Stability conditions on $A_n$-singularities

We study the spaces of locally-finite stability conditions on the derived categories of coherent sheaves on the minimal resolutions of $A_n$-singularities supported at the exceptional sets. Our main theorem is that they are connected and simply-connected. The proof is based on the study of spherical objects in math.AG/0409151 and the homological mirror symmetry for $A_n$-singularities.

Generic vanishing and minimal cohomology classes on abelian varieties

We establish a, and conjecture further, relationship between the existence of subvarieties representing minimal cohomology classes on principally polarized abelian varieties, and the generic vanishing of certain sheaf cohomology. The main ingredient is the Generic Vanishing criterion of math.AG/0608127, based on the Fourier-Mukai transform.

Addendum to "K3-surfaces of genus 8 and varieties of sums of powers of cubic fourfolds"

In this note, which is an addendum to the e-print math.AG/9810121, we prove that the variety VSP(F,10) of presentations of a general cubic form F in 6 variables as a sum of 10 cubes is a smooth symplectic 4-fold, which is deformation equivalent to the Hilbert square of a K3 surface of genus 8 but different from the family of lines on a cubic 4-fold. This provides a new geometric construction of a compact complex symplectic fourfold, different from a Hilbert square of a K3 surface, a generalized Kummer 4-fold, the variety of lines on a cubic 4-fold and the recent examples of O'Grady (see Duke Math. J. 134, no. 1 (2006), 99-137).

Mixed Hodge structures associated to geometric variations

The purpose of this note is prove that the mixed Hodge structure constructed by the author in math.AG/0301140 [The Leray spectral sequence is motivic, Invent. 2005] for geometric variations of Hodge structure coincides with the structure coming from M. Saito's mixed Hodge module theory. This note also contains a small erratum for the earlier paper.

K-theoretic Donaldson invariants via instanton counting

In this paper we study the holomorphic Euler characteristics of determinant line bundles on moduli spaces of rank 2 semistable sheaves on an algebraic surface X, which can be viewed as $K$-theoretic versions of the Donaldson invariants. In particular, if X is a smooth projective toric surface, we determine these invariants and their wallcrossing in terms of the K-theoretic version of the Nekrasov partition function (called 5-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory compactified on a circle in the physics literature). Using the results of math.AG/0606180 we give an explicit generating function for the wallcrossing of these invariants in terms of elliptic functions and modular forms.

Massey products on cycles of projective lines and trigonometric solutions of the Yang-Baxter equations

We show that a nondegenerate unitary solution $r(u,v)$ of the associative Yang-Baxter equation (AYBE) for $\Mat(N,\C)$ (see math.AG/0008156) with the Laurent series at $u=0$ of the form $r(u,v)=\frac{1\ot 1}{u}+r_0(v)+...$ satisfies the quantum Yang-Baxter equation, provided the projection of $r_0(v)$ to traceless matrices has a period. We classify all such solutions of the AYBE extending the work of Schedler math.QA/0212258. We also characterize solutions coming from triple Massey products in the derived category of coherent sheaves on cycles of projective lines.

Some remarks on the derived categories of coherent sheaves on homogeneous spaces

In this paper we prove first a general theorem on semiorthogonal decompositions in derived categories of coherent sheaves for flat families over a smooth base. Based on the results of math.AG/0510670, we then show that the derived categories of coherent sheaves on flag varieties of classical type are generated by complete exceptional collections. Finally, we find complete exceptional collections in the derived categories of some homogeneous spaces of the symplectic groups of small rank.

Local Models in the ramified case. III. Unitary groups

We continue our study of the reduction of PEL Shimura varieties with parahoric level structure at primes p at which the group that defines the Shimura variety ramifies. We describe "good" $p$-adic integral models of these Shimura varieties and study their 'etale local structure. In this paper we mainly concentrate on the case of unitary groups for a ramified quadratic extension. Some of our results are applications of the theory of twisted affine flag varieties in our previous paper math.AG/0607130.

On the algebraic holonomy of stable principal bundles

Apart from math.AG/0608569, it contains the following applications of it. Let M be a simply connected, irreducible smooth complex projective variety of dimension $n$ such that the Picard number of $M$ is one. If the canonical line bundle $K_M$ is ample, then the algebraic holonomy of $TM$ is $\text{GL}(n, {\mathbb C})$. If $K^{-1}_M$ is ample, $\text{rank}(\text{NS}(M)) = 1$, the biholomorphic automorphism group of $M$ is finite, and $M$ admits a Kähler--Einstein metric, then the algebraic holonomy of $TM$ is ${\rm GL}(n, {\mathbb C})$.

From real affine geometry to complex geometry

We construct from a real affine manifold with singularities (a tropical manifold) a degeneration of Calabi-Yau manifolds. This solves a fundamental problem in mirror symmetry. Furthermore, a striking feature of our approach is that it yields an explicit and canonical order-by-order description of the degeneration via families of tropical trees. This gives complete control of the B-model side of mirror symmetry in terms of tropical geometry. For example, we expect our deformation parameter is a canonical coordinate, and expect period calculations to be expressible in terms of tropical curves. We anticipate this will lead to a proof of mirror symmetry via tropical methods. This paper is the key step of the program we initiated in math.AG/0309070.

Massey and Fukaya products on elliptic curves

This note is a continuation of our paper with E. Zaslow "Categorical mirror symmetry: the elliptic curve", math.AG/9801119. We compare some triple Massey products on elliptic curve with the corresponding Fukaya products on the symplectic torus and recover the classical identity due to Kronecker. We also compute some triple Fukaya products such that the corresponding Massey products are not correctly defined.

On the Classification of 3-dimensional SL_2(C)-varieties

In the present work we describe 3-dimensional complex SL_2-varieties where the generic SL_2-orbit is a surface. We apply this result to classify the minimal 3-dimensional projective varieties with Picard-number 1 where a semisimple group acts such that the generic orbits are 2-dimensional. This is an ingredient of the classification [Keb98, math.AG/9805042] of the 3-dimensional relatively minimal quasihomogeneous varieties where the automorphism group is not solvable.

On the fundamental group and triple Massey's product

Let us say that a map of arcwise connected topological spaces (having the homotopy type of CW-complexes) is a pseudo-homeomorphism if it induces an isomorphism of the first integer homology groups and an epimorphism of the second integer homology groups. We prove that any invariant of a topological space w.r.t. pseudo-homeomorphisms is an invariant of the fundamental group of this space. We also describe a necessary condition for the fundamental groups to be distinguished by such invariants. As an example we show that the invariant used in math.AG/9805056 to distinguish the fundamental groups of combinatorially equivalent arrangements is, in fact, a form of triple Massey's product on the first integer homology group.

Exceptional quotient singularities

A singularity is said to be exceptional (in the sense of V. Shokurov), if for any log canonical boundary, there is at most one exceptional divisor of discrepancy -1. In our previous paper (math.AG/9805004) we found two examples of exceptional canonical singularities: these are quotients by Klein's simple group of order 168 or by its central extension of order 504. Now we classify all the three-dimensional exceptional quotient singularities.

The Bogomolov--Pantev resolution, an expository account

This is a paper based on a talk given at the Warwick Symposium on Algebraic Geometry in 1996. The resolution of singularities given by F. Bogomolov and A. Pantev (arXiv:math.AG/9603019) is presented in a self-contained and "elementary" manner. The main result is that given a variety and a proper closed subvariety, there is a projective birational morphism from a smooth variety to the given variety so that the inverse image of the given closed subvariety and the exceptional locus are sub-divisors of a divisor with simple normal crossings.

Symplectic multiple flag varieties of finite type

Problem: Given a reductive algebraic group G, find all k-tuples of parabolic subgroups (P_1,...,P_k) such that the product of flag varieties G/P_1 x ... x G/P_k has finitely many orbits under the diagonal action of G. In this case we call G/P_1 x ... x G/P_k a multiple flag variety of finite type. (If P_1 is a Borel subgroup, the partial product G/P_2 x ... x G/P_k is a spherical variety.) In this paper we solve this problem in the case of the symplectic group G = Sp(2n). We also give a complete enumeration of the orbits, and explicit representatives for them. (It is well known that for k=2 the orbits are essentially Schubert varieties.) Our main tool is the algebraic theory of quiver representations. Rather unexpectedly, it turns out that we can use the same techniques in the present case as we did for G = GL(n) in math.AG/9805067.

Geometry of the moduli of higher spin curves

This article treats various aspects of the geometry of the moduli of r-spin curves and its compactification. Generalized spin curves, or r-spin curves, are a natural generalization of 2-spin curves (algebraic curves with a theta-characteristic), and have been of interest lately because of the similarities between the intersection theory of these moduli spaces and that of the moduli of stable maps. In particular, these spaces are the subject of a remarkable conjecture of E. Witten relating their intersection theory to the Gelfand-Dikii (rth KdV) heirarchy. There is also a W-algebra conjecture for these spaces, analogous to the Virasoro conjecture of quantum cohomology. We construct a smooth compactification of the stack of smooth r-spin curves, describe the geometric meaning of its points, and prove that it is projective. We also prove that when r is odd and g>1, the compactified stack of spin curves and its coarse moduli space are irreducible, and when r is even and g>1, the stack is the disjoint union of two irreducible components. We give similar results for n-pointed spin curves, as required for Witten's conjecture, and also generalize to the n-pointed case the classical fact that when g=1, the moduli of r-spin curves is the disjoint union of d(r) components, where d(r) is the number of positive divisors of r. These irreducibility properties are important in the study of the Picard group of the stack, and also in the study of the cohomological field theory related to Witten's conjecture (see math.AG/9905034).

M. P. Appell's function and vector bundles of rank 2 on elliptic curve

This paper is devoted to the function introduced by M. P. Appell in connection with decomposition of elliptic functions of the third kind into simple elements. We show that this function (which appeared as a Fukaya triple product in math.AG/9803017) is related to global sections of rank-2 vector bundles on elliptic curves. We derive analogues of theta-identities for this function and prove the divisibility property for the action of modular group which should be considered as a replacement for functional equation.
