Subvarieties of SU_C(2) and 2θ-divisors in the Jacobian

We explore some of the interplay between Brill-Noether subvarieties of the moduli space SU_C(2,K) of rank 2 bundles with canonical determinant on a smooth projective curve and 2θdivisors, via the inclusion of the moduli space into |2θ|, singular along the Kummer variety. In particular we show that the moduli space contains all the trisecants of the Kummer and deduce that there are quadrisecant lines only if the curve is hyperelliptic; we show that for generic curves of genus <6, though no higher, bundles with >2 sections are cut out by Γ_00; and that for genus 4 this locus is precisely the Donagi-Izadi nodal cubic threefold associated to the curve.

Heights and Geometric Invariant Theory

Let $K$ be a number field, $\OK$ be its ring of integers. We introduce the notion of compactified representation of $GL_N(\OK)$ and, we see how to associate to a hermitian vector bundle $\E$ over $\Spec(\OK)$ and a compactified representation $\T$, a hermitian tensor bundle $\E_T$. We can prove then that there exists a lower bound for the heights of points $x\in¶(\E_T)$ with $SL_N(K)$--semistable generic fibre in terms of the degree of $\E$ and some universal constants depending only on the compactified representation. We give then three applications: a universal lower bound for general flag varieties, an application to the adjoint representation of $SL_N(K)$ and a construction of a height on the moduli space of semistable vector bundles over algebraic curves.

Principal bundles on elliptic fibrations

A central role in recent investigations of the duality of F-theory and heterotic strings is played by the moduli of principal bundles, with various structure groups G, over an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifold on which the heterotic theory is compactified. In this note we propose a simple algebro-geometric technique for studying the moduli spaces of principal G-bundles on an arbitrary variety X which is elliptically fibered over a base S: The moduli space itself is naturally fibered over a weighted projective base parametrizing spectral covers $\tilde{S}$ of S, and the fibers are identified as translates of distinguished Pryms of these covers. In nice situations, the generic Prym fiber is isogenous to the product of a finite group and an abelian subvariety of $Pic(\tilde{S})$.

The Chow Ring of the Moduli Space of Abelian Threefolds

In this paper we determine the structure of the Chow ring of the Delaunay-Voronoi compactification $\tilde{\cal A}_3$ of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian threefolds. This compactification was introduced by Namikawa and studied by Tsushima. We use equivariant classes on level coverings of $\tilde{\cal A}_3$. We also compare this ring with the Chow ring of the moduli space of stable genus 3 curves as determined by Faber.

Numerical Criteria for vey Ampleness of Divisors on Projective Bundles over an elliptic curve

In Butler, J.Differential Geom. 39 (1):1--34,1994, the author gives a sufficient condition for a line bundle associated with a divisor D to be normally generated on $X=P(E)$ where E is a vector bundle over a smooth curve C. A line bundle which is ample and normally generated is automatically very ample. Therefore the condition found in Butler's work, together with Miyaoka's well known ampleness criterion, give a sufficient condition for the very ampleness of D on X. This work is devoted to the study of numerical criteria for very ampleness of divisors D which do not satisfy the above criterion, in the case of C elliptic. Numerical conditions for the very ampleness of D are proved, improving existing results. In some cases a complete numerical characterization is found.

Semisimple Frobenius (super)manifolds and quantum cohomology of $P^r$

We introduce and study a superversion of Dubrovin's notion of semisimple Frobenius manifolds. We establish a correspondence between semisimple Frobenius (super)manifolds and special solutions to the (supersymmetric) Schlesinger equations. Finally, we calculate the Schlesinger initial conditions for solutions describing quantum cohomology of projective spaces.

Braid Group, Algebraic Surfaces and Fundamental Groups of complements of Branch Curves

This paper will appear in the Santa Cruz proceedings. An overview of the braid group techniques in the theory of algebraic surfaces, from Zariski to the latest results, is presented. An outline of the Van Kampen algorithm for computing fundamental groups of complements of curves and the modification of Moishezon-Teicher regarding branch curves of generic projections are given. The paper also contains a description of a quotient of the braid group, namely $\tilde B_n$ which plays an important role in the description of fundamental groups of complements of branch curves. It turns out that all such groups are ``almost solvable'' $\tildeB_n$-groups. Finally, possible applications to the study of moduli spaces of surfaces of general type are described and new examples of positive signature spin surfaces whose fundamental groups can be computed using the above algorithm (Galois cover of Hirzebruch surfaces) are presented.

On $δ_m$ constant locus of versal deformations of nondegenerate hypersurface simple K3 singularities

Hypersurface simple K3 singularities defined by nondegenerate quasi-homogeneous polynomials are classified into ninety five classes in term of the weight of the polynomial by T. Yonemura. We consider versal deformations of them. It has been conjectured that the stratum $μ$ =const of the versal deformation of any nondegenerate hypersurface simple K3 singularity is equivalent to the $δ_m$ constant locus. It holds true for the case deformations are also nondegenerate by K. Watanabe. On the other hand, it follows from Reid that the $δ_m$ constant locus includes the $μ$ constant locus generally. We show the conjecture holds true in general for No.10-14, 46-51 and 83 in the table of Yonemura.

Geometry of Moduli Spaces of Flat Bundles on Punctured Surfaces

We consider the moduli spaces of flat $SL(n, C)$-bundles on Riemann surfaces with one puncture when we fix the conjugacy class ${\cal C}$ of the monodromy transformation around the puncture. We show that under a certain condition on the class ${\cal C}$ (namely the product of $k 1$ and $A_1A_2\cdots A_pA_1^{-1}A_2^{-1}\cdots A_p^{-1}$ belongs to a class which satisfies property P then the $p$ -tuple $(A_1, ..., A_p)$ algebraically generates the whole group $G$.

The degree of the generators of the canonical ring of surfaces with p_g=0

It is shown that the canonical ring of a minimal surface of general type with $p_g=0, K^2\geq 2$ is generated by its elements of degree lesser or equal to 5, provided $|2K|$ has no fixed components, and that this bound can be lowered to 4 under the assumption that $|2K|$ is base-point free.

Numerical Schubert calculus

We develop numerical homotopy algorithms for solving systems of polynomial equations arising from the classical Schubert calculus. These homotopies are optimal in that generically no paths diverge. For problems defined by hypersurface Schubert conditions we give two algorithms based on extrinsic deformations of the Grassmannian: one is derived from a Gröbner basis for the Plücker ideal of the Grassmannian and the other from a SAGBI basis for its projective coordinate ring. The more general case of special Schubert conditions is solved by delicate intrinsic deformations, called Pieri homotopies, which first arose in the study of enumerative geometry over the real numbers. Computational results are presented and applications to control theory are discussed.

Kawachi's invariant for normal surface singularities

We study a useful numerical invariant of normal surface singularities, introduced recently by T. Kawachi. Using this invariant, we give a quick proof of the (well-known) fact that all log-canonical surface singularities are either elliptic Gorenstein or rational (without assuming a priori that they are Q-Gorenstein). The main result is a criterion (stated in terms of Kawachi's invariant) regarding global generation of adjoint linear systems on normal surfaces with boundary. Such results can be used in proving effective estimates for global generation on singular threefolds. The theorem of Ein-Lazarsfeld and Kawamata, which says that the minimal center of log-canonical singularities is always normal, explains why the results proved here are relevant in that situation.

On higher order embeddings of Fano threefolds by the anticanonical linear system

The map given by the anticanonical bundle of a Fano manifold is investigated with respect to a number of natural notions of higher order embeddings of projective manifolds. This is of importance in the understanding of higher order embeddings of the special varieties of adjunction theory, which are usually fibered by special Fano manifolds. An analysis is carried out of the higher order embeddings of the special varieties of adjunction theory that arise in the study of the first and second reductions. Special attention is given to determining the order of the anticanonical embeddings of the three dimensional Fano manifolds which have been classified by Iskovskih, Mori, and Mukai and also of the Fano complete intersections in $\pn N$.

Resonant Hypergeometric Systems and Mirror Symmetry

The Gamma-series of Gel'fand-Kapranov-Zelevinsky are adapted so that they give solutions for certain resonant systems of GKZ hypergeometric differential equations. For this some complex parameters in the Gamma-series are replaced by nilpotent elements from a ring $R_{A,T}$. The adapted Gamma-series is a function $Ψ$ with values in the finite dimensional vector space $R_{A,T}\otimes C$. Applications of these results in the context of toric Mirror Symmetry are described. Building on work of Batyrev we show that the relative cohomology module of a certain hypersurface in a torus is a GKZ hypergeometric $D$-module which over an appropriate domain is isomorphic to the trivial $D$-module $R_{A,T}\otimes O_T$, where $O_T$ is the sheaf of holomorphic functions on this domain. The isomorphism is explicitly given by adapted Gamma-series. As a result one finds the periods of a holomorphic differential form of degree $d$ on a $d$-dimensional Calabi-Yau manifold, needed for the B-model side input to Mirror Symmetry. Relating our work with that of Batyrev and Borisov we interpret the ring $\cR_{\sA,\gT}$ as the cohomology ring of a toric variety and a certain principal ideal in it as a subring of the Chow ring of a Calabi-Yau complete intersection. This interpretation takes place on the A-model side of Mirror Symmetry.

First quantum correction for the moduli space of stable bundles over a Riemann surface

We compute some Gromov-Witten invariants of the moduli space of odd degree rank two stable vector bundles over a Riemann surface of any genus. Next we find the first correction term for the quantum product of this moduli space and hence get the two leading terms of the relations satisfied by the natural generators of its quantum cohomology. Finally, we use this information to get a full description of the quantum cohomology of the moduli space when the genus of the Riemann surface is 3.

Stringy Hodge numbers and Virasoro algebra

Let $X$ be an arbitrary smooth $n$-dimensional projective variety. It was discovered by Libgober and Wood that the product of the Chern classes $c_1(X)c_{n-1}(X)$ depends only on the Hodge numbers of $X$. This result has been used by Eguchi, Jinzenji and Xiong in their approach to the quantum cohomology of $X$ via a representation of the Virasoro algebra with the central charge $c_n(X)$. In this paper we define for singular varieties $X$ a rational number $c_{st}^{1,n-1}(X)$ which is a stringy version of the number $c_1c_{n-1}$ for smooth $n$-folds. We show that the number $c_{st}^{1,n-1}(X)$ can be expressed in the same way using the stringy Hodge numbers of $X$. Our results provides an evidence for the existence of an approach to quantum cohomology of singular varieties $X$ via a representation of the Virasoro algebra whose central charge is the rational number $e_{st}(X)$ which equals the stringy Euler number of $X$.

A geometric approach to the fundamental lemma for unitary groups

We consider from a geometric point of view the conjectural fundamental lemma of Langlands and Shelstad for unitary groups over a local field of positive characteristic. We introduce projective algebraic varieties over the finite residue field $k$ and interpret the conjecture in this case as a remarkable identity between the number of $k$-rational points of them. We prove the corresponding identity for the numbers of $k_f$-rational points, for any extension of even degree $f$ of $k$. The proof uses the local intersection theory on a regular surface and Deligne's theory of intersection multiplicities with weights. We also discuss a possible descent argument that uses $\ell$-adic cohomology to treat extensions of odd degree as well.
