Magnetic excitations in stripe-ordered La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ studied using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

The charge and spin correlations in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ (LBCO 1/8) are studied using Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The static charge order (CO) is observed at a wavevector of $(0.24,0)$ and its charge nature confirmed by measuring the dependence of this peak on the incident x-ray polarization. The paramagnon excitation in LBCO 1/8 is then measured as it disperses through the CO wavevector. Within the experimental uncertainty no changes are observed in the paramagnon due to the static CO, and the paramagnon seems to be similar to that measured in other cuprates, which have no static CO. Given that the stripe correlation modulates both the charge and spin degrees of freedom, it is likely that subtle changes do occur in the paramagnon due to CO. Consequently, we propose that future RIXS measurements, realized with higher energy resolution and sensitivity, should be performed to test for these effects.

Majorana fermions in chains of magnetic atoms on a superconductor

We propose an easy-to-build easy-to-detect scheme for realizing Majorana fermions at the ends of a chain of magnetic atoms on the surface of a superconductor. Model calculations show that such chains can be easily tuned between trivial and topological ground state. In the latter, spatial resolved spectroscopy can be used to probe the Majorana fermion end states. Decoupled Majorana bound states can form even in short magnetic chains consisting of only tens of atoms. We propose scanning tunneling microscopy as the ideal technique to fabricate such systems and probe their topological properties.

Pressure phase diagram and quantum criticality of CePt2In7 single crystals

We report the temperature-pressure (T-P) phase diagram of CePt2In7 single crystals, especially the pressure evolution of the antiferromagnetic order and the emergence of superconductivity, which have been studied by electrical resistivity and ac calorimetry under nearly hydrostatic environments. Compared with its polycrystalline counterpart, bulk superconductivity coexists with antiferromagnetism in a much narrower pressure region. The possible existence of textured superconductivity and local quantum criticality also are observed in CePt2In7, exhibiting a remarkable similarity with CeRhIn5.

Effect of magnetic field on competition between superconductivity and charge order below the pseudogap state

We theoretically investigate the T-B phase diagram of cuprates building on the SU(2) pseudogap order recently obtained from the spin-fermion model. At low temperatures, our analysis reveals an almost temperature-independent critical magnetic field B_{QDW} at which d-wave superconductivity switches to the quadrupole density wave (QDW) phase. For temperatures beyond a certain value of the order of the zero-field superconducting transition temperature T_c, the critical field B_{QDW}(T) sharply grows. We compare our results derived within the effective SU(2) non-linear sigma-model with the phase diagram recently obtained by sound velocity measurements by LeBoeuf et al. [Nat. Phys. 9, 79 (2013)].

Vortex states and Majorana fermions in spin-orbit coupled semiconductor-superconductor hybrid structures

We study the energy spectrum of a vortex core in a two-dimensional semiconductor with Rashba spin-orbit interaction and proximity-coupled to a conventional superconductor and a ferromagnetic insulator. We perform self-consistent calculations using the microscopic tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes method on a lattice and confirm the existence of Majorana fermions in the non-trivial topological phase. We also find two different topologically trivial bulk superconducting phases, only differing in the type of vortex core structure they support and separated by a zero-energy excitation. Furthermore, we find an asymmetry in the energy spectrum with respect to both Zeeman splitting and vortex rotation direction and explain its physical origin.

Anomalous angular dependence of the upper critical induction of orthorhombic ferromagnetic superconductors with completely broken p-wave symmetry

We employ the Klemm-Clem transformations to map the equations of motion for the Green functions of a clean superconductor with a general ellipsoidal Fermi surface (FS) characterized by the effective masses $m_1, m_2$, and $m_3$ in the presence of an arbitrarily directed magnetic induction ${\bm B}=B(\sinθ\cosϕ,\sinθ\sinϕ,\cosθ)$ onto those of a spherical FS. We then obtain the transformed gap equation for a transformed pairing interaction $\tilde{V}(\hat{\tilde{\bm k}},\hat{\tilde{\bm k}}')$ appropriate for any orbital order parameter symmetry. We use these results to calculate the upper critical induction $B_{c2}(θ,ϕ)$ for an orthorhombic ferromagnetic superconductor with transition temperatures $T_{\rm Curie}>T_c$. We assume the FS is split by strong spin-orbit coupling, with a single parallel-spin ($\uparrow\uparrow$) pairing interaction of the \textit{p}-wave polar state form locked onto the $\hat{\bm e}_3$ crystal axis normal to the spontaneous magnetization ${\bm M}_0\perp\hat{\bm e}_3$ due to the ferromagnetism. The orbital harmonic oscillator eigenvalues are modified according to $B\rightarrow Bα$, where $α(θ,ϕ)=\sqrt{m_3/m}\sqrt{\cos^2θ+γ^{-2}(ϕ)\sin^2θ}$, $γ^2(ϕ)=m_3/(m_1\cos^2ϕ+m_2\sin^2ϕ)$ and $m=(m_1m_2m_3)^{1/3}$. At fixed $ϕ$, the order parameter anisotropy causes $B_{c2}$ to exhibit a novel $θ$-dependence, which for $γ^2(ϕ)>3$ becomes a double peak at $0^{\circ}<θ^{*}<90^{\circ}$ and at $180^{\circ}-θ^{*}$, providing a sensitive bulk test of the order parameter orbital symmetry in both phases of URhGe and in similar compounds still to be discovered.

Comparison of charge modulations in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$

A charge modulation has recently been reported in (Y,Nd)Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ [Ghiringhelli {\em et al.} Science 337, 821 (2013)]. Here we report Cu $L_3$ edge soft x-ray scattering studies comparing the lattice modulation associated with the charge modulation in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ with that associated with the well known charge and spin stripe order in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$. We find that the correlation length in the CuO$_2$ plane is isotropic in both cases, and is $259 \pm 9$ Åfor La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ and $55 \pm 15$ Åfor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$. Assuming weak inter-planar correlations of the charge ordering in both compounds, we conclude that the order parameters of the lattice modulations in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ are of the same order of magnitude.

Quantum oscillations of the specific heat in d-wave superconductors with loop current order

We report numerical results of quantum oscillations of the specific heat in the vortex state of a $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductor in the presence of loop current order, which gives rise to Fermi pockets coexisting with nodal $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductivity. Within a lattice tight-binding model, we find that in an intermediate temperature range, the oscillations seem to approximately follow Onsager relation with an effective charge comparable to the electric charge. However, the quasiparticle spectrum does not resemble Landau levels. In order to understand the origin of the oscillations, we also perform Franz-Tesanovic transformation in the presence of the loop order and find that in addition to scalar and Berry potentials, one component of the gauge invariant superfluid velocity couples to the low lying Dirac particles as a component of a vector potential. The magnetic field associated with this vector potential vanishes on average but is highly non-uniform in the magnetic unit cell. We also compare the results with the model without the loop order but with Zeeman-like coupling which also induces Fermi pockets in the superconducting state.

Anomalous metallic state and anisotropic multiband superconductivity in Nb3Pd0.7Se7

We report the discovery of superconductivity in Nb$_3$Pd$_{x}$Se$_7$ with a $x$-dependent superconducting transition-temperature as high as $T_c \simeq 2.1 $ K for $x \simeq0.7$ (middle point of the resistive transition). Needle-like single crystals display anisotropic upper-critical fields with an anisotropy $γ= H^{b}_{c2}/H^{a}_{c2}$ as large as 6 between fields applied along their needle axis (or $b-$axis) or along the $a-$axis. As for the Fe based superconductors $γ$ is temperature-dependent suggesting that Nb$_3$Pd$_{0.7}$Se$_7$ is a multi-band superconductor. This is supported by band structure calculations which reveal a Fermi surface composed of quasi-one-dimensional and quasi-two-dimensional sheets of hole character, as well as three-dimensional sheets of both hole- and electron-character. Remarkably, $H^{b}_{c2}$ is observed to saturate at $H^{b}_{c2}(T \rightarrow 0 \text{K}) \simeq 14.1$ T which is $4.26 \times H_p$ where $H_p$ is the Pauli-limiting field in the weak-coupling regime. The synthesis procedure yields additional crystals belonging to the Nb$_2$Pd$_{x}$Se$_5$ phase which also becomes superconducting when the fraction of Pd is varied. For both phases we find that superconductivity condenses out of an anomalous metallic state, i.e. displaying $\partial ρ/ \partial T < 0$ above $T_c$ similarly to what is observed in the pseudogap-phase of the underdoped cuprates. An anomalous metallic state, low-dimensionality, multi-band character, extremely high and anisotropic $H_{c2}$s, are all ingredients for unconventional superconductivity.

Absence of zero-energy surface bound states in CuxBi2Se3 via a study of Andreev reflection spectroscopy

CuxBi2Se3 has been proposed as a potential topological superconductor characterized by an odd-parity full bulk superconducting gap and zero-energy surface Andreev bound states (Majorana fermions). A consequence of such Majorana fermions is a peak in the zero-energy density of states which should lead to a persistent zero-bias-conductance-peak (ZBCP) in Andreev reflection (AR) or tunneling experiments. Here we employ a newly developed nanoscale AR spectroscopy method to study normal metal/superconductor (N-S) devices featuring CuxBi2Se3. The results show that a ZBCP can be tuned in or out from CuxBi2Se3 samples depending on the N-S barrier strength. While the appearance of ZBCP may be traced to different origins, its absence under finite barrier strength represents the absence of zero-energy Majorana fermions. The present observations thus call for a reexamination of the nature of the superconducting state in CuxBi2Se3.

Possible observation of parametrically amplified coherent phasons in K0.3MoO3 using time-resolved extreme-ultraviolet ARPES

We use time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES) in the Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) to measure the time- and momentum-dependent electronic structure of photo-excited K0.3MoO3. Prompt depletion of the Charge Density Wave (CDW) condensate launches coherent oscillations of the amplitude mode, observed as a 1.7-THz-frequency modulation of the bonding band position. In contrast, the anti-bonding band oscillates at about half this frequency. We attribute these oscillations to coherent excitation of phasons via parametric amplification of phase fluctuations.

Nodal gap structure in Fe-based superconductors due to the competition between orbital and spin fluctuations

To understand the origin of the nodal gap structure realized in BaFe$_2$(As,P)$_2$, we study the three-dimensional gap structure based on the three-dimensional ten-orbital Hubbard model with quadrupole interaction. In this model, strong spin and orbital fluctuations develop by using the random-phase-approximation. By solving the Eliashberg gap equation, we obtain the fully-gapped s-wave state with (without) sign reversal between hole-like and electron-like Fermi surfaces due to strong spin (orbital) fluctuations, so called the $s_\pm$-wave ($s_{++}$-wave) state. When both spin and orbital fluctuations strongly develop, which will be realized near the orthorhombic phase, we obtain the nodal s-wave state in the crossover region between $s_{++}$-wave and $s_\pm$-wave states. The obtained nodal s-wave state possesses the loop-shape nodes on electron-like Fermi surfaces, due to the competition between attractive and repulsive interactions in k-space. In contrast, the SC gaps on the hole-like Fermi surfaces are fully-gapped due to orbital fluctuations. The present study explains the main characters of the anisotropic gap structure in BaFe$_2$(As,P)$_2$ observed experimentally.

Higher angular momentum pairing from transverse gauge interactions

In this paper, we study superconductivity of nonrelativistic fermions at finite-density coupled to a transverse $U(1)$ gauge field, with the effective interaction including the Landau-damping. This model, first studied by Holstein, Norton, and Pincus [Phys. Rev B, {\bf 8}, 2649 (1973)] has been known as an example of a non-Fermi liquid, {ı.e.} a metallic state in which the decay rate of a quasiparticle is large compared to the characteristic quasiparticle energy; other examples of the non-Fermi liquid includes the 2d electron gas in a magnetic field at $ν=1/2$ and the normal state of optimally doped cuprate superconductors. Our study thus addresses the question of whether or not non-Fermi liquids, like Fermi liquids, are unstable towards the formation of superconductivity. The results are (i) the non-Fermi liquid is stable against superconductivity below a critical gauge coupling, (ii) above this critical coupling, the ground state is an unconventional superconductor with angular momentum $\ell \ge 2$. Our results are obtained from a solution of the Dyson-Nambu equation. Note that in this problem there is a quantum critical point between a non-Fermi liquid state and the superconducting state, as the critical coupling is nonzero. This is in contrast to a weakly coupled metal, which exhibits superconductivity for infinitesimally weak interaction regardless of its sign.

Possible Nematic Order Driven by Magnetic Fluctuations in Iron Pnictides

In this paper, instabilities of the isotropic metallic phase in iron pnictides are investigated. The relevant quartic fermionic interaction terms in the model are identified using phase space arguments. Using the functional integral formalism, a Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation is used to decouple these quartic terms. This procedure introduces several bosonic fields which describe the low-energy collective modes of the system. By studying the behavior of these collective modes, a possible instability is found in the forward scattering channel of the isotropic phase driven by magnetic fluctuations. Using mean field analysis, we obtain a static and homogeneous ground state. This ground state is metallic, but the electron Fermi pockets are distorted unequally at different pockets in momentum space. This results in a desirable nematic ordering which breaks the lattice C4 symmetry but preserves translational symmetry and may explain several experimental observations.

Majorana fermions in carbon nanotubes

We show that carbon nanotubes (CNT) are good candidates for realizing one-dimensional topological superconductivity with Majorana fermions localized near the end points. The physics behind topological superconductivity in CNT is novel and is mediated by a recently reported curvature-induced spin-orbit coupling which itself has a topological origin. In addition to the spin-orbit coupling, an important new requirement for a robust topological state is broken chirality symmetry about the nanotube axis. We use topological arguments to show that, for recently realized strengths of spin-orbit coupling and broken chirality symmetry, a robust topological gap of around 500 mK is achievable in carbon nanotubes.

Unconventional superconducting phases on a two-dimensional extended Hubbard model

We study the phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice, including on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) interactions, at weak couplings. We show that the charge-density-wave phase that is known to occur at half-filling when 4V > U gives way to a d_{xy} -wave superconducting instability away from half-filling, when the Fermi surface is not perfectly nested, and for sufficiently large repulsive and a range of on-site repulsive interaction. In addition, when nesting is further suppressed and in presence of a nearest-neighbor attraction, a triplet time-reversal breaking (p_x + ip_y)-wave pairing instability emerges, competing with the d_{x2+y2} pairing state that is known to dominate at fillings just slightly away from half. At even smaller fillings, where the Fermi surface no longer presents any nesting, the (p_x +ip_y)-wave superconducting phase dominates in the whole regime of on-site repulsions and nearest-neighbor attractions, while d_{xy}-pairing occurs in the presence of on-site attraction. Our results suggest that zero-energy Majorana fermions can be realized on a square lattice in the presence of a magnetic field. For a system of cold fermionic atoms on a two-dimensional square optical lattice, both an on-site repulsion and a nearest-neighbor attraction would be required, in addition to rotation of the system to create vortices. We discuss possible ways of experimentally engineering the required interaction terms in a cold atom system.

Charge and spin supercurrents in triplet superconductor--ferromagnet--singlet superconductor Josephson junctions

We study the Josephson effect in a triplet superconductor--ferromagnet--singlet superconductor junction. We show that the interaction of tunneling Cooper pairs with the interface magnetization can permit a Josephson current at the lowest order of a tunneling Hamiltonian perturbation theory. Two conditions must be satisfied for this to occur: the magnetization of the ferromagnet has a component parallel to the ${\bf d}$-vector of the triplet superconductor, and the gaps of the superconductors have the same parity with respect to the interface momentum. The resulting charge current displays an unconventional dependence on the orientation of the magnetic moment and the phase difference. This is accompanied by a phase-dependent spin current in the triplet superconductor, while a phase-independent spin current is always present. The tunneling perturbation theory predictions are confirmed using a numerical Green's function method. An analytical treatment of a one-dimensional junction demonstrates that our conclusions are robust far away from the tunneling regime, and reveals signatures of the unconventional Josephson effect in the critical currents.

Non-empirical Study of Superconductivity in Alkali-doped Fullerides Based on Density Functional Theory for Superconductors

We apply the density functional theory for superconductors (SCDFT) based on the local-density approximation (LDA) to alkali-doped fullerides A3C60 with the face-centered cubic structure. We evaluate the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) from first principles considering energy dependence of electron-phonon coupling, the mass renormalization, and the retardation effect. The calculated Tc=7.5, 9.0 and 15.7 K for A=K, Rb, Cs are approximately 60 % smaller than the experimentally observed values. Our results strongly suggest necessity to go beyond the framework of the Migdal-Eliashberg theory based on the LDA.
