Discussion on the Cosmological Vacuum Energy

The present discussion contribution is some remarks concerning and review of the proposal by one of us (C. Balazs) to explain the cosmological constant by a/the principle of entropy. Used without further comment this principle of entropy could easily lead to untrustable {\em nonlocalities}, but taking into account that the long range correlations are rather to be understood as due to initial condition set up the model for the cosmological constant being small by one of us becomes quite viable.

Zeitreisen: Gravitation trifft Quantenphysik (Time Travel: Gravity Meets Quantum Physics)

An introduction is given to discussions on the possiblity of fabricating spacetime geometries allowing time-travel scenarios with the help of matter possessing typically quantum features. Those scenarios are considered in the framework of quantum field theory and general relativity. Results established in the literature excluding the possibility of time-travel are presented.

An Exact Expression for Photon Polarization in Kerr Geometry

We analyze the transformation of the polarization of a photon propagating along an arbitrary null geodesic in Kerr geometry. The motivation comes from the problem of an observer trying to communicate quantum information to another observer in Kerr spacetime by transmitting polarized photons. It is essential that the observers understand the relationship between their frames of reference and also know how the photon's polarization transforms as it travels through Kerr spacetime. Existing methods to calculate the rotation of the photon polarization (Faraday rotation) depend on choices of coordinate systems, are algebraically complex and yield results only in the weak-field limit. We give a closed-form expression for a parallel propagated frame along an arbitrary null geodesic using Killing-Yano theory, and thereby solve the problem of parallel transport of the polarization vector in an intrinsic, geometrically-motivated fashion. The symmetries of Kerr geometry are utilized to obtain a remarkably compact expression for the geometrically induced phase of the photon's polarization. We show that this phase vanishes on the equatorial plane and the axis of symmetry.

Thermal Hawking Broadening and Statistical Entropy of Black Hole Wave Packet

The quantum mechanical structure of Schwarzschild black hole is probed, in the mini super spacetime, by means of a non-singular minimal uncertainty Hartle-Hawking wave packet. The Compton width of the microstate probability distribution is translated into a thermal Hawking broadening of the mass spectrum. The statistical entropy is analytically calculated using the Fowler prescription. While the exact Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is recovered at the semi classical limit, the accompanying logarithmic tail gives rise to a Planck size minimal entropy black wave packet.

Stringent magnetic field limits from early universe dynamos cosmology with torsion

Earlier Bamba et al [JCAP (2012)] have obtained cosmological magnetic fields in teleparallel torsion theories of gravity that are not compatible with galactic dynamos. This result agrees with previous ones obtained by the author which shows [Phys Lett B (2012)] that anti-dynamo generalised theorem to torsion theories forbides such kind of dynamos to explain galactic magnetic fields of the order of $μ$G. More recently the author has suggested [IJAA (2012)] that a sort of Biermann battery could be obtained in torsioned cosmology. Nevertheless in this paper we show that this can be a particular result, since the second author did not took into account mean field dynamo equations in torsion field background. Actually it is shown that amplification or not of the magnetic field depends upon handness sign of the torsion field vector. It is shown that density fluctuations of spin-torsion density implies also a possibility of amplification of the cosmic magnetic fields. From WMAP data it is possible to estimate the spin-torsion fluctuation as $10^{-6}$ which represents an order of magnitude lower than the matter density. By making use of the gravitational couling of type $RF^{2}$ one obtains $10^{37}G$ for the Planck era magnetic field, which is a much more stringent limit than the ones obtained earlier. The magnetic field obtained today is $10^{-23}G$ is obtained which is able to seed galactic dynamos.

Static cylindrically symmetric dyonic wormholes in the 6-dimensional Kaluza--Klein theory: Exact solutions

We study cylindrically symmetric Abelian wormholes (WhC) in $(4+n)$-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory. It is shown that static, four-dimensional, cylindrically symmetric solutions in $(4+n)$-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory with maximal Abelian isometry group $U(1)^n$ of the internal space with diagonal internal metric can be obtained, as in the case of a supersymmetric static black hole \cite{Cv}, only if the isometry group of the internal space is broken down to the $U (1)_e \times U(1)_m$ gauge group; they correspond to dyonic configurations with one electric $(Q_e)$ and one magnetic $(Q_m)$ charge that are related either to the same $U(1)_e$ or $U(1)_m$ gauge field or to different factors of the $U (1)_e \times U(1)_m$ gauge group of the effective 6-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory. We find new exact solutions of the 6-dimensional Kaluza--Klein theory with two Abelian gauge fields, dilaton and scalar fields, associated with the internal metric. We obtain new types of cylindrically symmetric wormholes supported by the radial and longitudinal electric and magnetic fields.

Klein-Gordon equation for a particles in brane model

Brane model of universe is considered for a free particle. Conservation laws on the brane are obtained using the symmetry properties of the brane. Equation of motion is derived for a particle using variation principle from these conservation laws. This equation has a form of Klein-Gordon equation. Comparison of squared Dirac-Fok-Ivanenko equation for a spin particle with Klein-Gordon equation in curved space has given an expression for chiral spin current variation through the derivative of spin connectivity. This chiral spin current is anomalous spin current corresponding to spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking of massive particle in the space of KG equation solutions.

A first linear cosmological structure formation scenario under extended gravity

The inability of primordial baryonic density fluctuations, as observed in the cosmic microwave background (CMB), to grow into the present day astronomical structures is well established, under Newtonian and Einsteinian gravity. It is hence customary to assume the existence of an underlying dark matter component with density fluctuations, $Δ(M)$, having amplitudes much larger than what CMB observations imply for the baryons. This is in fact one of the recurrent arguments used in support of the dark matter hypothesis. In this letter we prove that the same extended theory of gravity which has been recently shown to accurately reproduce gravitational lensing observations, in absence of any dark matter, and which in the low velocity regime converges to a MONDian force law, implies a sufficiently amplified self-gravity to allow purely baryonic fluctuations with amplitudes in accordance with CMB constraints to naturally grow into the $z=0$ astrophysical structures detected. The linear structure formation scenario which emerges closely resembles the standard concordance cosmology one, as abundantly calibrated over the last decade to match multiple observational constraints at various redshifts. However, in contrast with what occurs in the concordance cosmology, this follows not from a critical dependence on initial conditions and the fine tuning of model parameters, but from the rapid convergence of highly arbitrary initial conditions onto a well defined $Δ(M,z)$ attractor solution.

An Optimal Choice of Reference for the Quasi-Local Gravitational Energy and Angular Momentum

The boundary term of the gravitational Hamiltonian can be used to give the values of the quasi-local quantities as long as one can provide a suitable evolution vector field and an appropriate reference. On the two-surface boundary of a region we have proposed using {\em four dimensional isometric matching} between the dynamic spacetime and the reference geometry along with energy extremization to find both the optimal reference matching and the appropriate quasi-Killing vectors. Here we consider the axisymmetric spacetime case. For the Kerr metric in particular we can explicitly solve the equations to find the best matched reference and quasi-Killing vectors. This leads to the exact expression for the quasi-local boundary term and the values of our optimal quasi-local energy and angular momentum.

Black hole dynamics in generic spacetimes

The dynamics of black hole spacetimes play a crucial role in astrophysics, high energy physics and fundamental physics. In this thesis I have investigated the dynamics of black holes in generic spacetimes by extending established numerical relativity methods to higher dimensional or non-asymptotically flat spacetimes. Additionally, I have explored BH spacetimes perturbed my massive scalar fields. By developing and further improving NR techniques I have been able to push our knowledge to new grounds.

A Reference for the Gravitational Hamiltonian Boundary Term

The Hamiltonian for physical systems and dynamic geometry generates the evolution of a spatial region along a vector field. It includes a boundary term which not only determines the value of the Hamiltonian, but also, via the boundary term in the variation of the Hamiltonian, the boundary conditions. The value of the Hamiltonian comes from its boundary term; it gives the quasi-local quantities: energy-momentum and angular-momentum/center-of-mass. This boundary term depends not only on the dynamical variables but also on their reference values; these reference values determine the ground state---the state having vanishing quasi-local quantities. Here our concern is how to select on the two-boundary the reference values. To determine the "best matched" reference metric and connection values for our preferred boundary term for Einstein's general relativity, we propose on the boundary two-surface (i) \emph{four dimensional} isometric matching, and (ii) extremizing the value of the energy.

Towards a characterization of fields leading to black hole hair

In the present work, it is shown that an asymptotically flat spherical black hole can have a nontrivial signature of any field for an exterior observer if the energy momentum tensor of the corresponding field is either tracefree or if the trace falls off at least as rapidly as inverse cube of the radial distance. In the absence of a general No Hair Theorem, this result can provide a characterization of the fields leading to black hole hair.

Can a wormhole be interpreted as an EPR pair?

Recently, Maldacena and Susskind arXiv:1306.0533 and Jensen and Karch arXiv:1307.1132 argued that a wormhole can be interpreted as an EPR pair. We point out that a convincing justification of such an interpretation would require a quantitative evidence that correlations between two ends of the wormhole are equal to those between the members of the EPR pair. As long as the existing results do not contain such evidence, the interpretation of wormhole as an EPR pair does not seem justified.

On the Existence and Utility of Rigid Quasilocal Frames

The notion of a rigid quasilocal frame (RQF) provides a geometrically natural way to define a system in general relativity, and a new way to analyze the problem of motion. An RQF is defined as a two-parameter family of timelike worldlines comprising the boundary (topologically R x S^2) of the history of a finite spatial volume, with the rigidity conditions that the congruence of worldlines be expansion- and shear-free. In other words, the size and shape of the system do not change. In previous work, such systems in Minkowski space were shown to admit precisely the same six degrees of freedom of rigid body motion that we are familiar with in Newtonian space-time, without any constraints, circumventing a century-old theorem due to Herglotz and Noether. This is a consequence of the fact that a two-sphere of any shape always admits precisely six conformal Killing vector fields, which generate an action of the Lorentz group on the sphere. Here we review the previous work in flat spacetime and extend it in three directions: (1) Using a Fermi normal coordinates approach, we explicitly construct, to the first few orders in powers of areal radius, the general solution to the RQF rigidity equations in a generic curved spacetime, and show that the resulting RQFs possess exactly the same six motional degrees of freedom as in flat spacetime; (2) We discuss how RQFs provide a natural context in which to understand the flow of energy, momentum and angular momentum into and out of a system; in particular, we derive a simple, exact expression for the flux of gravitational energy (a gravitational analogue of the Poynting vector) in terms of operationally-defined geometrical quantities on the boundary; (3) We use this new gravitational (or "geometrical") energy flux to resolve another apparent paradox, this one involving electromagnetism in flat spacetime, which we discovered in the course of this work.

Ponzano-Regge Model on Manifold with Torsion

The connection between angular momentum in quantum mechanics and geometric objects is extended to manifold with torsion. First, we notice the relation between the $6j$ symbol and Regge's discrete version of the action functional of Euclidean three dimensional gravity with torsion, then consider the Ponzano and Regge asymptotic formula for the Wigner $6j$ symbol on this simplicial manifold with torsion. In this approach, a three dimensional manifold $M$ is decomposed into a collection of tetrahedra, and it is assumed that each tetrahedron is filled in with flat space and the torsion of $M$ is concentrated on the edges of the tetrahedron, the length of the edge is chosen to be proportional to the length of the angular momentum vector in semiclassical limit. The Einstein-Hilbert action is then a function of the angular momentum and the Burgers vector of dislocation, and it is given by summing the Regge action over all tetrahedra in $M$. We also discuss the asymptotic approximation of the partition function and their relation to the Feynmann path integral for simplicial manifold with torsion without cosmological constant.

Determining the Hubble constant from gravitational wave observations of merging compact binaries

Recent observations have accumulated compelling evidence that some short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) are associated with the mergers of neutron star (NS) binaries. This would indicate that the SGRB event is associated with a gravitational-wave (GW) signal corresponding to the final inspiral of the compact binary. In addition, the radioactive decay of elements produced in NS binary mergers may result in transients visible in the optical and infrared with peak luminosities on hours-days timescales. Simultaneous observations of the inspiral GWs and signatures in the electromagnetic band may allow us to directly and independently determine both the luminosity distance and redshift to a binary. These standard sirens (the GW analog of standard candles) have the potential to provide an accurate measurement of the low-redshift Hubble flow. In addition, these systems are absolutely calibrated by general relativity, and therefore do not experience the same set of astrophysical systematics found in traditional standard candles, nor do the measurements rely on a distance ladder. We show that 15 observable GW and EM events should allow the Hubble constant to be measured with 5% precision using a network of detectors that includes advanced LIGO and Virgo. Measuring 30 beamed GW-SGRB events could constrain H_0 to better than 1%. When comparing to standard Gaussian likelihood analysis, we find that each event's non-Gaussian posterior in H_0 helps reduce the overall measurement errors in H_0 for an ensemble of NS binary mergers.

The Kähler metric of a blow-up

After a review of the general properties of holomorphic spheres in complex surfaces we describe the local geometry in the vicinity of a CP^1 embedded with a negative normal bundle. As a by-product, we build (asymptotically locally hyperbolic) Kahler-Einstein metrics on the total spaces of the line bundles O(-m), m >= 3 over CP^1. We check that the behavior of the Kahler potential is compatible with the Chern-Weil formulas for the Euler characteristic and signature. We also describe two supersymmetric setups where relevant constructions arise.
