherence formalism of Gell-Mann and Hartle, I find a quantum mechanical analog of one such system, the forced damped Duffing oscillator. I demonstrate the classical limit of the system, and discuss its decoherent histories. I show that using decoherent histories, one can define not only the quantum map of an entire density operator, but can find an analog to the Poincaré map of the individual trajectory. Finally, I argue the usefulness of this model as an example of quantum dissipative chaos, as well as of a practical application of the decoherence formalism to an interesting problem.

Statistics of random quasi 1D Hamiltonian with slowly varying parameters. Painlevé again.

The statistics of random band--matrices with width and strength of the band slowly varying along the diagonal is considered. The Dyson equation for the averaged Green function close to the edge of spectrum is reduced to the Painlevé I equation. The analytical properties of the Green function allow to fix the solution of this equation. The former appears to be the same as that arose within the random--matrix regularization of 2d-gravity.

Classical and Quantum Chaotic Behaviors of Two Colliding Harmonic Oscillators

We have systematically studied both classical and quantum chaotic behaviors of two colliding harmonic oscillators. The classical case falls in Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser class. It is shown that there exists an energy threshold, above which the system becomes nonintegrable. For some values of the initial energy near the threshold, we have found that the ratio of frequencies of the two oscillators affects the Poincaré sections significantly. The largest Lyapunov character exponent depends linearly on the ratio of frequencies of the two oscillators away from the energy threshold in some chaotic regions, which shows that the chaotic behaviors of the system are mainly determined by the ratio. In the quantum case, for certain parameters, the distribution of the energy level spacings also varies with the ratio of frequencies of the two oscillators. The relation between the energy spectra and the ratio of frequencies of the two oscillators, the interaction constant, and the semi-classical quantization constant, is also investigated respectively.

Quantum dephasing by chaos

We examine whether the chaotic behavior of classical systems with a limited number of degrees of freedom can produce quantum dephasing, against the conventional idea that dephasing takes place only in large systems with a huge number of constituents and complicated internal interactions. On the basis of this analysis, we briefly discuss the possibility of defining quantum chaos and of inventing a ``chaos detector".

Stochastic and Boltzmann-like models for behavioral changes, and their relation to game theory

In the last decade, stochastic models have shown to be very useful for quantitative modelling of social processes. Here, a configurational master equation for the description of behavioral changes by pair interactions of individuals is developed. Three kinds of social pair interactions are distinguished: Avoidance processes, compromising processes, and imitative processes. Computational results are presented for a special case of imitative processes: the competition of two equivalent strategies. They show a phase transition that describes the selforganization of a behavioral convention. This phase transition is further analyzed by examining the equations for the most probable behavioral distribution, which are Boltzmann-like equations. Special cases of Boltzmann-like equations do not obey the H-theorem and have oscillatory or even chaotic solutions. A suitable Taylor approximation leads to the socalled game dynamical equations (also known as selection-mutation equations in the theory of evolution).

Probability distributions for multicomponent systems with multiplicative noise

Linear systems with many degrees of freedom containing multiplicative and additive noise are considered. The steady state probability distribution for equations of this kind is examined. With multiplicative white noise it is shown that under some symmetry conditions, the probability distribution of a single component has power law tails, with the exponent independent of the strength of additive noise, but dependent on the strength of the multiplicative noise. The classification of these systems into two regimes appears to be possible in the same manner as with just one degree of freedom. A physical system, that of a turbulent fluid undergoing a chemical reaction is predicted to show a transition from exponential to power law tails, as the reaction rate is increased. A variety of systems are studied numerically. A replication algorithm is used to obtain the Lyapunov exponents for high moments, which would be inaccessible by more conventional approaches.

Analysis and Characterization of Complex Spatio-temporal Patterns in Nonlinear Reaction-Diffusion Systems

Two important classes of spatio-temporal patterns, namely, spatio-temporal chaos and self-replicating patterns, for a representative three variable autocatalytic reaction mechanism coupled with diffusion has been studied. The characterization of these patterns has been carried out in terms of Lyapunov exponents and dimension density. The results show a linear scaling as a function of sub-system size for the Lyapunov dimension and entropy while the Lyapunov dimension density was found to rapidly saturate. The possibility of synchronizing the spatio-temporal dynamics by analyzing the conditional Lyapunov exponents of sub-systems was also observed.

Some exact correlations in the Dyson Brownian motion model for transitions to the CUE

The Dyson Brownian motion model for transistions to the CUE is considered. For initial eigenvalue probability density functions corresponding to the COE and CSE, the density-density correlation function between an eigenvalue at position lambda' initially (tau = 0) and an eigenvalue at position lambda for general tau, is calculated. Theoretical predictions for the asymptotic behaviour are verified, and the distribution for the initial rate of change of the eigenvalues is calculated. Also, for initial conditions corresponding to equi-spaced eigenvalues, the n-point equal parameter distribution is computed. The extension of the calculation of these quantities to a multiparameter version of the theory is given.

Surface Structure and Catalytic $CO$ Oxidation Oscillations

A cellular automaton model is used to describe the dynamics of the catalytic oxidation of $CO$ on a $Pt(100)$ surface. The cellular automaton rules account for the structural phase transformations of the $Pt$ substrate, the reaction kinetics of the adsorbed phase and diffusion of adsorbed species. The model is used to explore the spatial structure that underlies the global oscillations observed in some parameter regimes. The spatiotemporal dynamics varies significantly within the oscillatory regime and depends on the harmonic or relaxational character of the global oscillations. Diffusion of adsorbed $CO$ plays an important role in the synchronization of the patterns on the substrate and this effect is also studied.

Characterization of chaos in random maps

We discuss the characterization of chaotic behaviours in random maps both in terms of the Lyapunov exponent and of the spectral properties of the Perron-Frobenius operator. In particular, we study a logistic map where the control parameter is extracted at random at each time step by considering finite dimensional approximation of the Perron-Frobenius operator

Quantization of Sinai's Billiard - A Scattering Approach

We obtained the spectrum of the Sinai billiard as the zeroes of a secular equation, which is based on the scattering matrix of a related scattering problem. We show that this quantization method provides an efficient numerical scheme, and its implementation for the present case gives a few thousands of levels without encountering any serious difficulty. We use the numerical data to check some approximations which are essential for the derivation of a semiclassical quantization method based also on this scattering approach.

Chaotic Dynamics of SU(2) Gauge Fields in the Presence of Static Charges

We have found in numerical simulations that the chaoticity of the classical hamiltonian lattice SU(2) gauge theory is reduced in the presence of static charges at the same total energy. The transition from strongly to weakly chaotic behavior is rather sudden at a critical charge strength.

Defect-freezing and Defect-unbinding in the Vector Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation

We describe the dynamical behavior found in numerical solutions of the Vector Complex Ginzburg-Landau equation in parameter values where plane waves are stable. Topological defects in the system are responsible for a rich behavior. At low coupling between the vector components, a {\sl frozen} phase is found, whereas a {\sl gas-like} phase appears at higher coupling. The transition is a consequence of a defect unbinding phenomena. Entropy functions display a characteristic behavior around the transition.

Computer algebra derives correct initial conditions for low-dimensional dynamical models

To ease analysis and simulation we make low-dimensional models of complicated dynamical systems. Centre manifold theory provides a systematic basis for the reduction of dimensionality from some detailed dynamical prescription down to a relatively simple model. An initial condition for the detailed dynamics also has to be projected onto the low-dimensional model, but has received scant attention. Herein, based upon the reduction algorithm in~\cite{Roberts96a}, I develop a straightforward algorithm for the computer algebra derivation of this projection. The method is systematic and is based upon the geometric picture underlying centre manifold theory. The method is applied to examples of a pitchfork and a Hopf bifurcation. There is a close relationship between this projection of initial conditions and the correct projection of forcing onto a model. I reaffirm this connection and show how the effects of forcing, both interior and from the boundary, should be properly included in a dynamical model.
